VBT – LIFE WITH OLLIE

Life with Ollie: The story of an only child of a single narcissistic parent

by Donna Bourgeois

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Memoir
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

[image error]

BLURB:

If you are of dating age or married, I wrote this book for you.

This is not a self-help or a how-to book. This is the story of the metamorphosis of a timid, fear filled child who finally blossomed into a warrior. I have many scars that no one can see, but they are healed now. Through these battles to become a warrior, I have helped the wounded souls that have come to me and seen them overcome their demons to stand tall and proud of who they are. It has brought me great joy.

Through the years, I have heard along the way that the ancient Chinese would fix their broken china cups or figurines with gold to make them whole again, and more valuable. I believe that humans can be repaired with love and a sense of self-worth. Each and every one of us are here for a purpose and we are given gifts to help fulfill our purpose.

I would love for you to come on this journey with me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
We decided we would move to Ontario to have a better life. We bought our first home, a fixer-upper, and rebuilt the inside. We had been trying for a baby for five years without success. A friend of mine had a young daughter who had become pregnant in her second last year of high school. She asked me if I would be willing to take the baby until her daughter finished school. I said I would and she sent me money to buy everything the baby needed. I was excited and would go into her dresser drawers and count all the little outfits and rearrange them so many times. When the baby was born, she had no fingers on her left hand. This did not bother me, but my mother left the planet. Oh, what a debacle that was. She phoned my friends and told them they were not dumping their freak on me.
These phone calls continued until my friend called me and said she would keep the baby. She and her husband were afraid of my mother. So, I packed up her clothes with a sad, sad heart and mailed them to my friend. I went over the edge and my girlfriend called the doctor and he came and sedated me. Mom had won again.
My husband did nothing to defend me while I was under attack. It was like he didn’t care one way or the other. For the twenty-two years we were married, he never—not once—came to my aid when I was under attack from my mother.
Mom’s Choice Gold Award Winner
“…the more conceptual discussion of algorithms is well done, and the story is satisfying and emotionally resonant.” — Kirkus Reviews
My name is Merlin Raj and I live in Sleepy Hollow. Legend has it that a Headless Horseman haunts the town. Usually, I only have to worry about helping my boy, Matthew, to walk at school. But during the spookiest time of year, we’ll tackle the scariest creature of all—big brother.
Boo!
Will learning conditional logic save this family’s Halloween from certain doom?
Appealing to readers of all ages, Merlin Raj and the Drones of Sleepy Hollow is an ILLUSTRATED chapter-book. From artists to astronauts, the jobs of the future will deal with computers. But do kids want to read a coding book? Not as much as dog stories.
With a Computer Science degree and a passion for preparing kids for the future, author D. G. Priya blends technology with animal stories to stimulate a desire to read.Each book in the series introduces a new programming skill. If you or your child like delightful dog tales that explores universally positive themes, including empathy, kindness, dedication, and the importance of being true to one’s self, then you’ll love D. G. Priya’s tail-wagging adventure.
After a rousing “Trick or Treat,” Matthew got some sticky taffy. He plunked it into the pumpkin-shaped plastic bag. He’d also put a second sack on my back, in case he ran out of room. We expected to knock on a lot of homes.
Peter marched up to the front door. He flew the pumpkin-head drone ahead of him. It had a small net hanging from it. Peter reached the lady giving out the candy. He drove the drone in front of the candy bowl in her hands and declared, “Trick or treat!”
“What?” Matthew muttered at my side. “He got two pieces.”
As he walked back toward us, Peter smirked. “Guess who’s going to win?”
“You cheater,” Matthew said.
I nodded in agreement.
“It’s not cheating if I’m just smarter,” Peter said.
Book Blast – SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL
This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding a $15 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner.
Four warriors on one hell of a mission.
Lieutenant Colonel Tyler Graven is known as the “Demon of Kyoto,” and he specializes in death. When an assassin attempts to kill pharmaceutical mogul Mortimer Sackler, Tyler becomes the lead suspect and the target of a $100 million dollar hit. To save himself and clear his name, he must hunt down the true killer, a deadly entity known only as The Priest.
Tyler teams up with his former military unit, The Four Horseman, including his brother, crack-shot Corporal Jack Graven, the mysterious Lance Corporal Jin Xialong, and his one-time flame Colonel Diana Levitas. Once, they were an elite fighting team known for completing two of the most successful campaigns against terrorism ever launched. Now, they’ll find themselves locked in a war with The Church, the most influential organization on the planet–and pitted against the supernatural forces of the Underworld itself.
During their mission, Tyler and Jack learn of the legendary Black Muramasa, the only weapon that can destroy immortals such as demons, angels, vampires, seraphim, and nephilim. As they uncover the secrets of the ancient black blade–and their own heritage–they are faced with unforetold powers and infinite evils. If the Four Horsemen succeed, they may save themselves. If they fail, it’ll cost them their sanity, their lives, and even their souls…
Here comes an action-packed, gun-slinging fantasy adventure that packs the punch of a military thriller combined with high-stakes supernatural intrigue.
Read an Excerpt
Jack attacked high, elbows swinging in vicious hooks, while I swung a right roundhouse at the front of the priest’s right knee. The Priest deflected my first kick with his shin, but my second snapped out without hesitation toward his head. He brought his daggered hand up to block, which would have surely cut my leg to ribbons had I not pulled my kick. Simultaneously he swung his left dagger in a backhand at Jack’s face. Jack threw his body in a backward somersault, catching The Priest under the chin with a solid kick that sent him stumbling backward. I sought to capitalize by catching him in the right temple with a right heel kick, but The Priest managed to stab his left dagger through my foot.
I hobbled back in agony and collapsed to the floor. He turned his back on me and faced off against Jack. The two eyed each other in slightly crouched stances, their hands eye level before them.
“You chose the wrong side, pup,” The Priest mocked. “I had thought you were smarter than that.”
“If I had known you would kill an innocent woman, I would have killed you in that garage. You can’t even see the irony in your beliefs.”
“How innocent could the wife of that villain be? Did she do anything for all of the innocents that her husband killed?”
“Guilty by association then?”
“We all are.”
The Priest surged toward Jack, knives stabbing forward at neck, face, and armpits with merciless and unending precision. I had never seen blades dance the way his did. Every move was perfectly balanced and precision timed, each extension of his limbs perfectly stretched and recoiled. He was a finely tuned machine of death, and every ounce of his hate was drawn toward Jack.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

