A Few Background Facts To The Secrets Of Borteen Bay Box Set

I had mixed feelings about seeing all seven of my published novels in a box set on sale for 99p, but somehow it also brought up a few memories about writing these books which I thought I would share.

Book 1 – The Girl on the Beach – My original title for this book was Who is Harry Dixon? I think Harry Dixon is my favourite of my heroes and the art exhibition at the beginning of the book was inspired by a real life one at my son’s school. This is how I imagined Borteen High School to look like :

Book 2 – The Truth Lies Buried – The original title for this one was Rock, Paper, Scissors because of the game the hero and heroine played when they were children. This book has a particular place in my heart as it does contain a few real life situations I have found myself in and some family sayings that my late mother was fond of. The book also included Wilf the dog pictured below.

Book 3 – Christmas at Borteen Bay – By the point of writing this novel, I realised that publishers often change your title no matter how long it has taken to dream up something you feel is appropriate, so for book three I didn’t bother being inventive and would you believe it – they kept my generic title. Lol.

Book 4 – Sunny Days at the Beach – I had a fun research trip for this title on a gin distillery tour at Silent Pool Gin.

Book 5 – Christmas at the Little Beach Café – when I saw the cover design for this book which included the jaunty seagull with a Christmas hat, I knew I needed to put him into my book, so Ryan the seagull was included in the story at the editing stage.

Book 6 – Summer at Lucerne Lodge – Original title Rosie and Tanner. This was actually the first book of the series I ever wrote and includes lots of references to the therapies I used to work with in my day job.

Book 7 – A New Arrival at Borteen Bay – This book features Buzz, a minor character from some of the other books – he runs a crystal shop and draws labyrinth paths on the beach for people to walk around in exchange for a donation to charity.

There is so much of my blood, sweat and tears over many years included in these seven books and I do hope that readers have and will enjoy reading them. All seven are available for a short time at the bargain price of 99p here.

Penny Mirren Talks About Characters

Today I’m pleased to welcome someone new to my blog, as Penny Mirren joins me to talk about characters and her latest novel Gracie Jenkins Runs a Marathon which was released on 11 September 2025. Over to Penny …

Thanks so much for having me on your blog today, Morton. I thought I’d chat a little about why I love to create characters who are pushing the boundaries of what’s expected of them in later years.

In my latest book Gracie Jenkins Runs a Marathon (out with Avon on the 11th of September 2025), Gracie is a seventy-two-year-old retired teacher, living with her husband on the sunny Essex coast. Many will recognise Gracie’s situation: having lived a busy, purposeful and active life, suddenly she feels rather adrift. Her husband Andrew has mobility issues, putting a full stop to their love of hiking, and without the camaraderie of her work colleagues she can’t help feeling isolated and redundant. So, when her niece suggests she accompanies her to their local friendly running club one Saturday, Gracie, although skeptical about her ability to keep up, decides to give it a go. After all, she’s strolled the coastal paths of Frinton-on-Sea, daily, for most of her life, how hard can it be?

Iconic blue pavilion on Frinton-on-Sea’s seafront
Inspiration for the meeting place of the running club

This decision proves to be the catalyst for the gigantic adventure she will later embark upon, but also, crucially, for opening Gracie’s world to a new community of people; people she might never normally have encountered, people she will come to call friends. This is a theme I love to explore in my novels, and was the basis of The Unretirement too, another story about a determined woman achieving amazing things a little later in life.

No spoilers here, about the chain of events that compels Gracie to train for the London Marathon, or whether she achieves her goal, but I think many of us will empathise with some of the barriers she encounters, when making this momentous decision. For starters, she doubts herself. She questions whether she’s being realistic about what she is physically capable of at this age. Also, is it selfish to pursue this challenge which will devour so much of her time and take her away from her husband?

And unsurprisingly, there are mixed reactions from friends and family – expressions of surprise, disbelief, concern and awe. The thing is, as we get older, society expects us to conform to pre-conceived ideas of what life should look like at sixty, seventy, eighty and even ninety. But what if you’ve got other plans? What if retirement suddenly gives you the time and opportunity to throw yourself into something you’ve always dreamed of, or opens doors to new pursuits? What if, instead of being the end of something, it’s actually the beginning?

