Fun With Writing Friends: So Nice To Have Time With Courtney Schafer

Recently, I had the great pleasure of welcoming  friend and fellow author Courtney Schafer and her family to both Christchurch and New Zealand.

Courtney and I have known each other through our books and social media for some years, including through the BookSworn authors’ group, and met up in person in Sydney last year—which I blogged about here.

So when I knew Courtney was going to be spending some time in Nu Zild, checking out our skiing, climbing, and ice-ska...

This year, I’ve resumed my “About the Characters” post series that focuses on the minor characters in The Wall Of Night series — because “I think it’s the presence of the smaller characters that “makes” a story, creating texture around the main points of view.”

Initially, the series focused exclusively on characters from The Heir of Night, but now I’m continuing on with minor characters from both The Gathering Of The Lost and Daughter of Blood simultaneously — in alphabetical order, of c...

Around the Traps: From Black Gate to Supernatural Underground

I’ve been keeping a low (Lowe – ha!) profile of late, beavering with the writing of WALL4 (huzza!!) — but even so, there has been a flurry of web-by activity over the past few weeks.

Naturally I’m delighted that WALL is included on their list and for those of you who want to find out why, or simply moar, click on:

I So-o ‘Heart” These Words From Dorothy Parker

I must confess, I frequently feel this way when I’m writing…

Kinda nice, too, to know it’s not “just” me: the crown of good company, even—from 1945 – 2017! O-o

Classic Reads: “The Red Badge of Courage” by Stephen Crane

Recently I’ve had the opportunity to re-read some classic novels. In April, I posted about Mary Webb’s Precious Bane and more recently I’ve had the opportunity to check out Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage.(first published 1895.)

Most of you are probably very familiar with what this book is about even if you haven’t read it yet. In summary, the story charts the progress of a young recruit, Henry Fleming, in the USA’s war between the states.

It’s probably worth noting that the civil wa...

A Farewell To John McIntyre: NZ Champion of Kid’s Lit

In very sad news, I learned yesterday of the passing of John McIntyre of Wellington’s Children’s Bookshop.

John was a NZ champion of children’s literature and kid’s reading. I only met him once, in 2009, at the Spinning Gold conference in Wellington, where we were on a panel together — and was impressed by John’s commitment and insight.

Then again, perhaps I already knew that was “who he was” from hearing him review kids’ books on Radio New Zealand’s Nine To Noon programme…

John’s “About Us”...
