Sharon Tate and the Manson Murders - Greg King

RESEÑAREVIEWEsta es una cruza entre crimen real y biografía que está muy bien realizada. Me gustó mucho que King prefiriera hacer que el foco no fueran los asesinos (si bien hay un relato detallado acerca de ellos y sus vidas) sino incluir un gran volumen de información nueva acerca de las víctimas, particularmente e la actriz Sharon Tate. Se relata el impacto que los eventos tuvieron en los familiares de las víctimas e incluso se habla de qué sucedió luego de finalizado el juicio con aquellos involucrados.

Gran parte del libro trata sobre Sharon y su vida, y se la muestra como realmente era, sin victimizarla. Ojalá este libro ayude a contribuir a que se la recuerde como una persona dulce y una actriz que comenzaba a hacerse un nombre, y no como una celebridad que fue asesinada por La Familia Manson,

I really appreciated the fact that King decided not to focus on the murderers -going into enough detail on the matter- but rather include plenty new information about the victims, particularly Sharon Tate. He talks about how the events impacted on the victims' families and there also is a part on what happened after the trial to those involved.

The majority of the book is about Sharon and her life and showing who she really was, without victimizing her, Hopefully, this book will contribute to her being remembered as a sweet person and then-upcoming actress, and not as a celebrity who met her end by the hands of The Manson Family.

RESEÑAREVIEWAcompañada de las hermosas ilustraciones de David Wenzel, esta maravillosa historia navideña mágica en sí es perfecta para leer durante esa época del año y, además, deja un mensaje muy importante.

Ya se acerca Navidad y para mí este libro sería el regalo perfecto. Lástima que recién acaba de ser publicado en inglés y no se consigue en Argentina, pero nunca se sabe lo que va a ser traducido, así que no perfamos las esperanzas.

Everything Belongs to the Future - Laurie Penny

RESEÑAREVIEWEste libro trata sobre un futuro distópico en el que se ha descubierto una "fuente de la juventud" en forma de píldora que permite a las personas vivir cientos de años más. Sin embargo, y por supuesto, es cara y sólo pueden acceder a ella las personas de los más altos rangos y más adinerados. En la otra cara de la moneda tenemos a algunos rebeldes y también a un pequeño grupo de idealistas que buscan generar una revolución al lograr que esta píldora esté disponible para todo el mundo.
El concepto sonaba genial, pero no me gustó la forma en que se lo desarrolló. Teniendo en cuenta que se trata de un libro de unas 100 páginas, todo lo que sucedía se sentía como apresurado y poco claro en algunos momentos. Creo que, de haber sido un poco más largo, se podrían haber desarrollado mejor tanto los personajes como el mundo en sí, y se habría llegado a un texto mucho más interesante y completo.
Sí sentí muy bien realizada la visión de nuestra sociedad arruinando un descubrimiento científico tan importante y distorsionándolo para convertirlo en un negocio.

It enables people to live hundreds of years longer  but it of course expensive and thus only attainable by rich people. On the other side of the coin there are rebels but there also is a small group of idealists hoping to spark a revolution and make the Fix available to everyone.
The premise of this book sounded great but I didn't enjoy how it was developed. Being only about 100 pages everything felt somewhat rushed and I believe I could have been more enjoyable had the world and characters been more developed in a longer read.
What I did find was well depicted was the fact that should there be a scientific breakthrough as such, we, as a society, would most certainly distort its purpose and turn it into a business.

The Other Einstein - Marie Benedict

RESEÑAREVIEWCuando empecé este libro no estaba al tanto de que estaba escrito como una novela de ficción acerca de la vida de Mileva y lo yo esperaba leer algo más biográfico. Siento que esa decisión le quitó seriedad al texto porque uno no sabe qué cosas son reales y cuáles fueron inventadas o modificadas para que quedaran mejor en esa clase de historia.
La autora enfocó la historia en el cliché de "la mujer detrás del gran hombre" y me parece que este libro podría haber sido mucho más interesante si hubiera seguido la vida de Mileva independientemente de Einstein, en lugar de que él fuera el centro y que cada evento de la vida de ella pareciera girar en torno a él.
Lamentablemente no obtuve lo que esperaba leer. Yo buscaba una historia inspiradora acerca de una mujer independiente con personalidad fuerte que logró entrar a la universidad y estudiar en el exterior en el 1800 en un establecimiento que en el que era la única estudiante femenina.
También me sentí que la investigación no era muy confiable desde el punto en que la misma autora aclara que los hechos contenidos en el texto pueden o no ser exactos o incluso verdaderos.

