Limitless Leaders™ Connection Actually, there are 12 Superpowers of a Limitless Leader – What’s yours?

We are all working in a time of uncertainty and transition as a hybrid working environment becomes part of our new world.

Leading hybrid teams and juggling a million balls, including strategy, systems, people, skills, innovation, and so much more, can stifle our energy, mindset and performance. We need to adjust, adapt and look at the things that can amplify how we connect, communicate and work.

Renee Giarrusso - Limitless Leaders - Acceleration ProgramIt’s no wonder many leaders are only managing their teams instead of leading them and their organisations forward. To shift from a management mindset to a leadership mindset takes awareness, skill, will, energy, and more than just drive, ambition, and some smarts. It all starts with self-leadership and filling this cup before you can share. We need to learn, unlearn and learn again, and adopt the mindset, skills and habits we need to evolve and develop and look at what is next continually.

Life Skills (a.k.a Soft skills) are imperative to master and form the foundation of success in any role. There are many traits, mindsets, perspectives and habits we need to adopt, and we have identified these as THE 12 SUPERPOWERS to Lead and Be Limitless.

SUPERPOWER – an exceptional or extraordinary power or ability.

Your Superpower is literally your special sauce. It’s something unique to you. It may be a skill or trait that others may possess, but it’s unique to you as there is no one else who is you.

Superpowers can help us sprint instead of run, walk instead of crawl and can help us be the leaders we want to become and, in the process, create future leaders.

If you’re a leader looking to invest in yourself to serve others and your organisation better, please see my thinking captured in this leadership whitepaper.

In this article, I explore the 12 Superpowers to lead and be limitless and compare the difference in behaviour that could LIMIT you or make you LIMITLESS.

Superpowers of a Limitless leader:

As always, I’d love to hear what stands out for you.

Limitless Leaders™ Connection – Workplace Energy Depletion is a Reality. The 8 Reasons Why!

Living life as our full, energetic selves is vital for us to function at our highest level, both physically and mentally. When we feel energised, we feel motivated on a physical, mental and emotional level. It is up to us to be aware of when and how we replenish our energy.

Life can be stressful and full of chaos – like catching spinning plates. From family, friends, work, technology and new ideas to our physical and mental health, we face conflicting priorities daily. Working long hours, lack of quality sleep and food; a manic mind and stress can zap our energy. Like a battery, we cannot be charged unless we fill our reserves.

When our energy is depleted, we are no good to anyone. We ignore how low energy can lead to adverse outcomes such as depression, illness and lack of social contact. We cannot be our whole selves if we don’t take the time to re-energise.

When someone is energised, you can feel their energy. When a work team is energised, members feel they can achieve almost anything. As a leader, if you see a gap in your team's energy, you need to open the door to explore this as a team and see what is going on. Energy, or lack thereof, can be due to something deeper, so this needs to be delved into.

These days, people work more hours, balancing remote work and feeling stressed out, exhausted and overwhelmed – ‘burnt out’. The World Health Organization recently deemed burnout as a classifiable workplace phenomenon.

Workplace energy depletion is a reality

Many factors lead to energy depletion and burnout. Some causes bridge home and the workplace, while other pressures are work-specific. The Mayo Clinic researched stress and burnout at work and has shown common workplace factors contributing to it. I have listed a few below, in conjunction with my experiences working in organisations over the last 15 years.

Here are the main contributing factors I have observed:

Unclear role expectations and purpose:

This can lead to a lack of direction, where you question your own and your manager’s expectations of you. An unclear purpose leads to an unclear strategy and unknown authority in your role, confusing and demotivating.

Work-life imbalance:

Channelling most of your focus and energy into the workplace results in a lack of energy to spend quality time on other things that matter – family, friends or passions and self-growth.

Lack of control or resources:

An inability to influence decisions that affect your job – such as your schedule, assignments or workload – could lead to job burnout.
So could a lack of the resources you need to do your work.

Lack of social support:

A strong support network is vital. Feeling isolated at work or in your personal life might lead to feeling more stressed. Strong working relationships are key to building resilience, self-confidence and energy.

.fusion-body .fusion-builder-nested-column-0{width:50% !important;margin-top : 0px;margin-bottom : 20px;}.fusion-builder-nested-column-0 > .fusion-column-wrapper {padding-top : 0px !important;padding-right : 0px !important;margin-right : 3.84%;padding-bottom : 0px !important;padding-left : 0px !important;margin-left : 3.84%;}@media only screen and (max-width:1024px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-nested-column-0{width:50% !important;order : 0;}.fusion-builder-nested-column-0 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 3.84%;margin-left : 3.84%;}}@media only screen and (max-width:640px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-nested-column-0{width:100% !important;order : 0;}.fusion-builder-nested-column-0 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}}

Dysfunctional workplace dynamics:

Lack of purpose, morale or collaboration can be stressful and energy-draining. Unclear expectations of the team and organisation are confusing, and dealing with team members who may be bullies or micromanagers.