Gracie’s journey throughout the story is full of ups and downs. Alongside physical training for the hardest thing she’s ever done, she has to dig deep to find a mental strength she never knew she had, all whilst grappling with the new status quo of having her estranged sister Jill back on the scene. The story is told from the dual perspectives of the dynamically different sisters, revealing their motivations and providing much of the story’s humour, because there’s nothing quite like complicated family relationships to bring you back down to earth with a bump just when you think you’re winning. But what Gracie learns along the way is that when you set your mind to something – there really is no limit to what you can achieve. And even more rewarding than that, is the discovery that when a community comes together for a common cause, well, that’s when the magic really begins to happen.

Perhaps all of us need a gentle reminder sometimes that with age comes a lifetime of wisdom and experience, an ability to laugh in the face of adversity and to pick ourselves up and try again. I’d love readers to come away feeling warm, hopeful and inspired – believing in their own resilience and in the power of community, friendship and second chances, regardless of age.

Spectating at the London Marathon 2025 – an incredible, humbling experience.

An Extract From “Magpie” by Georgia Hill

Delighted to welcome Georgia Hill back to my blog to introduce us to one of the new novels she is publishing this year! Magpie is released on 9 September 2025 and Georgia is treating us to an extract …

Thank you to Morton for having me on as guest again. Morton is always incredibly supportive to other writers and I’m proud to have her as a friend.

In a weird twist of fate, I have three new books out this year. My next one, Magpie, out 9th September 2025, is about a terrible injustice, a house which harbours secrets and a heartrending decision which echoes through the centuries. It’s the fourth of my dual narrative historical romances.

Beth Loveday finds herself drawn to a half-timbered building which she buys, intent on building a new business and a new life. It doesn’t go quite to plan!

Here’s an extract. Beth and her sister Lorna have just picked up the keys to Tenpenny House and are exploring, discussing its potential as a shop:

***

“‘And what about that bad boy?’ her sister asked, nodding to the fireplace.

Beth edged closer to the enormous inglenook which dominated the back wall. ‘No idea.’ She sniffed. Burned wood and soot prickled her nostrils. A gout of ash fell making her jump back. ‘Used recently then. Do you think it’ll need sweeping?’

Lorna joined her and slipped an arm through, eyeing the blackened chimney with distrust. ‘Almost certainly.’

‘And do I need rugs to cover these old stone slabs, or will that be a trip hazard? Rush matting would look cool.’ She peered down, ideas beginning to fizz. ‘The flooring could be original, you know. The estate agent reckons the place dates back to at least the seventeenth century, possibly even before. I might research life in seventeenth century Flete when I get the chance.’

‘You and your research. You love your books.’ Lorna laughed. ‘Think you’ll be too busy getting the shop up and running to do any learning.’

A thrill electrified Beth. Excitement finally winning through, bypassing the stress and angst of the lead up to Tenpenny House’s purchase. This was going to be her dream come true. Her very own shop! On the other side of the chip-boarded windows she heard footsteps tripping along the pavement. In a few short weeks those feet could be wandering in. They could be her first customers. She hugged Lorna’s arm and did a little happy dance, stirring up clouds of dust which made them sneeze.

‘Aw, that’s better, Bethie. It’s good to see you getting enthused about it all.’

‘Well, you know me, I warm up to things slowly -’

‘And are always cautious and over think things. Now you’ve finally taken the plunge to do this, you’ve got to go all-out.’

‘Stop nagging.’

‘It’s my job,’ Lorna replied crisply. ‘Come on, let’s have a decko at the rest of the place.’ She disappeared into the hallway.

As Beth dropped the latch on the solid oak door shutting off the selling space, a noise behind made her freeze. ‘What’s that?’

Lorna turned to her. ‘What?’

‘There’s something in the shop.’

‘Don’t be daft. We’ve just come out. Only thing in there is dust and cobwebs. And you locked the front door. No one could walk in.’

Beth shushed her sister. ‘Listen!’ She put her ear to the door.

Lorna joined her. ‘I can’t hear anything.’

There was a frozen silence as the women listened, their ears pressed to the ancient oak. From within the shop came an eerie slithering. Beth felt her pulse leap in her throat. The room had been empty when she’d left, she was sure of it.

