Travel–it’s all about the shopping–18th Century Style (@MFRW_ORG #BDSM)

Those of you who follow my blogs (Mom? bro?) are aware that I’ve written two prior blogs about this subject, one when I lived in southeast Asia (http://tinyurl.com/mjrpexn) and one when I spent a year in China teaching English to toddlers (http://tinyurl.com/nxdk5jz).

Weirdly, I’m not a particularly avid shopper. I don’t go malling and don’t view shopping as a pastime. Sometimes it’s okay when I’m in the mood, but usually…not. But when I find myself in a new, exotic city, I love to wander around the stores and see what’s being sold, compare foods, clothes, trinkets to goods I’d find in my hometown.

And thus it might have been for Isobel Kilburn, the heroine of Bridling His Vampire. At age eighteen, she traveled to Edinburgh to enjoy the 1766 social season before she was slated to enter an arranged marriage to Edgar, laird of the neighboring clan, the MacReivers.

Leaving aside the question of what strong-willed Isobel thought about being denied the choice of a mate, what would she have seen in the Edinburgh shops? How might she react?

Beautiful Edinburgh

Beautiful Edinburgh

Though Isobel was a high-born young lady from a wealthy clan, Kilburn Castle is located in the far northwest of the Highlands, far away from any town or city of substance. So imagine: before she arrived in Edinburgh, Isobel had never seen a shop. She would have seen goods for sale at fairs or other gatherings, but such events would have been few at remote Kilburn.

So the first wonder for Isobel would have been the city itself. And even now, in the 21st

century, Edinburgh is a wonder and a joy. I’ve been there a couple of times, and it’s a lovely city. Then, however, Edinburgh had the undesirable reputation as the dirtiest and most crowded city in Europe.

Let’s get back to the question: what would have been sold in the shops of 1766 Edinburgh?

At the time Edinburgh was the center of the Scottish Enlightenment. From the 1740s onward, the city came to be seen as a center of forward thinking, especially in the areas of economics, history, science, philosophy and medicine—a new medical branch had been formed at the university there in 1726.  So bookstores and coffeehouses flourished. Having been educated by her governess, Alice Derwent Kilburn (the heroine of Desire in Tartan), Isobel would have been capable of participating in the intellectual discussions of the time. But ‘tis unlikely she was interested—her main pursuits at Kilburn were riding unbroken horses and getting into trouble.

And, though the city was unmarred by excessive industrialization, a linen weaving works had been established in Canongate. So drapers—what we’d call fabric stores—abounded.

And what was the nature of the city? Wealthy and cultured. Several major banks wereheadquartered there. Music was popular and the Edinburgh Music Society

 http://www.ellorascave.com/bridling-his-vampire.html

http://www.ellorascave.com/bridling-his-vampire.html

established in 1728. Many improvements were made during the time Isobel visited. And improvements were needed—as I mentioned, Edinburgh was thought to be one of the

most crowded and unsanitary cities in Europe.  However, the overcrowding threw all social classes together—lords might live in the same tall row-house as a chimney sweep.

But the improvements changed that to a certain degree. The newer parts of the town were seen as more desirable than the older quarter, where the poor remained while the wealthier moved on.

I hope I’ve intrigued you enough! If not, here’s what the story is about:

CaseOfYouHere’s a taste–yum!

Just a Spanking– Rated R

“All right, Rebecca,” he says finally. “Kneel on the footstool and stretch your body across my legs.” I look up to find that he has placed one of the throw pillows on his lap. I understand that he wants a barrier between my body and his possible erection. Plus the cushion is too soft to provide much friction. Obviously he has planned this carefully. I would not have expected less from him.

I am awkward as I clamber onto the ottoman and spread my body across his lap. The ottoman is the perfect height. When I bend at the hip, my belly rests on the cushion and my ass is in air, just to the right of his body. I rest my chest on the chair to his left, cradling my head in my crossed arms. I’m not uncomfortable. I feel stable and well-supported.

