SASHES AND TIARAS.....BEST OF 2017: Best NATIONAL COSTUMES of 2017: My TOP 20 LIST!
The Best of the BEST: National Costumes from International Beauty Pageants during the past year of 2017 (L to R) Miss Earth Philippines; Miss Universe Japan; Miss Grand Indonesia; Miss Universe Thailand; and Miss Universe Venezuela.
It's that time again: Time for BEST OF Lists! Here, in my BLOG, I love discussing lots of my favorite subjects including Red Carpet Fashion "Who Wore What", Figure Skating Costumes "Ice Style" and Beauty Pageants "Sashes And Tiaras", of course so...for my first BEST OF 2017, I'm starting with my TOP 20 BEST NATIONAL COSTUMES of 2017 international beauty pageants. Almost all the top international beauty pageants had their own "National Costumes" competitions as seen in the Miss Universe, Miss Grand International, Miss Earth, Miss International and so on. Miss World has it's "Dances of the World" competition/segment showcasing the contestants in traditional dress doing dances related to their countries but, it really doesn't have a National Costume contest and since they are expected to dance in them the costumes tend to be less "dramatic"...
Costumes Sketches: (Clockwise from the top) Miss Grand Vietnam; Miss Universe Thailand; Miss Universe Myanmar; Miss Universe Singapore; Miss Grand Venezuela; and Miss Universe Guyana
After looking at many, many National Costumes from this year's international beauty pageants, Two things stood out this year: 1) Some pageants were stronger in terms of their National Costume offerings this year--particularly Miss Universe and Miss Grand International and 2) The contestants from Asia really brought their Costume "A" Game, continuing their trajectory of being super creative as well as super lavish in their designs, so Kudos to those designers taking this art to another level!
Let's take a look at some of my TOP 20 FAVORITES of 2017:
1. Miss Grand Indonesia 2017 Dea Goesti Rizkita-- This elaborate and very EXTRAORDINARY costume was my TOP Costume of 2017. All you have to do is look at the photos and you'll be like "Yep! Done & Done!". This costume, entitled "MOTHERLAND: The Sky is my Father, and The Earth is my Mother" and designed by Morphacio and Maya Ratih, has the meaning of a circular shape taken from the base form of the Moon and its about the mother figure, the queen, and the woman. It was THE BEST ONE of the Miss Grand International 2017 competition and now, my pick for Best of 2017. I loved how impacting it was; the colors, the unique shapes, gorgeous crystal and metallic artisanal craftsmanship...all of this combined made this design a work of fashion art!
Score: 9.99
No. 2: Miss Universe Japan Momoko Abe--Momoko's National Costume for Japan BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN when she debuted it at the Miss Universe 2017 Preliminary Competition. She wore a costume that started as a Ninja Warrior--all in black--which then (after a a slight tug-and-pull from her hand at the front of her top), quickly became a FABULOUS brightly printed Kimono Dress. I don't know how many times she had to practice that to get it right but, it was FLAWLESS and brought Oh-No-She-Didn't Oooh's & Ahhh's from the audience. Back when I first reviewed it, I thought it should win the Miss Universe 2017 "Best National Costume" prize and...IT DID! It was creative, definitely original in its transformation and still honored Japanese Traditional Dress--TWICE!
Score: 9.90
3. Miss Grand India Anukriti Gusain--Anukriti's gorgeous costume was my third favorite of 2017. The theme for this look was "Evolution and Expansion of Indian Royalty, from the Palace to the workplace". The national costume--designed by Melvyn Dominic Noronha--shows the balance of an Indian woman with her delicate beauty of compassion and the strength of her determination. I loved how this costume combined traditional Indian dress with Hindu God-like imagery as well as a wonderful tribute to Indian women. The costume was rich and regal, had a strong stage impact and was incredible in its silk, gold and hand-sewn embroidery.
Score: 9.80
4. Miss Grand Laos Chinnaly Norasing--I LOVED this "Temple" costume worn by Miss Grand Laos at the Miss Grand International 2017 beauty pageant. This national costume was inspired by the Great Golden Stupa Pha That Luang in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos. The Great Golden Stupa Pha That Luang is an ancient and important architecture of Laos, and a center for the spirit of the Lao people. The design of the costume is unique and definitely stage impacting! The jewelry in the costume was inspired by the shape of the Buddha image and the gold and red colors and various embellishments represent Lao's cultures, customs and unique identity. I thought it was thoroughly impacting, very striking and made for a stand-out costume presence at the Miss Grand International 2017 National Costume Competition. I am still so baffled how any of these costumes get packed and shipped through customs and onto a plane and then reassembled to be worn again!
Score: 9.75
5. Miss Earth Philippines Karen Ibasco-- During the Miss Earth 2017 National Costumes Competition, Karen won the "Gold Medal" (Best Costume) for Asia, and she got MY GOLD PRIZE for BEST COSTUME of all the contestants at Miss Earth 2017! Her costume was a Filipiniana Terno designed by Louis Pangilinan and simply put, it was EXTRAORDINARY! From the statement-making necklace, to the off-the-shoulder Mantilla top, to the fan, to the intricately designed and cross patterned multi-godet paneled Charles James-like crinoline gown-skirt, it was a WOW! Kudos to the designer and all the very talented artists and sewers who made this; this costume should be a museum of Miss Philippines National Costumes ASAP!
Score: 9. 75
6. Miss Universe Myanmar Zun Thansin-- There is always one--or two or three contestants that "Fall Out" with a SUPER OUTRAGEOUS national costume in these important international beauty pageants and for 2017, Miss Universe Myanmar takes this top title! Her costume was inspired by Hsaing Waing/Myanmar Traditional Orchestra, a musical ensemble only found in Myanmar and usually played in very formal ceremonies which is composed of 13 traditional musical instruments. Zun came onstage during the Miss Universe 2017 National Costumes Competition and carefully showed the audience how her costume was not just her dress but she BROUGHT THE STAGE with her! This was all designed by someone by the name (and title) of Dr. Thazin Khin...and God Bless Him!
Score: 9.70
7. Miss Universe Venezuela Keysi Sayago-- Venezuela's contestant, Keysi Sayago, wore one of my favorite National Costumes of the year at Miss Universe 2017. The costume, entitled "Venezuelan Warrior" included a metallic silver jumpsuit-like costume and a very glorious "wing" of the Venezuelan flag, It represented the brave Venezuelan women, described as one who rises to the adversity of the present and the future with great history in its sword (coat of arms), worthy thoughts in the present (Bolivar medal), and fair and balanced, intuitive and spiritual protector and above all free (colorful wings of the macaw). The costume (silver part) is made of mirror acrylics making it look like a metallic shell. The overall effect is this strong, powerful Venezuelan woman ready to fight whatever battles and hardships come her way. It was designed by Alejandro Fajardo who designed many of the GORGEOUS gowns seen at the Miss Venezuela 2017 Beauty Pageant .
Score: 9.65
8. Miss International Japan Natsuki Tsutsui-- Miss International Japan won the "Best Costume" and for my Best of 2017, she gets in at No. 8. I thought it was THE BEST of the Miss International 2017 Beauty Pageant for sure and therefore that award was well deserved. When she first walked out onto the stage in this, I just about fell off the couch and gave her (and whoever designed this) a standing ovation! This was a super-chic Haute Couture version of a Geisha Diva: There is just no other way to describe it! The silk satin organza padded striped coat, the emerald green and black gown, the glittering fringe...and then, there was her FABULOUS makeup and hair/headdress! This reminded me of a Christian Dior Haute Couture ensemble from the days of John Galliano.
Score: 9.55
9. Miss Grand Vietnam Huyen My Tran Nguyen--I absolute ADORED this costume worn by Miss Grand Vietnam 2017 Huyen My Tran Nguyen during the Miss Grand International 2017 Beauty Pageant. The costume represented a traditional Ao Dai and was inspired by the patterns of the Hue Imperial Citadel in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue. It took 3 months to create this gorgeous 30 kilograms (about 66 pounds!)-weighing costume and it was designed by Vietnamese designer Ngo Nhat Huy . This was one of the most outstanding representations of a "Traditional Dress" in international beauty pageants this past year.
Score: 9.60
10. Miss Universe Thailand Maria Poonlertlarp-- Making my Top 20 Best Costumes of 2017 at Number 10, it's Miss Universe Thailand: Maria's costume represents an ancient story depicting the existence of thunder and lightning. Designed by Prapakas Ansusingha --with the headdress created by Toi Marilyn--Maria is playing the God of Thunder and brought along a doll depicting the God of Lightning. The entire design is pretty spectacular, involving incredible fabrications, golden embroidery, a fabulous costume PLUS a lit-up doll! I love when the contestants put on a mini show, as part of their "National Costume" presentation. Bravo!
Score: 9.55
11. Miss Universe Vietnam Loan Nguyen-- This was my second most-liked National Costume from a representative of the Asian nation of Vietnam. Loan wore this brightly colored costume which uses the traditional Vietnamese Ao Dai dress as a starting base and then takes details such as the conical hats, fan, and color combinations inspired by local festivals. The costume was designed by Nguyen Huu Bihn and was VERY IMPRESSIVE.
Score: 9.50
12. Miss Universe Canada Lauren Howe-- Miss Universe Canada 2017 becomes my first North American contestant to make my Top 20 Best Costumes of 2017 in this gorgeous design. The very stage-impacting costume was inspired by the Canadian Rocky Mountains and features feathers, silver sequins and lights! I especially LOVE when a Beauty Pageant National Costume is a head-to-toe look and this was a perfect example: Notice the snow-like covered sequined shoes! Many times you have these contestants wear these outstanding costumes but then, they wear nude platform pumps from (name a shoe company): That's just lazy designing. But here, it was the opposite and I applaud it. The look, which was designed by Nicaraguan designer Bismarck Martinez, was entitled "Queen of Ice", and looking at the photos, she sure looks liked one!
Score: 9.48
13. Miss Universe Guatemala Isel Suniga-- Isel wore this costume for the Miss Universe 2017 National Costume Competition and it brought lots of "Oooh's & Ahhh's" from the audience in attendance for its colorful design and the fact that her back kite/wheel turned! The costume was inspired by a tradition in her country where people fly kites over cemeteries to promote peace and scare off evil spirits as well as the Festival de Sumpango/Festival de Barriletes Gigantes. This was quite fabuloso and once again, I was happy that it wasn't just one of those very popular "Pre-Columbian" costumes/Victoria's Secret Angel Costumes but the fact that her "wings"--i.e. kite--turned and she put on a mini show!
Score: 9.25
14. Miss Supranational Indonesia Karina "Nina" Nadila--This outstanding costume, designed by Jember Fashion Carnival, made No. 14 in my Top 20 Best of 2017 National Costumes List. The costume represents Lembuswana, a Mythological animal and a symbol of the power and sovereignty of a ruler. Headed lions and crowns symbolize the might of a king who is considered the ruler and the crown is a sign of the king's power which is considered a God. Her fierce wielding fangs flanking her trunk signifies the symbolic figure of Ganesha, the God of Intelligence. Winged Garuda with wings that can be moved as a symbol that wings ready to fly noble ideals sky-high and scaly fish which represents a protector and a leader among the people. The color of gold as the majesty and grey color as the color of the soil, symbolizes the attitude remains grounded and humble. I thought the overall design was SUPER fab and if I ever encountered a Lembuswana...I would be very, very afraid...but still probably would want to take a Selfie with it!
