2016 & Beyond
It’s been a rather testing year. At the beginning, the troubles I’ve had with my neck for nearly 20 years abruptly escalated to the point where I couldn’t write. Physiotherapy and an MRI later and it seems like the problem is both a worsening of muscular issues along with the new complication of a slightly compressed disc and nerve.
Writing is the main culprit. It’s easy to tell it is. I can still paint and draw, if I stand up. I can dig in the garden. But if I sit or extend both of my arms for more than an hour even the strongest over-the-counter pain killers can’t cut the pain. Sitting and extending is worse.
(I should add: I’ve tried dictation software before, and it doesn’t work with the way I write. Please don’t sent me emails suggesting it.)
Keeping away from the computer for all but an hour a day for eight months has helped. So has reducing tweeting to a minimum – mostly just reading and replying to notifications. But it hasn’t cured me, and it’s likely this is a long-term problem that will only go away completely if I never write again.
That’s no fun.
I figure that, since I managed to write the last half of Successor’s Promise in an hour a day over about seven months, then polishing over another month, producing books is still possible. They’ll happen a lot slower, but that does give me more planning and plotting time. But before I launch into the next book, I’m having a rest for a few months (if you call physio, pilates and other exercise-related treatment a ‘rest’) to see if that helps as well.
I hope you’ll find it worth the wait.

Fan Festival
To celebrate the paperback release of Angel of Storms, Orbit is running a fan festival that is all about creativity.
It’s an opportunity for artists and makers to demonstrate their unique skills and show how my books have inspired them. Whether you have painted Sonea’s portrait, made a soft toy veez or a Beetle pendant, we want to see it. If you haven’t seen your particular creative specialty on the list, just enquire to see if it can be included.*
The details and lists of prizes are here.
* Unfortunately I had to rule out fanfiction for this competition, as I’m going to be choosing the final winners and I don’t want to be influenced when I come to write future books. Also, I have an idea for a fanfiction project that I might do a few years down the track.

Fantasy Festival in Denmark
I’m excited to announce that I will be appearing at the Fantasy Festival in Esbjerg, Denmark, later this year.
The festival will be held at Esbjerg Conference Hotel, Stormgade 200, 6700 Esbjerg on the 17th and 18th of September 2016. It celebrates fantasy literature, movies, board games, figure and role playing. I’m looking forward to meeting Danish fantasy authors, shopping at the marketplace and, most of all, talking to my Danish fans.
For more information go to the website or visit the Facebook page.
(To head off the questions… no, I’m not going to be appearing anywhere else on this trip. It’s just a short one. I’m hoping to be back in Europe next year, though nothing official has been arranged yet.)

Book Launch & Signing
I’m very excited to announce that I will be appearing at two back-to-back events to celebrate the release of Angel of Storms. First, at 6:30 pm on the 13th of November, is the official launch at Dymocks Collins Street in Melbourne. Book your place here.
BUT THAT’S NOT ALL! The next day, at noon, I’ll be heading out to Dymocks Knox City for a signing event. (You don’t need to book for this one, but there won’t be all the bells and whistles – well, snacks and speeches – of a launch.)
I’ll be bringing quote bookmarks to both and will have my pen primed and ready.