“Thighs together. That’s right. Bring your knees closer to the chair. Good.” I comply as promptly as I can. The shift raises my butt higher. I’m totally accessible. Completely vulnerable.

It’s delicious.

Usually he warms me up when he’s about to spank me. He will stroke and knead my buttocks, then pinch me hard just as I am starting to relax. More often than not he’ll slip a blunt finger between my cheeks and swirl it around in my pussy. He’ll tell me what a pervert I am, to be so wet at the mere thought of being beaten. I’ll be torn between embarrassment and pride. I know that this is one reason why he wants me.

Tonight, though, the only warm up is more waiting. He doesn’t touch me, though I can feel his eyes like ghostly fingers on my exposed flesh. My cunt feels heavy and swollen, pressed against the cushion. I shift my position the tiniest bit and pleasure sparks from my clit to my nipples and back again in a maddening cycle.

“Be still,” he orders. “No squirming around. No humping the pillow. This is a spanking, pure and simple. You may yell or cry as much as you want. But I don’t want you to move. That will spoil it.”

There’s menace in his voice, and promise. We are about to embark on a new adventure together.

“Do you understand?”

I’m sure he feels me tremble as I nod, but he doesn’t chide me. Instead he brings the flat of his hand down hard on my ass.

“Ow!” I’m startled more than hurt. The sting races like a wildfire from my cheek to my clit. The swollen nub compressed between my thighs is a red hot coal. “Ouch!” Before the echoes die he lands another blow, sharp and precise, on the opposite mound. Brief pain flares before pleasure drowns it.

Smack! Smack! Each slap builds the heat. I barely have time to suck in a breath before he hits me again, his open palm walloping me with all of his considerable strength. He varies his targets, whacking one cheek, then the other, with an occasional fiery blow to the back of my thighs. Otherwise, he gives me no respite, just pummels my ass again and again and again.

Before long I’m yelling each time he connects. My skin feels raw. My whole ass burns. Fire spikes wherever his hand lands, a sudden jump against the background heat. I try my best not to shrink from his slaps, to fulfill my part of the bargain.

Real pain has long since overwhelmed the teasing sting of the first few spanks. Still, I’m turned on by the process, perhaps more by the thought than by the sensations. There’s a buzzing in my pussy, an itch that’s amplified each time he strikes. I arch my back the slightest bit, pressing my pelvis against the disappointingly puffy cushion.

Of course he notices. He reads my body like no one else. “Naughty slut!” he exclaims. Sharp blows rain down on my battered ass. “Be still! Don’t disappoint me.”

Guilt smothers the pain for an instant. I tighten my thighs, struggling to relieve the torment at my center.

“I guess I’ll just have to hit you harder,” he says, and follows through on his promise.

A Sneak Peek and a Cover Reveal! (@MFRW_ORG #SPeekSunday)

Sneak Peek Sunday Banner

This is my first foray into Sneak Peek Sunday, a blog hop created and maintained by Sara Walter Elwood (Thanks, Sara!)

Today I”m revealing a little bit about a short story that will be available on May 30. Here’s the blurb:

Bridling His Vampire (part of the Highland Vampires series from Ellora’s Cave)

Scotland, 1766… Edgar, Laird MacReiver, has never regretted his decision to wed Isobel, daughter of Clan Kilburn’s laird, until she bites his tongue and drinks his blood. Still, he’s determined to bridle the wild child of the infamous vampire clan by any means necessary, including bondage and discipline.

But are some women impossible to tame?

And here are the six paragraphs (no more, no less) I’m allowed to post in this blog hop:

From the Highland Vampires series

From the Highland Vampires series

Edgar’s lips caressed hers and her mind emptied of everything except this new experience. She wanted to remember everything about her first kiss—the strength of his arms, the warmth of his lips followed by the wetness of his tongue as it slid slyly into her mouth.

His flavor was distinctive, a spice like nothing she’d tasted before, a toothsome relish composed of spring water, mint and honey. The scent of the forest mingled with his aroma, a fragrance that melded good male sweat with an underlying freshness that reminded her of the summer sun glittering on the sea.