Score: 9.10
15. Miss Universe Costa Rica Elena Correa-- Elena's bright and bold feathered costume made No. 15 in my Top 20 Best of 2017 List because I thought it was one of the most grand and effective of the Latina American Pre-Columbian Empress costumes. The design celebrated Costa Rica's Pre-Columbian Gold Museum in the capital city, San Jose. This costume was designed by Nicaraguan designer Erick Bendaña and features golden peacock feathers and many, many crystals. This was probably THE MOST IMPRESSIVE of those very popular Pre-Columbian feathered costumes favored by the Latin American/Caribbean contestants; a STUNNER for sure!
Score: 9.15
16. Miss Universe Nicaragua Berenice Quezada: Designed by Jorge Salazar Caliz, this colorful costume is named "The Slopes of Volcano Mombacho" and because of its colorful, elaborately embroidered--and very festive!--design, I had to put it in my my Top 20 Best National Costumes of 2017. The area where this Nicaraguan volcano is located is one of the 78 protected areas in Nicaragua and served as the inspiration for this costume, showcasing the variety of flora, fauna and minerals that are abundant in the volcano's area. Mombacho has more than 700 different plants registered including many orchid species. It is a stunning work of costume delight!
Score: 9.00
17. Miss Supranational Thailand Gift Jiraprapa Boonnuang--Miss Supranational Thailand 2017's costume made my Top 20 List because it was a perfect vision of a traditional Thai Style Goddess. Thai Temple Goddess. I admired the intricately beaded and embroidered costume and especially loved how it was designed from head to toe. The sequined fabrication was beyond gorgeous and the style was Haute Couture beautiful, and that mini-temple headdress was exquisite! Oh, and yes, I also loved how even her shoes matched the entire costume.
Score: 8.99
18. Miss Earth Guatemala Maria Jose Castaneda: Guatemala does it again! Maria Jose's costume won the "Gold Medal" for Central and North America in terms of Best National Costumes at the Miss Earth 2017 National Costumes Competition and it was well deserved. This gorgeous creation was designed by Guatemalan designer Cesar Alejandro Portillo and he did an exceptional job with this look. I loved the fabric, colors, that amazing feathered headdress. It certainly was one of the most impressive costumes of the Miss Earth 2017 Beauty Pageant and in my eyes, had to be in my Top 20 Best National Costumes of 2017.
Score: 8.85
19. Miss Earth Nepal Rojina Shrestha: I was a big fan of this gorgeous costume worn by Miss Earth Nepal 2017 for many reasons: I loved the colors, stunning silk fabric and very impressive design. The mixing of the Sari with the Hindu gods imagery made this for a very regal looking costume.
Score: 8.50
20. Miss Universe Malaysia Samantha James: Last on my list, I wanted to add one of the most talked about National Costumes at the Miss Universe 2017 Beauty Pageant: Miss Universe Malaysia. The costume was inspired by A DISH--in fact, Nasi Lemak, the beloved national dish (usually served for breakfast) of Malaysia--featuring fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf. The dress designed by Brian Khoo and featured hand embroidered rhinestones to symbolize rice grains. On the left side of the dress, there are red rhinestones to symbolize the spicy sambal that accompanies each Nasi Lamak dish. The costume also included other accompaniments in Nasi Lamak such as sliced cucumbers, fried peanuts, anchovies and an egg! Just look at the close-up photo above of all the amazing sequin work! Speaking of work, the gown took 400 hours of craftsmanship and a month to make. While this costume wasn't as stage-impacting or National Costume Haute Couture impressive as some of the others (No lights!!?? No actual stage like "Miss Universe Myanmar" or costume change a la Miss Universe Japan??!!), it was memorable for its unique interpretation of a traditional dish.
Score: 8.40
Extra:
Miss Earth Belgium Lauralyn Vermeersch: I had to add Lauralyn's "French Fries" costume just because it was sooooo KOOKY! In case you are wondering, French Fries are actually from Belgium: Historians claim that potatoes were being fried, since the late 1600's (!), in Belgium. Soooo, yeah, that's Miss Earth Belgium's national costume: She was wearing a sack of fries. It wasn't traditional or National Costume Couture Fab but....it was kind of fun and original.

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Supranational 2017 Grand Finals: COSTUMES + Top 10 EVENING GOWNS RECAP!
And the Winner Is....--Outgoing Miss Supranational 2016 Srindhi Shetty holds hands with Miss Supranational Colombia Tica Martinez (Left) and Miss Supranational Korea Jenny Kim (R)--Miss supranational 2017 Grand Finals, Krynica-Zdroj, Poland
On Friday night, 65 contestants from all over the world competed in what was effectively the final TOP international beauty pageant of the "Pageant Season": Miss Supranational 2017 ...and the winner was...KOREA! Miss Supranational Korea, Jenny Kim made history by becoming her country's first winner of one of the top international beauty pageants. The Miss Supranational 2017 Grand Finals occurred in the Polish city of Krynica-Zdroj. with a population of only 11,000, it is known as Poland's biggest spa town and a popular winter sports/tourist destination.
First Ever--South Korea's Jenny Kim makes history in winning "Miss Supranational 2017" title, becoming the first woman from that nation to win a major international beauty title--Miss Supranational 2017 Grand Finals, Krynica-Zdroj, Poland
The South Korean 23-year-old beauty works as a model, stands 1.73 (5' 8") and works as a model and studies International Office Administration as well as the English Language (she speaks it fluently!) at Ewha Womans University in Seoul....
Jenny Kim, representing Korea at the Miss Universe 2016 Pageant (center and right photos)
Jenny is not a stranger to the pageant world, having competed for the Miss World Korea title in 2015, where she became the 1st runner-up, and she was last year's Miss Universe Korea, and got to represent her country in the Philippines at Miss Universe 2016 where she got the "Miss Congeniality" prize.
First Runner-up:
First Runner-up to Miss Supranational 2017 was Miss Supranational Colombia, Tica Martinez. Tica was the favorite to win among many pageant watchers and in the end, she almost got the top crown.
I am sure that I am not the first to say this and make this connection but...Tica is a DOPPELGANGER/Split-at-Birth/Sister-from-Another-Misters of....
Will The Real Tica...or Dremi-Leigh Stand Up?--The gorgeous Colombian beauty Tica Martinez (Left) could literally play the newly-crowned Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters (Right) in the Latina Telenovela version of her biopic!
Now that we've gotten that out of the way...time to discuss the National Costumes including the actual Winner of Best National Costume plus my Top Five other Favorites:
Best National Costume: The award went to Miss Supranational Panama Karol Dayana Batista. Her costume featured a gorgeous multicolored Bird of Paradise-meets-Victoria's Secret Angel. This style of costume is very popular and this was an exceptional one. I loved the gorgeous blue peacock and red rooster feathers and those sequined birds! The bodice and headdress were especially stunning and I have to say, I was very happy that EVERYTHING was thought of, including those sequined boots. Many times, these contestants have a costume just like this...but then end up wearing $29.00 nude platform pumps they bought online! Gracias a Dios Miss Supranational Panama DID NOT!
Here are my other FAVORITE National Costumes from Miss Supranational 2017 Grand Finals:
THAILAND: Miss Supranational Thailand Gift Jiraprapa Boonnuang--Thai Temple Goddess. Love the intricately beaded and embroidered costume worn by Miss Supranational Thailand. This was worthy of being in a Thai Culture Museum, if there is such a thing. Words that come to mind include: Gorgeous; National Costume Couture; Extravagant; Glorious. And once again, thank you for having the shoes be part of the entire look and not an after-thought!
KOREA: Miss Supranational Korea Jenny Kim--Jenny, who eventually won the top crown, wore another gorgeous and very rich-looking traditional costume. This Hanbok design is meant for Queens...Empresses...Princesses (take your pick!). The detail of the silk brocade and sequined embroidery...and the dragons on her arms and bodice: WOW! Oh, and then there was that stunning gold and jade crown!
VIETNAM: Miss Supranational Vietnam Khanh Phuong--This colorful Ao Dai worn by Miss Supranational Vietnam was one of my Top Favorite National Costumes of the pageant. I thought the design was very stage-impacting and runway fashionable. I loved the red with gold embroidered hem trim dramatic cape as well as the yellow/blue/red colors of the inner gown....and yes, THAT golden headdress was the "Cherry on the National Costume" cake!
POLAND: Miss Supranational Poland Paulina Maziarz: Pualina's costume celebrated Poland's Coat of Arms featuring the proud white eagle featuring a golden crown. I loved the depiction and design. I also thought her stage presentation was UBER effective. Probably THE BEST European National Costume of Miss Supranational 2017 in my eyes.
INDONESIA: Miss Supranational Indonesia Karina "Nina" Nadila--This outstanding costume, designed by Jember Fashion Carnival, represents the Lembuswana. Lembuswana is a Mythological animal and a symbol of the power and sovereignty of a ruler. Headed lions and crowns symbolize the might of a king who is considered the ruler and the crown is a sign of the king's power which is considered a God. Her fierce wielding fangs flanking her trunk signifies the symbolic figure of Ganesha, the God of Intelligence. Winged Garuda with wings that can be moved as a symbol that wings ready to fly noble ideals sky-high and scaly fish which means as a protector and a leader among the people. The color of gold as the majesty and grey color as the color of the soil, symbolizes the attitude remains grounded and humble. I thought the overall design was SUPER fab and if I ever encountered a Lembuswana...I would be very, very afraid...but still probably would want to take a Selfie with it!
OK, now to the MOST IMPORTANT PART of my BLOG: THE EVENING GOWNS!!! The Miss Supranational 2017 featured the contestants in several "rounds" of gowns. I'm just concentrating on my Top 3 Faves from the Eva Minge Fashion Show (Eva is one of Poland's most well-known fashion designers) featuring some of the Semifinalists, as well as the Top 10 Gowns, which all happened to be in the Silver/Ivory range.
Let's start with my Top Three of the Eva Minge Fashion Presentation:
1. THAILAND: Miss Supranational Thailand Gift Jiraprapa Boonnuang: Of all the gowns/designs from Polish designer Eva Minge, this simple and elegant black gown was the BEST and worn the best by the Thai contestant. The black fit-and-flare/mermaid gown fit well, was the correct length and perfect for a top-notch red carpet event. I also loved the front neck strap detail.
2. ETHIOPIA: Miss Supranational Bitaniya Yojef--Bitaniya looked like a QUEEN in this black and silver Eva Minge mermaid-shaped gown. The dress featured a strapless gown, very fitted body, ending in sequined-feathered-and-tulle bottom skirt. While she had trouble walking in this (who wouldn't??), she looked stunning. I also loved the non-"Pageant Betty" chic center parted hairstyle and minimal use of accessories.
3. INDONESIA: Miss Supranational Indonesia Karina "Nina" Nadila--I liked this nude-and-black tulle-and-sequined gown worn by Miss Supranational Indonesia. The criss-cross applique was an interesting detail and I also admired the textured fabrication. Karina was ready for a Ball in Poland in this Couture-like creation!
Time for my TOP TEN LIST of the Final Top 10 Semifinalist's Gowns--Beginning with my TOP BEST:
1. COLOMBIA: Miss Supranational Colombia Tica Martinez--This gown was my Top Favorite of the Miss Suprantaional 2017 Final evening gowns. Tica wore this silver-and-nude sequined design and it looked stunning on her! I loved the multi-layers of encrusted silver flower/icicle-like appliques and how they were sewn and placed on the body of the gown. I also admired the complete coverage with no Hoochie slit; she still looked sexy yet elegant. I also LOVED LOVED LOVED...the perfect length.
