The Dead Don’t Lie-New Book

THE DEAD DON’T LIE by Camille Taylor

Harbour Bay Series #3
Publisher: Limitless Publishing
– SYNOPSIS
Club X—where fantasy and reality collide…

For notorious sex club owner Aimee Burnes, it’s all about business. That is until her estranged sister, Louisa, is found dead in the small, coastal town of Harbour Bay. Having always been the favourite of their hyper-religious mother, there’s no logical explanation for Louisa’s untimely death—unless she wasn’t the angel she was believed to be.

Aimee will do anything to protect her club, including corrupting a detective with old-fashioned ideals…

James Hawke is Harbour Bay’s newest detective. He’s a country boy through and through, and he’s not prepared for Aimee’s assault on his senses. When he’s sent undercover into Club X to collect intelligence on Aimee and her clients, James wants to believe she’s genuine. The only thing he knows for sure is he wants her in ways he never wanted anyone before. Deep undercover, he must sacrifice his morals to get close.

Aimee is a master of manipulation…

Aimee will do what she must, even if it means taking her seduction of James too far. With both of them craving more than an intense encounter leaving them sweaty and satisfied, outside dangers challenge their newfound bond. But when the medical examiner finds incriminating evidence pointing to Aimee as her sister’s killer, James is forced to choose…

Will he honour the oath of his badge, or believe in Aimee’s innocence, regardless of the evidence stacking against her? With her lies unmasked and her innocence questioned, proof lies in the DNA evidence.

The dead don’t lie…

Writing Magic

Most people consider writing boring and hard work. As somebody who has always loved writing, I have always found this puzzling. For me writing is like breathing, a way to express myself, therapy. So why do others think of it as something they avoid like the plague?

When I became a teacher I quickly found out why—or at least I found a working theory. I was shocked by the way writing was being taught in school. I am an elementary school teacher and back then writing was still considered an important skill. Not that “back then” was that long ago; I’m speaking about a little over ten years ago. With each passing year, writing has regretfully become an area of educational neglect. It has had a slight resurgence in the past three years or so in the area of non-fiction or functional writing.

creative-desk-pens-school-large

For the first few years of my teaching career, writing instruction consisted of learning how to use some kind of organizer and then write the infamous five-paragraph essay that would be required at the end of fifth grade as a standardized test. Children were given “prompts’ and then told to write, share with peers, edit and revise. Needless to say that the writing was not good and the motivation to write was nonexistent. However, students were at least able to write somewhat creatively. This has now vanished from our schools. Nowadays children are being asked to write only functional text as reading responses or short answers to questions. Creativity is not a factor.

Don’t get me wrong. Functional writing is very important and should definitely be taught and cultivated. However it is the very rare person that is going to be excited about it. Sitting in a full classroom being told to fill in a graphic organizer about why your bedroom is your favorite place to relax in is NOT fun, not even to a die-hard writer like me.

IMAGINATION_by_archanN

After a few years of this mind-numbing writing instruction and a constant wave of teachers’ complaints about how the students hated writing and how impossible it was to teach something everybody hated (including the teachers in many cases), I decided I was going to try something new; use the kids’ own imagination to build a fictional story.

We worked on a group writing first. I started the story with just a few sentences and then asked the children to help me add details. After we did the writing, the editing and revising, the students got to illustrate their group story. Now that they had a “model”, it was time for them to get excited about their own characters. They got to draw them and answer a short “character interview”. Then, they were able to get into their characters’ skins and tell others about them. They “designed” the setting and shared it with the other kids. Finally they started writing their story while I hounded them with questions that produced more content, more interesting details. Were these stories amazing? Maybe not. But the kids loved the process and were extremely proud of what they had achieved in the end. So much so, they begged to come with me and write more. If nothing else I succeeded in fostering a love for writing in those few students.

Since then I have found other ways to get the most reluctant of writers excited about writing (I may even share them here another time) including using art to tickle their imagination, but that year will always be one of revelation to me. What an amazing and rewarding thing to see bored children become excited about their own work. How amazing to see the power of writing magic at work!

The fateful day Mimi Marcus has dreaded begins with a phone call…

The wife of a U.S. Marine, Mimi spent countless nights worried that her husband Joel would fall in the line of duty. He had fought valiantly and served his country with honor. That’s exactly what they tell her when they deliver the news—Joel was taken by the enemy in Afghanistan. Her husband is dead.

In desperate need of closure, Mimi travels to the one place Joel still has ties—The Marcus Ranch in Texas, inherited by his handsome younger brother Austin.

New beginnings are only an illusion…

The closer Mimi grows to the Marcus family, the more she considers it home. But when suspicions of Joel’s past surface, Austin refuses to disclose family secrets—even to his brother’s widow. It’s only by accident she uncovers evidence of Joel’s tainted past. Devastated by his lies and betrayal, she slowly opens up to Austin, and together they unfold layers of pain and grief.