His hand trailed down her back to curve over her bottom. He squeezed, and the tingling heat of passion spread from his broad, warm palm to encompass all of her. A purr rose in her throat. She slid her arms beneath his and held onto his shoulders from behind.

She pulled him in tight, wanting nothing but for this kiss to go on and on forever. Life had become so simple. Their mouths touching, their hands exploring, their bodies pressed against each other were everything. Nothing else mattered.

She sucked on his tongue but still wanted more. She nipped and then, tasting a new flavor, licked the tip. Was it his blood? She didnae care. He was delicious.

She sucked harder. Yes, that was his blood seeping over her tongue from the tiny bite, and it was intoxicating…he was intoxicating. He groaned and his grip tightened. She became aware that his muscular body had hardened against hers.

Uh-oh…Shift Happens…by J.C. McKenzie

SHE SHOULD BE SOLVING A MYSTERY, BUT SHE’D RATHER PLAY WOLF.

CAN SHE GET BOTH JOBS DONE?

Shift Happens

Shift Happens

Andrea McNeilly’s job as a government agent is not asking questions, but then a routine assignment turns into a botched assassination of a Master Vampire’s human servant. Answers become a priority. Her search to discover the truth is riddled with obstacles, the largest being an oversized Werewolf who resembles a Norse god. Andy can’t afford the distraction he offers, because if she fails, she faces eternal enslavement.

Wick’s job is to monitor Andy, but he prefers more intimate activities, none of them G-Rated. His choices, however, are often not his own. His ability to help Andy is limited by his bond to the Master Vampire.

Facing many trials and challenges along her path to redemption, Andy learns the value of her freedom might be set too high.

Excerpt:

A large black wolf trotted into the clearing to confront me. He had a white-tipped snout, white boots and mitts and would have looked cute had he not been the most intimidating Werewolf I’d ever seen. Standing tall and solid, power rolled off of his body. His eyes bore into mine. I sniffed the air. The strong Werewolf scent of rosemary swirled around me, strong and seductive, laced with sugar. A weird fuzzy sensation spread out from my chest. Whoa.

My other form growled low, demanding release, straining against my skin. The energy

of the wolves built—layers upon layers of excitement and impatience. The air pulsated with anticipation. They could sense the imminent kill.

Let me out! My other form repeated, throwing her power against my built up walls, howling in defiance.

When the energy of the Werewolves surged, I finally released her. My wolf form flowed out fast, wiping out the feline in little more than a heartbeat. Smaller, weaker and the size of a natural wolf, a Shifter in this form was no match for a Werewolf, especially a dominant one. I had time to meet the eyes of the Alpha for only an instant before the pack leapt forward. My limbs shook. It went against every instinct ingrained within me, but I rolled onto my back—submissive.

Saturday Spankings-467x200

Uh-oh. What’s she trying now?

Another blog hop, Saturday Spankings, found at http://saturdayspankings.blogspot.com  Sounds fun, doesn’t it?

This serious spanking is from Rakes in Tartan. It’s clear that Andrew MacReiver means to tame Dagmar, grevinne Draugursdatter by any means necessary…

He thrust his hand into her hair and clenched his fist until tears started in her eyes. She gasped, and he kissed her, being deliberately rough as he thrust in his tongue.

Rakes in Tartan

She bit. He dragged her head back and slapped her arse as hard as he could, then wrapped his arm around her to control her thrashing about.

By Jove, but she was strong! Taller and stronger than any woman he’d ever known. He gloried in her struggle, knowing he was more than equal to her, and spanked her rump again and again, harsh swats that heated her flesh even through her clothing.  Finally she stilled and quieted.

I’m a Dungeon Crawl virgin…be kind, please, Sir. (#dungeoncrawl #MFRW_ORG)

dungeon crawl candles_300px

For my first Dungeon Crawl, I decided to give a very hot and sexy peek into my latest book, Rakes in Tartan.