Score: 9.65
2. PHILIPPINES: Miss Supranational Chanel Olive Thomas--Chanel Olive Thomas wore one of the most elegant gowns of the night. The dress featured a fit-and-flare shape, gorgeous fabrication, heavily beaded bodice and interesting folded/draped side waist detail. It was very Haute in its minimal design accents. The gown did have a high side front slit which made it--for some reason--tricky for Chanel to walk in. Normally, this would be "like a Tuesday" for any other model/pageant contestant but for her, it was awkward. I overlooked this and scored her on this gorgeous gown design.
Score: 9.55
3. KOREA: Miss Supranational Korea Jenny Kim: Jenny wore my 3rd favorite gown of the Miss Supranational 2017 Finals. Hers featured a heavily sequined torso over nude tulle that ended in layers upon layers of tulle. The mermaid-shaped gown was stage-effective and looked pretty on Jenny, making her seem like an Ice Queen. I especially admired the different colored jeweled sequins in the gown.
Score: 9.15
4. ROMANIA: Miss Supranational Romania Bianca Tirsin: Bianca wore this silver sequined lace one shoulder gown. The dress fit her beautifully, had the perfect length and made her look like a top A-list actress at the Cannes Film Festival! Modern, elegant, fresh and Gown-chic.
Score: 9.05
5. COSTA RICA: Miss Supranational Costa Rica Nicole Menayo: Costa Rica's contestant wore this very interesting gown design. The dress had this GORGEOUS silver sequin and applique detail, that, alone, made me gasp for air, in a good way! The silhouette was also very nice, highlighting the contestant's sinewy shape. The only thing that bothered me was how scooped those side cut-out's were.; they were dangerously low. But, she was SUPER SEXY. I would have loved this look better if A) The side peek-a-boo's weren't so low, and B) if she might have worn her hair up in a bun, exposing more of the gown's shoulder detail. And the way she wore her sash was ridiculous and distracting.
Score: 9.00
6. THAILAND: Miss Supranational Thailand Gift Jiraprapa Boonnuang--Miss Supranational Thailand wore this ivory-and-nude sequined gown for the Miss Supranational 2017 Finals. The gown was stunning and very expensive-looking. I appreciated all that hand-sewn pearl and rhinestone embroidery. The way the sequins were laid out was also quite fabulous and the fit was great...except for the fact that for some reason, her left shoulder was askew and not on her shoulder. I'm not sure if that was on purpose but it was noticeable; all I wanted to do was go up there and lift it up and place it properly on her shoulder!
Score: 8.99
7. PUERTO RICO: Miss Supranational Puerto Rico Larisssa Santiago--Larissa wore this silver/white mermaid shaped gown which featured a halter neckline, silver sequined embroidery and tulle bottom skirt section The fit and length were very nice and the style was complimentary to the contestant's body. There was nothing Haute or extraordinary in terms of design; it was just nice and pretty.
Score: 8.35
8. POLAND: Miss Supranational Poland Paulina Maziarz: Poland's contestant wore this white gown which featured a one shoulder sleeve design, sequined detail and side front slit. The dress and design were very "Pageant Gown 101" but...done in a beautiful manner. Paulina had probably THE BEST BODY in the entire pageant and the fit of the gown was right but somehow she still had trouble walking in this gown (juts like several others, including Miss Supranational Philippines Chanel Olive Thomas). Other than that, this was a nice, acceptable gown.
Score: 8.25
9. ETHIOPIA: Miss Supranational Ethiopia Bitaniya Yosef--Bitaniya wore this white-and-silver gown which featured a center front panel of silver paillettes set against a solid white georgette fabrication. The dress was nice but compared to some of the others, it was very "Pageant Basic". Bitaniya, however, made it work since she was one of the PRETTIEST contestants in the entire pageant! But there is one thing I cannot forgive: Those AWFUL super high "stripper" platform pumps...and the fact that I could see them. Bitaniya (I hope you're reading this!): please NEVER WEAR THESE AGAIN; you are too "runway fab" to be wearing such tacky shoes.
Score: 7.99
Lastly...
10. PORTUGAL: Miss Supranational Portugal Priscila Alves--Last on my list is Miss Supranational Portugal. Now, part of me got a little excited when I saw her enter the stage in this CRAY-CRAY "White Walkers/Game of Thrones"-looking Ballgown. The SUPERGAY in me was like "You Go Girl!" but...the logical Fashion Designer/Commentator was more "Oh No She Didn't!'. While I admire the "She Went there" aspect of this gown, it was still A LOT of CRAY CRAY! The top section alone looked like one of those aluminum foil wrapped things you get when taking food To-Go:
Score: 7.75

ICE STYLE.....SKATE AMERICA 2017 Costumes: PAIRS & ICE DANCE
Cha Cha Canada: Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Canada after finishing their Short Dance--2017 Bridgestone Skate America, Lake Placid NY
Time for the third and final 2017 Skate America Costumes Blog: The PAIRS and ICE DANCE. If you missed my "Ice Style" blogs on the LADIES, click HERE...and for the MEN, click HERE, but now, let's begin with the PAIRS...WARNING: Costume Changes Ahead!
PAIRS:
Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier of USA: Denney and Frazier skated their Short Program All Of Me by John Stephens, Toby Gad performed by John Legend in these lovely costumes above. I liked the matchy-matchy color story between the two; her vanilla cream costume matched his tuck-pleated-and-French-cuffed tuxedo shirt. Her sequined look was Figure Skating Traditional but totally on-trend--if by that I mean, her top section reminded me of all those "nude gowns" being favored by Beauty Queens of late (read my "Miss Universe" Evening Gown review HERE and you'll understand!).
Free Skate to Who Wants to Live Forever by Brian May, performed by Queen & David Garrett--For their Free Skate, they wore these costumes above at Skate America 2017. The color story was deep indigo blue with hints of red. I thought these were quite modern and directional--especially when compared to their Short program costumes which veered on the traditional. I especially liked the asymmetrical long-ish top and how it really made for a perfect "Male Costume Bookend" to her look. In case you are paying attention to this season's Grand Prix, you might have realized that these looks above were a Costume Change from what they wore at the 2017 Skate Canada International for the same Free Skate:
Jumpsuit Diva and Sparkle Brandon--OK, I'm going to be honest here: I kind of liked the all black "Jumpsuit & Sparkle" Denney and Frazier. Maybe I've been watching one too many Mae Berenice Meite and old Carolina Kostner videos but....I think I like these more. Am I crazy? (Don't answer that!)
Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford of Canada: Duhamel and Radford of Canada skated their Short Program to With Or Without You by U2 performed by April Meservy wearing these blue and black costumes above. Meagan's look featured a sheer tank with deep blue lace overlay including delicate silver beading. I thought she looked pretty, sexy and modern. Eric looked sleek and fab in his matching deep blue top that had delicate rhinestone details at the collar, shoulder and sleeve bands. Oh, and yes, he wore a pair of nice super-tight black pants. This, my dear figure skating fans was a COSTUME CHANGE from what they last wore at Skate Canada International 2017 for the Short Program (and I am happy they changed! Thank you and Merci Meagan and Eric):
2017 Skate Canada Short Program Costumes--I wasn't so sure about Meagan's odd waistband and "V"-like sequins #JustSaying
Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot of Germany--Free Skate to La Terre vue du ciel by Armand Amar, edited by Maxime Rodriguez: For their Free Skate, the German Pairs couple of Savchenko and Massot wore these lilac-hued costumes above. I LOVED Aliona's white-and-lilac ombre dyed costume which featured gathered upper torso and a sequined neckband. The costume also had a center front nude illusion panel and diamante-studded waistband. Bruno matched her costume with his top. This was a COSTUME CHANGE from what they last wore for their Free Skate at the 2017 Skate Canada International:
It was a costume change for her and not for Bruno. I have to say that I like both looks on her. What do you guys think?
Now, time for ICE DANCE:
Kana Muramoto and Chris Reed of Japan: Short Dance to Cha Cha: I Like It Like That by Pete Rodriguez; Rhumba: Mondo Bongo by Joe Strummer; Samba: Batucada de Sambrasil by Estudios Talkback--I have no idea who designs their costumes but I like them! These looks were fun, sassy and "Carnival" fab. I loved the goldenrod/fuchsia and black colors and especially her multi-fringed skirt. I especially liked how the tips of the fringe were dip-dyed black; she looked like a glorious Samba Bird of Paradise!
Free Skate to The Last Emperor (soundtrack) and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence by Ruyichi Sakamoto--These Free Dance costumes were pretty, elegant and right for that beautiful Ruyichi Sakamoto music. There were hints of Geisha Fab in her pink flower applique costume and I also liked his gray chiffon draped top. I wished there were tiny pink details on his look to bring him back to her but other than that, these were nice costumes.
Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy: Cappellini and Lanotte skated their fun Short Dance to Cha Cha: Kaboom performed by Ursula 1000; Samba: Skip to the Bip performed by Club des Belugas; and Samba: 1008 Samba. While most of the Ice Dance men are utilizing this Samba/Rhumba/Cha-Cha Shorty Dance to be Muy Caliente Sexy Hot with their costumes (sheer, plunging and tighter!) here, while still super tight fitting, Luca is all covered up...and in all black! I get that Anna's fuchsia-and-silver colored costume makes a bold color statement alone but still, I just wish he didn't look like a valet about to take my car away. Her costume, on the other hand, is one of my favorites of the season: It is spectacular with the crystal beaded bodice and fuchsia ruffled skirt that is just the right length for her teeny tiny frame. In a way, by making him fade away, it highlighted her even more...which was probably the point!
Free Dance to Biongiorno Principessa (from "La Vita e Bella" soundtrack), Life Is Beautiful (from "La Vita e Bella" soundtrack) by Nicola Piovani, arranged & performed by Mi Loco Tango, and La Vita e Bella (from "La Vita e Bella" soundtrack) by Nicola Piovani arranged by Claudio Mandonico. Cappellini and Lanotte are known for their very Italy-centric Ice dances and this Olympic Season was no exception for their Free Dance. She wore an ivory colored dress with beaded top section and nude illusion neckline. I thought she looked quite Mumsy and matronly. I did like Luca's high-waisted pants-and-shirt costume. The pants were super tight which was a good thing, but the colors were SOOOOO drab. I get the whole We're-Italian-peasants-dancing-up-a-storm theme but still, I wish they didn't look so sad and uninspiring.
Maia and Alex Shibutani of USA: How do you say AMAZING in Ice Dance?? The Shibutanis, that's how! I LOVED their Short Dance to Mambo: Mambo No. 5 by Perez Prado; Cha Cha: Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White by Perez Prado and Samba: Mambo Jumbo/Mambo No. 8 by Perez Prado, and I especially ADORED their costumes. These were BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO! They looked so fabulous, I almost wanted to jump through the TV and do Twizzles with them (OK, maybe not!). I thought her bubblegum pink with gold and silver crystals dress was A STUNNER. And Alex was no Costume Chopped Liver: I thought his nude bedazzled shirt with black pants look was sexy and a perfect costume partner to her colorful eye candy costume.
