Getting Back Into It

Summer, soggy as it was, is almost over and I feel the tug of school around the corner, pulling me back into the classroom. Is this a good thing, as a writer? Ultimately, I think that yes — it is! There is something about having too much time on my hands that almost makes me less productive. It's almost as though I need the pressure of lesson plans, essays to mark, students to meet to make me crave, dream and long for the refuge of my own writing.

Like a squirrel, I store away the nuts of my ...

Children's Lit: Crimes and Misdemeanors

I have just come back from a fabulous children's lit conference at Simmon's College in Boston. So many great and inspiring writers spoke about their work, politics, and about the absolute importance of offering quality stories to young readers. The theme was "crimes and misdemeanors" and writers interpreted this in many interesting ways. I am going to try to sum up some of the highlights.

Children's Book Week Tour

It's official: I am going to Manitoba in November, for Book Week. I am thrilled. So many of my favourite authors, for adults and for teens, come from that province. It must be such a creative place. My mentor, Fran Davis, who was my very first creative writing teacher lives there too, so I will get to hang out...

I can't believe my book launch was already one month ago and I am just getting around to writing about it. The launch, which was graciously and beautifully hosted by Livres Babar Books in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, was such a thrilling evening for me. I am not someone who is used to being the centre of attention, or who particularly likes being there, but I have to say . . . I did enjoy it on May 28th. I find I go into surreal, pinch-me, mode at times like that. Like, all these people are here...

All my wonderful students

Hey folks! This is my very first ever blog. I have finally joined the 21st century. People say writers need blogs, and I have resisted until now, but I can resist no longer. So … here goes.

I'd like to dedicate my first blog entry to all the wonderful students I taught and met last year. First off, I taught my very first Creative Writing for Children at John Abbott College, where I work. I was blown away by the talent of my students. We worked on picture books (which are oh so hard to write), ...
