A man respected by many for his courage and his character, has come to his end.

I did not have much opportunity to interact with The Private Man over the last year and half. But it was deeply clear from the respect that was shown to him, and the bright impacts he made on his fellow men, that he was a very special man with insights well-worth discovering and learning from.
My sincere condolences to his wife and family. May they find comfort in the knowledge that his work lives on beyond him, and that the legacy of his teaching will continue to reach men in need for generations.
May they find warm memories as a source of loving comfort and sweet remembrance.

Welcome To The Ivan Letters
A few quick thoughts from the desk of Ivan Throne.
As the spring rolls forward there’s an enormous amount of work taking place here at DARK TRIAD MAN®.
Much of it is behind the scenes and not entirely visible to the general public. It has been taking up a great deal of my time and making regular posts difficult. The solution to this is to diversify a bit. And one of the things that I recognize the need for is shorter, much more frequent posts here on the site in addition to the deeper Knowledge Base articles that form the heart of it.
Thus welcome to the first of what will be a new and familiar type of post. No images or in depth structured training – those will be reserved for Level I, Level II and Level III articles that take a different type of time, research and consideration to prepare, write, edit and deliver. These are my direct and personl updates to you.
The Ivan Letters are quick, short and consumable. And enable me to reach you faster.
You’ll get them more regularly, interspersed through the deeper and more profound articles that are planned for this year.

CRYPTO FASHIONS will soon have official DARK TRIAD MAN® shirts available. They have a very responsive team and we’ve been working on some absolutely fantastic designs for the last several weeks. Final versions will be approved very soon.
THE FORTRESS is in beta testing with over 100 participants (yes, you can join in). Private chat with both myself and the brothers, training forums, professional mastermind squads and more. It is a fast growing community with names you’ll recognize.
THE NINE LAWS is being outlined for three very different Special Annotated Editions designed for dissemination and use in specifically challenging and focused group environments. This will not likely be launched this year, but planning is being laid.
THE NINE LAWS audiobook is also underway. It’s challenging to do the recording – as I cannot listen to playbacks myself – but nonetheless with the help of Castalia House sound editors, we’ll have it launched this year.

I have also been meeting in person with a few of the brothers inspired by my work. They are engaged in political leadership in different states. I won’t share the names nor the details. But I will say this: it is time to connect people to opportunities, and pull some surprisingly long levers in the darkness.
The next several years will be crucial for those preparing for political office in 2018 and 2020. There are men who intend to win, and there are victories I plan to ensure.

How To Profit From Breakout Of Deadly Political Violence

The new age is rising swiftly, and it increases with momentum and intensity with each passing day. It is changing the nature of civil discourse, political engagements and violent interation in the streets of the nations of the West.
Do you understand that this is not an arrestable process, and that the grave denouement of many generations now cascades with grim and deadly purpose?
Avoid the mistake of dismissing what I say as mere encouragement to those who are already in resurgent motion towards civilizational and cultural dominance. You will not be served by such stupidity.
Your adversaries will.

War, politics, profit and the Dark Triad Man.
Energy is a fluid, living thing. So are political scenes and dramas, the flow and ebb of morale and momentum, policies and proponents. As a part of this political scene you are inherently an observer and an influencer. Illusions of detachment from this are precisely that: unreal, insubstantial, and folly.
“But I don’t engage in politics, Ivan” says the declared neutral. “I’m an independent. I don’t go to rallies. I don’t discuss politics, I’m not interested in it, and it doesn’t impact my day to day life.”
This is the voice of a fool.
Carl Philipp Gottfried von Clausewitz explained this well.
“War is a continuation of politics by other means.”
What is war? War is the use of force to achieve political objectives.
You are, as a human being, inherently engaged in war.
Do you disagree?
Are you immune to the lethal force of the State? Do you believe you are separated from the rest of humanity, somehow exceptional, immune to the reality of national governments?
Perhaps. Perhaps you are a fugitive, an outlaw, on the run from the Leviathan.
Then they catch you.
The very act of fleeing is indeed engagement, albeit reversed, from that lethal force of the State which is, after all, merely the physical expression of determinative policy of national leaders.
Yet there is a means to grasping, understanding, and working within this reality. Comprehension that power is a form of energy and that the force of the State – and, therefore, its politics – are also forms of energy leads the man of perception and perspective to a basal frame that permits his profit.
Let us define “profit” here.
Profit does not mean accumulation of cash, although that is certainly a form of it.
Profit as defined by the Dark Triad Man is the incremental advancement of his existence along The Nine Laws.
When your survival is promoted, you attain profit.
When your concealment is facilitated, profit ensues.
When your purpose is advanced, you have profited.
This is true for the rest of The Nine Laws as well. Profit is a concept, a principle, and not merely an outcome. Comprehend this principle, align your methods towards its achievement, and train well and ceaselessly in techniques that ensure it becomes a consistent frame.
Embody this appellation of profit as understood and utilized by the Dark Triad Man.
Use that to profit from the knowledge in this post.
Today is a good day to profit. The current political scene is tumultuous as it pivots, and the opportunities for the Dark Triad Man are enormous.

