Why Most Self Help Books Suck

Credit: John Rieber

I was sick of reading self-help book after self-help book, only to be disappointed by the complete lack of actionable advice.

There are a few exceptions of course, but most self-help books seem to only provide the reader with the motivation to take action, but no way to actually do it.

This is why they sell of course; you read the book, feel pumped, and tell your all your friends about this amazing discovery you have made.

Unfortunately the benefits are short lived. When th...

What would you say if you could speak to yourself?

Credit: Alex Baker

I struggle with being alone.

Whenever my wife leaves for a holiday or weekend away, I get progressively more erratic. My mental health drops and I struggle to maintain functionality. She is leaving again in a few days, so unsurprisingly I am nervous.

Regular therapy is a must for me. Both as a prevention as well as a gradual cure (if such a thing is possible) for my mental health issues and past traumas. So today I made sure to address this upcoming event.

I would like to be...

That’s a good observation. It certainly could be a learnt action in children for sure.

100% this.

100% this. There is no method that works for everyone. For me, mindfulness is key, but guided leaves me anxious.

Please do check out my other work and let me know what you think!

I also have a self help book out “How To Get Your Sh!t Together” That you may find interesting.

Why Guided Meditations Make My Anxiety Worse

Credit: Cranach

I love meditation, but can’t stand guided meditations. For years psychologists, support groups, friends and self-help books would recommend one resource or another promising me that ‘this one is different’, or that ‘this one actually works’.

Unfortunately, they all have the same impact on my mental state, namely they have the exact opposite impact of what they should.

They make my anxiety worse.

I think that it comes down to a couple of key factors; a lack of trust in the source,...

The 13 Rules of Drug Dealing I Learnt As The Son Of A Dealer

My father was a drug dealer. He would use the profits from what he sold, to pay for what he used himself.

Growing up I was exposed to his dealing on a daily basis. I watched and learnt. Taking in all of the lessons he didn’t realise he was teaching.

I had to keep myself safe. In that environment, every piece of information helped.

Addicts are notoriously volatile, generally unhinged from reality, and are always desperate to score. Learning how everything worked...