Job function overload:

Getting fewer people to do more not only creates an issue in the capacity to do a good job but can also create gaps in capability. This leaves us feeling inadequate and unmotivated, especially if there is no upskilling or support.

Extremes of activity:

When a job is monotonous or chaotic, the constant energy required to remain focused may lead to fatigue, lack of energy and job burnout.

Re-energising as a leader:

As a leader, you need to exude the kind of energy you want to see in others. When I led corporate teams and now, as a leader in my business, staying true to my purpose has been key to keeping my energy and others' inflow.

.fusion-body .fusion-builder-nested-column-1{width:50% !important;margin-top : 0px;margin-bottom : 20px;}.fusion-builder-nested-column-1 > .fusion-column-wrapper {padding-top : 0px !important;padding-right : 0px !important;margin-right : 3.84%;padding-bottom : 0px !important;padding-left : 0px !important;margin-left : 3.84%;}@media only screen and (max-width:1024px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-nested-column-1{width:50% !important;order : 0;}.fusion-builder-nested-column-1 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 3.84%;margin-left : 3.84%;}}@media only screen and (max-width:640px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-nested-column-1{width:100% !important;order : 0;}.fusion-builder-nested-column-1 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}}Rest and self-care are so importantWhen you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel. — Eleanor Brownn

Whether you’re in a leadership role or not, you are responsible for leading yourself. Think about what energises you and start there. Be open about any concerns you have with your peers, manager or co-workers in other areas of the business. Get clear on your purpose and your expectations of yourself and others.

Here are four questions to ask:

What is the expectation of my role? Be specific and get clear on this. What do I expect from my team? What does the team expect of me?What is the expectation and purpose of the organisation?

If you need to re-energise, get support from those around you – whether in or outside the workplace. We all need a strong support network; remember, connection, is an innate human need. Reach out to co-workers, loved ones, external mentors and friends.

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Limitless Leaders™ Connection – 2021 – The time to adopt a Gift Mindset®

As we head into 2021, the time to adopt a Gift Mindset® is a message I’m passionate about sharing. It is a key trait of any Limitless Leader™ and any organisation.

This mindset is built on having deep awareness and acceptance of the lessons gleaned through either achieving success or facing a challenge and actioning these lessons by sharing them. These lessons or gifts could be a survival guide to someone else and can be a powerful way to contribute to the world and create a workplace culture of openness, connection and contribution.

2021-The time to adopt a Gift Mindset® Model

I have embraced the Gift Mindset® for many years, and as I shared the concept with others, they found that adopting this powerful mindset helped them embrace challenges and successes, both in and out of the workplace.

2021 is the time to adopt a Gift Mindset®, and I am so passionate about the difference this mindset can make that I decided to share this in my 3rd book “Gift Mindset®”- Unwrap the 12 Gifts to lead and live a life of purpose, connection and contribution.

Failing to share your successes and challenges is selfish

Many people feel it’s not their place to share their lessons, for whatever reason.

Sharing a small or large success or challenge you have overcome can start by looking at where you have come from and the lessons (gifts) that have enabled you. The most effective leaders and organisations are the ones who overcome adversity by planting positive seeds, feed them with optimistic energy and then watch the success from this grow and flow on.

In a recent discussion with clients, many shared that they felt self-indulgent, especially when sharing successes. They said they felt as if they were gloating and that their team would see them as egotistical. You may agree but remember this is only the frame that you are giving it. Your belief in this is larger than the desire to share and replicate success. Your ‘why to change this belief’ needs to be bigger than your ‘why to stay the same’. If you can relate to this, take the time to flip your belief and focus on what the benefits of sharing your successes could bring.

Your darkest moments can be your defining ones

Sometimes people feel inadequate sharing challenges they have faced or mistakes they have made. Why? They feel judged and anxious about the response they will receive, fearing rejection – they are coming from a place of fear instead of a place of love. We share more with those we have trust, respect and rapport with on a personal level, and this can be mirrored in the workplace if we foster these traits.

We need to embrace our challenges and welcome sharing these; these are all parts of adopting a Gift Mindset®.

All challenges are vital to our personal development. The more we test our capabilities and limits, the more we will learn about ourselves. If we focus on what it would be like to fail and revert to our comfort zone, there will be no growth.

