*Why Do You Read?

It's raining and cool today, a perfect reading day, and I could finish A Reliable Wife. Yet I considered leaving off where I was and not going back to it and that made me think about why I read.

This is a beautifully written book and I'll say more about that another time. But around 2/3 of the way through, it was so utterly sad that I wondered if the book would descend into that sadness and into despair and end there.

You see, in thinking about it, I realize that I read fiction for hope that...

*FIFA and Fences

I went for a walk this morning and my walk presented me with two views of Toronto. This only makes sense because there are two world events impacting my city, both this month, one hosted here and one not.

The first is the World Cup going on right now in South Africa. You can't get much farther than Toronto or much closer. This is because Toronto is arguably the most multicultural city in the world and we celebrate soccer in a most Canadian way.

Today Portugal won. I know this because on my...

*Picture My Life

A few days ago I was looking at the end table in the corner of the living room, and realizing how much of my life that corner revealed. I took a photo of it so that I can tell you about it.

First of all the roses. My husband got them for me for Rosh Hodesh, which is the new moon of the lunar month, and in Jewish tradition a holiday for women. (There is some textual evidence that at one time it was a more important holiday than the Sabbath, but how it was celebrated and why it r...

*Vanity

And here I am in my new glasses! It is in the mid 20′s C (high 70′s F). I am standing on my back deck under the birch tree. A has been urging me to stop looking at the camera and look at him. I've been trying not to stiffen up the way I do as soon as a camera is on me and I've been laughing at his efforts to distract me.

*Ancient History and Meaning

In a moving (okay honestly it made me bawl) convocation speech, Daniel Mendelsohn spoke about ancient history, the classics, the holocaust, theatre, and time. It's worth reading the whole and I'll provide a link at the end, but here are some highlights:

So much of what we think of as "history" is, really, nothing more than bare bones, lying bleached on a slab, from which the sinews, the cartilage, the secret places inside, the skin and lashes and smell, have been stripped away…Think…of the...

*Art Precedes Life

Oh, I know this isn't of any great importance, but I'm getting new glasses. I'm very excited. They look a bit different than the glasses I usually get. And when the optometrist described them as retro, I knew they were perfect, because the main character of my new novel admires the same glasses when worn by a neighbourhood mom. I wrote that several drafts and three years ago, well before the new Sex In The City movie, according to my young and hipper than me optometrist, made that style...

*After Fear

The cab driver said to his passenger:

Do you know what you'll find on the other side of fear?

No, what?

Everything in your life you've ever dreamed of.

Full story here. It's lovely–read it.
