RUNWAY REPORT.....Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week: Valentino Couture Fall 2017

WHAT: Valentino Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017. Creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli created an extraordinary collection, showing a full range from day wear to evening, full of  wonderful color (marshmallow, strawberry, banana, prune!) combinations, simple shapes belying very labor intensive handwork (most garments took 1,000+ hours to create...each!), inspired by the commonalities of the church and religion, and the art of Haute Couture....

  Paintings of Saints, Bishops by Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbaran

INSPIRATION: The Church meets Couture. The rituals of religion and its commonalities with the rituals of Haute Couture. It takes lots of time, effort and patience to create one-of-a-kind bespoke clothing and these handcrafting rituals resembled--to Pierpaolo Piccioli--the time-consuming rituals of The Church. In addition, the designer sought to be inspired by portraits of bishops, cardinals, nuns, saints from Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbaran.

  Couture Details: Feathers, cotton lace, mink, caviar beading, fringe bugle beads--Valentino Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017

DETAILS: Pleated skirt made out of strips of feathers(!); mink (!) coats; velvet intarsia, cashmere, brocades, chiffon plisse. Lots of monk-like capes, hoods, tent-like gowns.

RUNWAY REPORT.....Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week: Viktor & Rolf Couture Fall 2017

WHAT: Viktor & Rolf Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017. Dutch designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren went DOLL COUTURE with a collection that featured life size doll heads--a la Bratz Dolls. They, according to program notes, were the Viktor & Rolf mascots, "rooting for a world that is creative, diverse and eco-conscious". There were females, males, as well as big doll heads of every color. At the end of the show, the models took off the big doll heads and exposed their true identity. And lest you think it's all for show...the first look on the runway has already been sold.

Doll & Model: Viktor & Rolf Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017

RUNWAY REPORT.....Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week: Christian Dior Couture Fall 2017

This past week was Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week in where else? Paris, of course. Haute Couture is a rarefied art in the world of fashion. Here are some bullet points on Haute Couture...

The Scene at Christian Dior Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017 Show, Les Invalides Paris France

*Every item must be (almost all) handmade (some sewing is done with a sewing machine but a very small amount!);

*All items are custom ordered and made-to-measure to the client's needs and shapes (there are arguably only a small elite group of ladies--numbering in the low thousands-- in the entire world who are customers with Sheikha Mozah of Qatar being a very prominent and consistent one!);

*Prices are very hush-hush but a suit can set you back $45,000 to start and a gown, $100,000!);

*A LOT of Haute Couture is lent to celebrities to wear at big red carpet events, such as Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Awards. Since many of these design samples may not ever get produced...why not get good use out of them and have celebs wear them to promote the brand's lipstick and perfume!

To start off my Runway Report, I begin with DIOR:

  Le Bar Chic: Christian Dior Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017

WHAT: Christian Dior Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017. This was Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri's second Haute Couture collection for the famed Dior fashion house. Dior is celebrating 70 years in the fashion world with an incredible exhibition at the Louvre's  Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The Dior Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017 fashion show occurred at Les Invalides, the sight where Napoleon is entombed.

Christian Dior Couturier Du Reve Exhibition, Les Arts Decoratifs, Paris France--runs July 5, 2017-January 7, 2018

INSPIRATION: Travel. In the years following World War II, Christian Dior (the designer himself) traveled to California, Tokyo, South America, to name a few, to show his collections to the high society ladies of the world. As a result, Chiuri was inspired by this backdrop to create a collection inspired by Travel with names of outfits such as "Siam", "Oxford", "Austria", and "New York".

SEEN ON THE RUNWAY: Dior gray suits; Le Bar suit; daywear; velvet; patchwork; full-flared skirted suits, coats; light-as-air tulle nipped-in waist ball gowns.

FIDM.....FIDM Los Angeles Main Campus "3 Days of Fashion": BLOG RECAP!!!

It's 3 Days of FASHION!!--Nick Verreos onstage with model Amanda Fields Bennett wearing NIKOLAKI silk charmeuse and "feathered" taffeta gown--FIDM LA Main Campus "3 Days of Fashion" 2017

Time for the FINAL FIDM "3 Days of Fashion" for Summer 2017! In the past two weeks, I have had the pleasure of visiting the FIDM campuses throughout California for their annual "3 Days of Fashion" Summer Program--you can check out my BLOGS on those HERE for FIDM San Diego, HERE for FIDM OC in LA, and HERE for FIDM San Francisco. So now, it was time for my "Special Appearance" at the FIDM LA Main Campus "3 Days of Fashion"!

Onstage Nick: Nick Verreos--with "3 Days of Fashion" MC Andre Barnwell--FIDM LA Main Campus "3 Days of Fashion" 2017

Here are my photos from last week's FABULOUS and SUPER FUN FIDM "3 Days of fashion" 2017 including my "Special Appearance", a special Fashion Presentation of my NIKOLAKI gowns on models, plus a DAD CATWALK CONTEST (!) and a Meet & Greet after all the fun.

Let's start with that aforementioned "Dad Catwalk Contest":

The Dad Winners: Nick Verreos with the three finalists of the "Dad Catwalk Contest" atb FIDM LA Main campus "3 Days of Fashion" 2017.

Right as I got onstage to begin my "Special Appearance", I asked all the dads in the audience to come up onstage and then I surprised them (or shocked them, depending on who you speak to!) when I told them that they were to walk the "runway" for the FIDM 3 Days of Fashion Dad Catwalk Contest.

