Author Interview with Jonathan Smidt

Another author interview! We asked Jonathan Smidt some questions about writing and what he’s been working on lately. He’s been writing Dungeon Core Online over at Royal Road in his spare time and working on other good stuff. Enjoy his responses and insights into writing below.

When did you first start writing fiction?

The first time I started writing fiction of any sorts was back in the 9th grade, when I started a short story titled Glyax’s Tale (which is where my online username comes from)....

D&D Memes: Rogue Edition

Truth be told, Gord the Rogue is likely one of our favorite rogues due to nostalgia, but D&D is full of all sorts of rogues. In the earliest D&D edition, thief reigned supreme. Elves were also a character class, so who knows. All that aside, we’re going to share some of our favorite D&D memes with rogues as the central focus. For those keeping track, we recently did the DnD Memes: Dungeon Master edition. Without any further ado or bluster, let’s get to the memes!

Rogues: If the dice don’t rui...

LitRPG: My Journey From Adult to PG

Enjoy this new Guest Post by Prax Venter.

Multiple authors and fans have expressed interest in my experience with self-publishing both Erotic-Harem and Non-Erotic Non-Harem novels. They are referring to my published stories: The Enthralled Series and Irrelevant Jack. Honestly? I think people just like variety. We are hormone-drunk sacks of electrified water looking for ways to entertain our individual cravings.

The twisted sponge in my head wanted to read an epic tale mixing World of Warcr...

D&D Editions: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (1977-1985)

This is the third part in our ongoing series looking at all the D&D editions over the years. Enjoy!

Original Dungeons and Dragons was a success on a scale that was hard to predict. It managed to be much more than a simple hobbyist’s modification to an existing strategy game. It was a cultural phenomenon, one that was more restrained by its initial form than anything else. Dungeons and Dragons would have to evolve to capture more of an audience, and that’s where the next iteration of the game...

D&D Memes: Dungeon Master Edition

Welcome to our first collection of DnD memes – a loot box if you will. If you like this post, be sure to stop by the LitRPG Reads Facebook page for even more Dungeons & Dragons adventures, comics, and fun times. The term Dungeon Master (abbreviated as DM) was originally invented by TSR for the Dungeons & Dragons RPG. Its very first appearance was in the Blackmoor supplement for the original D&D tabletop role-playing game.

To avoid infringement of the TSR trademark for the term, other terms a...

Designing Believable LitRPG Mechanics

New guest post by Edwin McRae, author of Warlock: Reign of Blood.

Even though I’ve designed narratives for several video game RPGs like Path of Exile and Ashen, I’ll be the first to admit that I tend to get lost in a deep, dark Forest of Numeracy. I’m more of a word guy than a numbers guy, which probably shows in my LitRPG work. It’s not a LitRPG story if it doesn’t feature stats, but those stats need to be designed and managed very carefully.

I’m Edwin McRae, LitRPG author and game writer, a...

Best D&D Books with Rogues

The rogue is one of the building blocks of a good D&D party. They can sneak, disarm traps, pick locks, and take care of many of those pesky social checks that crop up when you’re out of combat. While most forms of media have great examples of rogues, some of the best exemplars of the class you’ll find are in Dungeons and Dragons novels. The best of the best not only reinforce the knowledge players get from handbooks, but they also show off new ways to play the class. If you’re looking for a s...