Free Dance to Paradise by Coldplay: For their Free Dance, they went much more subdued--keeping in mind their emotional and modern music. I liked the red and black colors and I especially liked her softly draped chiffon dress featuring subtle hints of ombre dying. I also appreciated how his shirt perfectly matched her dress coloring. This might not have been as impressive as their Short Dance costumes but they were quietly beautiful and appropriate for this Free Dance.
Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Canada: Gilles and Poirier of Canada wore these costumes for their Short Dance to Bossa Nova: Bossa Cubana and Mambo: Gopher Mambo. Piper wore an aquamarine and black Devore velvet-like dress with an open back and GORGEOUS gold jeweled sequins on her upper torso. And Paul...well, he started with black pants and sequined black top but then...halfway through their skate, she ripped his sleeves, revealing Cha-Cha ruffles of a similar fabrication to her dress. While it was gimmicky, I liked it! He definitely needed a style element of fun and the ruffles did it. The costumes above, were somewhat of a COSTUME CHANGE...Let me show you:
The top photo (out of these three above) shows his "New" costume, as opposed to the lower two photos (which are from the last time they skated at the Rostelecom Cup of Russia 2017 ). Notice that they added sequins to his neckline AND his tiered ruffles got a color "upgrade". Back when I saw the first version of his look, I thought he needed more color...and I guess, they A) either read my blog; or B) they realized this all on their own!
Free Dance to Stolen Hearts, Perry Mason Theme by Fred Steiner, Smokey Sax Perry, Mason Theme by Fred Steiner: For their Free Dance, the Canadian Ice Dance couple wore these black costumes above. Piper's featured a "plunging" neckline (covered in illusion of course), open sides and a fishtail hem dress/skirt hem. Paul was in a skin tight black turtleneck , black pants and a "police badge" accessory at the waist. These were a COSTUME CHANGE from what they last wore--also at the 2017 Rostelecom Cup of Russia...and HINT: I was not a fan...
This is what I said in my blog then: "I love this pair and hope somebody rescues them from these costumes. Please change this ASAP!"...And Merci and Thank You, because I guess someone heard my Costume Pleas!

ICE STYLE.....SKATE AMERICA 2017 COSTUMES: MEN
Adam Rippon of the USA, after skating his Short Program--Bridgestone Skate America 2017 Lake Placid NY
In my last ICE STYLE post HERE, I discussed the LADIES COSTUMES from the 2017 Skate America Grand Prix of Figure Skating, so now it's time for the MEN. Let's begin with Israel's Daniel Samohin:
Daniel Samohin of Israel: Daniel skated his Short Program to It's a Man's Man's Man's World performed by Seal wearing this all black look. The costume featured black pants, a long black shirt with sheer sleeves and a sequined top underneath. I liked the peek-a-boo element of seeing some fab sparkles coming from his chest; this gave a nice stage-impacting element and added to the overall image of Seal performing the song on a big international stage.
Free Skate to Two Angels by Sergei Erdenko performed by Loyko--First, I have to explain (in case you weren't watching Skate America 2017 like I was!): The reason Daniel is holding his shoulder and looking so distraught in the above photos is because he was taken to a local hospital after dislocating his left shoulder in a fall during his free skate on Saturday. Samohin skated off the ice by himself, holding the shoulder, and walked out of the competition area. We all hope he is OK. Now, back to his costume: I liked it. He wore a white and purple top with blouson sleeves featuring crystals and an ombre-like coloring. His pants were a deep hue of the color on his top. This is really a great costume and I look forward to seeing it and Daniel back on ice soon.
Liam Firus of Canada: Canada's Liam Firus skated his Short Program Happy Ending by Mika wearing this blue shirt-and-pants costume above. I liked the "Acid wash" dyed look of his shirt (soooo 1992!) and uniquely placed flower/peacock feather-like embroidery.
Ross Miner Short Program: Cosmic Superhero by Bart van Wissen, Magic Cure by Inkmash, and Downtown by Macklemore, Ryan Lewis feat. Eric Nally--Ross Miner skated his Short Program in this all black costume. the look featured a faux leather-like shiny shirt with studded shoulders, matte black pants, metallic belt. I liked all of it, especially the great studded shoulder detail (smart to have detail up there since the cameras would be focusing a lot in the upper torso). I also was happy that he didn't wear a "Ross Dress For Less" 90's belt and instead, wore something that almost looked as if it was actually DESIGNED (what a novel idea!) for the costume! Thank you Ross.
Sergei Voronov of Russia: Sergei skated his Short Program to Adios Nonino by Astor Piazzolla. This is a Tango and therefore, I assume Sergei was going for a "Modern Tango" look with his red and black costume. The top was a bit odd with the different panels and I was especially confused about the nude-like ones. Was this supposed to be skin-colored illusion? And if so, why the odd placements in the midriff and neck area? He looked a little more "Tron" than Tango.
Takahito Mura of Japan: Mura skated his Short Program to Farrucas--Zapateado (Flamenco) wearing this black/silver/gray top and black pants costume. The top had lace sequined fabric and big red satin rosettes as details. I get how he was trying to go for a Spanish Flamenco dancer in this. But, the top just seemed a bit unrefined in its design. This costume--by the way--was a Costume Change, from what he wore last time at Skate Canada International 2017:
Ruffles and Fringe: So....which costume do we like better?
Free Skate to The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber--For his Free Skate, Takahito brought back (Groundhog's Day!) his program from the 2014-2015 Season but...it was a different cut of music (well, at least, there's that!) AND this old-but-new program was choreographed by none other than Charlie White! In terms of his costume, he wore this part black/part Cabernet red jacket look with heavily studded lapel, a red chest pocket hankie and black gloves. Mura, once again, took it into a Too Mucheey Costume Level. I get the "Phantom" reference, but it was all a bit too kitschy for my taste.
Nathan Chen of USA: I really, really...REALLY hope that his real costumes are STILL NOT READY and we will see SOMETHING for the Grand Prix Finals because these are...The "Ross Dress For Less"/Server-at-a-Restaurant Nathan Chen Costumes Edition.
On the left is the black dress shirt and pants look he wore as his "costume" for his Short Program to Nemesis by Benjamin Clementine. I get that the music is sweeping, jazzy, modern...so a sleek all black costume is appropriate but...THIS? Nathan looks like he is making drinks at a local bar in Lake Placid. And for his...
Free Skate to Mao's Last Dancer (soundtrack) by Christopher Gordon (right), he decided to give the all black shirt-and-pants outfit a color change...into blue! There's really nothing to discuss since THERE IS NOTHING HERE except that he still looks like part of the waitstaff of a restaurant/bar.
Adam Rippon of USA: Adam wore this Rock & Roll flashy look above for his Short Program to Let Me Think About It (Eddie Thoneick Remix) performed by Ida Carr feat. Fedde Le Grand. I LOVED IT! Adam has been on a costume roll wearing SUPER TIGHT sexy tops with plunging necklines and see-through fabrications, and I am a big fan! A) Adam is lean as a toothpick so...he can do it! And B) It's refreshing to see something that is fun, flashy and NOT an all black boring look straight out of a department store. I really like the faux leather panels and the rhinestones accenting the top. Throw in that center front zipper and sheer stretch chiffon and Adam is ready to hit the dance floor! All that's missing is a FAB disco ball.
Free Skate to Arrival of the Birds ("Crimson Wing" soundtrack) by The Cinematic Orchestra
O by Coldplay--This is the same program music from last season but Thank Goodness, it was a different costume. Not that I didn't like last season's costume but THIS IS GORGEOUS! The look--designed by Veretto Sport and designer Braden Overett --included blue skin tight pants and a second-skin sequined top. That top was OUTSTANDING--like Figure Skating Haute Couture! There were hints of the sky and bird's wings (to go along with the music) but not so obvious like last season's feathered costume. #Love

ICE STYLE.....SKATE AMERICA 2017 COSTUMES: LADIES
Satine on Ice: Ashley Wagner and her new costume for her "Moulin Rouge" Free Skate--2017 Skate America, Lake Placid NY
This past weekend was the 2017 Skate America , the sixth and last ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating event/competition leading up to the Grand Prix Finals which take place December 7-10th in Nagoya Japan. I have already discussed many of the costumes from past Grand Prix this season, including Skate Canada International , Rostelecom Cup of Russia , Cup of China , NHK Trophy and the Internationaux de France Grand Prix of France . You can also search my blogs here under "Ice Style"...
Bridgestone Skate America 2017, Lake Placid NY
But for now, it's about Skate America starting with the LADIES. Let's discuss the NEW COSTUMES, Changed Programs & Switch-a-Roo Costumes and a lovely skater whose costumes I haven't discussed: Bradie Tennell. First, let's discuss Miss "I'll Just Keep Everyone Guessing What My Short and Free Skate Programs Are" Karen Chen...
Karen Chen of USA: Karen loves to keep people guessing to what her Short and Free Skates are for this season and in fact, she's changed them over the course of this year's Grand Prix. For 2017 Skate America, she's gone back to the same programs/music (and costumes) from last season. First, (Left photo) her (old is new again) Short Program to On Golden Pond (soundtrack) by Dave Grusin, she wore this same costume from last season. Back then when I first saw Karen in this, I thought that she was skating to "Swan Lake", "Black Swan" or "Nutcracker". But no kids: She skated to "On Golden Pond"--in this! And I LOVED it. It was pretty, well made and exquisitely sequined, down to her fingertips. Gorgeous!
For her (Right photo) Free Skate to Jalousie "Tango Tzigane" by Jacob Gade, I also loved it then and still holds up now. This was another very good costume for her. The silver and red crystals were beautiful and the scroll-like torso detail was very pretty. The entire costume package was up to international competition levels so I guess why not keep wearing it. But...I just wished she would have NEW costumes. I don't mind the same old/same old programs, I just want to see some semblance of NEW!
These costumes above are what she last wore for her Short Program to El Tango de Rozanne (from "Moulin Rouge!") (I know it's THE SAME costume as her current Free Skate to Tango Jalousie by Jacob Gade). And the blue on on the right was from her "old" Free Skate to Slow Dancing in the Big City (soundtrack) by Bill Conti.
Kaori Sakamoto of Japan: Kaori skated her Short Program to Moonlight Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven and wore this blue ombre-dyed costume on the left. The design featured a gathered one shoulder-like design plus lots of silver sequins throughout the garment. It was pretty and expensive-looking.
Free Skate to Amelie (soundtrack) by Yann Tiersen: For her Free Skate to "Amelie" she wore this olive-colored design on the right photo. It was drab as drab can be. I get the connection to "Amelie" with the color and mini "Peter Pan" collar but this just didn't have enough of that figure skating costume "razzle dazzle" needed to make an impact. And I don't think I need to remind anyone that this is one of the most unflattering colors one could possibly choose. It was SAD; she looked like she was playing a refugee from a war-torn land. Well, at least she looked like a very cute refugee.
Satoko Miyahara of Japan: Japan's Satoko Miyahara wore this pink costume for her Short Program to Memoirs of a Geisha (soundtrack) by John Williams seen on the left photo. It was quite delicate, subdued and pretty. There weren't any overt hints of a Geisha or Kimono. What we did see was a powder pink costume with beautiful petal-like silver rhinestones and dégradé pink skirt.
