SNEAK PEEK
It had been five years since I heard his voice. I’ll never forget the sorrowful inflection in it when he broke my heart all those years ago. I stood there humiliated by his words. I’m sorry, I got carried away by the moment, and this should have never happened between us. Please forgive me.
I repeat the words. Ones I hadn’t thought of in a long time. This should have never happened. They’ve haunted me since the day they left his lips and landed on my ears. It had been my twentieth birthday party and Grigsby’s thirty-second. There was something about him that my heart latched on to the first day I saw him sitting behind the wheel of his corvette as he rolled down the window and offered me a ride.
I woke up this morning and heard the voicemail he’d left for me. All those emotions flooded back, squeezing my heart and making it hard for me to breathe. I felt as if I was suffocating, gasping for every breath I took. I’ve learned to live with the hand that I’d been dealt, or at least that’s what I’d told myself after the funeral.

I was disoriented as I woke up. My head pounded with pain, and my stomach contracted as nausea consumed me. Raising my hand to my mouth, I jetted towards the bathroom with the need to hurl. I retched twice and then vomited into the toilet uncontrollably. When a hand grabbed the back of my hair, pulling it away from my face, I screamed. When I turned to confront the person behind me, I hadn’t expected to see Gabriel.
“Where am I, and what are you doing here?” I couldn’t remember anything from the time I closed the door on the Rizzuto woman until now. Gabriel squatted and attempted to lift me from the floor, but I pushed his hands away. “Don’t. I don’t think it's over.” As if on cue, once again, I emptied the contents of my stomach into the commode.
I heard the water running in the sink, and then Gabriel placed a cool washcloth against my forehead. “Where am I?”
His voice was more profound than it was when we were teenagers. Yet, even though there was a gruffness to it, I also heard the underlying compassion.
“You are at Bethany Eastwick’s home.”
“You mean Rizzuto,” I touted back. “Yes, I know that Bethany is a Rizzuto. She explained everything to me when she tried to convince me I was in danger.”
“Yet you chose to ignore her, which is why she drugged you and brought you here herself,” he contended, as if it was justification for her actions.
“She drugged me, took me against my will, and for some reason, you don’t seem to care,” I questioned with narrow eyes.

Sneak Peek - FROM PAST TO PRESENT

CHAPTER ONE
Gabriel
I stood in the doorway of the spare room in Angelo’s home and watched as my daughter slept in Jefferson’s arms. He’d fallen asleep reclined against the headboard with Giovana tucked in nicely beside him, her head resting against his chest and his arms tightly wrapped around her. She’s sleeping peacefully despite her split lip and bruised face, and it hits me how differently tonight could have been if Jefferson hadn’t been here.
I’d had my doubts about whether the boy would ever become a soldier for the family. After all, he hadn’t grown up as part of the Vicci or Rizzuto family. I applauded Angelo and Bethany’s choice to shelter him, hell if it had been me and I’d had the opportunity to leave the family for a good woman, I’m sure I’d have done the same. But tonight, Jefferson proved that you don’t have to be of blood to be a Vicci Soldier. I inwardly chuckle and wish I’d been there to see him pull the trigger earlier, though part of me preferred he’d have never learned to use a gun. The father in me had always prayed Giovanna would find someone outside of this lifestyle, not within the family, and get far away from the possibility that she’d be collateral damage one day because of who I am and what I do.