There are 12 key Gifts we can adopt as part of living a Gift Mindset®, and these are all traits and skills necessary to create and build upon in any role. These gifts are accessible to all of us; we need to untie the bow and unwrap what is hidden inside.

Renee Giarrusso - MMFT

In 2021 I encourage organisations to embed:

Motivation Monday’ – sharing what lights you up
Win Wednesday’ – sharing successes
Failure Friday’ – sharing challenges and discussing the lessons learnt.

This creates a sense of fun and theatre, and a safe space to be open and own your experiences as a team.

One way to motivate others and make sharing successes and challenges a part of your culture is to explore positive: negative ratios. Psychologist John Gottman researched this and found the 5:1 ratio to be the magic ratio, where five positive mentions or moments are shared for every negative one. A study has shown that teams with a positive: negative ratio greater than 3:1 were significantly more motivated.

The key is to keep the sharing truthful and honest. This encourages positive emotion and can have a healthy ripple effect across the organisation.

As we rapidly move into the new year, we are excited to share The Gift Mindset® Culture program and our Gift Mindset® keynotes. If you are looking to embed a culture of purpose, connection and contribution and give your team and organisation this gift, please reach out to find out more. 2021 is the time to adopt a Gift Mindset®.

Are you ready to create a Gift Mindset® Culture?

Are you ready to create a Gift Mindset® Culture?

Workplace culture is made up of shared values, beliefs and social behaviours, and so often these can be hidden, stifled or not lived within the organisation. The lessons we learn need to be shared to empower others, create openness and trust and in the process, become a survival guide for others, including that for future leaders.

Gifts can come in many forms; we need to be open to seeing them. These lessons can come from people and situations and can be from the past, the present or the future. By adopting the Gift Mindset® we get to live our legacy now by leading a culture of purpose, connection and contribution.

Challenging situations and people can be seen as ‘gifts’ that are just as valuable as the amazing positive situations and people we encounter in life. To embrace them, we need to raise our awareness, accept them as gifts and apply the lessons they present both as a limitless leader and in our own life.

We need, in other words, to adopt and foster what I call a Gift Mindset. This mindset is a key trait of a Limitless leader.

Why do we need to create a Gift Mindset® Culture?

If we choose not to learn from and share our lessons or close ourselves off from receiving lessons from others, we risk robbing the workplace of our insights or, worse, contributing mindlessly to a world already heavy with distraction and clutter.

Never before have we lived in such a connected world, but at the same time, been so disconnected.

Right now, many organisations are facing these challenges:Dealing with change, adversity and new ways of thinking and workingLeaders are juggling a multitude of responsibilities and get caught up in the “doing” and not in the “being”Lack of reflection time results in low self-reflection, connection and collaborationPeople feel time-poor, and often skill stretched leading to disengagement, disconnection and low motivationA lack of time and focus on sharing the lessons gleaned through individual and team challenges and successesProcess, progress and performance is a key focus, and the “people” piece is being missedHigh technical focus leading to a lack of development of soft “life” skills such as; resilience, gratitude, courage, connection, empathy and curiosityLow trust within teams with many working remotely and feeling disconnectedToo busy to challenge the status quo resulting in a focus on “maintenance” type activities and conversations vs. progressiveA culture that has or is becoming transactional and performance-basedA limited inward focus that can result in a lack of adaptability, innovation and learningA Gift Mindset® Culture can:Provide the forum and tools to embrace challenges and successes as an opportunity to share and learn from each otherReinforce learnings ongoing and make this part of the culture moving forwardPrevent lessons learnt from challenges and successes being swept under the rugBuild a rhythm and cadence of accountability to share experiences and lessons gleanedEmbed the habit of sharing experiences that are positive or negative to serve and contribute to the wider teamProvide insights and tools to build the 12 key Gifts which are soft skills necessary for success, performance and growth in any role and lifeIncrease communication and promote open dialogueCreate an intentional space of openness, learning, trust and appreciation of diversityFoster the sharing of successes to enable best practice across the organisation and break down the silosIncrease vulnerability, connection and collaborationFast track performance as learnings can be shared and implemented in real-time, not down the trackBuild respect and appreciation for what others have experienced Sharing your ‘gifts’ that could be a survival guide for someone else

Creating a culture where we adopt the Gift Mindset can take leadership, connection and collaboration to the next level. By sharing the experiences and lessons we encounter, both challenging and positive, we can empower others and create a culture of honesty and openness and live our legacy.

Limitless Leaders™ Connection – How are you building your resilience muscle?