What’s it about, you ask? Okay–here’s the blurbage:

Setting: London, 1816

The social season promises both sex and danger for Torquil Kilburn and Andrew MacReiver, Highland heirs arrived in London to seek brides. The Scotsmen must negotiate the complicated morés of high society to woo and win an exquisite debutante and her passionate, unconventional mother while keeping their vampire heritage a secret.

But evil stalks the ballroom at Almack’s, the streets of Piccadilly, the drawing rooms of the ton. Headless bodies have been found drained of their blood, for another vampire haunts the streets of London, murdering noblemen. As he draws ever closer, Tor and Andrew must fight not only for love, but for their lives.

Sooo…we’re talking sexy Scottish vampires looking for mates. And one of them has very wicked thoughts and ways…

Excerpt from Rakes in Tartan:

Dagmar stood. Clad all in white, her pale flesh almost indistinguishable from the clothing she wore, she seemed a woman made of ice but for the fiery stone between her breasts. Andrew was determined to melt her, break her, bring her to her knees.

He could be wrong, but he thought he’d understood her at first glance. The next few moments would tell him if he’d found the woman he’d needed all his life, or if he’d meet her son at dawn with pistols or rapiers in hand.

She turned to face him. He went to the door and locked it with a decisive click.

“Well, madame.” He thrust his hand into her hair and clenched his fist until tears started in her eyes. She gasped, and he kissed her, being deliberately rough as he thrust in his tongue.

She bit. He dragged her head back and slapped her arse as hard as he could, then wrapped his arm around her to control her thrashing about.

By Jove, but she was strong! Taller and stronger than any woman he’d ever known. He gloried

Rakes in Tartan by best-selling author Suz deMello

in her struggle, knowing he was more than equal to her, and spanked her rump again and again, harsh swats that heated her flesh even through her clothing.  Finally she stilled and quieted.

He gave her one final smack. Her body jolted but she did not try to break free, instead letting her quivering body sag against his.

“Good girl.” Loosening his hand, he stroked her hair. “We donnae have to fight as long as ye acknowledge who is master.”

She again tried to jerk away. Frustration burned in her dark eyes. “I have no master and do not want one.”

He gathered her skirt, drawing up folds until he could easily reach beneath them. After finding the gap in her pantalettes, he reached inside and fingered her moisture. “Och, I think you do, madame, and I think I am the right mon for ye.”

He stroked her hot, hard bump and sucked in a breath. He’d found her. He’d found her, the woman his soul had craved. Clearly no-one’s fool, she was strong but desirous of submission.

He closed his eyes to savor the moment. When he was ready, he withdrew his hand slowly, caressing slit and clit tenderly. She was wet enough, he reckoned, but not soaking. She would be before he finished, but he didn’t mind a harsh entry. He could deliver both pain and pleasure, and he well knew that the combination was a heady treat for many women. From her reaction to the spanking, he guessed she was one of those for whom pain aroused.

He turned her and said, “Bend over.” He pushed her shoulders down and she grasped her knees for support. He unbuttoned his breeches, lifted her skirts and again searched for her opening with hasty fingers. After finding it, he took her. He meant to ram in, but her slickness prevented that. He slid into a wet channel whose tightness surprised him. She was a widow and he expected her to be more open, but he didnae mind.

He groaned as his staff parted slippery tissues, then rested a moment in her cozy, silken nest. Gripping her hips, he began to saw in and out of her. With each thrust, he grunted and so did she. Her muscles tightened and he sensed she approached her climax. He reached around her to slap her mound. A surprised yelp accompanied a clenching on his rod. He spanked her again, tugged on her clitty and fucked her harder.

He pulled out of her and dragged her over to the bay window, where he forced her down over the cushioned window seat.

She gasped and panted. “We’ll be seen!” Though clothed, they’d be visible to any passer-by who might look up into the first story window.

“Donnae worry. Ye’re close and so am I.” He hauled up her skirt and gave her another few swats, wishing he had a whip. At the thought of marking her lush rump, his cock hardened even more. He grabbed her hair again, wrenched her head back and shoved inside her now-gaping hole. She shrieked, her cunt tightening anew.

He rode her hard and long until she was taking great sobbing breaths and sprawled, limp and compliant, over the cushions.