For her Free Skate to Madame Butterfly Act 3, Goro's Entrance (Madame Butterfly Act 2) and Butterfly Bids Her Child Farewell (Madame Butterfly Act 2) by Giacomo Puccini--Satoko continued with her Japan-centric music for her programs, wearing this blue design for her "Madame Butterfly" Free Skate (right photo). Once again, this wasn't in the "Alena Leonova" in-your-face/obvious in terms of an "ethnic" costume look; instead it was a figure skating costume "interpretation". This blue costume featured solid stretch Lycra jersey as well as nude illusion, beautifully sequined, giving a hint of a delicate Kimono-like robe. Overall, both were very pretty. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be the Short program one.
Bradie Tennell of USA: Bradie skated her Short Program to Taeguki by Lee Dong-Jun. The music comes from the movie of the same name, which is about two brothers who are forcibly drafted into the South Korean army at the outbreak of the Korean War. Her costume has hints of the Korean Hanbok...
With the delicate crystal embellishment and folded overbust/neckline detail. I also thought the nude illusion back with the gorgeous sequined applique was pretty:
For her Free Skate...
To Cinderella Medley by Patrick Doyle--Bradie wore this very pretty aqua blue costume worthy of an Ice Queen Cinderella! The costume tried to give the look of a strapless ball gown with the sequined applique that stopped right at the overbust, but then had nude illusion covering the shoulders and upper torso. I also liked the delicate sprinkling of rhinestones on her arms. But my favorite part was the almost-miss-it-if-you-blink crown.
Ashley Wagner of USA: Short Program to Hip Hip Chin Chin performed by Club des Belugas. For Ashley's Short Program, she finally debuted her new costume for this same old/same old program! Now, I know that it takes a lot of time to make a custom figure skating costume but I'm still a bit perplexed at how it wasn't until now that it was revealed. Well, better late than never--or "Better late than until US Nationals next month!". Anyhow...this new costume for this program was FABULOUS! I loved the red/purple/gold colors, the asymmetrical hemline and especially the unique sequin applique on the upper torso. It was chic, stage-impacting and wise to highlight Ashley's AMAZING shoulders and arms with the halter neckline. This drab thing is what she wore last time:
And Thank the Figure Skating Costume Gods...that it was just a "temporary" look.
Free Skate to Diamonds, One Day I'll Fly Away, and The Show Must Go On (from "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack)--Ashley also debuted this new costume for her "Moulin Rouge" program at this past weekend's 2017 Skate America, and my Costume Verdict is....I LOVE IT!!! THIS is the Satine I wanted: Gorgeous, chic, costume fab! This golden/blush design pays homage to Nicole Kidman's corseted costume in the film but has enough original touches to make it distinctive and figure skating costume effective. The "necklace" rhinestones are gorgeous but I especially LOVE the gold-and-silver encrusted crystals highlighting the bodice and strap detail. So HAPPY that there is a new costume because I was a bit costume-skeptical of this last design she wore:
While it was nice and pretty, it lacked the Skating Couture design fabulousness Ashley deserves. Let's just hope she feels better and is up to speed for January's U.S. Nationals. Especially since I will be there to watch LIVE!

SASHES AND TIARAS.....MISS UNIVERSE 2017 Finals: Winner + Top 10 EVENING GOWNS RECAP!
South Africa Wins!--Outgoing Miss Universe 2016 from France Iris Mittenaere crowns Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters Miss Universe South Africa with the Mikimoto crown that had been the crown years back for Miss Universe--Miss Universe 2017 Finals, The AXIS Theater Planet Hollywood Las Vegas
Ninety-two contestants from all over the world competed for the 66th Miss Universe...and the Winner was...South Africa! Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters , 22, who represented South Africa, bested 91 other contestants to win the top beauty pageant crown of Miss Universe. Demi-Leigh--who stands 5'7" (1.70 m) tall--has a degree in business management, speaks fluent English and Afrikaans, and is a model and credits her half-sister Franje who has a physical disability as her most significant motivator.
Top Knot Queen: Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters Miss Universe South Africa wins Miss Universe 2017 title--Miss Universe 2017 Finals, The AXIS Theater Planet Hollywood Las Vegas
As the winner of Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh was given the right to compete in both the Miss Universe and Miss World Beauty Pageants as part of her win, however, the organizers decided to send her to Miss Universe and her First Runner-up to the Miss World Beauty Pageant, supposedly because of time restraints, since both pageants were occurring very close time-wise. Good thing they sent her to Miss Universe since...SHE WON!
Winning Beauty: Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters Miss Universe South Africa is Miss Universe 2017--Miss Universe 2017 Finals, The AXIS Theater Planet Hollywood Las Vegas
The South African beauty was always a top favorite--in fact, THE FAVORITE!--to win so it came as no surprise that she got the crown. She happens to be the second South African beauty to win Miss Universe, following Margaret Gardiner's win as Miss Universe 1978.
Cocktails and Swimsuit South Africa: Miss Universe South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, in Introduction Cocktail Wear and Swimsuit--Miss Universe 2017 Finals, The AXIS Theater Planet Hollywood Las Vegas
This year's Miss Universe Pageant was special because I actually GOT TO ATTEND IT! This marks my fourth (or fifth, I forget!) time I have had the chance to attend a Miss Universe Pageant LIVE. It's always nice when it's close to home...
Ready to Go See Miss Universe!--Nick Verreos and David Paul--The Aria Resort & Casino Las Vegas
Since I live in Los Angeles, Las Vegas wasn't as far away as say, Manila Philippines! I went with my NIKOLAKI partner David Paul and bought seats that were very close to the stage so we did get a chance to see the gowns as close as one can--when sitting in the audience, that is!
View of the stage from our seats--The AXIS Theater, Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino Las Vegas
Miss Universe 2017 Finals, The AXIS Theater Planet Hollywood Las Vegas
Before I discuss my PICKS for BEST GOWNS of the Top TEN Semi-finalists...let's give a big SHOUT-OUT to the WINNER of BEST NATIONAL COSTUME!!! (HINT: She was MY PICK for BEST COSTUME which you can read HERE!):
JAPAN!! Thank the Costume Gods/Judges! Miss Universe Japan won the BEST NATIONAL COSTUME and it was well deserved. I loved this costume and said as much when I reviewed the Miss Universe 2017 National Costumes. The costume starts as a FIERCE Ninja warrior and then--with a flip of a hand--turns into a GLORIOUS printed Geisha Kimono Diva!--Miss Universe 2017 Finals, The AXIS Theater Planet Hollywood Las Vegas
Now...time to BOW DOWN to Iris and her Gown COUTURE!
Iris Mittenaere in Stephane Rolland Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017-2018--Miss Universe 2017 Finals, The AXIS Theater Planet Hollywood Las Vegas
Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere--from France--wore two fabulous gowns during the Miss Universe 2017 Finals Night. First, she wore this white crepe and gazar gown from French Couturier Stephane Rolland and his Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017/2018 Collection. The gown is all hand-made and would probably cost around $75,000 if one was kind enough to A) order it, as well B) afford it.
Lady In Red: Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere taking her Final Walk in Dubai-based Filipino Designer Michael Cinco Couture --Iris wore this GORGEOUS strapless ombré red sequined gown featuring a sweetheart neckline (very plunging!), a column base gown and attached crinoline-backed overskirt. She looked FABULOUS! The gown fit beautifully and was Pageant Couture Perfection! If there was one critique: Those black platform pumps! POUR QUOI????? (WHY!!!???)
OK...Are you guys ready?? It's time for my Miss Universe 2017 EVENING GOWNS REVIEW of the Top 10 Semi-finalist's Gowns:
Gown Ladies: Miss Universe 2017 contestants during the Evening Gown Competition--Miss Universe 2017 Finals, The AXIS Theater Planet Hollywood Las Vegas
So close...I could (almost) touch the SEQUINS!--Sneaking a photo of some of the 10 Semifinalists after they finished the evening Gown Competition (L to R) Miss Universe Venezuela Keysi Sayago, Miss USA Kara McCullough, Miss Universe Philippines Rachel Peters, Miss Universe Canada Lauren Howe and the eventual winner, Miss Universe South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters
Gown Gals: Miss Universe 2017 Semi-finalists in their evening gowns-- Miss Universe 2017 Finals, The AXIS Theater Planet Hollywood Las Vegas
What's always exciting about the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant is that many of the contestants--if they make the Semifinalist round, and onto the Evening Gown Competition, they do a GOWN CHANGE from what they wore for the Preliminary Competition. And almost all of them--except for two--did! Here is my REVIEW of the TOP TEN Semi-Finalists's Gowns, beginning with my BEST:
No. 1: Miss Universe Thailand Maria Poonlertlarb: When Maria entered the stage in this midnight blue shimmering gown, I just about fell off my chair and started shouting "COUTURE DAHLEEENG COUTURE!!!". I LOVED this stunning gown designed by Asava Thailand . This was a gown change for Maria from what she wore for the Preliminaries (which I also rated as my NUMBER ONE GOWN HERE!). Her Final Night Gown had DRAMA, chic style, elegance, stage-impact (the beautiful blue and silver sequins!) AND an homage to traditional Thai dresses, with those GORGEOUS shoulder "flaps" and back tulle capes. Maria looked like an imaginary FASHION Empress of Thailand!
Score: 9.99
2. Miss Universe Colombia Laura Gonzalez: No. 2 in my list goes to COLOMBIA! Laura--who almost became Miss Universe (she got the First Runner-up prize) looked every bit an elegant Pageant Queen in this all-over sequined silver-over-nude column gown designed by Hernan Zajar . The off-the-shoulder style was smart since it opened up that area creating a longer neckline. The dress featured vertically and diagonally placed sequins (50,800 of them--all hand-sewn!) also shaping her figure through the use of crystals. The flower applique in the upper torso gave extra detail that was also nice for the 3/4 shot. I also loved that there was no too-high slit and the length was just right (hiding any unsightly platform shoes!). I also loved her center-parted sleek hairstyle. Muy chic y muy linda! This was also a gown change from the Preliminaries.
Score: 9.80
3. Miss Universe Canada Lauren Howe: Lauren changed her gown from a very "Ballroom dancing" design that she wore for the Preliminaries (which I wasn't a fan of)...
Miss Universe Canada at the Miss Universe 2017 Preliminary Competition
And thank goodness she did: She was my No. 3! This nude fit-and-flare gown featured beautiful silver applique, a halter neckline and very full tulle overskirt. It had major stage impact, combining a nice Red Carpet-style gown with the "theatrics" of a Pageant Gown. It also fit well (perfect length!) and overall, looked GREAT on her! This is THE Miss Universe Pageant and she BROUGHT HER A-Gown Game!
Score: 9.70
4. Miss Universe Venezuela Keysi Sayago: Keysi wore a GORGEOUS silver sequined gown from designer Alejandro Fajardo for the Preliminaries and she changed into this white crepe design for the Finals. While this was a pretty choice, I was a bit disappointed. This gown lacked the WOW factor we usually see from a Miss Venezuela and just wasn't "Venezuela Alta Moda" enough. The dress looked like a beautiful wedding dress, and in fact it was: It is from the Barcelona Spain brand Pronovias and its Atelier Pronovias Wedding Dress division. The crepe gown retails for 5,500 Euros (about $6515 at today's exchange rate)...
As beautiful as this gown was, I'm not so sure if it was right for the Miss Universe stage. In terms of fit, it looked nice except it was also a bit too short which is odd, since usually the Miss Venezuela "Glam Team" have their fit ON-POINT for these ladies! But, I did love the exquisite crystal detail on her upper torso and Gracias a Dios she wore the PERFECT shoes: Love those strappy silver heels!