Fecha de publicación: 18/10/2016I went into this book unaware of the fact that is was written as a fictionalized account of the events in Mileva's life and I was expecting it to be more biographical. I feel like that  was a wrong decision because it is impossible to know which facts are real and which have been modified or invented to better suit that kind of story,
The author focused on the cliché of  "the woman behind a great man" and I believe this book would have been far more interesting if it had followed Mileva's life separately from Einstein rather than using him as the center of the story around whom everything seemed to have happened.
Unfortunately, I didn't get what I was hoping to read, which was an inspiring story about an independent woman with a strong personality who managed to get into College to study abroad in the 1800s being the only female student.
I also felt that the research was not strong, because even the author herself states that much of what she is telling throughout the book may or may not be accurate or true.

Light by Rob Cham

RESEÑAREVIEWEsta es una hermosa novela gráfica en blanco y negro y "muda" llena de ilustraciones tiernas, particularmente los dos personajes principales. Seguimos al protagonista en una misión: encontrar gemas de colores para un fin inesperado que se revela en la última página.
El concepto temático del blanco y negro mudo me hizo acordar mucho a Emigrantes de Shaun Tan y a White Collar de Giacomo Patri (enlace a la reseña más abajo). Sin embargo, es muy diferente a ambos dos.

Me muero de ganas de conseguir la segunda parte de la serie: Lost.

Being in black and white and wordless, it reminded me a lot of the Arrival by Shaun Tan and White Collar by Giacomo Patri (review link below), being different at the same time.

I'm dying to get my hands on the second one of the series: Lost.

Magic Unveiled: An Anthology - Various Authors

RESEÑAREVIEWEsta es una antología que está muy bien creada porque ofrece una buena variedad de estilos e historias en cuanto a la magia. Definitivamente obtuve lo que siempre espero de las antologías y colecciones, que es poder disfrutar de diferentes miradas de una misma temática y, además, descubrir nuevos autores que me despierten interés en leer más de su obra.
Me sorprende que, en este caso, no hubo una historia que pueda decir que no me gustó, cosa que casi siempre sucede con esta clase de libro.
Mis historias preferidas fueron :
- Gypsum Jane's Inkscapes de H. M. Jones (5 estrellas). Un tatuador que acaba de perder a su madre logra comunicarse con ella gracias a su pasión: los tatuajes.

- Journey Into A New Home Jayme Beddingfield (4,5 stars). Una joven que ama dibujar (pero no es muy buena) crea una imagen del lugar en el que ella y su madre enferma se sentirían más felices, pero... ¿se trata tan solo un simple dibujo?

Fecha de publicación: 13/10/2016This is a well constructed anthology because of the variety both in styles and storylines that can be found in it. I definitely got what I always look for in anthologies and collections, which is to enjoy different takes on a given subject and to discover new authors who spark my interest in their work.
Suprisingly, there wasn't a story that I would say I didn't like, which is something that almost always happens woth this kind of book.

My personal favorites were :
- Gypsum Jane's Inkscapes by H. M. Jones (to which I gave 5 stars). A tattoo artist has just lost his mother and is able to communicate with her thanks to what he loves: tattoos.

- Journey Into A New Home by Jayme Beddingfield (to which I gave 4,5 stars). A young woman who loves drawing -but is not good at it- creates a picture of the place where both she and her dying mother are happiest. But is it just a drawing?

