Oregon Christian Writer’s Conference 2018 [vlog]
I’ve been to quite a few conferences, so I can say with certainty that OCW is one of my favorites. It’s my “home” conference. Even though I don’t really know very many people there, it’s the type of place with the kind of people that make feeling comfortable so easy.
This was my second year at OCW, and I definitely see myself going back again. And again and again. I vlogged this year, and it’s a longggg vlog!!! :D But you know, between family emergencies and the car almost not making it home, it’s an exciting 20 minutes.

~Talk to me~
Does anyone else wanna cry after spending money at Starbucks? Can you see me “being calm” when the car is acting weird? (my calm voice isn’t quite as normal as I hoped. ;) )

Indie eCon Scavenger Hunt 2018 – Stop #17
This stop of the tour introduces us to Erica Laurie!
List of Books that Shaped Me as an Author
안녕하세요 (Hello.) I’m Erica Laurie, and I’m one of the Indie e-con Scavenger hunt authors. I
selected the topic of a list of books that shaped me an author. As many writers are, I’m an avid
reader. I wasn’t at first though. I remember struggling with reading. Phonics was hard. After the
death of my sister I buried myself in books. Titles like Beat the Turtle Drum, A Summer to Die,
and Nobody’s Fault spoke to me. I devoured everything I could from children’s author Laura
Ingalls Wilder, to young adult author Lurlene McDaniels, to such epic fantasy writers as JRR
Tolkien and Dennis L. McKiernan. As an adult I went on to read Regency Romances with
Sarah M. Eden becoming one of my all-time favorite authors.

The Stories Scars Tell
Scars.
Emotional scars, physical scars; everyone has them. Some remain hidden, some can’t be ignored. Some serve as reminders, others as a painful memory.
For as long as I can remember, I thought scars were cool. I loved hearing the stories behind them. I had my own collection from a very young age (#DareDevilProblems), but none of them had cool stories. And besides, the scars were small, hidden–they would eventually fade.
Last year, that changed. Two major surgeries gave me two major scars that will never completely fade away. One on each leg, just below my knees, 6 inches long. Not exactly what any girl wants at nineteen.
But it wasn’t a huge deal last year–during the summer I only had one scar from the first surgery, and it was so new I had to keep it covered with bandages all the time. Then, you know, legging and sweats all winter long … *guilty smile* Now the weather is getting warmer. Shorts are coming out, tights are going back in the closet, band-aids are off the scars …
Everyone can see them.
Contrary to popular belief, I don’t wear my heart on my sleeve. I come across as a very open person, which IS true, but I can be quite private about some things. And for whatever reason, my confidence plummets when others see my scars.
I honestly don’t know why. I’m proud of those marks. Proud of the journey I went through to get them. But I’m not quite ready to show them off to just anyone. There is still a lot of fresh, raw pain attached to those scars. Even though it was a physical procedure, there was a lot of emotional damage, also. Memories that still hurt to relieve. Reminders that come back every time someone asks “what happened to your legs?”
As hard as it still is, I’m grateful for those scars. The permanent reminder of how great God is, how merciful He is, and what He protected me from. (Most of which I haven’t talked about publicly). The scars on my legs are a testament to being forever changed–physically and spiritually. I wish I was able to tell everyone who asks “what happened to your legs” the entire story of what God did, because it’s amazing. He’s amazing.
I think it’s quite funny that the scar on my right leg is significantly worse than the one on my left. Yet that alone tells such a story — the right leg surgery was an incredibly tough recovery, and the left one, comparably, was far easier. The scars reflect that.
Whatever it is you’re going through, whatever scars you have from the past, don’t be ashamed of them. Wear those badges of honor proudly. It doesn’t matter how “ugly” they are–they’re yours. God doesn’t give us scars without a reason.
If you want to share, I would love to hear what scars you have. Send me an email through the contact form or leave it in the comments below.
~Ivy