“It’s in the blood, dear,” said Ellen, one of the women Sandy shared time and space with, her skin worn by age, hard labor, and days spent under the sun. Blotches, liver spots and creases led the observer to the eyes. One dark, the other a cataract milky white and she always wore a dark shawl draped over the head and shoulders. Sandy was afraid of Ellen, she reminded Sandy of a gypsy or witch from a fairy-tale.

“Come again?” said Sandy, her eyes shifting from soldier to Ellen to soldier then back to Ellen.

Ellen had cut herself transferring a wood bucket filled with rice to add to an already large trough of buckets. A thick wood splinter pinned in the bottom of her palm dripping with a thick stream of blood. She turned to Sandy raising the bloodied palm and caught a drop of blood in her unwounded hand.

“The blood dear,” said Ellen. “All magic comes from the blood.”

Sandy cringed at the sight; she’d always been squeamish. Her stomach bumped, blood curled. Magic, Sandy thought. If only magic was real. How wonderful would that be? Sandy understood she was naïve, the result of an isolated childhood and her parents’ death when she was ten years old. Not that they had taught the young Sandy about the world she lived in either. They’d kept her under lock and key, never so much as offering a glimpse or advice on the outside world. They were always so cryptic with their explanations, living in an abundant and overgrown mansion as if luxury were a childhood friend. Sure there were plenty of rooms for a child to explore but as time went by those rooms seemed more like a prison than a home.

Years of neglect, isolation and secrets were as torturous as physical suffering. And she was tired of secrets. She wanted to know truth. Truth was like a blanket that keeps you warm in the coldest winter.

“The blood, Sandy,” said Ellen who clenched her fist around those crimson droplets, shaking her hand in front of her face. “All is in the blood.”

Clay lowered his body down to her right side. “Smells girly in here too. Like you. Like roses and lemons?”

“Didn’t you know? All women have to burn candles periodically. It’s part of our handbook.”

“Really? Can’t say I did know. Do you have a copy of this handbook? You know. For science.”

Julia shrugged. “Maybe I ruined our secret. No written copies available for men.”

“Maybe you did.” He stared at her, his gaze roving across her body. “So you want to watch a movie or something?”

His blood was humming, his pulse racing. He hoped hers was too.

“A movie? Sure. Perfect.” She flipped the TV on, settling on the first movie she saw, some random comedy. “This one okay?”

His gaze locked on her. “Perfect.”

“Yep. Perfect.” She glanced down at her hands in her lap.

It was time to make a move. “So can I?” He scooted even closer as he ran the pad of his thumb over her bottom lip, her skin hot beneath his fingers.

She blinked. “Can you what?”

“Kiss you?” He hovered, almost touching her lips with his. But he waited.

“Please.” She took a ragged breath before he slid his hand to the back of her neck, pulling her even closer to him, his gaze locked with hers. He took his time, kissing her like she was a fine wine, something to savor. Like he was a drowning man and the only oxygen was through her.

