EXCERPT
“Tilia,” Esmeralda called, pulling me out of my daydreaming about how I first came here six years ago. She was wearing a beautiful emerald ball gown and was by far the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. Even as similar as we looked I wasn’t as beautiful as her. My nose was too short, my eyes shaped more like my father’s than hers, and as much as I wanted to believe I was beautiful, I could see the flaws in myself more often than my beauty. “What are you thinking about?” she asked as she stood beside me on the edge of the ballroom. People swirled around us in a vortex of rainbow colored silk and jewels.
“Just remembering the day I came here,” I explained.
“I know life is so boring here,” she said with a dramatic sigh.
I laughed and hugged her. “I love it here. I just miss my dad.”
“So I really came over here to see if you wanted to sneak off with me and spar? This ball is really boring,” she whispered in my ear.
I looked at the Queen, a fierce woman who was one of the best mages in all of the kingdoms, one of the only two Arch Mages, an exceptional sword fighter, and married to a man who won every tournament he entered. This country was unlike any I could have imagined. Instead of the Queen sitting in the castle and the King letting his military fight his battles from the safety of his castle, both of them set off into battle at the head of their military and bled right along with them. Women were allowed to join the military and it was even encouraged! I thought I would be stuck in a dusty castle, but instead I had been instructed in magic, reading, politics, and every fighting style available. I was already a Journeyman, but my hope was to become an Arch Mage, like my aunt, although I wasn’t sure it would happen since I seemed to have very little magic. It seemed more likely that I would progress in the King’s Steel, the men and women who preferred hand to hand combat to magic, instead of the Queen’s Fire, the men and women who possessed magic.
“Let’s go,” I said to her with a wide smile. I looped my arm through hers and we walked through the ballroom as though strolling through it and then ran to our rooms to change. I walked out of my room, closed my door, and found that she was already waiting for me. “Did anyone see you?” I asked her.
She shook her head. “We better hurry before Jared…”
“Before Jared what?” asked King Jared from the main floor below us. He had dark brown hair, piercing blue eyes, and a chiseled jaw. Everywhere he went women stopped breathing for a moment as they took in his appearance. His good looks paired with his fighting honed physique made him a heart stopper. He also stopped the hearts of men when he approached because he was the most feared fighter in all of the kingdoms. He had obtained the highest rank in the King’s Steel before becoming King and was the one and only Dragon of Crilan.
“We’ve been found!” Esmeralda hissed. “Retreat!” She grabbed my hand and we both ran down the stairs and towards the door that led to the training grounds at the back of the castle.
“Halt!” Jared yelled.
I stopped, but Esmeralda pulled on my arm, “Your Queen commands you to ignore the King!”
I giggled and kept running with her. She reached for the doorknob and opened it to find Jared on the other side.
“Curse your swiftness!” she yelled with mock anger.
He smirked at us, blocked the doorway with his wide shoulders, and asked, “Aren’t you supposed to be at a ball? A ball that I am forced to attend as well?”
“It’s so boring!” Esmeralda whined, transforming into a spoiled child as she pouted at her husband.
“So you and Tilia were sneaking off to go have fun while your poor husband and King was left to endure the boringness alone?” he asked as though we had betrayed him.
“You could come with us?” I suggested with a smile and bounced on the balls of my feet.
He looked at me a moment and said, “She is definitely from your bloodline, Esmeralda.”
She beamed proudly and said, “I know. It’s glorious, isn’t it?”
“People will notice that you are gone,” he scolded Esmeralda.
She stuck out her bottom lip in a pout and said, “Please.”
He sighed and placed his hand on her face. “Alright. Go have fun. I will be the responsible adult for tonight.”
She kissed his cheek and said, “Next boring event I will let you sneak out.”

