Robert Chalmers, 1st Baron Chalmers, GCB, was a British civil servant, member of the Pali Text Society, and scholar of Buddhism. He held the post of Governor of Ceylon, 1913–15, and was admitted to the Privy Council of Ireland prior to his elevation to the peerage. Leaving no male heirs as his two sons were killed in the first world war, his baronage became extinct at his death.
He studies the Pali language under T.W. Rhys Davids, and went on to translate more than 2,000 Buddhist texts over 40 years.