The slithering rose and sank. It stopped, began again and grew into thumping, flapping sound. A violent bang against the door had them rearing back in terror.

‘Shit!’ Beth clutched onto Lorna, her insides liquid with fear. The horrible unearthly slithering continued, growing into a frenzy. ‘A ghost?’ Thankfully the words died on her tongue. Her sister would never let her live that one down.

Lorna put her ear against the door again. ‘I think,’ she screwed up her face in concentration, ‘I think it might be a bird.’

‘A bird? But how?’ Beth asked stupidly.

‘Windows boarded up. Door locked. Chimney? Remember the ash that fell down? Must have been a bird trapped.’

Another thump resounded against the door before whatever it was slithered to the ground.

Beth’s heart rate hitched. Trapped birds were horrible to deal with. They’d had a starling fly into the office one summer. Panicked, it made a hell of a mess before she’d released it. ‘Suppose it could be a bird.’ At least the place wasn’t haunted. ‘We’ll have to let the poor thing out.’ Feeling calmer now she knew what she was dealing with, she added, ‘We go in, you close this door as quickly as you can. Last thing we want is for it to escape into the rest of the building. I’ll unlock the front door, and we shoo it out. Ready?’ Lorna nodded.

They burst into the shop. A chaos of whirling blackness flew at Beth’s head. Protecting her eyes and trying not to scream, she ran to the front door and scrabbled at the lock.

‘It’s gone.’ Lorna’s voice went brittle with relief. She’d obviously been putting on a brave front. ‘Well done, Bethie.’ Joining her at the open front door, she asked, ‘Did you see what it was? Blackbird maybe?’

Beth had seen the bird as it soared up over the roof tops. Beneath its blackened feathers gleamed white shot through with iridescent blue, its long tail leaving a trail of choking soot. ‘It was a magpie.’

‘Oh Beth.’ Lorna stared at her with huge eyes. ‘You know what gran always says.’

Beth nodded. ‘One for sorrow.’”

The Mind of a Writer by Morton S. Gray

It’s my birthday week and I find these milestones cause me to reflect and assess where I am at the time. I even found my thoughts straying to preparations for Christmas this week … no!!!!

I’m still working my way through my family history files and writing up the details into hopefully a useful, readable form in which they might be kept by my family. This is a fascinating process and has provided a considerable insight into lives in the past. (Smacks wrist – I do not need to write books about these people! But of course, I am tempted and plot ideas are appearing without effort.)

The branch of the family I am writing up at the moment in the mid 1860s had thirteen children, although so far I can only find twelve and the poor woman lost seven of these children before they reached adulthood. I found myself relieved that she didn’t live long enough to see another son die in WW1 and be buried in France, or another one emigrate to Canada. I don’t know if it is my writing brain, but I find myself getting very emotional at times as I can easily put myself in some of these situations from the past in my mind.

I tell myself that I don’t have time to write fiction seriously at the moment and remind myself I still have to illustrate my mother’s memoirs from our extensive photographic collection, but I can’t help noting down ideas – lots of ideas!

Since I attended my sour dough bread course with my next door neighbour, I have made a sourdough loaf every week and inevitable the time when I am mixing and kneading the dough often leads to new story ideas appearing in my head. I wouldn’t mind but the story appearing this week was not an historical tale connected to my family history, but a futuristic novel, with ideas for this new world coming thick and fast.

It has been such a busy week, with three different sets of visitors staying over, with the accompanying bed making, bathroom cleaning, towel and bedding washing, and that’s apart from doing the delivery and pick up of my grandson from nursery.

So, I think you could say that I am a writer with loads of ideas but at this point in time I am not making the space to take these stories seriously. I know it will happen, but for now I am noting down these ideas and allowing them to compost on the back burner. There is also the matter of deciding if I am a contemporary writer, a contemporary cosy crime writer, a timeslip writer, an historical writer or a futuristic novel writer! Hopefully all will become clear at some point when I finally get time to settle down to write. Any tips on deciding who I am as a writer welcome…

Things We Need To Say by Linda Middleton

It is lovely to welcome Linda Middleton to my blog this week. Linda attended the Summer Fling event in Birmingham I blogged about last week and it was lovely to have a short conversation in the busy schedule for the day. Linda is going to tell readers about her writing journey and about her new novel for Choc Lit Publishing Things We Need To Say. Over to Linda …

Thank you for inviting me onto your blog and letting me tell you about my latest novel, published by Choc Lit (Joffe Books).