He bent over her and scattered tiny bites over the flesh left naked by her low-cut dress. “Whose are ye?” he growled into her ear.

“Yours.”

Lightning flashed through his veins and he came, flooding her.

Scare yourself silly at “Linden Manor”

Or just read the marvelously scary book by Catherine Cavendish

The Phantom Bride of 13 Curves

cat pic 1My novella – Linden Manor – features the ghost of Lady Celia Fitzmichael, about whom a scary nursery rhyme was written, which haunted my main character, Lesley Carpenter. In it, Lady Celia is never mentioned by name. Instead, she is referred to as ‘The Scottish bride.’ And woe betide you if you laid eyes on her ‘blackened face’.

Writing this story inspired me to go in search of allegedly true reported sightings and tales of tragic brides who seem unable – or unwilling – to leave the place of their mortal death.

My quest has led me to all sorts of interesting stories. A number occur at the site of fatal road crashes. Here’s one from a very twisty road, aptly named 13 Curves (or Cedarvale Road to give it its proper name) in Marcellus, southwest of Syracuse in New York.pic 2 - 13 Curves, Syracuse

The road certainly twists and turns and sixty years ago, so the story goes, a young ‘just married’ couple, without a care in the world, were driving along there on their wedding night, probably concentrating a little too much on the honeymoon to follow rather than the perils of the dark road ahead.

Rounding one of the bends, the car spun out of control, off the road and plunged into a nearby creek. The couple were killed instantly. What followed has been reported in many ways by many people, most of whom were previously unaware of any such sightings.

Some people report seeing a ghostly bride, covered in blood and carrying a glowing orange lantern. Others say her eyes glow as she wanders along the road, apparently searching for something or someone. Others have reported seeing the apparition standing on one of the hills along the road. At times she is reported as behaving in a reckless fashion, leaping out at unsuspecting cars and causing their drivers to swerve out of control and crash their vehicles.

cat pic 3She has also been reported causing accidents by suddenly manifesting herself in the driver’s rear view mirror, apparently sitting in the back seat of their cars, dressed in white, spattered with blood. When they turn around, she has gone. A variation on the story says that, in fact, she wasn’t killed that day – only her groom was. She died much later and returns to this spot, searching for her long dead husband. A common theory is that she died on Friday 13th and only returns on this date.

Whatever the truth of this story, the road is undeniably spooky at night. Its many curves require due diligence when negotiating them. This is not a road to lose concentration on, so maybe the phantom bride of 13 curves comes back to warn the unwary to take care, orcatpic 4 risk suffering her fate.

Now, here’s a flavour of Linden Manor:

Have you ever been so scared your soul left your body?

All her life, Lesley Carpenter has been haunted by a gruesome nursery rhyme—“The Scottish Bride”—sung to her by her great grandmother. To find out more about its origins, Lesley visits the mysterious Isobel Warrender, the current hereditary owner of Linden Manor, a grand house with centuries of murky history surrounding it.

But her visit transforms into a nightmare when Lesley sees the ghost of the Scottish bride herself, a sight that, according to the rhyme, means certain death. The secrets of the house slowly reveal themselves to Lesley, terrible secrets of murder, evil and a curse that soaks the very earth on which Linden Manor now stands. But Linden Manor has saved its most chilling secret for last.

Catherine Cavendish is joint winner of the Samhain Gothic Horror Anthology competition 2013. Her winning novella – Linden Manor – is now available in all digital formats and the print anthology will be published in October. She is the author of a number of paranormal horror and Gothic horror novellas and short stories. Her full length novel, Saving Grace Devine, will be published by Samhain Publishing in the summer.

She lives with a longsuffering husband and mildly eccentric tortoiseshell cat in North Wales. Her home is in a building dating back to the mid-8th century which is haunted by a friendly ghost, who announces her presence by footsteps, switching lights on and strange phenomena involving the washing machine and the TV.

When not slaving over a hot computer, Cat enjoys wandering around Neolithic stone circles and visiting old haunted houses.