Book Blast – BOUND TO PROTECT

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The weight of the world on her shoulders…

Sabrina Thomas needs to catch a break. By day she juggles two jobs, only to head home at night to care for her mentally ill brother. With their parents gone, the responsibility for his care, the doctor’s bills, the hospital stays, the at home care, falls to her. Six months ago, the trust fund their parents left them dried up and with the mounting bills, she has until the end of the month to make good on late rent payments before they are evicted. Sabrina knows where she could make a lot of quick cash with her looks: Bayou Sin, the classiest strip joint on Bourbon Street. But her plans go awry when Dante hauls her off the stage and takes her to his penthouse.

His lifestyle called into question…

Billionaire Michael Fitzgerald and his partner in crime, Dante Rousseau, have been topping submissives together for years. As the owner of the fifth largest sugarcane supplier, with a host of multi-conglomerate corporations to run, Michael has always kept his bedroom preferences under wraps. When a rival on the board attempts to engage in a hostile takeover and have Michael expelled from his own company, he knows he needs to find a woman he can trust to pretend to be his fiancée and put the kibosh on the illicit rumors spreading like wildfire through the company’s board members. When Dante shows up with their housekeeper, Sabrina, who is spitting mad at being denied the opportunity to make some fast cash, Michael knows she is just the woman for the job.

An offer neither can refuse…

Michael and Dante make Sabrina a deal: pretend to be Michael’s sole love interest for thirty days to dispel the rumors and stop the takeover. In exchange, they will pay her ten million dollars at month’s end. But the lines soon become blurred as to what is real and what is make believe. And when their time together is up, will they be able to walk away, or will they take the chance to make their relationship the real deal?

Read an Excerpt

Michael stepped off the elevator into the plush offices on the executive floor of Fitzgerald Foods, the company his grandfather had built from the ground up. He wore wealth like most individuals wore a pair of jeans—with absolute ease and familiarity. He was comfortable with his privilege now, at thirty-six, when he hadn’t always been growing up. But Michael had been raised in a world of wealth and privilege few ever achieved or experienced. He knew how fortunate he was, but at the same time he bore a mantle of responsibility most people could never comprehend. This company and all of those he owned had thousands of employees who depended upon him to make the right decision for all involved. One wrong move on his part and his people, the people the company depended on to make everything run seamlessly, from the factory workers to the office personnel and distribution channels, suffered.

That was one thing his father had made sure Michael understood. He wasn’t the company. He was only its guide and navigator. The company ran because of everyone involved, from the Board members on down to the janitor. He believed in an honest day’s work, in ensuring that those who worked for Fitzgerald Foods—one of the subsidiaries of Ragnall Sugar started by his great-great-grandfather more than a century ago, or his Hollywood production company Conmar, or real estate firm Fitzgerald-Logan Realty—were well compensated for their efforts.

For this morning’s board meeting, he’d chosen a tailored suit in a crisp dark gray that made his indigo eyes standout and bespoke of that wealth. He was comfortable wearing the platinum Rolex on his left wrist and the black Italian leather shoes had been hand crafted for his feet the last time he’d been in Italy, along with the Cavalli silk tie adorning his neck in vermouth with a diamond shaped pattern.

His dark golden hair, currently sporting lighter blond streaks from his time away under the sun on Pleasure Island, reached his chin. The longer style was an affectation he had developed while attending university abroad in Europe more than a decade past. He’d drawn it back into a stubby ponytail and figured that, combined with his trim, close cropped beard, gave him a more down to earth appeal.

He didn’t miss the sly looks from the receptionist and administrative assistants that stated quite clearly they found him attractive. Many of them would be only too happy to be called into his office for something other than work.

Michael appreciated women in all their varied flavors. He respected them. But he also hadn’t been with a woman in the vanilla sense in fifteen years, and doubted that most of the women vying for his attention would satisfy him. Not to mention, he seriously doubted they realized that, when he did select a partner, it was with the intent to share her with his best friend, Dante.

Book Blast – MOON IN BASTET

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A memoir turned into thrilling fiction; Moon in Bastet is based on the life of author E. S. Danon. The story follows a fourteen-year-old girl named Eva, an orphan living in the Negev desert of Israel who is working as a custodian of Cirque Du Christianisme. Her life is controlled by a volatile drunk named Bella who favors a group of equally volatile teenage bullies over her and her own safety or sanity.

Bullied, neglected, and alone – Eva’s only friends are an odd, thirteen–year–old Sephardic boy named Jack and a small cohort of Bedouin sister-wives. On the brink of giving up on life, Eva stumbles upon a mysterious cat in the middle of the desert. Or really, did the cat stumble upon her?

Together they must fight to stay alive, win the battles thrown at them, and Eva must learn to not only lean on others but to trust in herself.

