Niels Saunders wrote his first book when he was sixteen and hasn't stopped since. Born in Cambridge, he grew up in Devon and has lived in Canterbury, Brighton and Tokyo. He loves to write in many genres including comedy, thriller and Japanese fairy tales. His short stories have been published in Ambit and Chapman magazines and he was awarded a distinction for the Creative and Critical Writing MA at the University of Sussex. When he's not writing or reading, you'll find him smoking meat, watching films or playing video games. To find out why he's holding a pineapple in his photo, you'll have to read his novel, Mervyn vs. Dennis.

For me, writer's block is an overwhelming sense of pointlessness. I used to misdiagnose it as self-doubt but I've lately become better at recognising it. What I have to do is rewind what I've written and try to pinpoint the moment where something went wrong. It's normally because I've forced a character to do something they don't want to do. Sometimes it's not clear what the solution is so I experiment or take a break and mull over the story and my character's motivations until I figure it out.(less)

It's like having new people enter your life, for better and worse. When I was young I used to draw but I always got got frustrated that the pictures I created never matched the ones in my head. With writing, though, it often turns out better. It's much more satisfying.(less)

The Papyrus Empire by Niels Saunders
"I read the other works of Niels Saunders, and enjoyed them quite a lot, so naturally I picked this one up as well. The basic idea is as brilliant as it is simple - guy gets some money from a cash machine, only the money he gets isn't the currency..." Read more of this review »

"This one is not like the author’s other two books. While it’s as well written and hard to put down, it’s far darker and without the fluffiness, leaving me feeling the same as when my cute little kitty comes for a cuddle with her claws out. While t..." Read more of this review »

“Life’s not a performance, it’s a dress rehearsal: people on an unfinished stage who don’t quite know what they’re doing, getting their lines wrong and never fully in character. Everyone’s an amateur, an understudy, we just get better at hiding it.”

"Sure was an interesting read. Would love to hear more about Tommy. A secret society within society. Not usually what I read, but couldn't put the book down. Loved it."

"Stealing was always my hobby. Now it's my profession.

Johnathan Doe is a con man. And a thief. And a liar. Don't trust him to water your plants while you're away. In fact, don't trust him at all.

The whole world's open for business. I only need to..." Read more of this review »