The rise of alternative movements has achieved breakout.
Breakouts are critical pivot points. Just as a dam bursts, a limb snaps and an enterprise shudders and begins to collapse, breakouts are an integral part of both energy and of political movements, situations and flow.
Today we see the AltRight rising as the vanguard of the West, growing fast, and in fact taking over the very structure of the State.
Donald J. Trump is the President of the United States. He is an offensive leader, not a reactionary one, and his direct movement to smash the Deep State is a sharp marker that defines and differentiates him.
AltTech is sharply picking up the rear, with Infogalactic and Gab encroaching with aggressive movement to crack apart the dominance of the major players. Men like Peter Thiel, Vox Day, Andrew Torba and others are working to fund, generate and crack apart the SJW-converged digital spaces.
AltMedia has crippled and savaged the old guard of the mass media. #FakeNews is now an ubiquitous challenge, and what was unthinkable only a few short years ago is today the reality of the surging moment. Last night Mike Cernovich went on 60 Minutes and had over ten million viewers, drawing praise for his aggressive – and successful – posture and delivery.
AltFinance prepares to launch. And while I cannot reveal specifics, I can say that I have seen its guts and plans and the men that I speak with are prepared to eviscerate the crowdfunding platforms that have been a tool of the Left and their disgusting, social justice warrior hordes.
Understand momentum!
Understand the importance of morale!
A new spirit has thoroughly permeated, with infectious brilliance, the models and structures and mindsets of the alternative movements.
Harambe and Gorilla Mindset. Pepe and Kek. BasedStickMan and BasedElbowMan.
BasedFlagIvan, too.
Memes have indeed become sentient, and those who look for the source of morale among the Right will do well to understand the integral nature of this spirit.
Let us segue to an example of an unstoppable military conqueror.
Recall Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Taikō, he who unified Japan under his iron fist. He rose from a peasant to become the supreme military commander of a nation wracked by over 400 years of brutal internecine civil war.
And they said something marvelous about that man and his work:
“Where Hideyoshi’s army marches, the spring wind blows.”
He was the herald of the new age.
You who read this, who follow my work and the work of others such as Vox Day, Milo Yiannopoulos, Mike Cernovich and others…
…you are the army, and the spring wind brings the fragrance of something long denied to the West.
That scent is victory, and it is beautiful.
Seize this momentum! Expand this morale! Train hard, and cement it all in the brutal reality of the dark world. Understand that those who oppose you will also and inexorably harden themselves as well.
Antifa is a joke today. Their beatings on the beach in California have gone viral, but such a thing is ephemeral. Humiliation drives men to harden, and we will see the violent anarchists of the Black Bloc begin to produce crueler, more competent leaders.
Prepare well.
Capacity, competence, forbearance and confusion.
The roots of the Antifa and Black Bloc movements go back to the early 20th century. This post is not a history lesson so we will not examine what you have the means to explore and study yourself. Google is not your friend, but research is.
Do your research. And review the Red Scare of the era, the bombings and the murders, the willingness of the Left to engage in violent crime to further its goals.
Keep ever in mind that such methods are how human beings have ever, and will always, operate.
The dark world does not change.
Yet the Antifa and Black Bloc of today are not direct and competent inheritors of those historical movements. They fall prey to the great hobbling limitation of all anarchist and collectivist movements: they do not structure and organize well without personalities capable of commanding men through mesmerized fascination, employing what the Dark Triad Man refers to as enthrallment.
It is challenging and requires great fortitude and acceptance of risk to attempt to rise as a charismatic leader in any environment. Within the leftist collective, it becomes even more challenging thanks to its inherent preference for leveled influence.
Thus those men who rise as leaders on the Left trend towards the more competent and dangerous.
Be well aware of this, and take note early.
The strategic foundation of the Left lies in envy and resentment. These are normal human qualities and are therefore consistent and dependable; human beings will invariably produce these sentiments, attach them to political movements, and the Left is well aware of it and will not hesitate to exploit it for their own profit.
Thus from a strategic standpoint they are immortal.
The tactical presentation of any movement nonetheless remains transient.