Filled with mystery, magic, and symbolism – Moon in Bastet is a story of resilience, survivorship, forgiveness, and women empowerment. This is a work filled with Jewish mysticism that can be enjoyed by people of all races, ages, and religions everywhere.

Read an Excerpt

Mist twinkles atop the desert sand as a cohort of camels take their morning promenade. A girl runs past them, chasing the rising globe of fire.

Her breath labors as she slips on a rock.

“Ugh!”

A perfect little scrape forms on her knee, but she continues onward and unfazed.

Her skin is olive tinted; her head covered by a canopy of endless brown, curly hair. On her face sit two prominent beauty marks, on either side of her mouth. She is slender and not yet fully grown, but by no means does she have a frail frame. She wears a beige, spaghetti strapped dress that is knee length and complete with a secret pocket – all of which is covered in dirt. A headband woven from plants and flowers sits around the girl’s head.

This girl is named Eva.

She sprints up another dune’s side, her dress ballooning around her as she sits suddenly with crossed legs. The mirage of the sun’s gaseous performance begins to play on the horizon; another Israeli sun rise in the Negev. Like toy soldiers, the sun’s rays advance in a medley of oranges and yellows. Pink is usually reserved for sunrises – however on this day, a rosy aura is cast around the girl as she grabs a rock and casts it towards the sun: This is how a desert girl skips rocks. Next, she takes aim at the arse of the nearest camel.

The rock misses by centimeters, causing a fuss amongst the cohort, but Eva’s almond shaped, brown eyes glisten.

“G-d! Adonai! Where are you? I see you in the colors of the sky!” Her voice echoes as her eyes drift upon the sunrise. “Why are you ignoring me like everyone else does? I feel you in the warmth of light but where are you? Why haven’t you rescued me yet?” She shivers and brings her bare feet in closer to herself. “Can you at least give me a jacket? You’re not very gentleman-like, you know… it’s really chilly this morning.”

Eva puckers her lips in defeat, and then meditates in the following silence, focusing on the warmth ricocheting from the sand and onto her goosebumps.

“Well at least my cramps are gone,” she says once her anxiety diminishes – massaging her lower stomach, happy that her most recent predicament has gone away. “But yet I still must deal with the cramp of life: being unheard and misunderstood.”

Reminded of the reason why she came to pray in the first place, Eva turns to the sky and gives a cloud a dirty look. “G-d, you have approximately twenty-four hours or I will throw rocks at every camel that I see! I can’t survive in that stupid Circus another day.” She throws a finger towards the unsuspecting cloud in the sky and pauses, thinking of a way to coax G-d into saving her.

“You know what – if you like your camels so much, then you better get me out of this place!” Shaking her head, she mumbles, “I’ll just throw rocks at each of their heads. Not like they would care. They’re already dumb… dumb camels.” She looks at a moon shaped scar on the top of her hand, given to her by one of the water-hoarding creatures several years ago.

“Dumb camels,” she repeats.

Silence again is all that responds to Eva once she finishes speaking to herself. She slumps over, shrugs, and decides to head back to her home that sits half-a-mile away from the dunes.

Her feet slip on the sand, causing her to lift her left hand to her face. She huffs as she thinks of her favorite book; reading it gives her solace in her own solitude. Eva sighs, feeling stuck in an ocean made of sand and trapped with her own imaginary desert marlin. She’s already picked out several camels to act as the sharks.

Ironically, one of the camels spits at her as she passes – as if asking, “Where’s your rock – dumb human?”

“Rude,” she mutters in response.

Eva finds her way to a camp studded with only several architectural structures that is surrounded by seven-foot-high wall made of sand. There is only one exit and one entrance, a sky-high rectangular structure made of wood that suffices as a gate. As she skips under it, a sign that reads Cirque du Christianism sways after her.

Officially home, she is welcomed by an array of Circus tents.

Her lazy footsteps saunter past the main tent to her right, soon halting as she approaches a much smaller blue tent. Looking back towards a white tipi, she can feel her body tensing as she holds her breath before leaping forward in front of the blue tent.

I hope he doesn’t attract attention to me.

About the Author:

Elizabeth Danon received her B.S. in Marine Science from Stony Brook University before working as a Marine Biologist for the National Marine Fisheries Service. She traveled the U.S. Eastern Seaboard and Gulf of Mexico: collecting data aboard commercial fishing vessels and dredges.

When that didn’t pan out to be the glorified job that she expected, finding herself covered in shark snot and fish scales daily, Elizabeth became a technical writer. In her spare time, she began doing standup comedy after taking comedy bootcamp with the Armed Services Arts Partnership. At this time, she married the most wonderful man who also provides most of her joke writing material. Unfortunately, because he’s Indian he has also enabled her Maggi addiction… Like she needed that on top of her already long-standing iced coffee issues.