Things We Need To Say is my third contemporary romance and is a spin off from my first book, Things They Never Said. It follows Jay (a chef) and Emma (a graduate trainee hotel manager) who met in Book 1. They are both career driven and extremely ambitious. This causes bumps in their relationship which they must learn to negotiate if they are going to reach their happy ever after. We also catch up with main characters from Things They Never Said, Liz and Alex. The book is available on Amazon. The paperback version was released on 20th August and the kindle version will be available from 27th August 2025.

I have been writing for more years than I care to remember. For a long time I received one rejection after the other, and almost gave up hope of having a novel published. I’d had several short stories published in women’s magazines, but the acceptance for a novel was ever elusive. Despite all this though, I never gave up (although there were times when I wavered). Maybe it’s because I’m a Taurean, or maybe because I’m just stubborn, but something inside compelled me to carry on.

Following two significant bereavements at the end of 2017 and then a major health scare myself in 2018, I decided that life was definitely no dress rehearsal and that I should do everything I could to make my dream come true. It took me a while to get back to health though so it wasn’t until 2023 that Choc Lit accepted Things They Never Said.

They offered me a three book deal and I was practically dancing on the ceiling with joy that I had finally ‘made it’.  After that I wrote First Impressions, which was published in August 2024 and now, my book deal is complete with Things We Need To Say. I’ve got several more book ideas in the pipeline and can’t wait to get writing again.

I grew up in the Cheshire countryside but always dreamed of city life, so when I was eighteen I went to university to study hotel management in London. I loved the vibrancy of the city but after nine years Cheshire drew me back. I settled in Chester where I still live with my husband, two grown up sons and my cat. I haven’t yet achieved the dream of writing full time, and work part time as an administrator, but I live in hope of one day being able to just write. When I’m not in Cheshire, you’ll find me at our apartment in Spain, where I can soak up the sun, while scribbling away. I still have ambitions to travel to other places though, and hope soon to visit Italy, the Greek islands and maybe even go on a cruise or two.

I have just got my writing website up and running. It’s very much still a work in progress, but I’m so pleased that I managed to design it myself even though I’m not that technically minded.

About Things We Need To Say

Don’t let The One become The One Who Got Away.

Emma thought she had her life figured out – the career, the love, the future. But her career feels like it’s going nowhere, and her once-perfect relationship with Jay is beginning to unravel. She fears that the life she envisioned is slipping away.

Jay has always dreamed of running his own restaurant. But he never imagined that in chasing success, each step forward would pull him further away from Emma.

As cracks in their relationship deepen, Emma and Jay realise that their love story wasn’t as perfect as they once believed. There are things they’ve never said to each other – things they must confront if they’re to save what they once had.

If they don’t take control of their own happiness, they might lose the one thing they can’t afford to – each other.

Refilling The Creative Well

I don’t think you can underestimate how being with like-minded people can lift your mood and increase your motivation! I spent Saturday in Birmingham at a writer’s event and although it was absolutely exhausting it was also very inspirational.

The RNA (Romantic Novelists’ Association) Summer Fling had a packed programme of speakers and in the breaks there were so many familiar faces to catch up with. Of course, there wasn’t time to talk to everyone and I’ve even discovered that some friends were there who I didn’t even see during the course of the day.

I travelled by train and two writing friends Georgia Hill and Janice Preston joined me from two different stations on route.

The venue was amazing. We were in the ballroom of The Grand Hotel in Birmingham and I’ve seen so many photographs online of the ceiling already as it was truly spectacular.

We were treated to workshops on:-

character mottos, very enlightening and helpfulsaggy middle busting, again so useful for when you are stuck in the doldrums of a story as so often happensa very packed and speedy presentation on marketinghow to build a career as an authopreneur – very thought provokingthe secrets of a best seller – fascinatinghow to rev up the tension in a romancetime management and procrastination tips – always helpful and my fav one was to have special writing trousers lol.