Score: 9.30
5. Miss Universe Jamaica Davina Bennett: Three words--You Go Girl! Normally, I would have said that this was a CRAY-CRAY-LICIOUS gown. Seriously, there's A LOT going on: The sheer iridescent fabric, the oversized "Flaura & Faura" appliques, the back capes...the bright "highlighter Yellow" color....I mean, it's A LOT. But, Davina WORKED IT OVERTIME and made me drink the CRAY-CRAY Gown Kool-Aid! The gown was designed by Uzuri International , whose principals are franchise holders of the local competition, Karl Williams and Mark McDermoth. Under any other circumstances I would've been like "Oh Dear!" but here...on Davina: Bravo! And by the way, she was one of only two of the Top 10 contestants who did not change her gown; this is also what she wore for the Preliminaries.
Score: 9.05
6. Miss Universe South Africa (and eventual Miss Universe 2017 Winner) Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters: Demi-Leigh wore this nude-based shimmering gown for the Finals of Miss Universe 2017, and she won! it wasn't my Top Fave (I have her here at No. 6 out of 10) but it did the job! The column-style dress was designed by South African designer Anel Botha and featured 30,000 hand-embroidered Swarovski crystals, a dangerously high center front slit, long sleeves, plunging neckline and even shoulder pads! It was simple and didn't have that usual major gown drama factor but for Demi-Leigh, it was just right. And trust me, this gown was A LOT better than the velvet green thing she wore for the Preliminaries:
Miss Universe South Africa at the Miss Universe 2017 Preliminary Competition
I also give her TONS of points for wearing those silver strappy heels. While I wished the platform wasn't so high, it still worked with the gown.
Score: 9.00
7. Miss Universe Philippines Rachel Peters: Rachel changed her gown--from a golden one at the Preliminaries, to this silver-steel blue Val Taguba gown. Both gowns had super sexy elements which worked with Rachel's amazing body. This one featured side cut-outs, a plunging neckline (with an illusion center front panel), side front slit opening and feathered hem. The design was very Las Vegas Showgirl Pageant Queen but lacked Haute Couture refinement of say, the gown worn by Miss World Philippines at the recent Miss World finals . Rachel still looked super sexy and impacting, however, I just wished it could have been something more in the line of what outgoing Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere wore to give up her crown, but not in red obviously!
Score: 8.95
8. Miss Universe Brazil Monalysia Alcantara: Monalysa wore this red gown for the Miss Universe 2017 Finals. This was a change from what she wore at the Preliminaries. The gown was designed by Gloria Coelho and featured unique paillettes in varying sizes covering most of the entire sheer gown, except for some areas around the waist, sleeves and back. The gown was interesting and original, especially in its applique work. To me, the gown was OK; it had stage impact and I did like the strong lipstick red color, but at the same time, I couldn't help but be a bit distracted by the fabrication and the too-close-to-a-national-costume look of it all.
Score: 8.75
9. Miss USA Kara McCullough: Kara wore this ivory gown featuring gold and silver sequin embroidery and a Cheongsam look to the design. The gown, created by Sherri Hill , had a fitted sheath silhouette, Mandarin collar, extended shoulders, a super high side front slit and very open front upper torso keyhole. While I loved the fabric and hints of Chinoiserie influence, I just wish it wasn't open in the front (it's like "Hello! Say Hi to my sisters!"). It could have also used more drama with a full-length fit-and-flare/mermaid shape with no slit. Maybe close the front and make it a plunging back. That to me, would have been more "Diva!".
Score: 8.50
Lastly...
10. Miss Universe Spain Sofia del Prado: Sofia was the other Top 10 Semifinalist who kept the same gown she wore to the Preliminaries. The gown was designed by Colombian designer based in NYC, John Miranda. The white dress featured a sequined fit-and-flare base and feathered neckline trim and back overskirt/cape. She called this her "Swan Gown" since it reminds her of a Swan I presume. Personally, it reminds me more of a "Valley of the Dolls" hostess about to hand me a cigarette and a Dirty Martini in Palm Springs in 1966.
Score: 8.00
THAT'S A GOWN WRAP!!
The "Phoenix" Mikimoto crown makes a comeback. The Mikimoto crown was last used in 2007--ten years back--by Japan's Riyo Mori. It had since been kept (in a Miss Universe vault perhaps?) after switching the crowns by Diamond Nexus Labs and the Diamond International Corporation (DIC). In August 2017, it was reported that the WME/IMG, the mother company of Miss Universe, sued the Czech company Diamond International Corporation for breach of contract. According to Reuters , IMG Universe canceled the contract after the company failed to make two payments. So, now, the Mikimoto crown and its 500 diamonds and 120 South Sea and Akoya pearls, is BACK!
Congratulations to Miss Universe South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters for winning Miss Universe 2017!!

SASHES AND TIARAS.....MISS SUPRANATIONAL 2017 EVENING GOWN Preliminaries: My Top 15!
Best in SupraGowns: Contestants from 2017 Miss Supranational (L to R) Miss Supranational India Pedem Ongmu Namgyal; Miss Supranational Mexico Samantha Ley Va; Miss Supranational Ecuador Katty Lopez; Miss Supranational Indonesia Karina Nadila; Miss Supranational Germany Mona Schafnitzl--Miss Supranational 2017 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition
Photos Courtesy of Miss Supranational Facebook Page
Indonesia, Philippines and Myanmar were voted by fans on the Miss Supranational Facebook page as the Top 3 Evening Gowns
The 2017 Miss Supranational Beauty Pageant is currently taking place in Poland as well as Slovakia. 60+ contestants from all over the world arrived in Poland last week and are now across the border at a resort called Aquacity Propad in nearby Slovak Republic taking part in many activities as well as Preliminary competitions, The Finals will occur in the Spa City Resort of Krynica Zdroj, Poland on December 1st when the 9th Miss Supranational will be crowned by last year's winner, Srinidhi Shetty from India .
The Preliminary Evening Gown Competition took place earlier this week and after seeing the photos of the contestants and their gowns, here are my TOP 15 BEST...in GOWN, starting with my No. 1:
No. 1. Miss Supranational Mexico Samantha Ley Va: Samantha wore this all white sequined gown featuring a fit-and-flare shape, pretty sequined embellishment and elegantly dramatic shoulder back "falls"/capes. The white color was perfect for Samantha's skin color and the look and fit of the gown were MUY BIEN! All she really needed was crown darlings!
Score: 9.35
No. 2 Miss Supranational Germany Mona Schafnitzl: Mona's gown was my second best among all the contestants. She chose this golden sequined style with a fit-and-flare/mermaid silhouette. This strapless gown looked luxe, fit her beautifully (perfect length!) and I LOVED her chic sleek chignon hairstyle. She looked like a Pageant Gown Diva!
Score: 9.25
No. 3 Miss Supranational Indonesia Karina Nadila: Karina looked every bit like a pageant contestant who is IN IT TO WIN IT! I liked her one shoulder lilac sequined gown. The dress featured a high side-front slit very full tulle back "fall". The design had Pageant Drama, looked great on her and stood out as being very expensive looking; the dress was like if Lebanese/Paris Couturier Elie Saab did Pageants! If there was any critique, I would have wished her shoes were NOT platform and instead were just non-platform strappy heels. At least she did get the silver color--and "strappy" part right.
Score: 9.20
No. 4 Miss Supranational Dominican Republic Lia Rossis: I really liked Lia's gown for several reasons. First, the bold violet color was impressive; the shape was beautiful and the details in the gown itself were quite exquisite. I especially loved the layers of the folded cascade panels. Also, she gets points for the modern chic-and-sleek center part hairstyle.
Score: 9.10
No. 5 Miss Supranational Slovak Republic Michaela Cmarkova: I was shocked as all Pageant Gown SHOCKED...that here we had a pageant contestant A)Not wearing a nude/golden gown, and B) that she wore a simple, perfectly elegant red carpet-worthy gown! Thank You. I thought the style was modern and I loved the waist draping/bow, cascade details. So on-trend chic! Simple and still Fab. Not a single sequin in sight...or SLIT! But she still looked Gown Amazing.
Score: 9.05
No. 6 Miss Supranational Ecuador Katty Lopez: I read somewhere (I am sure it must have been Facebook...of course!) that this beautiful aquamarine gown was NOT her actual gown; her real choice had not arrived in time. Now, here's my advice: I don't really care what her original one looks like because this was JUST FINE! Loved the color, loved the fit. The dramatic shape made her look SUPER SEXY and it had enough of a sparkle with that neckline embellishment. Katty: This gown is MUY BIEN mija!
Score: 9.02
No. 7 Miss Supranational India Peden Ongmu Namgyal: Peden Ongmu is so exotically beautiful--this unique mix of East Indian and Tibetan influences highlight this lovely contestant from Northeast India. Since last year's representative from India won this pageant, she's got a lot of pressure. And I think she is starting well with this choice of gown. The halter-neckline shimmering silver design was very fitted and super sexy, featuring a very open side front "slit". This gown is very similar similar to what this year's Miss India Universe wore to the Miss Universe 2017 Preliminaries HERE and was also designed by former Project Runway contestant Swapnil Shinde.
Score: 9.00
No. 8 Miss Supranational Wales Rachael Tate: Speaking of sexy, Rachael is OOZING it! With this vampy golden gown--and all that makeup, pouty lips, and wind-blown hair, she looks like the SUPER NAUGHTY girlfriend of a soccer (or rugby) star player. Seriously, just look at her! She is meant to be on DailyMail.com and have some sort of SCANDAL! Anyway...back to the gown: This gown was designed by Filipino designer Leo Almodal, featuring golden sequin fabrication, a very fit-and-flare shape and some wrist chiffon accents (?). It's very impacting even if it is SOOOO Over-the-Top Vampy Pageant! In addition...it's very similar to...
Katherine Espin Miss Earth 2016 from Ecuador--Katherine wore this gown to win the Miss Earth 2016 crown last year. The design is very similar to Miss Supranational Wales, except for the neon canary yellow color! Listen, if it was a "Winning Gown" for one pageant queen, who says it can't be to another.
Score: 8.85
No. 9 Miss Supranational Poland Paulina Maziarz: Paulina wore this column style black sequined lace gown and I liked it...enough to make the No. 9 spot in my Top 15. The dress fits her super-skinny figure well, it wasn't vulgar (no super high slits or panties showing!) and OMG(!) she didn't wear those AWFUL platform Stripper Pumps these pageant girls just love. I also liked her modern center parted lightly waved hair styled. She looked like an ingenue actress on the red carpet!
Score: 8.75
No. 10 Miss Supranational Romania Bianca Tirsin: Bianca wore this red gown for the Miss Supranational 2017 Preliminaries. I thought she looked GORGEOUS; not only was the gown the perfect length, it fit nicely, and overall, made for a great impact. This might not have been a "WOW!" of an Haute Couture style gown but it did the job just fine.
Score: 8. 55
No. 11 Miss Supranational Spain Beatriz Balseiro Cendan: Beatriz wore this lace-over-nude gown with light sequin detailing for the Miss Supranational 2017 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition. I thought this was a delicately beautiful dress style that looked pretty and elegant on her. While it might not have been SUPER FAB Gown Couture, there was nothing wrong or tacky about it, and her styling was also on-point.
Score: 8.45
No. 12 Miss Supranational China Danna Liao: Danna wore this red sequined gown which I liked enough to place her in my Top 15 Gowns List. The dress was classy, fit well and had enough crystals to satisfy the "Pageant Fab" criteria. I liked the vertical sequined "stripes" and especially the neckline yoke detail. I also thought her chic slicked back ponytail added a bit of Runway Drama.