Author Bios
Jacob Bio:
A little about Jacob:
For as much as I think I’m probably different than most writes, I’m probably not. I am an engineer by trade, with 2 degrees in finance, but I live for my lunch break because that is when I get to write. The last year or 2 I’ve been playing around with different ideas and none of them seemed to stick, but then Ryan came to me with the idea for Corlex and one simple question “Do you want to write a book together?” and that as they say ‘Is History.’
Some of what I like:
I’m a giant nerd, I’ve been watching Star Trek since I was 7, I love going to Cons and DOTA 2 is my favorite game. However, on any given fall Saturday though you will find me in front of my TV cheering on the Oklahoma State Cowboy Football Team with my wife.
Practice while you walk
Greetings my name is Jacob and I am one of the authors of the series Corlex. In today’s post I am going to talk about a way to practice writing when you do not have a lot of time to actually sit down and write.
I am a full time engineer, married and have other hobbies outside of writing as well, so my time to sit down with pen and paper is very limited. I normally get at most 45 minutes a day, and some lucky weekends 2 hours a day, but those days are few and far between. So how do I work on my writing game? How do I practice an art that takes time and effort to master?
I practice while I walk.
It is almost exactly ½ mile from my car to my desk every morning and this walk provides an ample opportunity to try out different narrative styles, and perspectives by simply describing the world around me in my head.
For example, some days I work on a first perspective ‘I walked towards the impending dread of another day in the white building that sucks my soul’
Or perhaps you can get into a third person narrative that has little to nothing to do with your actual day to day routine
‘His feet carried him along the side walk, he could hear the footsteps of other co-workers, but his mind was far away from here.’
You can also get into descriptive practice
‘The sun still hung low in the morning sky, leaving slight shades of red and purple hanging in the air.”
There is so much to describe, think about and write about, on a simple walk from your car to your desk chair. I encourage everyone to use this free time to sharpen your game and perhaps learn a new trick or style that you might not have thought about before.
-J
Ryan Bio
I’ve always had a fervent curiosity about the sci-fi world, but never truly pursued writing it down on paper until my good friend Jacob and I schemed together the idea for Corlex. He has always been a great inspiration to me and I am thankful for the opportunities we have to come up with new ideas for you readers!
I spend most of his time dreading the work hour, and when I come home I soak up much needed family time with my wife and two boys. I have always been an avid and dedicated game, and recently opened my own stream under Twitch. Here you can find me testing out all the newest games such as Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, GTA5, and more!

Book Excerpt – The Samsaric
About the Book
Title: The Samsaric
Author: G.W. Lwin
Genre: Fantasy Horror
The plague of 1918 A.D:
The mortal world is in a state of devastation.
A woman wakes up in an abandoned temple of Kali, the goddess of darkness, in an ancient city of Gaya.
She does not know where she is.
She does not remember the events leading to this.
She only hears a familiar voice of a tormented man who has haunted her dreams.
He tells her a story – of a time of souls and suffering, of immortality and gods, of life and death.
This, he says, is Mesopotamia.
THE SAMSARIC is a fantasy-horror novel based on ancient vampirism, history and mythology. Set in an era widely considered to be the cradle of civilization, it is a story of once-powerful mortal races and ancient gods and goddesses to excite and inspire.
Author Bio
I love anything that comprises the old and the ancient full of rich history and spirituality. For me, reading and learning from our ancient past is truly a beautiful, unique and intriguing journey.
From a young age, I have felt that there were two versions of me: the old spiritual one and a young soul who still lives in his fantasy world.
However, both of these versions share one commonality – my interest in vampires from the ancient mythology and beliefs. I was mesmerised by their folklore since young.
The need to express is very strong within me. Writing, for me, provides this gateway and helps me to grow as a person. It is a life-long learning path that I gladly embark.
As a writer, I would like to improve each and every stage of writing, to possess the art of crafting words to communicate the emotions that arise from within to the readers … a vision shared by many authors.

Book Excerpt
THE CHILDREN OF ERESHKIGAL
The last rays of sun shone over the plains of Uruk as the early hours of evening began, casting deeper shadows in the ruined part of the city turning grey in the approaching moonlight.
The young woman ran into the woods, as fast as she could, not noticing that she had left the path and that the trees which loomed over her beat with an ancient pulse, as though the forest was conscious of her every move. She stopped to catch her breath, realising she was alone, absorbed by silence, stillness and darkness.
Only then did she realise how far she had gone and that she was lost.
She panicked, taking a step forward, her eyes unseeing in the dark. She tripped on what seemed like a huge stone and fell, gagging as a foul scent rose from the cloud of dirt that her fall had triggered. The scent was the scent of death and it hovered over her. As the moon cleared a path through the clouds to shine on her, she took a look at what had tripped her: it was a severed head, decomposed to the point it barely resembled a human. The body lay nearby, naked and bloated. Her screams of fear echoed deep into the forest, alerting all within of her presence. But not a sound answered her, except for a single snap of a twig.
“Who goes there?” she said, turning in the direction of the sound.
“Who goes there?” she cried in terror and began to cry as she heard footsteps drawing nearer.
There was a rush of air, a swoop as of an eagle passing her and then a pair of arms encompassed her, picking her up and carrying her away at the speed of the wind.
“Close your eyes, Shuri,” a familiar voice said—the voice she had betrayed the trust of and ran from. There was a sudden cessation of movement, a lack of wind, and Shuri felt herself being placed gently but firmly on her feet, a pair of arms clasping her.
“Let me go! Let me go!” she shouted, trying to break away from his embrace.
“Calm down! Calm down, Shuri! It is I,” Eden said warmly, holding her until her resistance broke and she clung to him in return, weeping.
“Shhhh. It is all right, Shuri, it is all going to be all right. Come now, we need to head back to city. Sumur and Druaga must be very worried about our absence,” Eden said, comforting her.
“Eden, I don’t know who or what you are, or the stories you’ve told me earlier. Right now I just want to go home; please, Eden, please take me home, I need to see my parents. I need to know they are alive!” Shuri sobbed.