Her favorite show is Schitt’s Creek, as she feels a special bond to her fellow comedians – and Sephardic brethren. Growing up half-Jewish herself, Elizabeth eventually converted to being full-Jewish with Temple Israel as a student of Rabbi Panitz.

Her enriched, but complicated, heritage has been an inspiration for most of her creative writing. Being an Aries, she has always felt like a leader and has therefore integrated her feminist beliefs into her work, albeit dropping every women’s studies course that she ever elected in college.

Additionally, her writing has an unmistakable international presence. Elizabeth wanted to discover as much as she could about her Sephardic Heritage and went on Birthright, followed by her independent travels to over ten other countries… carrying nothing but a red bookbag.

BLURB:

BLURB FOR BOOK I AND BOOK II – SONS OF CUBA

Relentless political turmoil streams through the veins of Cuba like lava coursing down the side of a volcano holding the Cuban people hostage to tyranny since Christopher Columbus discovered the Caribbean Island.  One wonders if the country’s destiny can ever change.

In BOOK I – SONS OF CUBA – PRELUDE TO REVOLUTION Felipe Cardena, the rebel, endures lost love, the exhilaration of victory, demoralizing disappoints, imprisonment, exile, and an assassination attempt.  Nothing will stop Felipe Cardena until he achieves his ultimate goal — free Cuba from tyranny.

In BOOK II – SONS OF CUBA – HOMECOMING after victory is declared by the Cuban rebels, the plot shifts away from the revolution and centers on Tangi Montolio, a fiery redheaded activist who once was one of the rebel leader’s most passionate supporters.  Tangi and her family become a victim and suffers under the hands of Felipe Cardena’s new leadership.  The rebel now turned dictator will discover that his brief interaction with Tangi will lead to the destruction of his legacy.

BOOK I – SONS OF CUBA – PRELUDE TO REVOLUTION

“FELIPE… Felipe Cardena,” the old man whispered, shaking the young recruit. “Wake up, you must hurry.”

“Wha… what is it?”

“El Presidente is sending the Cuban Navy to intercept this ship. He canceled the invasion of Santo Domingo.”

Felipe yawned and rolled over “So what? Maybe he changed his plans.”

The man dug his fingernails deep into Felipe’s shoulder. “Yes, there’s been a change in plans. A revolution may start any day and you’re on the wrong side.”

Felipe rolled over on the hard steel deck of the frigate’s makeshift dormitory, fought the sleepiness lingering in his head. He grabbed his heavy boots and shoved them on his feet trying not to wake the nearby soldiers.

He looked over at the old man. “Who the hell are you?” he whispered, fumbling with his laces.

“That’s not important. What’s important is Salabarrìa’s police shot and killed Emilio Trò. Fires are burning in the streets of Havana; mobs are overturning cars and buses. The rumor is that the troops on this ship are heading back to Havana to overthrow the Cuban government instead of liberating Santo Domingo. No one on this frigate is to be trusted. That includes you, my young amígo.”

Felipe rolled his sleeping bag, picked up his machine gun and backpack. He waited a moment for his eyes to focus in the darkness. Sounds of snoring and the odor of week-old sweat saturated the stale air in the lower deck.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

After a lifetime of personal adventures, travel and escapades (a lot of risky escapades), author Ellen Martin, is living her sunset years bouncing around a tennis court or clicking away on her keyboard.

Outrage at social injustices, the thrill for suspense, and unraveling a good mystery are triggers that motivate Ellen to write memorable stories and colorful characters.

Over 30 years as a military wife, she has resided both in the Orient and in Europe where she became no stranger to social injustice and poverty. She and her family have lived in the Philippines, Japan, Italy, and the Netherlands — not to mention both U.S. coasts and Kansas in the winter. She is fascinated by real-life, colorful personalities.

On a more personal note Ellen was a flight attendant for the Charter Airline Saturn in the 1960’s. Her job was escorting United States troops in and out of Viet Nam. Her adventures in the war zone continued until she was swept away by her fighter pilot husband.

After retirement the couple’s travels included Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungry, Spain, Scotland, and Ireland and topped off with a visit to Cuba.

God gifted Ellen with one “perfect” son and three grandchildren.

You wrap all this in a package and Ellen has been rewarded with an endless supply of fodder for her fiction.

In her historical fiction Book-I SONS OF CUBA–PRELUDE TO REVOLUTION she weaves an embellished tale of the most notorious and charismatic Cuban rebel in modern history. There’s a chance you might find him charming, intriguing and actually root for him in his early endeavors to free his beloved Cuba from tyranny.