We even managed a group photograph of the Birmingham RNA group – I hope they don’t mind me borrowing the image …

The day definitely made me want to attend more events. I now need to sit down and go through my notes in more detail, but the day seemed to unlock my stuck feelings and I began writing again the next day. Long may that continue and thanks you to the organisers and speakers.

My Favourite Holiday by Marie Laval

It is lovely to welcome Marie Laval back to my blog to talk about her recent holiday. Marie’s fantastic Saintclair Family novels have just been issued as a trilogy boxset by her publisher Choc Lit / Joffe Books and I have given details of this at the end of the post. But first over to Marie to talk about her wonderful sounding holiday and I defy any of you not to want cake after seeing Marie’s photograph …

Thank you very much Morton for welcoming me on your blog once again, this time to talk about my favourite holiday. It’s difficult to pick just one as I’ve been fortunate to enjoy many lovely holidays over the years. When my children were little, we used to go to Lyme Regis and the Lake District – two places that will always have a special place in my heart. More recently, I have ventured abroad on city breaks to Copenhagen, Prague and Stockholm and it’s been magical to discover towns I had only dreamt of before.

My last holiday however has been absolutely wonderful. I’ve just returned from the Bourbonnais region of France where I was visiting my sister. I hadn’t seen her for two years and it was amazing to be together again and share long walks, visits to picturesque chateaux and villages, not to mention encounters with deer, donkeys and buzzards and various other wildlife, and with my sister’s eccentric English neighbour (more about him below). Unfortunately we also had a short but very scary thunderstorm which brought down roofs, trees and telephone lines.

I can hardly fit in my jeans after all the delicious food and drinks I enjoyed – cakes, cheeses and Merguez (a type of spicy sausage) to name but a few, and chilled rosé wine and occasional glass of bubbly. I may have overindulged a bit but it was after all my 60th birthday!

My sister and her friend live in a small house which used to feature a sheep-pen and a very steep ladder to access a dormouse-infested attic. They worked very hard over the years to renovate the house and it’s now much more comfortable and very pretty with its blue shutters and garden filled with flowers. Furry visitors still occasionally scuttle between your feet as you enjoy a cup of coffee on the terrace, but ‘C’est la campagne!’ as my sister says. The house is indeed in the middle of nowhere, with only farms and endless fields of corn or sunflowers and narrow roads lined with blackberry bushes…

And then there’s Robin’s ramshackle house and allotment across the lane.

Robin is an elderly Englishman who lives amongst his goats, rabbits and poultry, i.e. hens, cockerels and partridges. He usually sleeps outside on his balcony or in a hammock in the allotment. I had met him briefly during previous visits, but this was the first time I actually talked to him after he asked to ‘borrow’ my son to build a wooden gate and clear tree branches after the storm. How fascinating and inspiring it was to learn about his life journey… After being a builder, musician and chauffeur to millionaires, he moved to France to be self-sufficient and live in harmony with nature.

Isn’t that what a great holiday is all about? Having a break from the routine, spending time with loved ones, discovering new places and meeting people. My holiday in France certainly was all that, and more, and I can’t wait to go back.

An Extract From The Silent Sister by Jan Baynham

Today I’m joined by lovely Jan Baynham. Jan is sharing with blog readers an extract from her new novel The Silent Sister which is published by Joffe Books/Choc Lit Publishing on 5 August 2025. I have seen how meticulous Jan is about the research for her books and am sure this novel will be very popular. Over to Jan …

Thank you for inviting me onto your lovely blog, Morton. I’d like to share an extract from my new novel, The Silent Sister, which will be published by Joffe Books/Choc Lit Publishing on 5 August 2025. It’s always a nervous as well as an exciting time, but I’m hoping that readers will enjoy the novel as much as I enjoyed writing it.

I first visited the Greek island of Kefalonia in 2019 and once I heard about the devastating 1953 earthquake that decimated the island, I knew I wanted to set my next novel there. Cassia and Eléni’s stories soon became very real to me, and I could understand why Cassia kept her secret for twenty years. I’ve also tried to take the reader on a virtual visit to the beautiful island, seen through Eléni’s eyes as she returns to the place of her birth for the first time.

