Why Most Self Help Books Suck
Credit: John RieberI was sick of reading self-help book after self-help book, only to be disappointed by the complete lack of actionable advice.
There are a few exceptions of course, but most self-help books seem to only provide the reader with the motivation to take action, but no way to actually do it.
This is why they sell of course; you read the book, feel pumped, and tell your all your friends about this amazing discovery you have made.

What would you say if you could speak to yourself?

Whenever my wife leaves for a holiday or weekend away, I get progressively more erratic. My mental health drops and I struggle to maintain functionality. She is leaving again in a few days, so unsurprisingly I am nervous.
Regular therapy is a must for me. Both as a prevention as well as a gradual cure (if such a thing is possible) for my mental health issues and past traumas. So today I made sure to address this upcoming event.

100% this. There is no method that works for everyone. For me, mindfulness is key, but guided leaves me anxious.

Why Guided Meditations Make My Anxiety Worse
Credit: CranachI love meditation, but can’t stand guided meditations. For years psychologists, support groups, friends and self-help books would recommend one resource or another promising me that ‘this one is different’, or that ‘this one actually works’.
