My Top 5 Fun and Funniest LA Moments

When I moved to LA, someone told me not to say I was from Ohio.
I’m still trying to figure out why.
I can say LA is very different from other places I’ve lived. I moved to LA during the pandemic, and even after four years, I’m still trying to figure it out.
For example: LA is the only place where you do the “friendly wave” to cross the street AND people wave back, thinking they are friendly, too. But THEN they speed right past you, not in a friendly way, leave you still waiting to cross the street.
The “friendly wave” usually means “thank you for letting me go” and the car stops, letting pedestrians cross the street.
Why this matters is I walk everywhere in LA. I love that I can walk most places because of the weather. I also love the food, shopping, and access to entertainment. Here’s a list of my top 5 fun and funniest LA moments:
Wheel of Fortune: A true source of happiness in LA for me has been being an audience member for the Wheel of Fortune. I even shook Ryan Seacrest’s hand. It’s better than a Broadway show!Shopping: LA, to me, has the best shopping. From vintage valuables to discounted duds, the buffet of options never ends. What follows is the link to a true story about shopping at Goodwill. And, maybe it has happened to you, too?How I Almost Bought What I Donated…
3. Plastic Surgery Party: This is a major LA milestone. I got invited to a plastic surgery party! I’m still trying to figure out if it’s a compliment or an insult. I do know I can’t afford any of that. That’s why there’s filters and photoshop, but I don’t know how to do those either.
4. Roaches: The first friends I had in LA came out in full force. The roaches taught me resilience and strength. The story below is fictional account of the day the exterminator came.
5. German Reality Show: My first job in LA was being an extra on a German Reality show. I got it off Craigslist. In short, I went to a house in Culver City, I sat in a studio audience, and I clapped. I got paid with a snack-sized bag of chips.
LA is a fun city. There’s always something to discover about the city and yourself. Get out there!
If you laughed out loud or in your head, please let me know by clapping 👏.Thank you for reading![image error]February 9, 2025

2024 Recap from L.B. Lewis

Hi and happy holidays! Thanks for discovering my writing on Medium.
I’ve been publishing on Medium since 2017, everything from bizarre tech stories to wine reviews. I started to publish here to build my platform and experiment with new content.
I’m the author four books and use Medium primarily as my blog and portfolio. I’m also here to discover new writers and interesting topics.
As far as the platform goes, I am a Verified Book Author and member of the Medium Partner Program. If my stories are paywalled, I will earn a small amount of money when people read them. If my stories are free to read, I do not earn anything.
It was my 2024 goal to publish once a month and mostly light-hearted, comedic pieces. I’m happy to announce that I’ve published 15 times this year!
From Paris to Greek Festivals to Free Stand-Up Comedy, 2024 was a fun year. I appreciate everyone who has read, clapped and commented on my stories this year.
It’s interesting to share with you below which stories were the most popular and that you enjoyed the most. I have to say I am surprised!

20 Ways for Festive Fun Under a Buck

This may be the longest Christmas season in the history of capitalism.
In case you missed it, Halloween now starts in July and Christmas begins in September. Black Friday should be rebranded as Black November because gone are the days when it was one day, leaving us wondering when Easter will be on sale!
Don’t get me wrong, while I like a good sale, I have gotten to be more of a minimalist than a maximalist over the years. The truth is I’ve always been a bit frugal. I believe it’s truly is the thought that counts..and that thought is: What’s fun you can do for FREE?
So, fire up your imagination and forget about all the dollars and cents. Try these 20 ways by yourself or with family and friends to have light-hearted, holiday fun on a budget:
· Go outside. Fresh air is good. You might see a reindeer or a dog dressed up like one.
· Dance like someone IS watching you because you deserve all the attention you can get, and you might get a job out of it if you’re good.
· Turn your phone off. See how that goes.
· Take a nap but call it a siesta. And start working on your Spanish.
· Donate shoes, clothes, food, and books you have, and don’t take out anyone else’s donations when you drop yours off.
· Say “hi” to your neighbor. It’s OK if they don’t say “hi” back.
· Search for your 2025 horoscope online and start making a list of all the good things you want to happen next year.
· Sing a Christmas carol, if only in the car or in the shower!
· Call a good friend and say “I just called to say I love you” then let this friend know Stevie Wonder will be 75 in 2025.
· Register for as many sweepstakes as you can online to see if lady luck will soon come your way.
· Find free calendars whether online or IRL and save your dollars for what truly matters.
· Visit the library. Check out a book and get your taxes worth.
· Write and mail a letter or card to someone. Just don’t forget a stamp is $.73.
· Stop and smell the flowers — grocery store, floral section, anyone?
· Listen to someone, without earbuds in.
· Handwrite a positive note to yourself about 2024. It’s OK to include things that didn’t happen…yet.
· Drive around without using your GPS and see where you’ll go.
· Read a book. Remember how?
· Sign up to volunteer and expand your horizons.
· Tell yourself a joke. If you laugh, tell someone your joke! If you don’t laugh, keep at it until you do laugh at your own jokes — you have to start somewhere.

The United States of Pumpkin Spice

Happy Pumpkin Spice Season, formerly known as fall.
It’s so hard to stay on top of everything these days.
But, one thing is for certain: Pumpkin Spice Season keeps getting longer and… better!
You see, the United States was founded partly on the demand for spice.
The spice trade was one of the factors that led to Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the New World.

Without old spice, we couldn’t enjoy new spice.
As for Pumpkin Pie Spice, it became famous in the 1930s and has been uniting America every fall since — no matter your political views.
From east to west, north to south,
whether there’s a heat wave or a cold front,
it’s an American tradition,
just like “where there is a will there’s a way.”
After all, American ends in “I can.”
And, yes, we can add Pumpkin Spice to everything and we do.
It’s not just for Pumpkin Spice Lattes (PSL) anymore.
Pumpkin Spice is around an $800 million industry.
From pet food to pie, Pumpkin Spice reminds us of our roots.
Sure, it’s a seasonal, money-making opportunity, just like everything these days.
Some people don’t like that and, or spice. I get it.
But we can’t deny Pumpkin Spice is an American tradition.
Truly, I wouldn’t mind having Pumpkin Spice all year round.
So let’s raise our PSLs today to the United States of Pumpkin Spice!

In the Group Chat

“Remind me to tell you the story when I put something very unfortunate in the group chat,” said our teacher as he attempted to disable his camera on Zoom.
He fiddled with some buttons then we all saw his Superman boxers when he stood up.
He went on to mutter something about “gotta get ready” and abruptly turned from his phone to show us the back of his boxers.
I’m not sure if everyone else was watching but it was a strange, reality show-like view into someone I probably would never meet in person.
Is this what OnlyFans is like? I had only read sordid headlines from The New York Post about all the teachers who get caught, just trying to hustle for a little extra change and attention.
But, I wouldn’t pay for this side of humanity.
We saw our teacher riffle through some papers, go into the bathroom with something in his hand, and shut the door.
I wanted to give this good man his privacy, and log off, but I paid for this class.
He came out with the something and put it next to his phone.
“All set to drop it off after my class… just praying I don’t have giardia,” he typed in the group chat.
And with that, I left the virtual class and then wrote an email asking for a refund.
