I Talked to an Agent (and didn’t die)
While at the Oregon Christian Writer’s conference a few weeks ago, I did something totally insane and crazy. (Actually, I did several insane, crazy things, but one in particular will be taking over this blog post).
Abi and I totally pressured each other into pitching to agents. We told each other that it would be great practice. We would expect absolutely nothing. It was more of a nerve-buster thing–should we ever want to actually pitch for real in the future, we would have had experience. We would regret it later if we didn’t do it.
We told each other these things. (over and over and over XD ). Abi stayed up late with me and helped me prepare a pitch.
(Really late. We were sooooo giggly by the time we finally rolled into bed. XD )
A post shared by Ivy Rose (@authorivyrose) on Aug 16, 2017 at 11:44pm PDT
And we did it. She went before me (a whole day before me *grins*), so she was able to tell me to calm down. Chill out. Agents are humans, too.
I pitched a book. To a real agent.
Not just to any agent, though. To Jim Hart, of Hartline Literary Agency. (Random amazing fact: he’s Sara Ella’s agent.) This was kind of a big deal. *lowkey screams*
After the time-keeper bell rang, I marched myself into the “writing room” of the conference and found Mr. Hart’s table. I introduced myself, and he asked me a few basic questions. Not scary. ;) After just a few minutes, my heart rate returned to normal.
I don’t know how the appointment actually went. I’d never done it before, so I had absolutely no idea what to expect or what the norm was for these things. Whatever the case may be, I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Mr. Hart.
To say the least, I was shocked when Mr. Hart said he was interested. He asked for a proposal and the first three chapters. He said he would seriously consider taking me on.
When the appointment was over, I walked out of the room in a daze. Scratching my head. For all I know, he could say that to everybody. Even so, I was super, amazingly, unbelievably excited. This little nobody, indie-published novice was absolutely floating on a cloud of wonder and disbelief. He was actually interested in my story!!!
The more I thought about it, however the more I questioned myself. The plan I thought I had. The way things have been going as of late.
I’m a very content indie-author. I wasn’t looking for a traditional publishing deal. I didn’t go to the conference with the intention of talking to an agent. It wasn’t my idea.
Yet it seems like God has dropped this opportunity in my lap and said “here, you get to pick.” And I do. I get to pick between becoming a hybrid author, or sticking with indie.
(And yes, I’m very aware that nothing could come of this. I could send the proposal and be rejected. But the whole situation got me thinking. :-) )
The hardest part about this opportunity? There is no right or wrong answer. There’s not even a “good” and a “great” here. It’s just “amazing” and “amazing.” Both traditional and indie publishing are fantastic options.
After so much prayer, seeking the council of friends and family, and a whole lot of excited squealing, I’ve decided to go ahead and send a proposal to Mr. Hart.
Maybe nothing will come of it. And that’s OKAY. I didn’t go into the appointment with the hope of an offer, so all of this is just for fun. Do I hope to be offered a contract? Kind of. Part of me is scared to venture into an entirely different type of publishing. I’m very, very happy right where I am at the moment.
The adventure-loving side of me is super excited to see what God does with this. The practical, logical side is trying to weigh all the pros and cons.
Most of all, I’m crazy excited to see what God is going to do. Maybe nothing will come out of this particular appointment, but it’s not hard to see all the things He’s doing in my life. I can’t wait to see where this next bend in the road puts me.

Results of the Beta-Reader Applications
This is the hardest part. Choosing. Picking. I LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH I HATE TO ONLY PICK 5!!!
Let me begin by saying THANK YOU to all the applicants. I was shocked and blessed beyond belief with how many applications I received! Picking just five is HARD!!! I had a few levels of “screening” before the actual reading test, and only a few people made it that far.
If you didn’t, please don’t think it’s because I don’t like you. That’s not the case AT ALL. I love each and every one of you SO much and hope to continue fostering friendships. :)
The five beta slots have been filled by:
Congratulations to the new team members, and thank you so much to all of those who applied!!!

Why I’m Not Starting School Now (and why I’m okay with it)
Fair warning–this is more of a journal entry, piece-of-my-heart post. ;)
THE DREAM
College has been an aspiration of mine for forever. My junior-high and high-school years were filled with the anticipation of being almost done. Almost ready to start working on the degree and get into the career I’ve wanted for so long.
I graduated right on time. Started college classes a few days later. Studied ten months straight and earned more than 20 credits. That whole time, I was slowly burning out. Very slowly.
I didn’t realize how physically sick I was becoming.