Extract follows :-

***

Kefalonia, May 1973

It was mid-afternoon when Eléni arrived in Argostoli. The sun was still high in the sky, so the intense heat reflected from the paved streets and pale-rendered buildings. She was glad to walk along the shady side of the road as she searched for the small hotel where she was to stay for her first two weeks. Eléni placed her suitcase down on the pavement to take a rest. Her stomach churned with both excitement and nervousness as it dawned on her what she was doing. She was in a foreign country, her first trip abroad and, more than that, her first trip on her own…

The wide street emerged onto a large square surrounded by restaurants and bars. The smell of coffee wafted in Eléni’s direction as she passed tavérnas bustling with people sitting outside and chatting away. Vibrant clusters of magenta bougainvillea tumbled over wooden pergolas, and large earthenware pots full of white pelargoniums divided each bar area on the pavement.

Her hotel was tucked up a side street. The glass doors were set back from the pavement under an arched overhang that provided shade to the reception area inside. Hotel Athena. The square reception area was flooded with light under its glass-domed ceiling.

Eléni approached the desk where a smartly dressed man attended to some paperwork. He looked up.

‘May I help you?’

Nai. I have a room booked in the name of Eléni Davies.’ She was glad of her command of the Greek language. All thanks to her mother.

After being told of the housekeeping rules and breakfast times, Eléni was handed her door key and given directions to the lift. Her room was on the second floor.

Eléni’s hand shook as she put the key in the lock. The tiny room was dark and cool inside. She opened the blue wooden shutters and the door onto the balcony. For a moment, she stood resting against the metal railings and drank in the view. Over the tops of the terracotta tiled roofs stretching out before her, she had a view of Argostoli harbour in the distance. Even from that far away, Eléni could see the sea was a deep teal colour in the afternoon sun.

She walked back into the room. A hand-embroidered counterpane covered the bed that was pushed up against the wall opposite the double doors to the balcony. Clusters of silver-green olive leaves interspersed with blue-black olives had been meticulously stitched on the white linen coverlet edged with lace.

After unpacking, Eléni left the hotel behind to walk through the square. All the buildings had been rebuilt since 1953. They were modern in design and most were just two storeys high. She’d read how they’d been constructed with certain specifications to strengthen them in the event of further earthquakes. Again, her thoughts went to her mother and what she would think of the new town. Following the street map she’d picked up at the hotel reception, Eléni made her way down to the harbour. At every turn, she looked up at the street signs in the hope of finding the one now imprinted on her brain. Byron Street. None matched the name her mother had written down.

She crossed the road and continued walking along the quayside. Gleaming white vessels of every shape and size were moored along the harbour wall, from luxury yachts to more modest sailing dinghies and painted wooden fishing boats.

The water was so clear she saw shoals of small fish wriggling around the hulls of the boats.

‘Damsel fish,’ said a voice.

About The Silent Sister

The novel, set in 1953 and 1973, in rural mid-Wales and the Greek island of Kefalonia, is a dual timeline dealing with a family secret, trauma, identity and reconciliation. I had a wonderful time researching this story by visiting Kefalonia and walking in my characters’ footsteps.

What it says on the back of the book:-

The Silent Sister: Escape to Greece in this utterly captivating sun-drenched historical saga

Two lost women. One Greek island. A secret that spans generations.

Kefalonia, Greece, 1953. On a sun-drenched island, Cassia defies her powerful father by falling in love with Nikos — a man her family will never accept. But their happiness is short-lived.

A catastrophic earthquake strikes, and the once-idyllic island is reduced to little more than dust and ruin.

Amid the chaos, Cassia loses almost everything. She is left with no choice but to flee the only home she has ever known, carrying a shattering secret she must never reveal.

Wales, 1973. Eleni uncovers a hidden journal among her mother’s belongings. Within its pages lies a woman’s story shaped by tragedy — a story Cassia never shared, and one that might finally explain why Eleni never spoke as a child.

Driven by a need to uncover the truth about her past, Eleni travels to the now-rebuilt island. There she seeks to reveal the secrets hidden among the pastel-hued houses.

In the place where it all began, Eleni must confront the legacy of silence. Here she must make a life-altering decision that will reshape her future and finally heal her family’s past.

