From the Valley of Orchids Launch

Today’s the day! From the Valley of Orchids is now available to buy on Amazon. Volume one in the epic fantasy series The Legend of Saru, the eBook is only $0.99 / £0.99 for its entire launch week. Here’s the blurb:

Gods and Demons Clash in Mythological Japan

In the Kingdom of Yamato, magic is misunderstood. When humans pray at shrines to the spirits of the land, their wishes are not granted directly. Instead, sometimes gods are born: shapeshifting animals with the power to conjure wea...

Maps, Maps, Maps and More Maps!

Every good fantasy book needs a map, and From the Valley of Orchids has five.

Throughout the nine books in The Legend of Saru, you’ll explore all fifteen provinces of Yamato, from the sweltering Osumi in the south of Kyushu to the frozen northern plains of Ezo where the White City of Niseko looms:

The scrolls of the island names reference landmarks from the stories. In Ezo, you’ll see the swamp plants from the Rubythroat Fens and the Stone Pillars of Shakotan. Eas...

Writing Tips: Surviving the Skill Plateau

A remarkable thing happened while working on my latest novel, Grand Theft Octo. I wrote about 500 words that needed almost no editing whatsoever. Although I didn’t splurge them out in a carefree frenzy, I didn’t write them especially slowly either. They took about an hour. There were a few places where I had to ponder and a couple of lines that tripped me up but somehow I managed to write about 500 words that required almost no editing whatsoever in an hour. If you’re not a writer yourself, y...

Marc Crepeaux’s Video Review of Mervyn vs. Dennis

I’ve been a been a bad father lately. I’ve neglected my firstborn in favour of my latest offspring. Before you call child services, hear me out a second. I’m not talking about my daughters, but the other children in my life: my books, of course. I published my debut novel Mervyn vs. Dennis in 2016. Since then, a sapient talking Wotsit has moved into the White House and the United Kingdom has had a nervous breakdown. Undeterred by the apparent unravelling of civilised life as we know it, earl...

Grand Theft OctoGrand Theft Octo by Niels Saunders

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Grand Theft Octo is Elmore Leonard meets Carl Hiaasen!

Craziness is the foundation on which the mischievous novella, Grand Theft Octo, is built. From the first page, even to the last page, the reader is constantly being sprayed with a hypertonic mist of craziness.
. . .And I personally loved it.

In this f...
