Welcome New Kitten

We adopted a new kitten. He was already named Guillermo, and there is no way I'm changing that awesome name! Say hi, everyone!

No Mow May

I came home to my lawn in full bloom. We've decided to help the bees and wait until June to mow.

We're hardening our seedlings for planting as well. Yay Spring!

Perfect End

On our way home from New York, we stopped in Cleveland to visit with an old friend.

Beautiful views of Lake Erie.

Upstate NY Research Trip Day 9

Today, I finally got to see Lyndhurst.

It was interesting to learn about the people who lived there, even though I couldn't help but wonder how much good for humanity they could have done instead of building such an opulent house that they didn't even spend most of their time in.

But for my purposes, it helped with my research. I could rattle on about who they were, how they got their money, etc. But I w...

Upstate NY Research Trip Day 8

Today was a very full day. We spent the day in Sleepy Hollow.

We started at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and the old Dutch Church. I've been to quite a few notable cemeteries, and I have to say that this is the most pleasant cemetery I've ever been in. Hills covered in tall grasses, old stones with names so weathered they can't even be read, a bubbling steam nearby, and paths covered in pink and white tree petals. It was rainy and the whole place smelled of lavender and lilac. What a lovely spot ...

Upstate NY Research Trip Day 7

Today was another travel day. We left Syracuse this morning and drove down to Tarrytown.

The drive was absolutely gorgeous. Rivers winding through wooded hills, already green with leaves. Steep rockfaces on either side of the road, their strata angled in easily distinguishable layers. I wish I could show you pictures, but it was rainy and the pictures through the car windows didn't really turn out.

Tarrytown is barely ten miles away from New York City, and I was struck by the fact that it's st...

Upstate NY Research Trip Day 6

We left Alexandria Bay this morning and traveled down to Syracuse, where we went to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. It wasn't a big zoo, but it was decently sized enough that we spent a couple of hours there.

I have to say, I've never seen turtles or sloths that were this active. They were practically having a party.

After the zoo, we went to visit my relative Cathy, whom I met for the first time today. Stopping in Syracuse is very special to me because my mother's whole sid...

Upstate NY Research Trip Day 5

I can't believe the things I do in the name of a writing a good story. Last night, I barely slept. My IBS was acting up, and I had some really weird dreams (I blame the hot-dog potato). Despite still feeling like trash this morning, I got up and got ready to go on the Uncle Sam's Boat Tour to Singer Castle.

I usually try to sit on the top deck (the outside deck) when on a boat because I get seasick otherwise (let's face it, I get seasick regardless). But it was raining and super cold, so I suff...