This breathtaking and escapist historical tale about resilience, hope and the healing power of love will sweep you away to a sun-kissed Greek island. Perfect for fans of Fiona Valpy, Dinah Jefferies, Santa Montefiore or Karen Swan.

Too Hot and Developing Hooks by Morton S. Gray

It’s been far too hot for me over the last few weeks. I find that my brain doesn’t function properly over about 22 degrees and if you add lack of sleep as well, I am not getting much done at all, which is very frustrating.

I’ve been having some lovely guest authors featuring their books on my blog lately and there are plenty more to come over the next few months. Let me know if you are an author who would like a slot.

My quest to write up our family history is progressing well and I am finding it very satisfying to incorporate acres of notes taken over many years into family specific documents, that might stand a chance of being kept on family members shelves.

I was pleased to find my dormant writing brain was showing some signs of coming back to life this week when I began working on some hooks for my works in progress alongside some other writers doing the same.

Hooks are supposed to be the tantalising statements that make publishers and ultimately readers want to publish and / or read your book.

These short statements of what your book is about look deceptively simple but it is so hard to encapsulate the essence of your book in a short statement that works as a hook. The idea is that if you are in a lift with a publisher and they ask about your writing work in progress you can sell the book with this statement – literally hooking the publisher into your idea.

After several lacklustre attempts, I discovered that a spider diagram highlighting the main points of a novel was helpful in deciding exactly what to include. There is a long way to go to get these slick enough for a publisher to take notice, but it has been fun having a go. I may share a few of these with you at a later date when I am more confident of my efforts. And as I have a new six book series looking for a publishing home, I need to keep refining them.

An Excerpt From The Cruise Club By Caroline James

This week I’m delighted to welcome Caroline James back to my blog to share an extract from her latest novel The Cruise Club. I have read and enjoyed the book so I will share my own review at the bottom of the post. Over to Caroline …

Huge thanks to Morton for inviting me to her lovely blog as my new novel The Cruise Club sets sail. I hope you enjoy the excerpt below.

Wishing you all many happy reading hours, warmest wishes, Caroline xx

In this excerpt from The Cruise Club, Carmen—who lives with her elderly, nagging mother, Betty, makes a life-changing decision to embark on her very first cruise …

“A cruise is more than the start of a journey, it is the beginning of a love affair with the sea, where every port brings a new adventure.”

As Carmen picked up the newspaper, a supplement fell out. Stooping to retrieve it, she saw that it advertised cruise ship holidays. The glossy brochure was colourful, and, sitting down again, she idly flicked through the pages, imagining what it would be like to pack her bag and escape to a far-flung location.

A holiday without Betty, imagine!

There were enticing cruises to the Caribbean, Asia, Antarctica and the South Pacific on giant passenger liners. At the same time, closer to home, one could enjoy a five-city break in Europe. Carmen imagined cruising on the Danube, the Rhine, and even the Norwegian Fjords sounded fascinating. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d enjoyed a holiday. The annual pilgrimage to Bournemouth, pushing Betty’s wheelchair along the prom during two weeks in the summer, hardly made magical memories of sun, sea and shenanigans.

‘How I long for some shenanigans…’ Carmen said as she stared at the adverts and exotic locations.

But the words of an advert for a lesser-known cruise line suddenly caught Carmen’s eye.

Discover the magic of The Mysteries of the Mediterranean

Embark on an unforgettable journey as you join The Cruise Club on the Diamond Star.

This small luxury liner prides itself on memorable cruises for the more mature. Set sail on an adventure through crystal-clear waters and visit sun-drenched beaches and ancient cities.

Enjoy a comfortable cabin with sea views, plush surroundings and gourmet dining.

The Diamond Star’s talented team will entertain throughout with song, dance, comedy and knowledgeable enrichment speakers.

EXCLUSIVE: Number One Best Selling Author of the award-winning TV Series Detective Inspector Blakeman Investigates RUSKIN REEVE will be on board to host a talk and workshops. For a cruise you will cherish forever – book your dream holiday today!

Carmen felt her pulse quicken as she re-read the advertisement. Her hero, the crime writer Ruskin Reeve, was a guest speaker on this Mediterranean cruise. It must be a sign!