To be honest, the workload I had was nothing spectacular. Nothing crazy. I didn’t feel like I was pushing myself. But what I didn’t realize is that my chronic illness were playing a huge part in my abilities (or lack thereof).
THE CRASH
I ignored the fact that I was getting tired. I pulled a lot of late nights, early mornings, and super long study sessions. Not even because I wanted a good grade. I’m pretty much the worst example ever of a ‘perfect student’ ever (“C’s get degrees” is my mantra ;-) ) . But school was intense, and I did what I had to to get it done.
Without realizing it, I was getting sicker and sicker. I struggled with a bit of depression, physical challenges, and more health issues and I thought I would ever have to deal with. My parents encouraged me to take a break after my winter semester. (January-March), which I did.
All the while feeling like a horrible lazy bum that I couldn’t even finish out my freshman year. (Which was a lie … I did finish credit-wise, but not mentally.)
But as soon as I stopped pushing myself, I realize just how sick I was. My body was just done. Since it’s already fighting every day, the extra strain of college eventually tipped me over the edge. My body was in a constant struggle against sickness.
THE PAUSE
So I rested. I slept, a lot. Read, wrote, enjoyed life.
During that time, I continually prayed for God’s guidance. That He would tell me what I needed to do. That He would give me the physical endurance to make it through another year of school. That He would help me figure out a way to cash-flow nursing school.
With a lot of prayer, talking to parents, and seeking wisdom from a variety of people, a few things became clear:
1. Cash-flowing nursing school is pretty much impossible, especially at my age with minimal work experience/savings.
2. I’m not physically capable of going to school and doing clinicals at this time.
3. Maybe nursing school isn’t what I’m supposed to be doing right now.
I’ll be honest, all of these are hard to swallow. Hard to think of. It’s frustrating that my body isn’t cooperating well enough for me to do what I’ve been looking forward to for years.
For months, I’ve wondered why. Why is this happening? I had everything completely planned. Completely ready. The timeline was perfect. It was all going to work.
But God said no.
Maybe He isn’t saying “no” forever, but He’s saying it now. Yes, it’s hard to stomach. It’s hard putting hopes, dreams, and desires on hold. I cried. I was mad. And that’s okay. Trust me, it’s a lot better to deal with emotions in the moment rather than stuff them down. (Speaking from experience here. ;) )
What I didn’t expect was the opportunities that came along. Pausing one element of my life made me a lot more open to other options.
THE ADJUSTMENT
Getting healthy is my first priority. And guess what? It’s a lot easier to rest and recuperate without school deadlines looming over my head. (Imagine that… XD )
But it’s hard to realize that this would be my sophomore year of college. It’s easy to feel guilty, like I’m just being lazy.
It’s hard to realize that maybe what I want to do isn’t what God wants me to do.
But isn’t it always? Won’t there always be things in our life that don’t go like we think it will?
God never promises an easy, straightforward life. What He does promise, however, is that He’ll be there every step of the way. (Isaiah 41:13)
THE PLAN
For the next few months, I get to put my energy into writing, working, and enjoying my family. I have time to explore new ideas, time to improve on the things I already do, and time to have fun. My second leg surgery will also get thrown in somewhere in these next few months.
I’m enjoying putting most of my focus on my current writing project and some exciting prospects with it. (like an agent who may be interested…. *cheesy grin*)
I’m enjoying living life. Watching movies with my siblings. Hanging out with friends. Attacking my TBR pile before it falls on me.
Most of all, I’m enjoying not having much of a plan.
Do I want to go back to school? Absolutely. Most definitely. Do I have a definitive timeline? Nope. I’m hoping for January, but not promising myself.
For now, I’m choosing to enjoy this downtime God has given me. I’ll ask for His direction in the next phase of life. And I’ll enjoy pursuing the opportunities He’s placed before me with a whole new level of joy.

Oregon Christian Writers / Road Trippin’ / Abi’s Visit
SO MUCH STUFF TO PACK INTO ONE LITTLE POST!!!! *dies*
Actually, this post is not going to be small. Or short. At all. Prepare yourself.
-WHAT I LEARNED-
1 / Conferences are the best encouragement ever. Between the speakers, new friends, and mentors, conferences are absolutely chock-full of encouragement.
2/ Make connections. This is probably the just extrovert in me, but I love talking to people and making friends. Having a support system during the general hobbitness of writing is such a massive necessity, yet most of us don’t realize how much we NEED OTHER PEOPLE. Even though writing is a pretty solitary career, we’re all humans and need contact with the world outside our imaginations. Having writer friends to chat with when the writing gets rough is completely awesome.
