What inspired me to write my latest book.
What started out as a 15,000 word short story was supposed to turn into a 30,000 word novella. While I was half way through, was the height of the US presidential campaign. The story ran away from me and by the time I was 40,000 words in, I know that I had a series on my hands.
His Sacrifice for Love is over 50,000 words.
I knew my story needed something and I knew the message I wanted to include. Originally, the story was supposed to be boy meets girl, boy and girl get together, girl gets pregnant and they somehow end up together.
That story-line was so overdone that I thought of scrapping the whole thing. Then people started saying and doing things during Trump's campaign that got me thinking that maybe I could used some of what was going on.
I did not want a typical Billionaire romance story. I wanted:
(1) Well developed characters
(2) Likable characters
(3) A villain that was not an ex-girl friend or jealous third wheel (though after thinking I decided on a twist for the 'other' woman.)
(4) A story that was as real as possible
(5) A male character that was not a bad boy and perhaps a little naive. We've seen in almost every billionaire romance how smart and savvy the MC is, and how much of a bad boy he is. I wanted my MC, though with a light rep, to be likable and trustworthy
With all these in mind I decided on the racial angle, within the family circle. The truth is, my antagonists (Herman and Brittany) were created through the highly publicized racial tension in the US at the time.
Upon doing my research, discovered that Herman's character is quite common and so, this series, though romance, is really about overcoming these obstacles.
The Love's Abandon series is not a typical romance. The pace might be slower, less internal relationship conflicts and more focus on overcoming the external conflicts created by outside forces.
Usually we see romances with jealousy, mistrust, cheating and all the things that make up for compelling romantic tension. My book is the opposite because not every relationship is like that. I wanted my story to tell a story.
As we get deeper into the story there will be more situations to overcome and of course a little more suspense. Book 1 is just the beginning of this love story where Chase proves his devotion. In book 2 we hope that Maggie will get a chance to prove herself and maybe become a little stronger as her love is tested.
For book 3, I want to challenge myself to see how far I can push this plot. Will Maggie and Chase make it? I hope so.