However, in Book II – SONS OF CUBA – HOMECOMING, the story takes the reader from the rebel’s exile in Mexico to preparation for the revolution from the Mountains of the Sierra Maestra. This is where you will meet the fiery redheaded peasant girl, Tangi. The narrative shifts its focus from the revolution and centers around the fictional character, Tangi, and her family’s struggles, fears and disappointments in the new regime.

How the story in real life ends is no secret. But, in Book II – SONS OF CUBA – HOMECOMING, the characters and the author may just get the last word.

In 2020 Ellen’s new book INTO THE DEVIL’S DEN turns from historical events to present day reality – Terrorism — terrorism in our own backyard.

Q AND A FOR ELLEN W. MARTIN, AUTHOR SONS OF CUBA, a two book series

TELL US ABOUT YOU AS A PERSON.

I am a born optimist. Mr. Negativity sometimes sticks his toe in my door, but I push back. Eighty to ninety percent of the time my optimism wins. I’m a dreamer, am somewhat shy, and love playing tennis every chance I get (well, until Covid interrupted the scene and cramped my style). I am a “dyed in the wool” New Orleans Saints fan and have been since the “Bag Head Days”. Thank the Holy Saints for Drew Brees and Sean Peyton!

I love people watching, and not in a stalker kind of way. (Uh oh, cat out of the bag. Now all my friends and family are going to be wary of me when I’m sitting quietly in a corner and not saying anything, wondering if I’m sizing them up for my next villain and hoping they will be my next hero instead).

I love adventure and the opportunity to discover new worlds, whether it is through traveling to actual places or reading about them.

IF YOU COULD HANG OUT WITH ONE FAMOUS PERSON FOR ONE DAY, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Melissa McCarthy. I love her talent, sense of humor, and ability to make me laugh out loud. What a trip it would be to spend a day with her. What the world needs more of these days is laughter and a reason to laugh.

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR LATEST BOOK?

In 1999 a five-year old Cuban boy caused a tug of war between the United States and the Cuban government. All the boy’s mother wanted to do was find a better life for her child, but instead drowned off the shores of Florida in her quest. This left an orphaned boy in a foreign country in the custody of a great-uncle.

Cubans have been making this dangerous Gulf of Mexico crossing since 1959, but for some unknown reason to me I became almost obsessed to try to understand the reasons WHY?

In my hunt to mollify my curiosity, I read everything I could get my hands on about Cuba, its history, the culture, the people, but most of all Fidel Castro.

What I discovered was not just a ruthless dictator threatening to drop a bomb on our country, but also a very charismatic, fascinating, multi-faceted man. After reading about Fidel as a young college student, my opinion of him made an ever so slight shift away from the negative. Maybe, just maybe when he first started his quest to free Cuba from dictatorships, he was doing it for the right reasons. Unfortunately somewhere along the way he lost sight of that younger man’s motives.

With my research behind me I was compelled to write a historical fiction using actual events, but did it with a cast of characters all figments of my imagination. I was determined to pin down why he changed. What still remains an enigma to me is why he became the very thing he hated the most.

As fascinating as Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolutionaries were, I still needed to know why Cubans bailed out of their beloved country in droves. Thus Book II – SONS OF CUBA – HOMECOMING was penned – a fictional account of what one family’s experience must have been under the rule of a dictator they once placed all their hopes.

WHAT IS YOUR WRITING PROCESS?

I don’t have a writing process per se. Until twenty years ago I didn’t even know I had a book in me, much less the desire to write. With two books published now, I’m happy to say the third one will be released at the end of October 2020. Also exciting is I’ve just completed the first draft of the fourth book – SHATTERED LOYALTIES!

As I’ve “matured” (that’s a nice way of saying gotten a lot older), I have discovered a new side of me. Occasionally, there is a social issue or a particular news story that digs its claws into me and won’t let go. When that happens, for some unknown reason, I’ll jump in with both feet trying to make some sense of the situation or my imagination will take over and I start playing the “What If” game.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR MAIN CHARACTER

The story I’ve written about my main character, Felipe Cardena, illustrates both his dreams and unveils his inner demons. He deeply loves the women in his life. And when they are no longer in his life, often a gaping wound is left behind. He is well liked by his friends and supporters, and he always listens with an opened mind and heart – even though he often is very stubborn at times. Felipe Cardena becomes a man both loved and despised – he becomes the very thing he hated the most.

IF YOUR BOOK WAS TO BE TURNED INTO A MOVIE, WHO WOULD PLAY THE LEAD ROLE AND WHY?

Jimmy Smits. This actor fits all the personality traits I tried to encompass in my character Felipe Cardena – likeable, easy to fall in love with, tough when needed.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NEXT?

I’ve moved away from historical fiction and entered into the world of my true passion, the suspense/thriller genre. My next project is entitled INTO THE DEVIL’S DEN – SNARED BY THEIR OWN LIES.

