Don’t Let this Virus Define You

t’s been three months since I wrote my last blog post about my husband passing away.  I’ve been grieving.  I’ve experienced many strong emotions: disbelief, profound sadness, loneliness, depression, etc…  I couldn’t sleep, found it hard to concentrate on work and lost the energy and motivation to workout.  I just hurt so much.

Time helps.  Many people told me that it just takes time and that I should be patient with myself.  They were right.  Today I’m doing better.  Time passed, and my head clea...

Adopt-a-Mentor Approach Better Than Direct Ask

Aspiring young professionals sometimes become overly aggressive in seeking mentors.  Last week, I received an email from someone I had never met asking if I would serve as her mentor.  Despite being a mentor to many, I don’t recall anyone ever asking in such a direct, impersonal manner.  The best mentoring relationships just happen. They’re not over orchestrated.

Over the past five years, I’ve written several posts about mentoring, including topics such as mentor etiquette and how to properly tap...

Caring is Sharing: Show your compassion for others during this very challenging time

Shellye-Archambeau-1.jpg

“Noel, caring is sharing!” my five-year old granddaughter reprimands her three-year old sister, who doesn’t want to share her toy.  It’s a mantra my daughter uses to teach her children. As I witness this exchange while I “shelter in place” with them in Tampa, Florida, it strikes me that the whole world needs to be reminde...

It’s all about the Teamwork

People say it’s all about the team.  You will hear that often.  Many leaders focus on getting the best talent, but the quality of each individual doesn't automatically translate to the quality of the whole team.  There is a difference between having a team of all-stars and having an all-star team.  There are many success factors for creating an all-star team who can consistently execute.  But I believe the two most important are having team members with diverse perspectives and the ability to ef...

Be judicious when building your board

“Have you asked your board members for help?” I asked.  She sighed, “It’s hard to get a return phone call.”  This occurs all too often.  An entrepreneur excitedly creates a board with high profile people, believing their personal brands will lend their new organization credibility.  While that can happen, I’ve seen too many cases where these influential people are now on your board, but just aren’t helpful.  They are busy and you aren’t their priority.  It can also impact your ability later to g...
