So Can A Book Be Dark & Still Add To The Positives?

On August 14, I talked about some of the “why’s” of being a writer, like wanting to tell great stories that capture something of the ache of the human condition, as well as entertaining readers, and also creating something that adds to the balance of positives in the world. (No pressure!)

A potentially counterbalancing reflection is that a considerable body of great literature addresses the world’s darker and seamier side, whether in terms of war (Catch 22, All Quiet on The Western Front, The...

About The Characters: Meet The Minor Players in “The Wall Of Night” Series — Aralth

UK/AU/NZ

This year, I’ve resumed my “About the Characters” post series that focuses on the minor characters in The Wall Of Night series — because “I think it’s the presence of the smaller characters that “makes” a story, creating texture around the main points of view.”

Initially, the series focused exclusively on characters from The Heir of Night, but now I’m continuing on with minor characters from both The Gathering Of The Lost and Daughter of Blood simultaneously — in alphabetical order,...

On Supernatural Now: “In Appreciation: Building on the Past & Helen Lowe’s The Wall of Night Series” — A Guest Post By Paul Weimer

As a member of Team Supernatural Underground, I’m delighted to host SFF genre writer and afficionado, Paul Weimer, as an SU guest this month.

Paul’s topic is the evolution of epic fantasy as a distinct subgenre of speculative fiction, which he charts from its contemporary inception. he has also used The Wall Of Night series as an example of the latest, “Fourth Era” of epic fantasy — there’s a wee bit of discussion going in the comments, too, about the evolution of the Fantasy heroine.

Georgette Heyer & A Favourite “Putting Good into the World” Anecdote

Last Monday I talked about writing and (I hope) adding to the positives in this world. One of my favourite anecdotes in this regard concerns the famous historical-romance author, Georgette Heyer, and her Regency novel, Friday’s Child.

In summary, Friday’s Child is a romp: a swashbuckling account of the relatively lighthearted activities of a group of ridiculous young men and equally frivolous young women. Being a Heyer tale it’s a huge amount of fun, based on excellent historical research, bu...