Anarchist movements are inherently tactically bereft; the concept of disciplined troops, commanded by a ruthless and competent man who enforces dominant hierarchical structure and performance, is relatively anathema to their rank and file. This is both weakness and strength; it facilitates the organic growth of nebulous and diffused cell generation, much like a cancer.
It is also a weakness where application of direct, disciplined force is applied.
Anarchists are not prepared to operate on the ground in direct opposition to trained, equipped and indomitable men who grimly intend to own that ground.
Understand what it takes. Absorb analyses from men like Tom Kratman that dissect and discuss the correct approach to smashing anarchist hordes on the ground. Part I, Part II and Part III of his works on rioting are critical reading.
You do not need to be a civil disturbance S.W.A.T. team leader or trained to the level of Mr. Swift to profit from this knowledge.
Study, learn and remember.
Propaganda imagery, memes and narratives from the Inauguration and Huntington Beach.
Millions of people have seen Richard Spencer punched in the face in Washington, D.C. by a Black Bloc protestor. The bounty at WeSearcher for his assailant’s identification and arrest has risen past $5,000 and continues to climb.
That was a strong propaganda moment and the Left has exploited it to infest its ground troops with increased morale and determination, driven by the drama of the video and the well-encapsulated furtherance of the “Punch a Nazi” meme.
This past weekend on Huntington Beach in California, the narrative pivoted as the nation watched the Antifa and Black Bloc activists chased down, beaten, unmasked, bitten by dogs, arrested and now charged with felony crimes.
Understand that while memetic narratives and propaganda are useful, they are also inherently transient and easily replaced by subsequent imagery that captures the imagination of the crowd.
A beach scuffle, delightful as it may be, is not a turning point.
The turning point is the willingness of the Right to abandon forbearance and fight.
A fighting movement is far more powerful than a quiescent one.
This is why cuckservatives lose, and why the Left – which views power as an absolute prize, and is willing to murder millions of human beings without remorse or hesitation – more easily embodies it.
The Left is willing to destroy, and therefore is basally more powerful than those who tag themselves as “conservative” and seek to preserve, defensively, what has been built.
The vast difference between the AltRight and conservatives is the nature of the movement.
The AltRight is an offensive movement.
It is a fighting movement and explicitly so.
What happens when two fighting movements contest the same ground, the same heart of power, and are reinforced with resentment, abandoned forbearance, loathing and determination?
What takes place on the ground when social justice warriors double down with violence, and the Right at last feels that it no longer must restrain its impulse to conserve, and decides to meet destruction with determinative consequence?
The collision is existential.
The disciplined army wins.
Enjoy the contest, for it has been long coming. Take pleasure as it arises from the release of inhibition and the unleashing of competence. But accept that the experience of relief can be fatal. Drive deliberate awareness into your joy at the shuddered breakout, at last, of fighting response from the Right instead of the mere pontificating and defeatist virtue signal of the past!
But do not neglect reality.
I tell you that the dark world delights in upset and does not favor any man. Ugly and terrible surprises await those who believe themselves inevitably victorious.
Train. Train specifically for moments, and train in techniques. Study methods, and learn to recognize them when employed against you. Grasp and embody principles, and let your vision include both twins of defeat and victory and the paths to both.
It is the Way.
Build the powerful infrastructure today that secures future dominance.
Who are your brothers that will stand with you in the line of battle on the street?
Know them, train with them, and become a unit that withstands shock and drives into the heart of the adversary’s ranks on the ground with remorseless competence.
Where do opportunities to secure actionable data arise that can be put to exponential use?
Spot them, exploit them, harvest them and deliver your findings and your insight and your awareness to the service of those who are building the intelligence services of the new age.
When will the lethal forces of the State support or deny you, back you or trample you?
Liaison with them, build relationships with them, and entangle and entwine with their communications, their processes, their facilities and their organs.
Leverage all things.
Such leverage is the heart of profit!
Understand this and contemplate with care.
Look well, o wolves!
For the field is well contested.
Take steps today to connect and train.