Score: 8.30
No. 13 Miss Supranational Colombia Tica Martinez: Tica wore this iridescent golden gown featuring nude panels swerving through her body. The dress also had pearl sequins, big jewels on the body, as well as scalloped lace sequined appliques at the hem. It was very "Pageant" in all the details (were those scalloped sequined lace hem pieces really necessary!!??). I put her here because the overall silhouette was impressive and she did work the "Sofia Vergara" sexiness.
Score: 8.25
No. 14 Miss Supranational Japan Yuki Koshikawa: Yuki wore a red tulle and lace gown that looked nice on her. I liked the fit and while usually, I am not a fan of big diamante necklaces such as this, I think this was OK. I will try and overlook those tacky-licious nude platform pumps that are peeking from the hem, however.
Score: 8.10
And lastly...
No. 15 Miss Supranational Singapore Lynn Teo: Lynn's gown choice was this copper/golden sequined dress. The strapless style had nice geometrical designs on it which gave Lynn a nice silhouette. The dress could have been about four inches longer (and it would have been if she didn't wear those tacky platform heels) but overall, it was good enough to make my Top 15!
Score: 8.00
EXTRA GOWN CREDIT Goes To...
Miss Supranational Rwanda Habiba Ingabire: Habiba wore this strapless red chiffon gown featuring an "Empire"-like silhouette. I thought she looked elegant and chic in this. While the dress didn't necessarily look refined or expensive (the ripple-y hem and seams were a good indication of that), I get the vibe she--and her designer--were going for and therefore, she gets a "Special Gown Mention" here. I also thought her hairstyle and those beautiful earrings were the style cherries on the gown cake!
Miss Supranational Serbia Bojana Bojanic: There is something about this strapless black-and-white gown that intrigued me. I liked the graphic bold lines, I think it would have worked better without the see-through, beaded piece in the middle of the dress, but the design was definitely "original"! I also think that what helped the overall look was how sultry Bojana looked with that hair an bright red lipstick makeup!

SASHES AND TIARAS.....MISS UNIVERSE 2017 Preliminary EVENING GOWNS: My TOP 20 BEST + EXTRAS!
Best in Gown? Which one of these ladies wore the BEST GOWN--Keep reading...(L to R) Miss Universe Mexico Denisse Franco, Miss Universe Ghana Ruth Quashie, Miss Universe Thailand Maria Poonlertlarb, Miss Universe Venezuela Keysi Sayago, and Miss Universe Indonesia Bunga Jelitha--Miss Universe 2017 Evening Gown Preliminary Competition, Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino Las Vegas
Photos Courtesy of Missosology Facebook Page, HO/The Miss Universe Organization
This past Monday was the 66th Miss Universe Preliminary Competition, held at the Mezzanine Level of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino Las Vegas, same location that the Miss Universe 2017 National Costumes Presentation was held (Check out my TOP 20 Miss Universe 2017 Costumes HERE!).
Nude and Golden--"Nude" and golden/blush colored gowns--Trend No. 1 of Pageant Gowns--Miss Universe 2017 contestants at the Miss Universe 2017 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition, Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino Las Vegas
The Preliminaries are very important because this is where the contestants compete in Swimsuit and Evening Gown in front of a panel of judges who will then choose the Semifinalists who will be announced on the night's Final Crowning this upcoming Sunday November 26th. I don't really care about the Swimsuits but THE EVENING GOWNS....that's my territory!
Ivory Queens--White Gowns--Trend No. 2 of Pageant Gowns--Miss Universe 2017 contestants at the Miss Universe 2017 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition, Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino Las Vegas
After looking at all the 92 contestants and their gowns, there were LOTS of Nude and Golden Gowns, White Gowns, Canary Yellow Gowns (Top 3 Trends in the Pageant World!)...
Canary Yellow Gals--Bright "highlighter/canary yellow" gowns--Trend No. 3 of Pageant Gowns--Miss Universe 2017 contestants at the Miss Universe 2017 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition, Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino Las Vegas
One can blame the originators of the "Nude/Golden" Gown Look on Lebanese Couturiers Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad but I also think after last year's Miss Universe France Iris Mittenaere won the Miss Universe crown wearing a nude/golden gown (Click HERE!)...this year's contestants were bitten by the NUDE GOLDEN GOWN Virus. So, with that said, here is my TOP 20 GOWNS from Miss Universe 2017 preliminary Evening Gown Competition, starting with....
1. Miss Universe Thailand Maria Poonlertlarb: This was by far the most Haute Couture-looking gowns of all the 92 contestants vying for Miss Universe 2017. Miss Universe Thailand chose a white shimmering gown from Thai designer/brand Surface by Joe Surface. The strapless gown was custom made for her and featured a sequined crinoline/tulle fabrication and folded cascade drapes with a back overskirt. It was dramatic, stage-impacting and Paris Runway Fab. No store-bought polyester dress here darlings!
Score: 9.75
2. Miss Universe Venezuela Keysi Sayago: Keysi is a runway fashion DIVA! She's been posting photos of all her daily looks while in Las Vegas and has been looking STYLED huney! So I was happy to see this beautiful choice for her gown: A silver/white sequined crinoline strapless design from Venezuelan designer Alejandro Fajardo (he also designed her national costume which I loved). The dress fit perfectly, hugged every right part of her flawless figure and the shimmering white color stood out against her naturally tanned skin. I also loved the bun and earrings as well.
Score: 9.65
*This gown--by the way-- is a version of what he designed for this year's winner of "Miss Venezuela":
Stefhany Gutierrez Miss Delta Amacuro and newly crowned Miss Venezuela 2017. She wore this white sequined Alejandro Fajardo gown. She'll compete in NEXT YEAR'S Miss Universe.
3. Miss Universe Indonesia Bunga Jelitha: Another fashionista at this year's Miss Universe is the tall and fabulous Miss Universe Indonesia. Bunga chose (Thank God it wasn't NUDE, GOLDEN, or WHITE!) a pink silk chiffon draped gown from Indonesian designer Andreas Odang. I LOVED the bubblegum pink color and the "Old Hollywood Glamour"-meets-Grecian Goddess draping and style of the gown. I also liked her sleek hair. I just wished she would not have worn those tacky nude platforms: They are so NOT Haute and so 4 pm, as opposed to 9 pm darling. I wish--instead--she would have worn the silver strappy heels in the photo-shoot above. But these girls--they always want to look taller, instead of looking chic.
Score: 9.35
4. Miss Universe Ghana Ruth Quashie: Yeayyy! Another non-nude/golden/white gown! The stunning Miss Universe Ghana wore my 4th Favorite Gown from the 2017 Miss Universe Preliminaries. This canary yellow dress was designed by Pistis Ghana by Kabutey Dzietror and Sumaiya Mohammed and it features yellow duchesse satin with hand-beaded Kente-style embellishments. I thought the color, style and fit were PERFECT! And the gown made Ruth a stand-out in a sea of Nude/Silver/Gold. I was also VERY HAPPY that she wore the correct shoes and not those platform ones.
Score: 9.20
5. Miss Universe Aruba Alina Mansur: Aruba's Alina Mansur wore this silver/white sequined gown designed by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza. This was another example of a more Haute-looking evening gown. From the side cascade drape to the stunning glittery fabrication, to the correct length...it was all fab! While I wished the upper torso wasn't so...sheer'ish (it was like a cross between a figure skating costume-meets-a-too-sexy-pageant contestant), I tried to overlook that and concentrate on the overall look.
Score: 9.15
6. Miss Universe Korea Sewhee Cho: This gown worn by Miss Universe Korea was one of the better shimmering silver ones...and there were A LOT! The off-the-shoulder column/fit and flare style--designed by Vietnamese designer Chung Thanh Phong--fit her BEAUTIFULLY and the silver fringe was stage-impacting fabulous. This was one of the BEST and that's why she is my No. 6.
Score: 9.10
7. Miss Universe Peru Prissila Howard: Prissila wore one of those popular "nude"/silver gowns for the Miss Universe 2017 Preliminaries. I loved the gorgeous sequined detail and how it curved around the body, really accentuating her figure. More importantly, I also appreciated that the lining went ALL THE WAY DOWN! While many may think she might have been too "covered up", I thought this was elegant and classy. I know that you can barely see those nude platforms she was wearing (Gracias a Dios!) but I wished that she might have gone with silver strappy heels, but that's just me.
Score: 9.05
8. Miss Universe Australia Olivia Rogers: I thought this blue sequined gown was a very nice choice for the pretty Miss Universe Australia--so much so that I placed her at No. 8 in my Top 20 Best Gowns here. The gown was designed by Australian designer Steph Audino and featured a halter neckline, straight column dress with high side-front slit and attached full overskirt. The caviar-beaded fabrication was exquisite and expensive and the overall style--especially with the side front folded draped detail--looked very "Elie Saab Lite", which I admired. And KUDOS to my dear Olivia for wearing THE RIGHT and very fab silver strappy heels!!! #ILoveYou.
Score: 9.00
9. Miss Universe Angola Lauriela Martins: Next gown on my list of Best is another nude/shimmering design, very similar to Miss Universe Peru's gown (No. 7)--this time worn by the statuesque Miss Universe Angola. The gown was by Brazilian designer Alexandre Dutra and featured golden and silver sequins over a nude tulle base, as well as shoulder details. Once again, though, I wasn't a fan of her shoes. But, overlooking those, the overall impact was very "Glittering Pageant Queen".
Score: 8.98
10. Miss Universe Mexico Denisse Franco: The beautiful Miss Universe Mexico wore this white crepe gown with nude illusion and sequins designed by Marcela Beltran. The gown shape looked marvelous on Denisse, curving her figure perfectly as you can see above. The dress featured a center front slit and princess seams that flared the style into a full mermaid-like bottom sweep. If there was any critique, I just think that the nude illusion--paired with the rhinestone details--takes the gown into "Figure Skating Costume" territory. But other than that, this was a nice gown for her.
Score: 8.97
11. Miss Universe Nicaragua Berenice Quezada: Designed by Nicaraguan designer Erick Bendaña, this gown got my attention because it didn't fall into any of those typical Pageant Gown categories. This style was a full ballgown style and featured a very pretty mint blue color. The dress was covered in what seemed like cut velvet and sequins, which added to the unique one-of-a-kind look. I thought it was elegant and very pretty.
Score: 8.95
12. Miss Universe France Alicia Aylies: Oh, yes, here we go again, a nude/blush/silver sequined gown! This time, on Miss Universe France. The shape and silhouette were nice and I liked the semi-sheer look (not completely see-through!). I also thought the delicate tulle capelet on her shoulders and arms was a nice detail. And in addition, a Merci to Alicia for NOT wearing those nude platform shoes and instead opting for the correct strappy heels.
Score: 8.90
13. Miss Universe Sweden Frida Fornander: Miss Universe Sweden's gown--designed by "Crown Couture" Gaspar Cruz --featured an off-the-shoulder neckline, nude base and silver and blue sequined embellishments. The pop of color made it a little different from all those other very similar-looking gowns and at least, for me, made me take notice in a good way. It also fit her quite nicely. But...uh oh, what do I see on her feet! Oh No. Not Those. Clunky. Platform. Shoes!