3/ I’m an ambivert. I kinda already knew this because I come out either an ENFP or an INFP each time I take the Myers-Briggs personality test…but I didn’t realize how much my introvert side effects me! I was TANKED by the end of the conference, and even during, I found myself aching for a few moments of quiet. However, I do have this weird ability to ‘shut down’ and find a quiet place in the midst of a lot of people. Henceforth, I claim to be an ANFP. ;)
4/ Christ MUST be the center of our writing. I’ve been to Christian writing conferences before, but the Oregon Christian Writers is on a completely different level. Starting and ending each day with worship. Most sessions also started and ended with prayer. The spiritual focus of this conference was like no other. It was like being in the best church ever for three solid days. I was not expecting this level of spiritual instruction, yet I needed it so much.
-THE TRAVELS-
The day after Abigayle Claire arrived, she, Emily McConnell and I loaded up in the car and began the long(ish) drive to Portland, OR.
Before we left
Road-trippin’ together is so much fun!!!! Not only do you learn a lot about one another (MWAHAHAHA), but it’s such wonderful un-interupted talk time. We jabbed the entire 6 hour drive.
-THE CONFERENCE-
Our days at the conference were filled with smiles, concentration, laughter, studious-note-taking, making new friends, and SO MUCH MORE that I’ll never be able to fit it all in here. But here’s a little taste. :)
Shortly after this photo was taken, a rather large spider crawled over my notebook and stared at me for several seconds before my sluggish brain registered that there was A SPIDER ON MY NOTEBOOK!!!!! Needless to say, spidey died shortly thereafter. (and i did not scream. *nodnod* )
Emily McConnell, Megan Wilcox, and I.
Abi and meeeeeee!!!!!! We were still trying to figure out what end of the phone to look at while taking a selfie… XD
Such good little students we are… (ha ha ha)
In the middle of the second day, we all got the urge for some junk food. Lots of junk food. Mercifully, there was a grocery store just across from where the conference took place, so we skipped over there on break and bought enough candy to last the rest of the conference behaved like the responsible adults we are.
Jill Williamson and I
Notice the pretzels. Food is important, guys. I lost track of how many baggies of snacks we consumed, but it was a lot. ;)
-HEALTH-
It’s still a little weird for me to talk about my health so publicly. For so long, my chronic illnesses are something that I’ve kept to myself and not really wanted to share. But they’re such a huge part of me–not always in a bad way–and I want to share ME with YOU.
I went to the conference already fatigued from almost two solid weeks of company. While I enjoyed all of our visitors in that time, I can’t ignore the fact that it exhausted me. (But sometimes, that’s the cost of fun, and it’s OKAY.) The issue was that since I was already ‘compromised,’ I knew my endurance was going to be less for the conference.
I did have a bit of a rough go. Thank goodness, adrenaline helps a lot, as does caffeine. But mostly, Emily and Abi were what helped me make it through. They didn’t make me feel guilty for needing to rest. They weren’t offended by the fact that I sometimes needed to sit on the floor in the back of the room rather than at a table with them. Even though I didn’t ask them to, they both kept a close eye on me and would frequently ask how I was doing. They would tell me when I was crashing. (sometimes I don’t notice the crash until it’s too late)
Another thing I appreciated so much about Emily and Abi was their patience and incredible support! We had to run to a store several times for me to grab some forgotten medical things, but never once did they show any irritation. I wouldn’t have blamed them if they had! But they only showed support and love. That means SO MUCH TO ME.
Other than the fact that Emily and Abi both know me very well and are incredibly compassionate, this meme is totally accurate.
There was even a time when I dislocated my finger while cutting meat (that’s EDS for ya) and Emily was kind enough to cut it for me. (After we laughed. We must laugh about these things. If we don’t laugh, we cry. Laughter is much better.)
I’m so blessed to have friends like Emily and Abi!!!!
-THE PEOPLE-
While I didn’t get as many pictures with people as I’d wanted to, I managed to snag a few here and there.
Frank Peretti
Tessa Afshar
Jill Williamson
Melanie Dobson
-THE BEACH-
The Oregon Coast has been a favorite vacation destination of my family for many years. I feel like the sandy shores, sunshine, and crashing waves hold a huge part of my heart. Spending a few hours there with my friends was the best!
SO PRETTY!!!! *heart eyes*
Selfie and flyaway hair. The struggle is real.
Emily and I
How adorable is Abi?????
Shadows and waves
Emily somehow managed to keep her jeans dry even with all the fun she had in the water.