Antifa “Revolutionary Anarchists” Absolutely Wet For Ivan Throne
Sometimes shudders of fan love are fascinating.
×NoteI completely disavow paying anything to It’s Going Down for over three thousand of words of gorgeous, unstinting flattery.
My speech tomorrow at the Turning Point USA Mountain West Regional Conference in Denver will be a magnificent pleasure. That pleasure is highlighted by two events over the last two weeks that showcase both the nature of the opposition to the event, and also roundly demonstrated a process known as “qualification”.
The first is my game of Capture the Flag with violent anarchists protesting the March 4 Trump rally in Denver two weeks ago.
(That video will probably cross 30,000 views this weekend.)
The second was brought to my attention this afternoon. The largest “revolutionary anarchist” site has penned a several-thousand-word screed against me, and it’s really rather lovely.
It’s Going Down has gotten quite moist over the whole thing.
Understand how qualification works in conflict with the unskilled.
Qualification is an important concept, one that is exploited to vivisect the adversary on a number of different levels. Qualification is inadvertent validation, a revelation from the adversary, a truth spoken unintended and an exposure of posture.
Let us examine a very simple example.
“You think you’re a big deal, driving that hot sports car.”
The person speaking is engaged in qualification of the listener, of the target. Let’s look at what that really says:
“You’re a bigger deal than me. Your car is hot. And I’m envious.”
Let’s keep that in mind as we dissect the article from It’s Going Down.

