It was a sunny day in Arleta, California. A layer of smog covered the sky, giving it the most illustrious orange hue. My brother and I were anxiously awaiting our five-day Easter vacation with our father. Our parents were going through a tumultuous divorce and had been separated for about a year at this point. I felt extremely sad because I never got to see my “dad.” I thought it odd that he cut all ties with our family, especially his own children. At only four years of age, I couldn’t understand the concept of a father wanting nothing to do with his kids. Imagine the excitement my brother, who was seven at the time, and I felt after almost a year of not seeing him. Now we were going to get to spend five whole days for Easter with our “dad.”

Tell us about you as a person.
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why? Drew Barrymore! She is so much fun. She really just seems to love life and the little things like I do. I could see us chasing butterflies and singing and dancing in the street together!
What’s the story behind your latest book?
I have been told over my lifetime by several psychics to write my story. I never felt ready. It didn’t seem like I had anything positive to share. Until I listened to The Body Keeps The Score By Bessel van der Kolk. I had so many aha moments from this book. For example, I had PTSD for 44 years and hadn’t realized it. I also read about Intermittent Explosive Disorder, which allowed me to see that the times I blew up was not because I was crazy; rather I felt endangered in one way or another.
After reading this book, I knew I had to reach out to Bessel because his book really spoke to me. Within the next three weeks I attended a workshop led by him. It was after this that I realized I did have something to share and it was a positive message. I’d made it through. Not only did I make it through but I’m a very positive, happy and successful person.
When my sister from another mister suggested ResilientAF as the title for Kissing Asphalt. After this, I realized that she was right, I was ResilientAF, so, I decided to call the entire series that instead.
I wrote this book so that I could help others realize that we are all ResilientAF and can make it through anything life throws our way.
Not My Circus, the second book in the series should be released in July so keep an eye out for the announcement of pre-sale. This book picks up where Kissing Asphalt leaves off. It takes you up to the point where my mother’s murderer is convicted. The Queen of Silver Linings is about three quarters of the way through the rough draft and my ultimate goal is to release the entire series in 2024. This book goes through my healing journey, all of the plant medicines, breathwork, therapy, etc…I have done and continue to do to get to where I am today.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their latest book?
There are so many options, I would say be careful and make sure that whoever is offering you services for this is legitimate.
Any final thoughts?
I’m really excited to get my story out to the world and want to make a difference. I love it when people write me and tell me that my story moved them in ways I could not have imagined. It brings me joy beyond belief to help others through turning my tragedy into something beautiful.

Patricia Averbach began her writing career at sixteen as the entirely unqualified literary assistant to Anzia Yeszierska, Jewish-American author of the immigrant experience. A native Clevelander, she’s a former director of The Chautauqua Writers Center in Chautauqua, New York. Her newest novel, Dreams of Drowning (Bedazzled Ink, 2024), was a finalist for the Tucson Festival of Books and Chanticleer’s Somerset Award for Literary Fiction. Previous novels include Painting Bridges (Bottom Dog Press, 2013) and Resurrecting Rain (Golden Antelope Press, 2020.) Her poetry chapbook, Missing Persons, (Ward Wood Publishing, 2013) was cited by Times of London Literary Supplement (November 2014) as one of the best small collections of the year. She lives with her husband in a suburb of Cleveland when she’s not visiting her daughters in Toronto, Maui and Peru or hanging out in a virtual world called Second Life.