Can I just say I’m impressed with iPhone pictures????
Abi and meeee…..trying not to shiver too much. XD Beaches are cold up here, ya’ll.
-MY FAVORITE MOMENTS-
late-night chats with Emily and Abi
praying with some pretty incredible authors
pitching to an agent (who is now interested in my current WIP–more on this later!!!)
getting two fantastic mentor sessions with amazing people
deep discussions
movie nights with Abi
exploring a cemetery and choosing some new character names (with Abi)
listening to a certain person “suck mango brains”
laughing so hard I cried
eating so much candy, coffee, soda … ugh. XD
going to the beach
brainstorming Abi’s incredible new story
learning how to personality-type characters
enjoying just being together
discussions opinions on weddings
stealing Emily’s hat
and so much more!!!!
~~~~
This post has taken long enough to write so I’d better stop now. XD Kudos for making it this far!!!
Have you ever met any of your writer friends? Are you going to (or have you) gone to a writer’s conference?
Exiles by Jaye L. Knight / / Review
I’m so excited to be a part of the release for Exiles!!! Jaye is one of my favorite authors and I’m so glad to be able to help with the release of this amazing book.
About the Book
Exiled after their defeat in Samara, the Resistance struggles to find allies in their quest to restore King Balen to his throne and put an end to the emperor’s tyranny. When the crete people refuse to lend their aid, Balen leads a group to Dorland to reason with them and win their support. However, enemies prove to be everywhere, and they find themselves in a fight to keep Dorland from becoming Daican’s latest conquest.
Back in Landale, the arrival of a new enemy forces Trask and Anne to tread more carefully than ever. Tensions are rising, and the enemy is determined to test Anne’s loyalty and root out the location of Trask and the Resistance once and for all.
Feeling trapped within the walls of Valcré, Prince Daniel must contend with an ever-eroding relationship with his father. As their clashes escalate, the situation becomes potentially life threatening when his loyalty is called into question. His sister seems bent on branding him a traitor and actively seeking to condemn him to the fate of those put to death in their father’s new arena. Daniel is certain his father would never execute his only son and heir but, with other forces at work, it might not be that simple.
One small misstep could prove fatal for all.
My Review
Since this book promised more of Prince Daniel’s story–I’ll be brutally honest–I wasn’t terribly excited. Daniel was never a favorite character, and I didn’t care too much about what happened to him. But Jaye masterfully wove Daniel’s tale within streaks from our other favorite characters, and I soon found myself loving him just as much. There was a lot in this book that made me have to step back and breathe for a long minute, thinking “I SO did not see that coming.” Especially the ending!!! EEEKKKKKK!!!!
Something I didn’t like so much was how slow the first half of the book was. It reminded me a little of Resistance in that I wasn’t glued to the book. Don’t get me wrong, it was good, but it wasn’t absolutely gripping.
Enter the halfway point.
*screams*
You’ll need a seatbelt, believe me. It was nonstop action from there on out! So many unexpecteds. So many surprises. So many shocks. Oh my heart.
Overall, I recommend this book (and the rest of the series) 100%. YOU. MUST. READ. IT. *shoves towards books*
The Search Begins
Being a beta reader is an exciting prospect!!! I ask that you please read this post in its entirety before applying to ensure understanding for both of us. Thank you!
I told you I would be looking for permanent beta readers last month, and now, I’m ready to begin the search!
First of all, I’m looking for very specific things in betas. Also, I’m looking for people who mesh well with me and my style. If I don’t think you’ll be a good fit, please, don’t be offended! It’s nothing against you personally, I just don’t think our styles will match.
To be honest, I have been absolutely burned by multiple cruel critiques over the years. I’m embarrassed to say that those experiences have actually made me quite fearful about sharing my work with others, to the point where I dread even the thought of asking for beta readers. But I know I need betas!
So here, we have an issue. And this is where I cower in a corner and ask that you please be sweet and kind in all of your critiques of other people’s work–not just mine! No, I’m not saying that you have to be sickeningly sweet or say things that aren’t true, but there is absolutely a way to point out the flaws in someone’s work without being unkind about it. *rant over*
Here are some things I’m looking for in beta readers:
Experience.
This is a toughie, because I know a lot of people (myself included ;) ) volunteer to be betas just so they can read a book before the rest of the world sees it. That’s not the type of person I’m looking for (if you want that, sign up to be an advanced reader for me! :) ). I want the folks on my beta team to have some experience in writing, and even better, to have a particular strength they can offer me.
A love for many different genres.