Resilience is a key trait within us all. It’s a trait we need to embrace and build upon. This year, in particular, has provided us with more than its fair share of opportunity for us to grow in the area of resilience both in our personal and professional lives.

Shifting my entire business to online, having clients postpone work, supporting my sister through her chemotherapy and writing my new book over 14 weekends has definitely shown me, first-hand, that a high level of resilience is what has got me through. I have used it as a driver to focus on what I can do to influence and tap into past experiences and thinking that has worked previously. Like many of us, including many clients, we have all had to step up this year and grow in so many ways.

Resilience is the strength of spirit to recover from adversity. It enables us to find hope and the courage to continue, even when faced with challenging or negative circumstances. CLICK TO TWEET

In a nutshell, resilience is the strength of spirit to recover from adversity. It enables us to find hope and the courage to continue, even when faced with challenging or negative circumstances. Resilience is a collection of skills, mindsets, and traits built upon as we face new and ever-changing experiences in and out of the workplace.

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” – Maya Angelou

Research by leading US psychologist Susan Kobasas resulted in finding three elements essential to resilience:

Challenge rather than crisis – resilient people look at mistakes and failures as lessons. They tend to reframe a paralysing event as a challenge. This, in itself, can change your mindset to be even more resilient.Commitment to goals – resilient people are committed to work, relationships, friendships, beliefs, and things they care about. Being committed will give you a compelling reason to get out of bed in the morning.Personal control – resilient people focus their energy and time, putting their efforts where they can have the most impact and feeling empowered and confident. Focusing on what we can influence allows us to stop worrying about events that are out of our control, making us feel lost and powerless.

These three elements are a great reference point to see where and how you can dial this up for you.

Running numerous leadership and communication programs on this topic, I really believe if we look into what a situation can teach us, we are open to the lessons we can bring into our leadership and the future leaders we are creating.

Many elements can help us ramp up our resilience, and I’ve captured a few below:

Supportive relationshipsStrong and supportive relationships are vital, and people with strong connections are known to be more resilient to stress and often happier. As human beings, we are innately wired to connect, ensure your connections serve you, as you do them.We all need a strong support network to fall back on.Foster an attitude of gratitude and optimismAssessing and sustaining positive emotions is a key skill in building resilience.Gratitude has the power to energise, heal and bring hope when facing adversity.Helps us look at life in its entirety and not be overwhelmed by negative circumstances whilst assisting in building a psychological immune system and other health benefits.Review to remindLooking backwards is about learning and looking forward is about progress.Focusing your attention on how far you have come as this provides positive reinforcement.Looking ahead can fuel thoughts to overcome challenges.Reframe the scriptRumination is a process of relieving an event over and over again, up until a point.Reframing the experience can help you move forward and layer onto the “resilience muscle.”Change your language to serve you, thoughts carry power and flow onto our feelings and actions.Know what motivates youMotivation is the energy that fuels optimism and positivity, and It can account for 65% of the predictability of success in any role.Doing what you are good at and enjoy can light you up and keep you going in challenging times.Tap into situations and people that motivate you and the tasks that light you up at work and the passions you have.Confront what scares youThe more we avoid, the more we fear and “awfulize” what we are fearing.Anything outside our “safe zone” is growth.Facing our fears builds upon our resilience so slowly expose yourself to things repeatedly.

I’d love to hear how you have been building upon your resilience?

Limitless Leaders™ Connection – Boundaries – What do and don’t you stand for?

So here we are, we've headed into another new year. We've left 2020 behind us. It's time to take what we have learnt and create some space to set boundaries and ensure we get the most out of 2021!

What are you choosing?

How exciting that we have the choice to make this year whatever we want it to be. Many things are not in our control, but the good news is we all have the choice to choose and influence how this year looks both personally and professionally. Like writing a new chapter in a book, you choose the settings, the themes and the characters. The choices are all yours.

Hopefully, you have had some time to recharge and reset for the year ahead, or maybe that's what you are doing as you read this. It’s amazing what even a quick break can do, to reflect on what was, and contemplating what will be.

Boundaries

We need to set boundaries and know what we stand for and what we don’t. Brené Brown says “Boundaries are simply what’s ok and what’s not ok”. Nothing complicated but we often make it so.

Boundaries are like the speed humps in the road; without them, we can lose control and end up anywhere.

To have 20/20 vision, a term most commonly used to express normal visual acuity measured at a distance of 20 feet, means you can see clearly at 20 feet, what should normally be seen at that distance.

Not setting boundaries and adhering to them can set us off course, cause unnecessary pain, distort our path, and influence others, especially if you are leading, to follow suit. Having boundaries both personally and professionally helps you bring your whole self to whatever you do, clearly paves the way for success, helps you measure where things are and keeps things real and relevant.