A Life in Parts - Bryan Cranston

RESEÑAREVIEWEsta es la autobiografía más completa y personal que leí. Lo que más me gustó fue que el lector se puede identificar con Cranston en muchos aspectos de su vida y en varias de sus vivencias (muchas de ellas momentos difíciles). Además me pareció muy interesante el formato de la "historia" porque se puede apreciar cómo un niño rebelde de una familia inestable que pasó por muchas clases diferentes de trabajos logró llegar al estrellato, sin dejar de ser un padre de familia amoroso. ¿Cuál es su secreto? Perseverancia y dedicación.

Este libro es para:
- Todo aquel que esté interesado en una muy buena autobiografía que no es acartonada, pesada y aburrida como la mayoría.
- Personas interesadas en cómo fue la Vida de Bryan Cranston y cómo logró transitar su camino hacia el éxito en Hollywood.
- Fans de - Fans of Breaking Bad y/o Malcolm in the Middle (hay algunos datos curiosos y poco conocidos de ambos shows).
- Los que disfrutan de lecturas inspiradoras o de leer acerca de alguien que nunca se rindió y siempre persiguió su sueño.
- Actores que quieren aprender cómo crear personajes y de qué herramientas deben valerse para  poder lograrlo.

En conclusión: este libro es para toda persona en busca de una autobiografía inspiradora acerca de cómo un hombre como cualquiera se ganó su lugar en Hollywood con trabajo duro y perseverancia.

What I enjoyed the most about it was the relatability to Cranston's life and struggles the text provides and how it shows his path from a rebel kid from an unstable family circle, to multiple jobs and trades and into a successful actor who is also a loving father and husband. The key to his success in life? Perseverance and hard work.

For whom this book is for:
- Anyone in the lookout for a great autobiography that doesn't feel stiff and is in no way dragging or boring.
- People interested in learning about Bryan Cranston's personal life and his rise into stardom in Hollywood.
- Fans of Breaking Bad and/or Malcolm in the Middle (there is considerable insight and  also unknown facts thrown here and there).
 - Those who like reading inspirational books or reading stories about not giving up, working hard and following your dreams.
- (Aspiring) actors wanting to learn how to build a characters and which tools to use.

In conclusion: this book is for anyone looking for an inspiring autobiography about a man who earned his way into Hollywood and how he got there.

The Many Lives of Fitzwilliam Darcy - Beau North

RESEÑAREVIEW¡Al fin llegó mi primera reseña de 5 estrellas al blog!

En esta versión de Orgullo y Prejuicio cuando el Sr. Darcy le propone matrimonio a Elizabeth Bennet ella lo rechaza. ¡¿Qué?! Sí, eso mismo. Pero la historia recién empieza. Él tiene que revivir ese  día nefasto e intentar descubrir una manera de cambiar el rumbo de su vida, y quizás el de otros también.

Debo confesar que, como fan de Orgullo y Prejuicio, dudé en solicitar este libro por miedo, pero me alegra haberlo hecho. Esa e una de las mejores versiones nuevas que leí porque se mantuvo el tono y la historia base, trabajando el giro alrededor de la historia original y no por sobre ella. Además, los diálogos y narración son muy parecidos a los de Jane Austen (algo muy difícil de lograr). Por lo tanto quiero ofrecer mis felicitaciones por lo antedicho porque no es fácil crear una nueva versión, especialmente cuando la obra original es un clásico.

In this retelling of Pride and Prejudice Mr. Darcy proposes to Elizabeth Bennet and she refuses. What?! Yes, you read right. But that's not all. He has to relive that ill-fated day and try to figure out a way to change the course of his life and perhaps other people's as well.

I have to admit that, being a hardcore fan of P&P, I was hesitant and afraid to request this book for review, but I am really glad I did. It is one of the best retellings I've read because the tone and main story are kept as is, and the twist is worked around it and not over it, thus being respectful to the original work. Moreover, the dialogues and narration felt considerably similar to Austen's, which is no easy task. So congratulations on all of the above because retellings are the hardest books to pull off, particularly those based on literary classics.