Finding the exposed heart, mind and hand of the adversary: the facts amid the fun.
“Ivan has our attention.”
“He’s dangerous, unusual, icy.”
“Ivan brings a lot to the table.”
“He isn’t the least bit afraid of us.”

As I noted, sometimes it really is quite lovely when chittering, sobbing leftists cannot help themselves but melt. One should not think too badly of them for demonstrating such leakage of passion, however. The competence of the professional and the detachment of the executive are not within their experience, their training or their proclivities.
Wait until they see me attired in Hugo Boss in my role as Head of the AltRight Secret Police.
If this IGD article is any indication, you’ll be pushing them off the street with mops.
But do not underestimate the danger that they represent.
Gavrilo Princep was an incompetent as well.

Blood On Marble
All things only take one man.
Today is the Ides of March.
Gaius Julius Caesar was butchered by the Roman Senate 2,060 years ago today.
In remembrance of the greatest military commander the world has ever known, let this excerpt from Chapter 12 of The Nine Laws serve as an elegy to his brilliance, his honor and his glory.
Read well, my brothers, and grasp that there is always a Caesar waiting.
The Ninth Law is No Laws.
Blood On Marble.
The man fell to the floor as his adversaries plunged bitter steel into his limbs, his abdomen, his groin. Blood drenched his rich robes, glistening in dark rivulets and pooling on the marble floor.
Steel flashed and drops of crimson spattered as the crowd of men continued to stab him. The scrape of metal on bone resounded as the blades hacked, and the gasps and grunts of men engaged in killing echoed through the theater.
He flinched involuntarily as each honed edge drove into him, opening his body and spilling his life out. Eventually the conspirators backed away, knives dripping and horror irrevocably committed.
He had received over a score of wounds.
Yet only one of them was mortal.
They left him there to bleed out. And so the man died slowly, pulling his robe over his face to expire with the remaining private dignity he could muster.
Gaius Julius Caesar lay butchered on the cold marble and those murderous, regicidal senators would soon follow him in death. The Republic itself would pass away, and his nephew Octavian would assume the mantle of Augustus, the revered, the emperor.
Nothing had stopped Caesar from crossing the Rubicon with his army and entering Rome, violating the great law of the Republic and establishing himself as perpetual dictator.
He cast his lot with fate, made his own law, and entered immortality.
This is the true way of the dark world.
Nothing stops men from toppling Caesars with steel and treason, whether in the ancient days of Rome or in the modern age where dictators are put up against a wall after a drumhead court martial and summarily blown to shattered bits of gristle and bone.
Nothing stops men from rising to the state of Caesar with intrigue, alliance and war. There is no prevention, there is no prohibition, and a door unlocked and a door wide open are the same thing.
There is a single thread, infinitely thin, entangled through every story of history where brutal sovereigns rise and noble revolutionaries fight; where sadistic apparatchiks take over a people or a vivid-eyed corporal marches to the role of Leader and oversees the bureaucratic extermination of millions.
That thread is the final, chaotic reality of the dark world.
It is the truth that there is no such thing as law.
Law may cause men to investigate your death, but it will not save you in the moment of truth.
Law may spring forth grand temples and ceremony designed in its honor, but the farthest private room of the king is where real decisions are made, and the truth is that law is simply all for show.
It comes down in the end to human beings, making decisions, and shaping a new world in their image.
Conquerors have risen and marched through the ages. Tyrants have ascended as well; the story is as old as man himself and this process of insurgent, unstoppable Caesars is inherent to our species.
It is only a fool who believes that the door of the global warlord and world conqueror is locked.
Fool, I tell you today that it is not even a doorway, but a roaring highway that does not sleep.
This is the last of The Nine Laws, and it is the deadliest. It gives birth to all others.
There are no laws that hold in the end.
It is all simply the collusion of the capable, the outcome of the winner, and the survival or death of the rest.
Understand this well.
There will be a day when the entire Earth is united under a single bloody standard, and one man walks to his bedchamber as the glorious, glittering lord of the entire human race.
Every day brings it one step closer.
Do you believe he will rule with benevolence?

When Violent Rioters Boil In Failed Shame
Social justice warriors always double down.
Last Saturday there were March 4 Trump rallies across the country. Patriots, activists, citizens and their families gathered to demonstrate support for the new President of the United States and his agenda for the nation and the West in the new age.
Of course, there were protestors. There always are at any political event. However, one of the features of the political landscape on the ground today is the coalescence of criminal Antifa and Black Bloc activists who openly encourage and call for violent action against individuals, groups and institutions.
As Vox Day has noted in his groundbreaking book SJWs Always Lie, you can inevitably depend on social justice warriors to do three things:
Lie
Project
Double down
These inherent compulsions of the social justice warriors often lead them – both individually and in groups – to engage in absolutely ridiculous behavior.
Take full advantage of it, both in tactical response and in delightful humor.
Sobbing idiots who cannot see past their own manufactured illusions.

When all you have is a swastika, all you can see are Nazis. Everything is “Nazi” this and “Nazi” that. “Homophobe” here and “Homophobe” there. “Transphobe” (really, how can you tell) is mixed in with bizarre references to the Klu Klux Klan, which hasn’t been even a miniscule force in American politics for several generations.
But don’t mistake their silly, spoiled and childish caricature of politics for the only reality.
Violent anarchists in the streets are well funded and have structured plans.
Much is made of the Soros influence and funding of Black Bloc and Antifa activism, including paid professional agitators who travel from country to country. They have been tracked from the G8 summits to the Trump inauguration and other public events. Concern over this strain of virulent destabilization is accurate and appropriate.
Professional agitators such as Lacy MacCauley and Legba Carrefour are not the only risk.
The IWW are reported to be funding and facilitating combat training. There are Antifa fight clubs internationally. There is, additionally, a severe escalation that has been confirmed by the VIOLENT.SOLUTIONS project.
We have reviewed video evidence from recent Antifa and Black Bloc events and identified private military contractors in their ranks.
Someone is paying for that, and such resources are expensive.
We’ll talk more about that at the end of this post.
In the meantime, here’s what’s taking place in Denver.
My recent confrontations with anarchists in Denver have pissed them off.
The Left began tracking me on the site of the Supreme Dark Lord some time back in late January.
On January 25th, Milo Yiannopoulos spoke at the local university in Boulder, Colorado. Mr. Swift and I were present as VIP attendees and guests of Turning Point USA. Both before and after the event we were up close with the Antifa and Black Bloc protestors, as you can see in my recorded Periscope stream.