A Hot-as-July Sunday Snog from the Queen’s Quest

*****

*****

http://victoriablisse.co.uk/sunday-snog

The May weather here in NoCal is gorgeous! But I’m aware that in many places, folks are not so lucky. Worse, tornadoes are battering parts of the USA. Actually, here in California we’re in a drought right now, and have gotten only a fraction of an inch of rainfall this winter.

But given that a lot of places still look like this…

Brrrr!!!

Brrrr!!!

I thought I’d give you a snog that would feel like this…

beach cover photo of couple

The snog is from the Queen’s Quest, futuristic erotic romance.

Janus is a planet which lacks both tilt and spin, and its Shadowlands are the pewter band of dusk dividing the

violently hot Lightside of the planet from its Darkside, imprisoned by eternal night. Because of the peculiar conformation of the planet, birthrates are low and indiscriminate mating encouraged.

Audryn, Queen of Shadow has reached that time in her life when she must choose a King to rule with her or fail to bear an heir, casting not only her realm but all of Janus into chaos.

Despite her duty, she is reluctant to share power, even a bit distrustful. Janus’ nobles vie for Audryn’s hand. Although she enjoys trysting with all her suitors, none seize her heart.

Then Storne, the warrior Prince of Darkness, arrives to claim her as his bride.

Will his masterful ways allure or repel the willful Queen?

And here’s the steamy snog:

As the dragon flew, the moons shifted, and the sun again ignited Lightside’s deserts with a brilliant golden glow. For my part I wished never to see this hellhole again, and my heart lifted to see the land quickly shift and darken into the cool greens of the WestMarch.

She landed near a still pond, and after allowing us to dismount, waded into the water up to her sinuous neck, drinking greedily. I stripped and followed her. Though she’d stirred up the muddy bottom, the warm water was cleansing and refreshing.

Storne was not so hasty. He remained on the bank as a lookout, weapons at the ready. When I returned, I reached for my robes, but he stopped me with one sinewy hand on my arm. “Don’t bother,” he said.

I looked into his face. Dust had settled into the creases near his gray eyes, so evident when he smiled. And he was smiling, an intimate smile that promised bliss.

My breath came short. How much time had passed since we’d joined? Since I could not remember, ‘twas too long, I decided.

I found a flat, dry spot near the water and spread out our robes while he bathed. When he returned to me, Maia still was in the middle of the mere, delighting in the water. She flung great  jawfuls of it onto her wide, scaly back and rolled around in the pond, catching the glittering spray she splashed in her talons.

I was sprawled out on the robes, resting, when Storne approached me. His flesh was darker than I remembered, for the Lightside sun had bronzed him while lightening his hair just a bit. I liked the effect, especially with shining water sluicing off the carved planes of his golden body. He was already hard, his erection vertical, the round dark cap of his cock-head shining with viscous liquid.

I wanted him inside me more than I could express. My desire robbed me of words. I lay gaping stupidly at his beauty.

He sat next to me and ran a hand over my belly. “Warm and soft,” he murmured into my ear. He stretched out, lying his long lean body close to mine. His warmth engulfed me, his heat feeding mine. I felt moisture bedewing me, softening my labia, readying for him.

He leaned over and kissed me. He was as sweet and gentle as I remembered, first tenderly caressing my lips with his, then easing in his tongue to pleasure us both. His hand slid down to my delta, his fingers stroking my stubbly muff. He tugged softly as we continued to exchange deep soul kisses. This time, he did not tarry, but rolled on top of me and swung his hips to and fro, encouraging me to open to him.

Heat Wave by Adriana Kraft

Heat Wave by Adriana Kraft

During an oppressive Iowa summer of drought and farm foreclosures, widowed Maggie Anderson makes a bold decision: She’ll merge her love of horses and her family’s three hundred and twenty acres into a horse farm and try her hand at nearby Prairie Meadows Race Track, where racing purses have just been augmented by the recently added casino gambling.

