Expositional Preaching
Once upon a time, I helped to organize Simeon Trust preaching workshops in Toronto. I don’t know any other workshop like them. Somebody’s compared them to spring training for preachers. You’re reminded of good preaching principles. You hear model sermons. You also get to practice your exegetical skills in small groups.
The problem with the workshops is that they’re not available everywhere. You can, however, benefit from the teaching of Simeon Trust’s founder by reading his helpful book Expos...

What I Wasn’t Ready for in Pastoral Ministry
Young pastors today are often cool, impressive, and popular. But the pastoral ministry that has borne eternal fruit down through the centuries has been something deeper, grander and more resilient.

The Essence of Pastoral Ministry
If forced to summarize the essence of pastoral ministry into one word, I’d go with delight. That’s a far different answer than I would have given in my younger years.
Pastoral ministry is about delight. Specifically, it’s about delight in God, Scripture, and his church.
Delight in GodOur first and primary task — or maybe privilege — is to delight in God. It’s our first and primary responsibility. Without this, the rest of pastoral ministry falls short.
Pastors lead best when they can say:

Pursuing a First-Class Marriage
When a friend writes a book, I get a bit nervous, especially when the friend asks me to provide feedback on said book. (Apologies to all my friends who will soon be experiencing this with my book.)
[image error]I was a little nervous, therefore, to read my friend Mike Thiessen’s book Pursuing a First-Class Marriage: Finding the One Without Trying Many. I shouldn’t have worried. I’ll be recommending this book regularly to my single friends.
Thiessen wrote this book for young adults who are just beginning t...

Quick Updates
There have been some changes I want to tell you about. Here are some quick updates.
Website RedesignFirst off, DashHouse.com has been redesigned. I’m grateful to Jermaine Wall of Cabinet Creative for his work. I think he’s done a great job.
Please take a look around the website and let me know if you find anything that doesn’t work well. I’m still going to make some changes, like making it easier to find sermons by text. But I like what Jermaine has done.
By the way, if you haven’t already d...

Pain Drove Me to It
I’m an achiever. I wake up every day thinking about the things I need to accomplish for the day to be productive.
A few years ago, crisis interrupted. Because of the pain, I changed my routine. Instead of rushing off to exercise or work after breakfast, Charlene and I would sit together on the couch and drink coffee for as long as it took. I had no choice. Suffering pushed us together.
It was hard for me not to rush off. I love my wife, and I enjoy spending time with her. But I felt the weigh...