Mimi is sure she’ll never love again, but is Austin the man to prove her wrong? Then the unthinkable happens…

Just as Mimi finds new hope in a future with Austin, Joel returns home from war. Enraged, traumatized, and teetering on the edge of insanity, Joel confesses to a history of deception, revealing yet another secret—this one too terrible to forgive.

In an awful twist of fate, Joel proves marriage vows are made to be honored.

No matter what.

Q&A with Cristina Slough

Getting to Know Cristina

Five Fun Facts

I love writing to music, it sets by mood and puts me in the zone.
When I was little, I believed one day I would really fly just like Supergirl!
I have jumped out of a plane, by choice!
I know the words off by heart to over 20 movies, but I can never remember song lyrics!
I love the water but I can’t swim.

Top Three Writing Essentials

Google is essential, so I must have internet (I’m a writer not a serial killer!)
Music (I cannot write without it.)
A notebook and pen (I have to write down ideas immediately.)

Best Piece of Advice for Aspiring Writers

If you are going to invest hours, weeks and months writing a book, make sure that you are deeply connected to it. Don’t write about zombies and vampires just because that is where the market is right now, if you really want to write a World War love story. Writing is a very personal art. If you don’t believe in your own story, how can you expect others to?

If your aim is to be a published author, don’t expect an easy ride. Even famous authors have had rejections, just remember that failure only exists if you quit!

interview

About TILL DEATH US DO PART

Q: That ending….Many Readers didn’t see it ending as it did. How much of that ending was you and how much was you letting the characters take the wheel?

A: That ending was all them. I didn’t even know what was going to happen until my fingers typed the final words. Suddenly, my mind raced right back to the opening chapter of the book where Mimi was dreaming about Joel; his body, bloody and wet. All of the feelings and emotions I had throughout the story came together in the final scene. The best way to describe it would be—putting a needle and thread throughout the book and stitching it all together. Truly, it felt like I was right there with them. The ending resulted in showing readers what I saw…even I was shocked!

Q: Favorite Scene of TILL DEATH US DO PART?

There were quite a few scenes that I loved writing. If I had to make a firm choice then it would have to be Chapter 30 titled: Joel. This is where my emotional investment to the story hit its highest level. It is the moment that my voice was no longer my own. It was all theirs.

Q: Team Joel or Team Austin?

Ultimately, Team Austin. But I loved writing about Joel, he was very complex, there was far more about him than meets the eye.

Q: Who is your celebrity dream cast for TILL DEATH?

Scott Eastwood would make the perfect Austin. I’d love to see Zac Efron play Joel, although he would have to be more rough around the edges.

Looks wise, Shay Mitchell would fit Mimi perfectly but I have no idea if she could pull off a British accent!

I think that Julianne Hough would also fit the physical profile of Meg, but again, she’d have to be able to pull off being a Brit.

Q: If you can pick one song that encompasses the whole story, what would that song be?

I won’t give up by Jason Mraz. I wrote the end scene to this song. It could have been from either Joel or Austin’s POV.

Q: Do you have plans to write more with the characters from TILL DEATH?

No. I truly feel like my journey with the characters has ended. That being said, they will forever be a part of me.

Q: What is in the works now?

I am working on a new standalone novel about a woman that fakes her own death to escape from her abusive husband. Some of my research is being carried out by working with a lady who has been a victim of domestic violence. She has offered to share her experiences with me. It is not based on her life, however she is helping me to understand what some women may be feeling that are or have been in an abusive relationship. This one is going to be emotional for sure.

Teaser 3 Till Death Us Do Part

meet the author

Novelist, movie addict, and animal lover, Cristina Slough is the author of:

Till Death Us Do Part, her debut novel.

Cristina has always been a bookworm, rarely seen without a pen and paper in her hand, she loves delving into a literacy fictional world of her own.

At the age of 11, her junior school teacher told her mother that she would be wasting her life if she didn’t become an author. Throughout her teenage years and beyond, her parents spurred her on to keep writing. She later began a career in commercial real estate, working in London’s West End, a corporate bubble where she was unable to fuel her passion to write.

It was on her Californian honeymoon in 2012 that the bug to write was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. After visiting Yosemite National Park she was inspired by the natural beauty of the land that surrounded her. Holding a special place in her heart, Yosemite would later be written into her debut novel.

She finally gave up the ‘big smoke’ when her son, Lucas, was born in October 2013.

When Lucas was a newborn, Cristina was told to sleep when the baby sleeps. She never could. There was a calling inside her to write. After getting to grips with her new role as a mother, she began working a psychological thriller, but she couldn’t fully connect to the characters she created. She ditched the manuscript and started Till Death Us Do Part(Limitless Publishing, 2015).

Cristina is married to Adam, who runs a successful business; together they share their Bedfordshire home with their son, crazy white German Shepherd and three spoiled cats. They can be found trekking through woodlands, or around the many shops Cristina loves to explore. As a family, they love to travel frequently, the United States being a firm favourite.

★★★ ALISON MELLO ★★★

Thank you for choosing to read my book. I am a wife and stay at home mom to two wonderful children. My family is my world and one of the reasons I started writing was so I could be home for them. I was born in raised in Massachusetts where I still live today with my amazing family.

As a child and young adult I was never a big reader and I think it was because I never found a genre or a series I really enjoyed. After having my son fell in love with Contemporary Romance and I have built up quite the collection since then. As I started to read more, I started to notice things I really enjoyed in a book and things I didn’t and realizing what I didn’t enjoy really made me want to write more.

I literally woke up one morning and started writing. I was bored and unhappy with what I was doing in life and since I had an idea in mind for the start of a book, I sat down and went for it. I realized that if there was ever a time for me to do it, it was now, because my hours at work were slow and the kids were off enjoying their friends for summer vacation.

I finished the first book in two weeks and decided that I really enjoyed writing, so I kept going. I already had an idea in mind for a book two and three, so I kept writing and that is how the Learning to Love Series was born. Somewhere along the lines one of my Beta readers convinced me that Michael needed a story to so I added the fourth and final book. I hope you enjoy my books as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

I am so glad I started this writing journey and I hope you will stay with me for the ride. I will definitely be writing more in the future. Chasing Dreams is one of my favorites and is my first stand alone, but stay tuned for the next book to come!

A Little Girl Called Mafalda

I’m writing this blog while I’m trying (in vain I should add) to drink a cup of coffee with a totally numbed mouth. I just came from the dentist where I endured a deep cleaning. As I sat on the dentist chair, mouth wide open with an ultrasonic drill scratching away all the plaque I have managed to collect in the last six months, I am reminded of one of my favorite cartoonist’s famous strips. Growing up I was a serious groupie (who am I kidding? Still am) of Argentinian cartoonist Quino and his most famous creation, Mafalda. I have every strip he ever drew and to this day I delight in reading them. He had that uncommon ability to appeal to children as much as adults and be able to tell some very serious truths about the political and social situation in his country at the time and also the world in general. He was drawing these comic strips at a time when the war in Vietnam was still going on. I read them quite a bit later, but his truths were and still are true today.

quino

Just as he was free with the sharp and biting political and social commentary, he was also amazing at articulating common truths, episodes or feelings that came straight from everybody’s life, no matter where you came from or how old you were. One of the funniest sayings of his (or hers, since most of these messages were being delivered by an elementary school girl, Mafalda and her friends) was that the dentist was yet another place where you go, you sit down, open your mouth to say nothing. I can concur :)

mafalda-y-su-tortuga-burocracia

Mafalda, a precocious little girl who wants peace and justice for the world more than anything else, named her pet turtle “Bureaucracy” (Burocracia). In one strip she reads the definition of democracy in the dictionary and bursts out laughing when it says the government of the people by the people (see below).

Democracia

I’m always amazed at how relevant she still is today. Mafalda is just a little younger than me (yes, I’m ancient) but while I age, she will always remain the six year old she was when Quino created her. Gotta love her!

✦✧✦ SYNOPSIS ✦✧✦
Purple wig, red lips, and a flirty smile—those are the only things Austin Blakely remembers when he wakes up tied to his bed…

It’s Austin’s job as the enforcer for the New York Rangers hockey team to strike fear in the hearts of grown men. But if Manhattan’s notorious gossip magazine, The Whisperer, catches wind of his dating fail—or worse, took a picture of him in his compromised state—his reputation and career could be ruined.

Magnolia Cross is still running from rumors that robbed her of the interview of a lifetime…

Intern reporter for the Madison Square Garden news affiliate isn’t Magnolia’s idea of a dream job. She doesn’t even like hockey. But it’s experience on-air, and that’s what counts. After a prank-gone-wrong leaves her stripped of her Valedictorian title, she loses her initial chance at making it big. But now she’s stronger and smarter, and won’t let trust issues screw her out of her chance for success—again.

One bad interview and two million YouTube hits later, Magnolia is a media sensation—for all the wrong reasons…

Stupid Austin Blakely with his cocky smile and hockey lingo gibberish. After he embarrasses her on national television in the name of harmless flirting, Magnolia vows never to interview him again. Except avoiding Austin is easier said than done.

It isn’t long before Magnolia discovers the real source of Austin’s fears. It’s all about the seductress in the purple wig—unless it’s about the pictures she stole that could change all their lives forever…

❤❤❤ SAVANNAH BLEVINS ❤❤❤

Savannah was born in Hyden, Kentucky. She received her M.S in Speech Language Pathology from The University of Mississippi in 2009. She’s been writing since the early age of nine when she begged her parents for a type writer for Christmas.

She now lives in Corbin, Ky with her husband of eight years, John, and their two wonderful daughters, Delilah and Gracie.

When she isn’t working, or running after her kids, she spends her free time traveling the country with her husband. There is nothing better than a day of football in the grove, a late night of basketball at Rupp Arena or slapping the glass to celebrate another Washington Capitals goal.

She is a strong believer that with enough hard work and determination you can accomplish anything.