The famed Ruskin Reeve was her inspiration, and she had all his books, in series order, placed prominently on a shelf in her bedroom. She adored the crime writer who wrote tales of intrigue and deception and whose works had captivated readers and critics worldwide, gaining many prestigious awards. Carmen loved how Ruskin pushed the boundaries of the genre with his keen eye for detail and understanding of human psychology, creating complex mysteries and believable characters. The writing gods had guided Carmen, and now, all she had to do was summon the courage to pick up the phone and call the number to book her place on the cruise.

‘If only I could write like you…’ Carmen breathed as she gazed at Ruskin’s photograph, her fingers tracing the outline of the letters of his name.

A voice in her ear whispered, and tilting her head to one side, Carmen felt sure that her dad was speaking. ‘Follow your writing dream!’ he urged.

Carmen desperately wanted to follow Ruskin onto the Diamond Star cruise, to draw inspiration from his knowledge of the complexities of crime writing. Her heart fluttered at the thought of attending his writing workshops. Time with the talented author would surely kickstart her writer’s block and get the words flowing again.

She had to go on the cruise!

Carmen’s hazel eyes sparkled with anticipation, and she pushed her heavy-rimmed glasses along her nose before running her fingers through her shoulder-length brown hair. She could almost feel the warm Mediterranean breeze on her skin and hear the gentle lapping of waves against the ship. Indeed, such a setting would inspire her to write, and it might be the remedy she so desperately needed. After all, it wasn’t as though she couldn’t afford the holiday, and Carmen had a tidy sum in a savings account.

She checked the sailing date and was pleased that the cruise began in just over a week. There was no time to cancel, if she decided to go. Carmen knew that Agnes would be back from her holiday in a couple of days, and with a little gentle persuasion and extra money in her wages, she felt sure that the kindly woman would step up and help with Betty.

Betty. The roadblock in her plan.

The pitfall to the holiday would be Betty’s hysteria when she learnt that her daughter was planning an exciting trip without her mother. Memories of dozens of disappointments, caused by Betty’s interference, flooded Carmen’s mind.

She mustn’t let Betty spoil her plans!

Despite the building guilt, Carmen picked up her pen and circled the cruise agent’s number. For years Carmen had allowed her mother to dictate, often sacrificing her hopes and dreams for peace. But now she felt an unfamiliar, steely resolve.

Straightening her shoulders, Carmen set her jaw with purpose and gripped the pen. This wasn’t just a trip – being in the company of Ruskin Reeve was a necessity, and she knew that she must seize the opportunity.

Carmen dreaded breaking the news to Betty but decided that she would deal with that disaster later. She reached for her phone and began to dial, her heart pounding with a mixture of anxiety and excitement. With a hesitant voice, Carmen began the booking process. Each word she uttered felt like a brick in the foundation of her ongoing writing dream.

‘I’m going on a cruise…’ Carmen whispered in amazement as she ended the call. ‘Carmen Cunningham is about to set sail!’

About The Cruise Club

Cosy crime writer Carmen Cunningham is in trouble. Her inspiration has vanished, her deadline is looming, and her meddling elderly mother Betty consumes her every waking moment.

Hoping to revive her creativity, Carmen books a dream cruise, featuring workshops with her literary idol, Ruskin Reeve. It’s the perfect plan – until Betty insists on tagging along…

However, as the Diamond Star sails through sun-soaked ports and magical Mediterranean islands, Carmen finds the escape she needs as she discovers new friendships, and unexpected sparks with the grumpy, but charming, Ruskin.

But mischief is afoot on board the ship, with talk of items going missing and a secret club that’s got everyone talking… Will the cruise reignite Carmen’s writing muse or plunge her into the biggest plot twist of her life? Because, as she’s about to find out, anything can happen at sea…

Five Stars – Really enjoyed my cruise!

It almost felt as if I was sailing along on this cruise alongside the characters and the wonderful descriptions of places and food made it even more vivid.

I so wanted Carmen to stand up for herself and was definitely on her side as the book progressed. Great to catch up with characters from The French Cookery School, Fran and Sid. After reading this book I don’t think I will ever view depictions of pineapples in the same way again and any references to squid will make me smile.

Loved the fact that there were writers and writing classes on the boat. Theo definitely captured my heart.

Looking forward to the next Caroline James book already. 😄