The Reaper’s Strange Gift: A Perspective From The Edge
What do you do when the Reaper comes for tea?

“Quiet. Quiet! Medical Emergency!”
I look to my right, where my neighbor is collapsing on the floor at the end of a local meeting. And what goes through my mind is:
“Oh. Crap.”
I’m trained if first aid, including CPR. I trained when I was a SCUBA instructor. I trained during a neighborhood CERT course. But I trained years ago. Now I’m balanced on a split-second, asking whether I trust “years ago” training to save my neighbor’s life.
I had read Hunter’s excellent article just days before, and “that day” has come. Come? Hell, it just kicked down the door. The feeling in my heart, as I face it, is not confidence.
It can happen to you. Oh, yes it can.
“The difference between being a hero and being a zero is having a plan.”
The Family Alpha: Are You Prepared?
I didn’t have a plan. That was terrifying.
What I did have, was a mindset. A mindset that starts with one bedrock principle:
Being a zero is not an option.
That is not who I am. I am going to do something. I may lose, and I have. I may curse myself later for being unprepared. Doesn’t matter right now. I am going to do something. Lead!
Hesitation over. Older man down on his back, eyes rolled, looks like very little breathing, not dilated (instant mental flash: “heart attack”). Ok, then. Leaders assemble the right people. Command voice time:
“CPR! We need CPR! Does anyone know CPR?”
I would be that guy if I had to be, but I wanted someone better than I was.
The Reaper’s lessons, part one.
1. Relevant items from Ivan’s 100 Dark World Lessons: #1, 3, 6, 21, 36, 41, 91.
2. A paper certificate is not the measure of skill. Practice is. The world is a dark place, and getting darker. If you aren’t off your butt already, get off. It can happen to you.
a) Imagine three situations where you could be called on in a crisis. What skills would you need? Pick at least one of those skills, and make serious progress in learning and practice within the next thirty days. At the end of thirty days, imagine the relevant situation with your new skill. How does it feel?
3. You can’t practice everything, but you’re going to have to live with your choices. Choose wisely. You really, really don’t want to face The Reaper with less than your best.
4. If you don’t have a plan, or even if you do, mindset matters. Poor tools may do – if you will do.
a) The foundation of mindset is identity. Who are you deciding to be, right now? Because who you will be on The Day is really a decision you made long beforehand.
b) Ivan’s The Nine Laws offer a fundamental mental OS that makes you likely to do. Hunter’s Men of March offers a kick-ass daily program connecting men to their masculine selves. Don’t play the Harvard MBA B.S. that teaches the importance of stepping up confidently even if you have no clue. When they play mock survival situations, their teams often die – even though members had survival expertise. Step up, sure. Project confidence, sure. Those things are a service to others. Ditto leading with ego if you genuinely know. But deployment of ego should be a conscious tool. It’s often best to keep your ego shadowed, so the work at hand can manifest into completion without its interference.
Others answered my call. And so it began.
The volunteers set to work, while I kept the count in command voice. 911 listened to that count over the speaker phone, and told us we were right on tempo. Another volunteer was giving mouth to mouth.
“I thought they didn’t train to do that anymore,” said one member.
“Yeah, well, that’s for strangers on the street. Not for neighbors.” And back he went to his work.
Our patient was fogging my glasses when we stopped, which was a good sign. Facial color still good. But I still wasn’t getting much of a pulse. Check that; I wasn’t really getting any.
Damn. Damn. Damn.
The Meeting from Hell wasn’t going to let go of us just yet.
Nothing to do now but endure. Keep the count, call encouragement. I keep reading about “unconscious” people who could hear what was going on around them. And this one was a guy who would tell The Reaper himself to get off his lawn. I may have reminded him once or twice.
But mostly, I reminded him in between counts that his neighbors and friends were here, and we weren’t going to let go or quit.
An ex-Marine stepped in, pushed me aside to listen when we paused, and gave a few quick directions. Still getting air movement. Still not getting a pulse.
I cannot remember who suggested that we just ditch the pauses and keep going until the medics came – but then, my memory gets a bit fuzzy. Suffice to say that it happened. The CPR Crew organized shifts, because it’s a damn tiring thing to do at a sixty-per-minute pace. It was going to take the paramedics a little while.
His wife remained in the room with us. Other people had stayed, but moved to another part of the building. Most had simply left, not wishing to be in the way.
