My entire world collapsed.

“You done drying that glass?” Zeke asks, looking over at me. “You’ve been wiping it for the last half hour.” I look down and sure enough, I’m holding a glass and a rag. Zeke laughs, “Everything is going to be just fine, Clove. You’ll see.”
“I hope so. I just wish someone would come tell me something.” I sigh, “or at least God could send me a sign.” I say softly. The front door opens, and Talinda, Menace’s ex f–k partner, walks in wearing her barely-there halter top and skin-tight jeans. As she passes by me, she wiggles her fingers in my direction and plasters a smug smile on her face.
“You’re fucking kidding me,” I say as I look up at the ceiling and let out a deep breath. This was not the sign I was looking for. I so don’t need her shit in my bar tonight. I watch her walk toward the swinging doors leading to the bar’s private area. She reaches behind her neck and unties the cloth around her neck, letting her halter drop to her waist as she walks through the batwings and enters the room. Catcalls and whistles fill the bar. Lucky for me, the regular patrons are used to all the craziness.
“There’s your sign.” Zeke laughs.
I throw the bar rag at him, and it falls short and lands on the floor. I’m about to fling the glass at his head but think better of it. I don’t need two men I care about injured.
“And what sign would that be, Zeke? One that reminds me she’ll have a better chance at being his old lady than I will.”
“No, the one that says he’s healthy enough to f–k, so you don’t have to worry about him dying.”

“Doesn’t matter. What matters is the information you are going to tell me.”
The man spat at my feet. “Never.”
“We’ll see,” I said as I raised my pant leg and removed the knife strapped to my ankle from the sheath. “What was in the envelope?” I demanded as I knelt on his uninjured arm.
Again, the man spat at me as he stared at my face. I moved to straddle his body, ensuring he’d have no use of his arms before jamming my blade into his eye socket and extracting his eye. His screams of unbearable pain were music to my ears and the sweet sound of victory.
“What was in the envelope?” I asked one more time and waited for a response. After a few seconds and no response from the still whimpering man, I reached for his head and grabbed his left ear. “Maybe you’re having a hard time hearing me. Here, let me see if this helps.”
Tugging at the piece of flesh, I sliced at it with my blade, removing his complete ear. “Well, shit, that might make it harder for you to hear me.” I laughed as, once again, his screams of agony filled the room. “One last time, what was in the envelope?”