The story weaves a tangled tale of a father caught in a twenty-year lie he told his daughter when she was only a child. Now his greatest fear is losing her trust forever. Before he can seek forgiveness, he must race against time to save her from a jihadist’s sleeper cell – leaving a trail of murder in his wake.

The goal is to have this book released by the end of October 2020.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WRITERS WHO WANT TO GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT THEIR BOOK?

I’m new at this game myself, so giving advice is not in my wheelhouse of knowledge. The one thing I’ve come to realize is that in today’s world most authors are left to their own devices when it comes to promoting your work. Not many of us have the time or the money to travel around the country promoting your book, much less the contacts or opportunity to be interviewed on national television.

Advice: Seek out every published author you know and pick their brains on the ways they promote their book. Hopefully your publisher or agent is helpful with this process, too.

When I discovered the opportunity for a Virtual Book Tour, I jumped in with both feet. My fingers are crossed that this may help me build a fan base for my books. (Definitely the most challenging hurtle to clear.)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK ON YOUR SHELF RIGHT NOW?

I cannot choose. My favorite is usually the most current suspense/thriller. For the last couple of years my favorite author has been Greg Iles. I’ve read almost every one of his books and loved each one equally, but I also like a good Steven King now and then, too. Don’t get me wrong I do not limit myself to a specific genre and am always open for a new experience and/or author when it comes to reading.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL/EXTRAORDINARY TALENTS?

Only in my dreams. Since I haven’t been blessed with a special/extraordinary talent, I have no idea what I would even choose.

YOU ARE GIVEN THE CHOICE OF ONE SUPER POWER. WHAT SUPER POWER WOULD YOU HAVE AND WHY?

If I had a super power it would the ability to fly and occasionally to be a fly on the wall. There is a world to be explored with so many diverse cultures, and inhabited by an endless supply of intriguing characters with fascinating stories to be told. What a treasure-trove for one’s imagination to sink their teeth into if given the opportunity.

LIST 5 THINGS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST:

At my age, I’ve completed most things on my bucket list. The five things left would probably be travel related:

To see the Egyptian Pyramids
Visit the Holy Land
Take a boat trip down the Amazon
Check out all the Scandinavian countries
Have a second home in the mountains.

VBT – THE CABINET

[image error]

The Cabinet

by Lindsay M. Chervinsky

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: History
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

The US Constitution never established a presidential cabinet―the delegates to the Constitutional Convention explicitly rejected the idea. So how did George Washington create one of the most powerful bodies in the federal government?

On November 26, 1791, George Washington convened his department secretaries―Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Henry Knox, and Edmund Randolph―for the first cabinet meeting. Why did he wait two and a half years into his presidency to call his cabinet? Because the US Constitution did not create or provide for such a body. Washington was on his own.

Faced with diplomatic crises, domestic insurrections, and constitutional challenges―and finding congressional help lacking―Washington decided he needed a group of advisors he could turn to. He modeled his new cabinet on the councils of war he had led as commander of the Continental Army. In the early days, the cabinet served at the president’s pleasure. Washington tinkered with its structure throughout his administration, at times calling regular meetings, at other times preferring written advice and individual discussions.

Lindsay M. Chervinsky reveals the far-reaching consequences of Washington’s choice. The tensions in the cabinet between Hamilton and Jefferson heightened partisanship and contributed to the development of the first party system. And as Washington faced an increasingly recalcitrant Congress, he came to treat the cabinet as a private advisory body to summon as needed, greatly expanding the role of the president and the executive branch.

EXCERPT

At eleven thirty in the morning on August 22, 1789, a large cream-colored coach pulled up to the front door of Federal Hall at 26 Wall Street in New York City. Six matching, perfectly groomed horses pulled the elegant carriage with sparkling gold trim. The coachman, outfitted in crisp white- and red-trimmed livery, jumped down from the back of the carriage and opened the door. An elegantly dressed man with powdered hair stepped down with a portfolio of papers under his arm. He towered over his companion, Henry Knox, the acting secretary of war, and his slaves tending to his horses. His ornate coach and his imposing presence drew curious stares from strangers passing by on the street. He walked up to the front door of Federal Hall and was immediately announced to the Senate. George Washington, the first president of the United States, had arrived for his first visit to the United States Senate.

This was no ordinary meeting. Two years earlier, the delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia had agreed that the Senate would “advise and consent” on treaties and other questions of foreign policy. But in practice, how the president and the Senate would interact remained for the first officeholders to work out….

