Since retiring in 2010 from a career as a consultant to global corporations, I've published two historical novels that have won rave reviews from Kirkus, Clarion, Publishers' Weekly, and Pirates and Privateers Magazine.

Current project: Doppelganger: An American Spy in World War II France is now finished and nearing its publication date. Stay tunes!

I've been a passionately, joyfully addicted reader all my life, thanks to the encouragement of my parents, the riches in their well-stocked library, and a mom who read to all of us continuously as infants/little kid.

I taught English for 20 years, picking up a MA in American Literature and a Ph.D. in English Renaissance Literature along the way; besides helping kids learn the critical skills of wri ...more

Clearly, my subconscious/dream state selected the scene and decided to make it available to me. i have no idea how that actually happens, but I'm grateful :-). The genesis of my newest novel, Doppelganger: An American Spy in World War II France, was what is now the first chapter. Here's how it starts -- pretty much exactly as it emerged two years ago:

PARIS—JUNE 20, 1940

The crude insult caught Walter Hirsch’s attention immediately. “Arschloch,” one of the German officers sitting two tables away said. Now that’s a switch, Walter thought, with a bemused smile. People usually wait to get to know me a bit before calling me an “asshole.”
“Jah. Natürlich. Amerikaner,” laughed his companion. The Germans had been in Paris for less than a week. One by one, Walter’s favorite restaurants had been taken over by their new, grey-clad customers. Now they’d managed to find his special quiet place, the tree-lined outdoor terrace of the Brasserie Chez Jenny in the 3rd arrondissement theater district
“Lächerlich. Dieser Depp weiß nicht mal wie man isst,” the first one continued, clumsily pantomiming an American switching his fork from his left to his right hand to eat the meat he had just cut.
Walter instinctively looked down at his hands. Well, they spotted that quickly enough … I probably shouldn’t mess with these guys. I’ve seen how they treat civilians. They don’t fool around. But insulting my country ….
Walter eavesdropped on the Germans’ conversation as he addressed the remains of his Strasbourg sausage and Chez Jenny’s incomparable sauerkraut, accompanied by a lovely 1935 Clos Saint Landelin Gewürztraminer. The Germans were complaining about the food. Small wonder. Anton liked to piss on the sauerkraut before sending it out to Germans.