Score: 8.75
14. Miss Universe Panama Laura de Sanctis: No. 13 in my Top 20 List of Best Gown of Miss Universe 2017 Preliminaries was this one worn by Miss Universe Panama Laura de Sanctis. The dress was designed by Venezuelan designer Julio Mora and featured a white iridescent full sweeping skirt with a side front slit attached to a nude illusion top with shimmering gold-and-silver sequins that looked like luxe Christmas tinsel. While I loved how the sequined "tinsel" looked on her upper torso, I could have done without it on the arms and shoulder. And once again...those nude platform pumps! (Ayyy Dios Mio!).
Score: 8.65
15. Miss Universe Guyana Rafieya Husain: Designed by Canadian designer Bobby Ackbarali , known for doing fabulous Dance Wear and Beauty Pageant designs--he created this three days before she left from Guyana to Las Vegas (!). I loved the bold canary yellow color and thought the fuller ballgown shape was pretty and Princess-like. One has to be careful though when doing such a BOLD color, since it can take you into Disney Territory very quickly. With that said, the color is PERFECT for Rafieya and she styled her hair in a very chic manner with that center front sleek look. If there was any critique, she didn't need those diamante earrings; the rhinestone trim on the dress itself was enough.
Score: 8.55
16. Miss Universe Philippines Rachel Peters: Rachel wore this strapless gold/nude gown from Dubai-based designer Val Taguba, who also created her "Golden Chicken" national costume which you can see HERE in my Miss Universe 2017 National Costumes BLOG. The gown featured gorgeous intricate gold sequined detail over a nude tulle base and super high side front slit. She looked Va Va Voom Super sexy--continuing her "theme" started with her also-very sexy National Costume. If there were any critiques, it would be that I wished she wouldn't have worn those nude platform pumps and instead opted for gold strappy heels; and I thought she could have bumped up her earrings to something more luxe. Also, since this style of dress has become so "Pageant Typical", there is nothing very exciting about this look.
Score: 8.50
17. Miss Universe Vietnam Loan Nguyen: Miss Universe Vietnam also wore one of those "nude" gowns (seriously, they all were bitten by the NUDE GOWN VIRUS!). This one was designed by NTK Do Long and had gold and silver sequined appliques over a nude tulle base, long sleeves and an illusion netting covered neckline. The style fit her nicely and she styled herself well (except for those nude platforms, of course!).
Score: 8.30
18. Miss Universe Dominican Republic Carmen Munos: Oh, look at that: It's NOT a nude gown! The lovely contestant from the Dominican Republic wore this dramatic black sequined ballgown, designed by Dominican Republic designer Rafael Rivero. I thought this was stage-impacting and impressive. The fabrication looks very expensive and the shape makes it stand out among a sea of skin-tight column gowns. I'm sure many people might say she's a little too "Gone With The Wind" but I like the drama and almost "Throwback" style to the Miss Venezuela SUPERGOWN days of Angel Sanchez and Guy Meliet.
Score: 8.25
19. Miss Universe Guam Myana Welch: Guam's representative looked very pretty in this white sequined gown. The dress featured "patches" of clustered paillettes over a nude tulle base. I think this was a nice gown choice and her styling was modern; I even liked those fab earrings of hers. What I didn't I like...You guessed it: THE STRIPPER PLATFORM PUMPS!
Score: 8.15
20. Miss Universe India Shraddha Shahshidhar: Last on my Top 20 Best Gowns List, I wanted to include this design worn by Miss Universe India. The gown, created by Indian designer Swapnil Shinde (who also happened to be a contestant on "Project Runway" Season 14 and has now become one of the go-to designers for Bollywood stars and Indian Pageant Queens), features silver sequins over a nude tulle base, along with a super sexy silhouette featuring a very high front "slit" opening. I would have preferred if the slit/opening wasn't there and think a closed gown would have looked more "Red Carpet Fab", but I loved the sequined fabrication. Also, because of the opening, I got to see her unfortunate choice of shoes (WHYYYY????). But on a good note: Her hair, makeup and earrings were on-point!
Score: 8.10
But wait...THERE'S MORE...
EXTRAS!!! I just wanted to include this group of Gown Ladies just because their choices of gowns were so...UNUSUAL! I wasn't sure if I wanted to call them "Oh Dear's!" or just give them "Drag Queen" snaps for being bold enough to go there. I think it's a combination of both. These were certainly NOT my Top 20 Faves but they were "Cray-Cray-Licious"! Take a look:
Miss Universe Malaysia Samantha James: She's wearing A SEQUINED BODY SUIT. Under her one shoulder red gown. #JustSaying
Miss Great Britain Anna Burdzy: She's wearing a gown that has a matching leotard/hot shorts...that are ON FULL DISPLAY! Is it a gown? Kind of. Is it Hot Shorts? Kind of. Will she remove the dress and perform a Showgirl number or Baton Twirl? Maybe. Well, it is Las Vegas, after all! #AtAGurl
Miss Universe Brazil Monalysa Alcantara: Oh, what do we have here? It's a Shimmering Sequined Glam House Coat Gown...with full bell sleeves and visible sequined panties underneath! While I am not sure how "Miss Universe Fab" this is as a gown, I would DIE if I went to someone's mansion, and the owner's wife walked down the stairs and greeted me in this...and a Dirty Martini!
Miss Universe Poland Katarzyna Wlodarek: Wow. That. Is. A. Look. Nude gown with blue jeweled crystals, stacked silver platform pumps AND a big pouffy iridescent overskirt. I can hear Nina Garcia of "Project Runway" having a heart attack right about now. I have several questions: Is the overskirt made of blue iridescent organza or blue cellophane wrapping paper? On a good note: This would make for a FAB dress from the "Make a Pageant Gown out of Party Store Materials" Challenge on "Project Runway".
Miss Universe Spain Sofia del Prado: I feel as if I stepped back into "Valley of the Dolls" circa 1966 and all she's missing is a Martini and a long, long cigarette. The white sequins...the fur trim...She should have just finished it off with a fab big bouffant!
Miss Mauritius Angie Callychurn: Not sure why she's missing one sleeve and instead there's only a small wristband/cuff in its place, but oh well. She's very Las Vegas Canary Sequined Showgirl. For Sure.
And lastly...
Miss Universe Myanmar: Two words--Sequined Elephants. Bravo Miss Myanmar.

ICE STYLE.....2017 Internationaux de France Grand Prix of France COSTUMES: PAIRS & ICE DANCE
Mauve Ice: Pairs team Marissa Castelli and Mervin Tran of USA at the 2017 Internatonaux de France Grand Prix of France, Grenoble France
Canadian Pairs team Liobov Ilyushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch at the 2017 Internationaux de France Grand Prix of France, Grenoble France
Time for the final 2017 Internationaux de France Grand Prix of France COSTUMES blog! I've discussed the LADIES HERE, the MEN HERE and now it is time for the PAIRS and ICE DANCE!
Let's begin with the PAIRS costumes, which I have not discussed this season:
Liobov Ilyushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch of Canada--For their Short program to In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins, Ilyushechkina and Moscovitch wore these black and silver costumes. I liked hers especially; it looked modern, fresh and Versace-like. I was also happy that Dylan's look had some detail. Some. I should just be happy with that when it comes to him since I'm just more in AWE of his OUT OF CONTROL Kabunkadunk...figure! (he he)
Free Skate to At This Moment performed by Billy Vera & The Beaters: For their Free Skate, the Canadian Pairs team went with black and red. She wore a halter neckline sequined dress costume which was pretty and he just went with an all-black outfit I would wear on a December in NYC. Please Please PLEASE give Dylan something! A subtle red tuxedo pant stripe perhaps? Otherwise, this is just lazy costuming.
Marissa Castelli and Mervin Tran of USA: US Pairs team of Castelli and Tran skated their Short Program to Fallin' by Alicia Keys at the 2017 Grand Prix of France wearing these costumes above. I liked these looks for them especially her lightly sequined halter costume and his rhinestone embellished shirt. This is the PERFECT EXAMPLE of how to do the all-black men's costume but with some details! Now, I remember that I discussed their costumes back in my 2017 Rostelecom Cup of Russia Costumes Blog and they wore something different:
These costumes above is what they wore...If these seem familiar, it is because they are: They are the same costumes from last season (same program music as well). Anyhow...I thought these were one of THE BEST of last season and they still hold up now. Gorgeous styling, expensive beading...LOVE her one shoulder-like design and especially how draped and beautiful Mervin's costume is. I know that obviously their new costumes weren't ready so they wore these re-hashed ones above at the 2017 Rostelecom Cup of Russia but...I kinda like them BETTER than their new ones. What do you guys think?
Free Skate to Women by Shawn Phillips--I also talked about these in my 2017 Rostelecom Cup of Russia Costumes BLOG HERE but they're so BEAUTIFUL, refined and expensive-looking that...I had to post photos of them again--look at his rhinestone'ed top detail! #Love
ICE DANCE:
Angelique Abachkina and Louis Thauron of France: Short Dance to Samba: Le Serpent by Guem; Rhumba: Abrazame performed by Tamara; Rhumba: Danca Kizomba by Stony--These costumes were fun and fabulous especially dealing with the Latin-inspired Short Dance music and Program. Angelique wore a fringed costume that would make Bob Mackie blush (OK, maybe not, but...). I loved the colors and asymmetrical styling. What I wasn't a fan of was her curled hair style; she looked a little too "Caligula/Roman Gal Being Offered to the Emperor". But, I was a fan of...
Louis's black solid/sheer velvet look! LOVED the "plunging neckline" top and the Jean Paul Gaultier-like velvet details in his shirt design.
Free Dance to Mariage d'amour by Paul de Senneville and Je suis malade by Alice Dona, Serge Lama performed by Lara Fabian--For their Free Dance, Angelique wore this deep lilac colored dress that featured a leotard/bodysuit and a full ombre-dyed skirt. The design also had sequined flower appliques and an asymmetrical front neckline. Louis wore a white shirt and black pants. The white shirt had interesting pleated shoulder details and gray/black dye effect to make it look worn. These were nice but I wished there might have been some of the deep lilac color in his costume. Somewhere.
Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri of Italy--For their Short Dance to Salsa: Bajo La Tormenta performed by Sergio George's Salsa Giants; Rhumba: Con Los Anos Que Me Quedan by Gloria Estefan; and Samba: Samba de Rio Pardo by Miguel Preto, this Italian Ice Dance pair wore these costumes. Naturally, she was the COSTUME STAR and he was just in black (Yawn...but I get it!). Charlene wore a white with purple and pink sequined dress featuring ombre purple/fuchsia-like horsehair trim at the hem making it "ruffle" out. It was VERY "Dancing With The Stars" and I especially liked the rhinestone-studded bustier and nude sequined strapped open back. So sexy. And yes, Marco, well..he was just in black.
Elliana Pogrebinski and Alex Benoit of USA: This US Ice Dance pair skated their Short Dance to Samba: Simba by Dan Nekonecny; Rhumba: Lo So Che Finira by Anna Tatangelo; and Merengue: Bailar by Elvis Crespo, Erick Orrosquieta, Robert Fernandez. Alex was in black. Of course. I liked his plunging neckline top and sheer shoulder/arm detail. PS: He's soooo sexy hot! But yes,--back to Elliana: Loved the bright neon pink color of her costume and fringed skirt. She looked like a South American Bird of Paradise in this great costume!
Cha-Cha! That's it for my 2017 Internationaux de France Grand Prix of France Costumes Blogs