GENRE: Fantasy

BLURB:
With the rift closed for the season and no more monsters to fight, Daelin Long gets bored as librarian in the podunk town of Settler, Oregon. A job interview and her brother’s arrival present a tempting opportunity to escape, until her brother and her best friend, a ghost, disappear.
While Daelin searches for them, more mysteries pile up: dead people coming back to life, portraits of the town founders replaced with strange white trees, and people on the other side of the rift returning. It’s impossible. The portal that allows monsters from other universes to come to Earth is sealed until next summer.
The Rifters, a secret group protecting our world, believe the troubles are nothing more than the tantrums of an offended ghost. Daelin disagrees. If she’s right, the evil hell-bent on destroying Earth has new technology making the rift more deadly.
Before the monster summons the next apocalypse, Daelin must find it and destroy it.
Book 3 in the Rifter series.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book Excerpt
A modified pair of 1920’s aviator goggles hung around Daelin Long’s neck. She pulled them up over her eyes—the same inky shade as her hair. The lenses distorted the world in tints of violet except for the space in the middle of the two obsidian pillars rising as high as the twisted juniper between them. The air amid the columns sizzled in cobalt lines and tangled together into a blue ball. The sky lightened and the energy dissipated.
“So the rift is good and shut. Is that what the disappearance of the blue energy ball means?” she asked.
“Mmhmm. The sphere of energy was there all summer. Now it’s not.” Sabina brushed her fine white curls behind a pair of bold ears. “Now you have proof the rift closes on the fall equinox. You’re the sort in need of evidence.”
“Yeah, I’m a pain that way. Here’s the thing though, Sabina, this year the portal opened three days early. You heard what Earl said.” Earl Blacke had more secrets than Daelin’s sister, more secrets than a town with a mysterious portal leading to other universes, more secrets than the ghost watching over the library. “How do you know the rift won’t open again when it’s not supposed to?”
“I’ve been a Rifter longer than you’ve blinked. You needn’t worry so much. You forget your first lesson as quickly as you demonstrate your knowledge of it.” Sabina held out an arm.
“Trust.” Daelin took hold of her boss’s hand and helped Sabina onto her feet. “We can blame my mother for my inability to stick with my lessons. She taught me to never trust.” If Daelin hadn’t questioned her mother constantly, her brother, sister, and herself wouldn’t have made it out of childhood. “I suppose I’ll never progress farther than the rank of Initiate in the Rifters then?” She didn’t mind being the lackey of the elite group of townspeople who battled otherworldly monsters, then the group wouldn’t miss her when it came time for her to leave.
The phone rang. We had overslept. Matt was late for work and I had missed my first class. Not only did we need the sleep, but needed that run, too. This was the first time in days that we had slept soundly through the night.
Matt cursed before throwing the blanket off and muttered a few curses on his way to finding his robe. Better him than me. My day was pretty much shot because I’d never make it to my second class either. I’d have to email one of my fellow graduate students and find out what I had missed.
The prerecorded female voice came on, suggesting the caller leave their name and a brief message, promising we’d return their call.
“We need to talk,” a male voice said.
Matt froze, eyes flicking wide before narrowing tight on the phone beside our bed. That look alone told me all I needed to know. It was Stephan Carlisle.
He continued, “I was hoping to meet your wife over lunch. Honestly. If we meant you any harm, I wouldn’t be talking to this machine. I’d be on your porch.”
He hung up.
I stared at my husband. “He found our unlisted phone number. How much do you want to bet his pack knows where we live?”
Matt grumbled some more before heading into the bathroom and slamming the door behind him.
He wasn’t sure why, but Scotty felt for the first time that he was not alone. It was a strange feeling. Once, on the job, he had felt that way in a dark warehouse when he’d found a broken window while checking a building at night.
“118 to radio.”
“Go ahead 118,” the operator responded.
“I’m at 2732 Wertz Boulevard off Sammon with a broken window at the rear of the building. Not sure if it is fresh. Possible forced entry. Send another unit.”
“10-4.”
In a few minutes, two other marked units pulled up with their lights off. One stayed at the front, and one came back to Scotty’s location. It was Pete Shona, Scotty’s former field training officer.
“What ya got?” Pete said in a whisper.
“Not sure. I’ve been off for two, but I don’t remember this window being out the last time I was back here. What do you think?”
Pete looked at the glass and spoke softly. “It looks fresh to me. See the shards still sticking to the edges? I think we’ve got us a burglar.”