Because I write in so many genres, I need betas who are okay being flexible. Having a team of betas for each genre isn’t gonna work, unfortunately. ;) To give you an idea, I’ve written historical fiction, contemporary fiction, biblical fiction, and dystopia.
Time for a friendship.
Yes, you are investing a lot of your time in me and my writing by being a beta, but I’m also investing my time in you! I don’t want people who will read the book, tell me what’s wrong with it, then disappear until the next book needs to be read. Nope nope nope. I want to be your friend! You’re helping me SO much, please let me invest time in YOU, as well. That can be something as small as interacting in comments, but it’s still time. I don’t appreciate shallow relationships.
Kindness in critiques.
I talked about this above and I don’t want to be ridiculous about it, but this is something that is really, REALLY important to me. I want constructive criticism, but it’s not okay for that right to be abused. Don’t be afraid to tell me how I can improve–I truly want to improve my writing!!–but please don’t be rude about it. :)
Commitment.
I need a team. A team of reliable people, who aren’t going to duck out after a month or two. Of course, I’m not going to chain you to helping me (I’m not quite that mean ;-) ), but I would appreciate it if you are prepared to stick with me for awhile.
Note: Not wanting to read one particular project, being too busy at the time to do so, family/personal emergencies, etc. are a separate issue. I promise I won’t be holding a whip over ya’ll! :)
Now that you made it through all of that, here’s some information for YOU! :D
You don’t have to read every book! For each book, I’ll be sending out emails introducing the book, providing a blurb, and linking to a google doc of the first chapter. If you don’t think the book is something you’d enjoy, or you don’t have time to beta, or…anything! Don’t feel strapped to a contract. I promise, I won’t be mad if you simply don’t want to read one of my books. :)
There will be times when I ask that you not reveal (online) that you are beta-ing one of my books. I’m already planning a few “surprise” releases, so I’ll need your help keeping secrets from the public. ;-) (Oh yeah, this is very much an “insider” thing. ;) )
I’ll always give a time limit for beta-ing projects, which can be anywhere from two weeks to a month.
Tis is an application/tryout process. I’ll be reading everyone’s applications, sending out a chapter or two, and deciding from there.
The biggest thing to note is that I’m only opening FIVE SLOTS. Only 5 new peeps get to join my beta team. It’s gonna be so hard to choose!!!!!!!
Let me say one thing after all of that: PLEASE DON’T BE SCARED . I promise I’m not a mean, scary person. :D
If you think we would work well together and would like to like to apply, please fill out this google form! I’ll be closing it on August 19th.
Andora’s Folly Blog Tour / / by Abigayle Claire
My amazing critique partner released another book! And it’s so beautiful in SO MANY WAYS. If you like pretty-to-look-at books or pretty-to-read-books, this is definitely for you. *heart eyes*
SYNOPSIS
A Pandora’s Box retelling
Andora is a beautiful young woman with insatiable curiosity. Raised in splendor, she is spoiled by her privileged life. When a love letter is slid under her door, her life takes a drastically unromantic turn. Nothing makes sense—her arranged marriage, the gifts her parents bestow on her wedding day, or her new husband’s temperament.
As Andora begins to unravel the mysteries around her, she ignites a chain of events that have the power to sabotage her entire village forever. Only her new-found wisdom as a desperate peasant’s wife can save her from her folly.
MY REVIEW
When I heard my dear friend and critique partner was releasing a second book so close to her debut–I gave her a pat on the back and wished her luck.
No, kidding. I’m not that mean. ;) I BEGGED to be allowed to read the book, which Abi was all too kind to oblige.
Andora’s Folly is a beautiful twist of a classic fairy tale/myth. My favorite part about Abi’s adaption was the Christian elements. She is a master at weaving Biblical teachings and strong morals without being preachy. Though the feel of this book is quite different from Abi’s debut novel, I enjoyed it just as much. Andora was easy to connect with, and the prologue—eeekkkk!!! It was one of my favorite chapters! Instantly, I was immersed in Andora’s world, captured by Abi’s beautiful descriptors and engaging prose. Don’t miss out on this sweet retelling!
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Abigayle has been a writer ever since her mother taught her how to hold a pencil. However, she devoted more time to reading words with her green eyes than writing them with her left hand. Inspired by a crazy dream at the age of seventeen, she set off on a journey to self-publish her first novel, Martin Hospitality. Since then, Abigayle has devoted herself to sharing what she has learned through the mediums of freelance editing, and her blog theleft-handedytpist.blogspot.com … when period drama films are not calling more loudly. None of her successes would be possible without the support of her Savior, large family, and online community.