Runway Dads: Dads of students attending FIDM "3 Days of Fashion" doing their "catwalk"--FIDM LA Main Campus "3 Days of Fashion" 2017

They were all AMAZING and good sports about it (Thank Goodness no one got mad at me!), and in fact our top winning dad, really embraced the term "catwalk" when he literally got on the floor--on all fours--and began slithering like a cat--or Runway Panther! You can only imagine the reaction from the crowd--and especially his daughter! (she was snapping photos and filming video naturally!). I'm sure if you looked on Instagram long enough, you'll find the "blackmail" video :)--Now, let's get to the REAL models:

FIDM.....FIDM SAN FRANCISCO 3 Days of Fashion: BLOG RECAP of my Special Appearance!

Ready for SAN FRANCISCO!--Nick Verreos arrives at FIDM San Francisco campus for "3 Days of Fashion" 2017

Continuing with my FIDM "3 Days of Fashion" 2017 Appearances, now it's time for one of  MY FAVORITE CITIES IN THE WORLD: San Francisco! In case you missed my FIDM "3 Days of Fashion" blogs so far, click HERE for FIDM San Diego and HERE for FIDM OC. Soooo....yes, now I was off to San Francisco and the FIDM SF campus for their Final Day of the 3 Days Summer Program.

Yep, We're in SF!--Iconic San Francisco Cable Car, Union Square

My flight from LA was delayed by almost 2 hours (reason: Same ol'/Same ol' SFO fog excuses). After checking in to the iconic Sir Francis Drake Hotel , I had only 15 minutes to grab a lunch...

I HAD to Take a Pic!--Nick Verreos with Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel Bellhop

DELICIOUS & QUICK: Thank you to the FAB staff at Scala's Bistro (located right next to the Sir Francis Drake Hotel), they were able to cook up a Chicken Caesar Salad in no time. And upon leaving, the waitress-Meghan--left this lovely note on my tab: LOVE HER! I think she was a fan of Season 2 "Project Runway" ;)

After finishing my very quick lunch, I put my NIKOLAKI gowns in my big GUCCI duffel bag (packed very nicely by my better half, David Paul!) and head off to the FIDM San Francisco campus in Union Square. I was super excited to be at FIDM SF for their "3 Days of Fashion" to give my special lecture, show my NIKOLAKI designs and meet all the fabulous students! Before I got started, I wanted to know how many boys were in the audience (there were a lot!) so...naturally, I hosted a "Boy Catwalk Contest"! Obviously, because of the nature of the contest, you get a variety of "enthusiastic" and more often than not, timid and often shy participants, but...the guys at the FIDM SF "3 Days of Fashion" were AMAZING!!!!

My Catwalk Boys: Nick Verreos with the contestants of the FIDM San Francisco "3 Days of Fashion" Boy Catwalk Contest

In my many, many, MANY years of doing these events, this was THE BEST "Boy Catwalk Contest" EVER!!! The guys embraced it, brought their runway "A" game and some of them, even did death drops! The crowd LOVED it, the contestants were having a blast...and I just about started to cry when I saw how FABULOUS they all were! After their runway walks, I continued on with my special lecture as well as showed three of my NIKOLAKI designs and afterward, did a fun Meet & Greet Photo-taking session that lasted for over TWO HOURS!...

Here are Photos and I hope you enjoy!

NICK APPEARANCES.....Attending the LA Master Chorale Lux Aeterna Gala 2017: RECAP!

  Tuxedo Night: Nick Verreos on the red carpet of L.A. Master Chorale 20th Anniversary Lux Aeterna Gala 2017, Walt Disney Concert Hall Downtown L.A.

This past Sunday, my better half, David Paul, and I had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Gala of the L.A. Master Chorale 20th Anniversary Lux Aeterna. The Los Angeles Master Chorale is one of the country's leading professional choruses and one of Southern California's most vibrant cultural treasures. The 2017 Gala honored Morten Lauridsen and his beautiful requiem  Lux Aeterna .

L.A. Master Chorale 20th Anniversary Lux Aeterna Gala 2017 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Downtown Los Angeles

For this 20th Anniversary, Lux Aeterna was being performed for the first time at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in its original version for chorus and orchestra, along with other works closely associated with the artistry of the Los Angeles Master Chorale. The evening was MAGICAL and so MOVING...just beautiful!

In support of the L.A. Master Chorale and this year's Gala--as well as my friend Raymundo of course!--David and I donated THREE of our NV Nick Verreos  Contemporary Cocktail Dresses--which were sold at Lord & Taylor and Dillard's--as part of the Gala's Silent Auction...

NV Nick Verreos contemporary cocktail dresses at the Silent Auction of L.A. Master Chorale 20th Anniversary Lux Aeterna Gala 2017--Walt Disney Concert Hall

We didn't just donated the dresses but also offered them in many, many sizes (Sizes 2-XL!)--depending on whoever bid the most, and what size they wanted! Usually, when one sees a gown and/or dress in a Silent Auction, it's one size and the size being shown only, so...we wanted to make it as accessible as possible to the interested bidders.

I may design womenswear but I still LOVE menswear and will always support our FIDM graduates--especially those  taking Menswear to a more directional and inspirational level! CONGRATULATIONS to this year's Graduates!