Down on his luck after being falsely accused in a racing scandal and banned from training, former Arlington Race Track trainer Ed Harrington has skulked home to Des Moines to drown his sorrows and wait for the dust to clear. He’s unprepared for the piercing robin’s-egg-blue eyes of pint-sized Maggie Anderson, who finds him at a flophouse and offers him a job. Can he pull himself together and meet the challenge?

As the two forge a tumultuous working partnership, they soon discover someone is out to get Maggie’s farm and will stop at almost nothing to force her off the land. Can they find and stop the culprit before someone is killed? Can they survive the far greater danger unleashed by the raw passion simmering just beneath the surface of their relationship?

EXCERPT

“Mr. Harrington, have you decided to take the job?”

“Well, it’s not like I have a lot of other offers.” He grinned faintly, like a child returning from a runaway attempt.

That smile tore at Maggie’s heart. Had he really said she was pretty?

“You may be getting in way over your head,” he cautioned. “Hell, maybe me, too. But I’m willing to try. Of course, I don’t have much to lose. If you’re going to be in this business, it’s important to know something about all elements of the game. In the long run, you may not want to take on the track responsibilities of a trainer. There are a lot ways to play the game.

“We do need to clear up one matter.” Harrington sighed and dropped his gaze. “You know I can’t take your horses to the track. Can’t help you out there.”

Maggie nodded. “I know about the ban, Ed. That doesn’t have anything to do with me. You’ve been vouched for. That’s enough. There are likely a lot of bridges yet to cross. Let’s take them one at a time.”

“I’m all for that, Maggie.” Harrington lifted his cup in salute.

That was the first time he’d called her Maggie. It sounded too familiar, yet they had to be on a first name basis if they were going to work together as a team. She took a short breath, excited about actually beginning to put in place her plan to save the farm. Her nerves tingled at the prospect.

Or, perhaps they were responding to the man who pronounced Maggie in a gravelly voice that oozed intimacy.

It’s Research, You Know

We’re celebrating the release of Heat Wave, Book Two in our romantic suspense series set in the horseracing industry, Riders Up.

We thought we’d share a little about researching for this series. Naturally, events in authors’ lives often serve as inspiration for the stories they write. With this series, we really can’t tell the difference between “research” and just living our lives.

Both of us have always loved horses and always hoped someday we’d have time, space and resources to own at least one, never dreaming it might actually happen. Some years back, my husband came into a small inheritance, and all the right ingredients coalesced. We lived out west at the time and had a friend who trained and raced horses at nearby Wyoming Downs. It wasn’t long before we’d worked out an arrangement with him, and he and my husband were able to attend the Barretts sale in California, where they came home with two promising thoroughbred fillies.

One of them did quite well for a brief time, even winning an allowance race at Los Alamitos. The other one sustained an early injury, but went on to become an excellent broodmare. We traded our interest in her to our friend for a promising quarter horse, who ran for a while at Wyoming Downs, but never took to racing. We then brought him off the track, stabled him closer to home, and my husband did his transitional ground training. We ultimately sold him to a rancher who trained him as a cutting horse.

So when we write the details of managing race horses, watching pre-dawn workouts, hanging out on shedrow, checking for hot or swollen joints, cooling a horse on a hot-walker, picking hooves, mucking stalls -

all of the above, we’re writing things we know and love. We hope you do, too!

New Release: Rakes in Tartan by Suz deMello (MFRW_ORG #kindle)

I’m Dena Garson’s guest today talking about why we love vamps. Enjoy!

Take it away, Suz!

Why do we love vamps?

In a word, they’re hot.

Like great chocolate, vampires are smooth, seductive and dangerous. They’re invariably wealthy because they prey upon whoever they please and can steal for a living if they choose. Anne Rice’s Lestat is the classic example. And many female fans enjoy the fantasy of losing control to a sexy, dominant male. On top of that, our culture worships the young and the beautiful.

In my writing, I emphasize not only the vampires’ sensuality, but also their unnatural strength and speed. In Rakes in Tartan, my hero, Tor Kilburn, doesn’t box or fence to stay in shape, but he “flies”—or appears to. Here’s his version of taking a relaxing jog at night:
