Easter Prayer: Sermon on the Mount

This is the first prayer in a series of Easter prayers, featuring photos from my friend’s recent trip to the Holy Land.

Today’s photos were taken at the actual site where the Sermon on the Mount was preached.

How quick we are to forget your teachings, Jesus.

So much like your people in the days you walked this earth,

we forget your words and forsake your authority.

Once you sat on a hillside,

teaching your disciples and anyone who cared to listen.

You taught about blessings for the poor, hungry, downtrodden

rather than the great, mighty, and powerful.

You said we are the salt and light of the world

so valuable to you, yet so rejected by those who don’t understand.

You taught us ways to stop hurting each other.

You warned us against the heartbreak and division

of anger, adultery, divorce.

You asked us to do hard things:

turn our cheeks, walk another mile, love our enemies.

Give in secret, you said.

Pray without pretense.

Forgive others. Live lightly. Be pure.

Don’t worry.

Don’t judge.

Keep asking, seeking, knocking.

Do unto others as you would have done to you.

Follow a narrow path.  Produce good fruit.  Be true and faithful.

Build on a solid foundation, you said.

And you were that solid foundation,

the stone the builders rejected

when the hosannas turned to shouts of hatred.

Why is it so hard for us to remember, Lord?

Why do we ignore the very words that give us life?

Let this Easter be different, Jesus.

Plant your words like seeds in our hearts.

Nourish the seedlings and help them grow

green and verdant

like the hills where your great sermon was preached.

Questions for reflection:

What part of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6 & 7 is most relevant to your life right now?

How can you nourish the seed of God’s word in your heart?

Review: Listen, Love, Repeat

[image error] [image error]

Listen, Love, Repeat: Other-Centered Living in a Self-Centered World[image error] by Karen Ehman

Once again, Karen Ehman delivers a warm, friendly invitation to a deeper walk with God.  In Listen, Love, Repeatshe challenges you to slow down, pay attention, and create an others-focused life.  Full of personal stories and practical tips, this book is a valuable resource. It even has recipes!

In one chapter, Karen expounds on an analogy Paul used in 1 Thessalonians 2:7-8, a picture of a nursing mother caring for her children.

Karen writes,

As many of you have experienced, being a nursing mother takes a lot out of you both physically and emotionally.  You cannot be on your own schedule.  You have to interrupt what you are doing in order to nourish the body of your child.  To nurse a child you must stop.  Sit down.  Take time.  You must for the moment put your child’s needs before your own.  Certainly the act of nursing a baby is sharing life in a sacrificial way.

This quote speaks from the heart of this book: structure your days so you have time to minister to others.  Karen writes about different kinds of people to whom you can minister, and gives creative ideas for each group.  She shows you how to minister to those who grieve, to necessary people like the mail carrier, to the lonely, to those who are cranky, and of course, to your family.

I also liked the concept of listening for a heart drop.  Listening in this way is like doing detective work for God’s kingdom. Heart drops are clues to ways you can minister.  Karen provides many do-able ideas for everyday ministry in Listen, Love, Repeat.

When you are walking closely with God, you become more like Jesus, and you look for ways to serve others. This book will open your eyes to new ways of everyday ministry you likely haven’t considered before.

The online Bible study of Listen, Love, Repeat begins TODAY at Proverbs 31 Ministries.  Sign up for the online Bible study with me, which runs April 3 to May 5, 2017.

Self-Control: Defining Boundaries

Today’s Five Minute Friday prompt is “Define.”  I chose to combine it with my focus on the fruit of self-control.

Once I heard:  Good fences make good neighbors.

Today I am setting stone walls

of self-control, walls to contain

my sprawling city, so prone

toward selfishness.

On the north side I set stones

to define boundaries

around self-pity.

On the east side I set stones

to define boundaries

around criticism.

On the south side I set stones

to define boundaries

around indulgence.

On the west side I set stones

to define boundaries

around sloth.

My four weaknesses

clearly defined, no longer

seeping out like sludge

into green pastures.

This bustling city in my heart

is now restored

to peace.

Want to learn more about my pursuit of self-control? Watch this video!

Questions for reflection:

Which of your weaknesses needs the walls of self-control?

How can practicing self-control grant you greater peace?

He is Faithful

How faithful you have been, Lord,

in each of my seasons.

You set your word in my heart

and held my hand

when I was learning to walk.

You held me close

when my little girl heart was broken.

You rose with me

on those dark mornings

when I had to grow up too fast

and planted the beautiful dream of family

in my heart.

You walked beside me

in the lonely seasons

the mocked seasons

the sorrowful seasons.

Faithfully you watched over me.

Faithfully you kept me from harm

and from harming myself.

Faithfully you whispered your word

into my ears, reminding me

of your everlasting love.

When I rebelled

you did not reject me.

When I came crawling back

you accepted me.

When I sought healing

you never shamed me

but sutured my wounds

and smoothed on your salve.

In the valleys

you carried me.

On the mountaintops

you rejoiced with me.

In each season you stretched me

strengthened me

and shaped me

to be more like you.

Because you have been faithful to me

I want to be faithful to you.

I seek the regular rhythms

of worship, confession, repentance, praise.

I seek your presence in the morning

in the afternoon

in the evening.

In these faithful rhythms

I find your love

your joy

and your peace.

Questions for reflection:

How has God faithfully walked with you through your seasons?

How can you praise him today for his faithfulness to you?

How Humility Tempers Knowledge

Happy to share this post on Bethany McIlrath’s blog today!  Visit her directory for more posts on idolizing knowledge.

I am a recovering know-it-all.

It didn’t help to grow up in an environment where knowledge was valued at a premium. Good grades were a must, as was the ability to speak with intelligence on just about every subject.

That’s really hard to pull off when you’re young and still learning.

But I wanted to please, so I tried.

And failed.

In high school and college, I took part in conversations that were over my head.  I didn’t really have anything to contribute, but I wanted to appear smart.  So I’d fake it, scraping bits and pieces of loose knowledge together to offer a seemingly intelligent response.  Yet I secretly feared someone would call my bluff and see through my desperate attempt to cling to my know-it-all mask.

What a fruitless pursuit.

I didn’t gain closeness with the smart kids, the fellow know-it-alls puffed up in their own knowledge, wanting only to prove themselves.  I sought acceptance and intimacy, impossible to find in a contest of the minds where opponents seek to dominate.

This pursuit continued until I was in my thirties.  The cost was steep.  My puffed-up knowledge created awkward situations and turned people away.  Some people told me I was intimidating.  I hated that label.  That’s not how I saw myself.  But as my faith life became more alive and personal, I sought to change it.

I studied the scriptures.  Jesus knew EVERYTHING, yet he was so humble, washing his disciples’ feet on the very night they would all desert him.  He intentionally subverted his knowledge to interact with regular human beings like me.  If Jesus humbled himself, surely I could do the same.

Jesus humbled himself in obedience to God, and I want to do the same.

I reflected on my education and work experience.  I was in the gifted program in high school and graduated with high honors.  Disillusion came crashing down on me as a college graduate.  Instead of creating art and writing poetry, I answered phones and sorted mail for a dollar over minimum wage.  Again and again my work experience stood in high contrast to my education and my expectations.

As I reflected on those times, I realized God had used my trials to humble me.  I no longer saw myself as fully capable of answering every question and solving every problem.  He humbled me through work, and that was good for me.

I reflected on my childhood.  The person who overvalued knowledge probably regretted not pursuing higher education, and unintentionally cultivated toxic seeds.  I think they struggle deep inside with a lack of self-worth and cover it over with layers and layers of knowledge.  I didn’t notice that as a child.  I have compassion now I see that truth.  I also see how a lack of humility has cost this person many relationships.  I don’t want to bear that cost in my own life.

By pursuing humility over knowledge, my relationships will thrive.

Click To Tweet

Recently I took a spiritual gifts inventory, similar to the test I took 20 years ago.  In both tests, knowledge was in my top three strengths.  Knowledge is a gift God gives me.  It belongs to him, and he is trusting me to use knowledge for his glory.  He wants me to draw people to him with knowledge, not push them away.

The only way I can draw people to God with knowledge is to temper it with humility.  Knowledge is strong and powerful.  It will overwhelm people, like a too-bright beam of sunlight on my houseplants.  If I filter the light by tilting the blinds of humility, knowledge promotes health and growth.

I like this verse in 1 Peter 5:6 (NLT):

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.

I’m no longer on a quest to puff myself up with knowledge.  I have hope that God can teach me a new way to use what I’ve learned.  He’s gifted me with knowledge, but he’s also granted me humility.  I am hoping God will continue to soften my heart with humility and temper my knowledge with wisdom.

Now I’m pursuing humility with a passion, trusting that God will lift me up in honor as he so chooses.  I want to be rewarded more for humility than knowledge, placing a premium on what God values most.

Questions for reflection:

In what ways do you struggle with puffed-up knowledge?

How can following Jesus’ example of humility breathe life into your relationships?

Embracing Change With Thanksgiving

Writing for five unedited minutes on the prompt “Embrace” for Five Minute Friday.

Change, my new and unfamiliar friend

wraps me in an embrace

these cool spring mornings.

Every time I see a new sunrise

I embrace a morning of change.

Nothing is new with you, Lord.

A thousand days are one to you.

But for me

change is constant as ocean waves

especially in this year of movement.

I weather these upcoming changes

with thankfulness and reflection.

Your constancy steadies me

as I prepare to take a leap.

Your faithfulness carries me through

this windy, wild season.

Your presence walks with me

as I navigate new places.

I thank you for new life.

I thank you for your perfect timing.

I thank you for staying by my side

when everything is shifting.

No motion is too strong for you.

No wind is too powerful.

When you called Peter out on the water

you had perfect dominion.

I am stepping out of the boat

placing my feet on the unstable surface

and reaching for the security

of your waiting embrace.

Want to learn more about the big changes God is bringing to my life? Watch my new Facebook video!

Questions for reflection:

How is God calling you to step out of the boat and onto the water?

How does God’s character anchor you in times of change?

Choosing the Fruit of Goodness

When I became a mother, my senses were sharpened to notice worldly influences on my children.

I had new eyes.  Television shows became a minefield of questionable content.  I became more alert, even when watching commercials.  So many images had to be blocked and hidden from my children’s innocent eyes.

I had new ears.  Lyrics I had enjoyed before were unsafe for my children.  I found myself turning the volume down and switching radio stations way more often.

I had new lips.  With a desire to feed my children healthy food, I paid more attention to the preservatives and additives in our purchases.  I made changes to my cooking habits and bought more fruits and vegetables.

After making better choices for my children’s sake, I tasted the fruit of goodness myself.  I didn’t miss racy or morbid television shows.  I didn’t want to listen to negative, worldly music anymore either.  I craved healthy food more than junk food.

Tasting the fruit of the spirit creates a craving for goodness.

Click To Tweet

God used those years to sanctify me…a fancy theological word for cleaning, making holy.  I believe God wanted to set me apart from the world as a special treasure for himself, and He was sanctifying me with goodness.

His light in me created a craving for goodness.  The closer I depended on Him as a young mom, the more I longed for what is good and right and true.

Even though my children are older now, I still choose the fruit of goodness for them and for myself.  We’re engaging with media differently, building critical thinking skills.  I allow them some freedom in eating junk food, but the majority of their diet is healthy and wholesome.  I pray that as they grow, they will choose the fruit of goodness because they saw me choosing it for myself.

Questions for reflection:

How did your choices change when you became a mom?

How does the fruit of goodness produce healthy cravings in your spiritual life?

Review: Zip It

Zip It: The Keep It Shut 40-Day Challenge[image error] by Karen Ehman

As a member of Compel Training, I’ve come to know Karen Ehman through video teachings.  She has a warm, inviting writing and speaking style I find appealing.  She wrote Zip It as a companion to Keep It Shut: What to Say, How to Say It, and When to Say Nothing at All[image error]a book I’m now rushing to read.

In Zip It, she addresses the many ways we can practice greater self-control in speaking.  She tells her motivation for writing this book:

…as I surveyed my life a few years ago, I observed that I could tether almost every tense or fractured relationship I’d had back to something I said.

Ouch, how I can relate!  That’s why I want to learn more about self-control in speaking.  Karen continues,

As God began to deal with me about the way I used my words, I learned to apply the vast advice the Bible has for us about how we should–and should not–speak.

This book is structured in 40 devotions with a personal anecdote, two takeaways, one short lesson, and a prayer.  I especially enjoyed Karen’s warm, funny anecdotes which stirred my thinking about all the ways I can improve the way I speak and think.  She offers deep insights into Bible passages and then gives great application tips.  For example, she outlined three parables in Matthew 9, then shows how Jesus hears my unspoken words, the words I speak, and the words I say to myself. I had never linked those passages together before, and I appreciated Karen’s fresh observations.

Since I enjoyed Zip It so much, I want to backtrack and pick up a copy of Keep It Shut.  I want to honor God with my words and thoughts, and these books will convict me and challenge me to new obedience.

I’m also now reading Karen’s book Listen, Love, Repeat: Other-Centered Living in a Self-Centered World[image error] in preparation for the upcoming online Bible study at Proverbs 31 Ministries.  Sign up for the online Bible study with me, which runs April 3 to May 5, 2017.  Next week I’ll post a review of Listen, Love, Repeat.

I received a free copy of Zip It: The Keep It Shut 40-Day Challenge[image error] from the BookLook Bloggers Program in exchange for my honest review.

Fasting for Spiritual Wellness

I am thrilled that my friend Jill Hoven hosted me as a guest post writer for her blog Follow His Footprints this week.

Do you sacrifice anything for the Lenten season?

I grew up in a tradition of observing Lent as a time of sober contemplation and confession.  Yet I didn’t grow up in a tradition of fasting at any time, Lent included.

This year is the first time I’ve given up something for Lent.  While writing my new book, The Fruitful Life, in February, the Holy Spirit convicted me when I wrote the chapter on self-control.  He showed me my all-out addiction to sweets and how it blocks my spiritual growth.  He encouraged me to give sugar up this Lenten season so I could experience new blessings.

On Ash Wednesday, I began my sugar-free journey.  It’s been a week now as of this writing, and here are five lessons I’ve gained by fasting for spiritual wellness.

Five Minute Friday: Friend

Writing for five unedited minutes on the prompt “Friend” for Five Minute Friday.

Oh, my sweet daughter,

I hate to see your heart break.

Your friend, the one who writes you sparkly notes

the one who gives you hugs whenever you meet

the one who soothed you when another girl turned her back

snubbed you on the playground.

Yesterday you entered the car crying

no longer able to hold it in.

Dear one, you are only eight years old

and your heart has already broken twice

over the complicated nature of girl friendships.

How I understand.

I remember trying so hard

and falling down flat.

I remember

the mean looks, the whispers, the cold stares

from those who I thought cared.

I also remember

sometimes dishing out

what I didn’t want to receive.

I’m sorry to say

it’s only beginning.

But I also tell you:

You are not alone.

Jesus is always at your side.

He loves you for who you are.

He created you as an artist, a reader, a sensitive soul.

They may not understand you

just as they didn’t understand me.

I know how lonely it can be.

Yet you are beautiful inside and out.

If you can’t do a flip on the monkey bars

or run fast or shoot baskets

I promise it won’t matter

when you’re grown up.

But I know it matters now.

I’m praying for you, love.

I’m praying God will give you one good friend

to listen to your secrets and keep them safe.

One good friend to smile and laugh with you.

One good friend to share new perspectives

and challenge your sharp edges.

Just one friend

to hold your hand

and walk beside you

in this long, difficult,

complex, beautiful life.