The minutes ticked down.
Eventually, the paramedics did arrive. They gave him several defibrillator shocks, inserted an IV, put oxygen on him, and continued CPR. I watched closely, and noticed something interesting: their positioning was a bit different than ours had been, a bit higher. I copied their hand configuration and burned the body positioning, timing, etc. into my memory.
As I did this, it occurred to me that the four people who stepped forward may not have been any more current than I was (or they might, I have no idea).
They were just willing to do it.
Hmmm.
When the medics asked us to clear the room, I did. Inside, my conviction was growing that we had failed. As I talked to the people who remained, my perspective grew a bit.
Several mentioned hearing my voice as a comfort. One the one hand, great. On the other hand, I hadn’t even considered that angle. Failure to act with a plan.
“If anything ever happens to me, I want you guys there” was heard more than once. I still hear that one on occasion.
Someone pointed out that if our neighbor has stayed home, he’d just be dead with no chance of recovery. Good point.
The medics finally deemed our neighbor fit to move and took him to the hospital, where he was admitted to surgery. I went home.
We had given our neighbor a chance; indeed, the paramedics said it was one of the best responses they had seen. Apparently, they walk into quite a few scenes of “people standing around watching the blue guy” rather than taking action and playing their roles. In contrast, our neighbor had 97% blood oxygen levels after roughly twenty minutes of CPR.
But inside, I knew I had been less than fully prepared, and had not taken full control of the situation. One the one hand, I hadn’t needed to. No one had needed to, and no one did. But an honest look in the mirror said that if more had been required, I would have done okay but dropped some balls.
I’ve worked on fixing that since.
And the rrrrest of the story? How did our neighbor do? How does it end?
Well, he dies at the end.
This is the dark world.
You can do most things right, and still lose. You can do everything right, and still lose.
The universe is impersonal. Really, really impersonal.
So, he dies, then. As we all do.
Yes. And no.
He dies after a good life that included community recognition within the very meeting that constituted his last minutes on earth. He goes down surrounded by men who would not leave their brother behind, and who did everything in their power to snatch him from the Reaper’s jaws.
I should be so lucky. Except that it’s not really luck. Is it?
The Reaper’s lessons, part two.
1. Relevant items from Ivan’s 100 Dark World Lessons: #18, 21, 54, 64, 70, 83, 84.
2. Resolve to never be caught “watching the blue guy,” in all of its meanings. The “men do not leave their brothers behind” bit that Ivan bangs on about? Not just words. My old friend David Blue’s amazing article: Achilles’ Last Stand: the Primal Heroic Response is a must read, with some surprising and practical tips.
3. The people around you may not be any more prepared than you are. It may just be a matter of who is willing.
a) Think about this, and think of a couple potential stress/crisis situations.
b) Now imagine yourself as willing and stepping forward to act. Play it out a bit in your head, and realize that this is a form of investment in your future self. Next time you’re confronted by a stress situation and feel nervous, you’ll be much more likely to remember this imaginary scene. And the positive emotions that came with it will give you extra strength to break through fear or hesitation.
4. The people around the situation are part of the situation. I let tunnel vision get me, and lucked into addressing their needs. A real plan would factor those needs in up front, and pay closer attention to them during the event.
a) Go back to an imaginary situation from Part I, 2(a). Pick one that corresponds to the skill you intend to practice. Think about who may be around that situation, and how that might change your plans. What does the new plan look like? Do you feel like you’re better able to cope now?
5. You don’t have to be the guy telling everyone what to do. You do have to be the guy with a clear idea of what should be done, and the presence to make it so if it isn’t happening. Understand the distinction, and how that changes your behavior.
6. If you can’t do that then take a lesser role, do it as best you can, and accept it. Then decide whether you want to perform better next time, and take action if so.
a) Pick a situation from your recent past that didn’t go as well as you had hoped, and could realistically have gone better. Decide what you’d need to know and to do in order to change it. Use that as fuel to take at least one step toward a “better next time” outcome.
