one more before I go to work

Here is a sample of the goods in my upcoming poetry collection, Brawl At The Poets Cafe:

hero

i try not to burden others
with the appellation of hero
but if i had any
they would be guys like america’s
most decorated WWII vet audie murphy
who gave everything he had for his country
and then suffered silently with PTSD
for the rest of his life
through the years of alcoholism
bad investments
bad movies
bad women and even worse divorces
finally to be lowered into the grave
that all those nazis couldn’t get him into
those many years before
so many of us hate war
but we should never confuse this
with hating the men and women who wear the uniform
and serve with distinction
in simpler terms:
don’t hate the player
hate the game