Take the time to:Set boundaries and know your limits and what you do and don’t stand for.Build self-awareness of these boundaries.Consider what has worked and what hasn't in both past and present.Measure them ongoing.Get support to live by these.Friends, work colleagues, and family.Clearly communicate what these are.Let people know. Are your boundaries blurred?

For me, one boundary that has become blurred, especially in 2020 was that of work-life balance or what I call work-life blend (more integrated and achievable). Working remotely 24/7 on my business and writing a book left very little time for play, which is something important to me. This is an area many of our clients find challenging, and this is usually due to not setting clear guidelines of what you will and won’t accept. I have set a boundary that I won’t (unless absolutely necessary) do work travel on a Sunday night and 6 am morning flights anymore. This will ensure I get my weekends. By anticipating work travel from midday on a Sunday and by flying at night instead of early morning, my energy is up, and I’m more prepared to be in service to my clients the next day.

According to Gallup's State of the American Workplace 2017, 53% of employees said that a role that allows them to have greater work-life balance is “very important” to them. Workplace boundaries help you achieve and safeguard balance in their area. This is a great example of a need to set boundaries both in and out of work as one supports the other.

Boundaries come in many forms, and I’ve outlined 3 of the more obvious ones:PhysicalThis is all about your personal space and touch considerations. The rules you apply to physical boundaries will define this for you and could include things such as handshakes vs hugs at work, where your desk is located and how and what you set up as your surroundings.MentalYour thoughts, opinions and values are what will determine your mental boundaries.Setting boundaries around your routine and how certain things may operate at work is an example of this. Be clear and adhere to the rules you set and avoid (when applicable) others ideas on influencing or changing this.EmotionalThis is all about getting in touch with your feelings and emotions, and setting boundaries around these can help you see the differences between those you have that are different from those around you at work.Knowing who and when to say yes or no to when it comes to tasks, can help ensure you don’t allow others’ feelings and attitudes towards things influence your own attitudes and motivations.

Take the time as we head into the new year to reset your boundaries, let go of the ones that no longer serve you and create new rules of what you do and don’t accept.

What do you need to:Ignite?Extinguish?Maintain?

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Lead to be limitless this year!

Limitless Leaders™ Connection – GIFT MINDSET® The perfect team gift for 2021

As we reflect on this time last year, a lot has changed for all of us.

Overall, people have grown in more ways than one, through different experiences and situations. From facing challenges and new ways of working and thinking to achieve success in or out of work, everyone has learnt something and has a story to tell.

Challenges teach us what is possible, and successes get us to go that one step further. CLICK TO TWEET

It’s the lessons from these experiences that can make a difference in our lives and others. As I call them, these lessons or gifts can come in many forms; we have to be open to seeing them. They come from people and situations and can be from the past, the present or the future. By adopting the Gift Mindset®, we get to live our legacy now by sharing these lessons and create a workplace culture of purpose, connection and contribution.

To embrace these gifts, we need to raise our awareness, accept these lessons and apply the gifts they present both in and out of the workplace.

We need, in other words, to adopt and foster a Gift Mindset®.

Our gifts can fall into 12 key categories “The 12 Gifts”, that are the soft skills we need to deepen and build upon in any role. Too often hard skills (technical) become the focus and now more than ever, we need to unwrap and reveal the 12 Gifts.

I am so passionate about this message that I have written a book on it, “Gift Mindset® Unwrap the 12 gifts to lead and live a life of purpose, connection and contribution.” This is being published and shared with the world late February!

This book is for you…if you want to embrace challenges and successes and unwrap and share the gifts withinif you want to create a team and workplace culture of openness, connection and collaborationif you are caught up in the “doing” of life and need to reflect on the “gifts that have got you to where you are nowif you would like to build on key life skills and explore the 12 key gifts to incorporate these into your life and leadershipif you are ready to deepen your self-awareness and acceptance of life’s lessons and share these to contribute to othersif you are ready to break down the barriers, you may face, and reap the benefits

If you are looking for a great way to ramp up the gift of connection, growth and gratitude within your workplace, then give your team the gift of the Gift Mindset® to kick start 2021.

In this thought-provoking book, I teach you how to adopt the Gift Mindset to learn from these experiences and appreciate them as gifts. Many workplace cultures are transactional, and performance-focused, adopting a Gift Mindset® culture promotes openness, connection and collaboration.

The stories, interviews, insights and practical tools can be easily applied to take your life, leadership and organisation to the next level.

Are you ready to unwrap your gifts?