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Lindsay M. Chervinsky, Ph.D. a historian of Early America, the presidency, and the government – especially the president’s cabinet. She shares her research by writing everything from op-eds to books, speaking on podcasts and other media, and teaching every kind of audience. She is Scholar-in-Residence at the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies and Senior Fellow at the International Center for Jefferson Studies. Previously, she worked as a historian at the White House Historical Association. She received her B.A. in history and political science from the George Washington University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis. She has been featured in the Law and History Review, the Journal of the Early Republic, TIME, and the Washington Post. Her new book, The Cabinet: George Washington and the Creation of an American Institution, was published by the Belknap Imprint of Harvard University Press on April 7, 2020.

The New Criterion recently said of her book, “Fantastic…Unlike many works of popular history, The Cabinet never feels like hagiography. It lacks the reverence of works like Joseph J. Ellis’ Founder Brothers or the revisionist obsequiousness that now greets Alexander Hamilton’s name on stage…Chervinsky exemplifies the public-history ethos in her new book. The writing is clear and concise…She takes what could have been a dry institutional and political history of the Early Republic and transforms it into a compelling story of people and places.”

When she isn’t writing, researching, or talking about history, she can be found hiking with her husband and American Foxhound, John Quincy Dog Adams (Quincy for short).

Q&A With…. Lindsay M. Chervinsky

Tell us about you as a person.

I’m an outgoing introvert and I’m completely obsessed with dogs. I will wrestle and snuggle with any dog on the floor and happily ignore the humans around. I love re-watching silly action movies. I hate being told what to do. If someone says “you MUST watch this show,” I resist mightily. But if someone just suggests it off-the-cuff, I’m much more likely to participate. Finally, I would happily live on bread, cheese, pasta, fruit, and dessert for the rest of my days.

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?

Alive or dead? Dead is easier: John Quincy Adams. He saw so much in his lifetime and had such extraordinarily expansive knowledge. Alive is a little bit harder. I think Madeleine Albright. Her life story is so fascinating and she accomplished so much, as both a refugee and a woman. I’d love to learn more about that.

What’s the story behind your latest book?

I couldn’t find anything to read about the creation of the cabinet and I wanted to know where it came from. I could find countless books about George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson, but they all treated the cabinet as inevitable. Because the cabinet wasn’t in the Constitution, I knew that wasn’t the case and I decided to answer that question.

What is your writing process?

For starters, I can’t have silence. Most of the time, I have an oldies playlist going (with everything from the 50s to the 80s). If I’m really struggling to focus and need to block out the lyrics, I’ll listen to French jazz, a Yo-Yo Ma playlist, or Salsa music. But I have to be using earbuds because something about the intensity of the music in my ears blocks out the rest of the world.

Before the pandemic, I preferred to write from home in the morning and then switch to a coffee shop in the afternoon. I tend to get sleepy after lunch, and the hustle and bustle of a shop helps me stay focused. Now that I’m home almost all the time, I’ll try and switch locations around the house. When that fails, I’ll take a nap and get a second wind around 4 or 4:30 and I’ll often write after dinner.

If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.

There have been lots of actors that have played George Washington, but I think Jeff Daniels is probably my favorite. Michael Douglas would have also been great when he was a bit younger.

What are you working on next?

I’m starting my second book, which compares John Adams and Thomas Jefferson’s cabinets. They are one of the worst and best, respectively, in American history and I’ve become complete fascinated by what cabinets reveal about the presidency and presidential leadership. All presidents have to deal with egos, ambition, and power struggles, so this story will definitely be relevant for the contemporary moment.

What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?

You have to be your own best advocate. No one else will do it for you. Don’t be afraid to ask to be on a podcast or have an event at a historic site or bookstore. You should do your research and make a compelling case for why your work would be a good fit, but the worst they can say is no. Also, be generous to others and they will return it to you.

What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?

The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes is my favorite recent fiction read. How the South Won the Civil War by Heather Cox Richardson was the last non-fiction book that really blew my socks off.

Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?

I feel pretty ordinary, but I guess I’m shockingly persistent. Which has positive benefits for my work, but also results in a dog who can do lots of tricks and an ability to frost cookies in absurdly complicated designs. Both took a lot of time and patience to master!

You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?

Apparition! My family and friends are all over the country and I wish I could just pop around see them without the wasted time and hassle of travel. I also love traveling abroad but get really bad jet lag, so if I could just zip to Paris in a moment, I’d be the happiest!

List 5 things on your bucket list:

Travel extensively: a few top choices include Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, and go back to Amsterdam
Learn to speak French
Hike Machu Picchu
Buy a house in the Shenandoah Valley
Make the New York Times Best Seller list

Any final thoughts?

Thanks so much to all of my readers’ support and encouragement during the book launch. Publishing my first book during the pandemic has been a bit of challenge, but I’m grateful for every sold copy, every reader, every kind note, and every review.
