Sophia Valentine-Author’s Interview
I’m here today with Sophia Valentine. Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions. You are the author of the erotic romance titled “His Confession” . When I write, I am afraid I’m not much of a planner. I normally start with an idea and a couple characters and I just let it develop as I write. What about you? Are you a plotter or a pantster?
S – I’m definitely a pantster. I usually write the blurb first, character bio’s, and then just go with it. I don’t like to plan as the story usually takes a different course anyway, for me.
I know you write erotic romance, but do you write in any other genre?
S – I write several genre’s, for a mature audience – erotic romance, contemporary, thriller / suspense.
When did you decide you would like to be a writer? Have you always liked to write?
S – I loved writing from a very young age. I was always winning awards for my creative writing in primary school. I have manuscripts I wrote when I was 18. I started writing again a few years ago.
We all lust over other author’s books–I know I do, lol. What book do you wish you would have written?
S – Savages, by Don Winslow, or Gossip Girl or Sex And The City. I loved the movie, and the shows also.
Are you planning to write in other genres?
S – Yes. I have a contemporary and thriller novel I hope to release at some point.
There are certain scenes I agonize over. Is there a certain type of scene that’s harder for you to write than others? Love? Action?
S – Love scenes can take much longer than ordinary scenes, as you want to ensure that it’s written perfectly. If the chemistry isn’t right, it can deter people from feeling for the characters, and caring about the romance aspect and whether they end up together.
Right now I’m reading–among others–Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare. What’s in your reading list right now?
S – Way too many books! My to-be-read list is huge, and that includes eBooks and paperbacks. Jackie Collins is always on my reading list, and so is Danielle Steele. I want to get through all of their books.
I know just what you mean. I don’t think I will ever be able to go through my TBR list. Now, I know your books are going to be extremely successful and one of these days a big Hollywood producer is going to want to make a movie out of it. Who will play your main characters?
S – I would love Blake Lively to play Gabriella Woods, Charlie Hunnam to play Darion Milano, and Angelina Jolie for Eva.
Do you write full time? How do you find time to write and do you have a special place where you write?
S – I write full time at the moment. No particular special place, although nothing beats taking a notepad to the pool / beach in the summer.
The beach sound awesome right now. Do you ever feel attached to your characters as if they were real? How do you come up with them? Do you base them off people you know or something else?
S – For sure. I need to care for my characters, and feel connected to them, else the story won’t flow. I use some traits from people I know, or celebrities, especially appearance-wise.
Before we go, do you have any advice to give new writers?
S – I would advise anyone that wants to write to research a lot to perfect their craft, read a lot, talk to other writers, and begin building an author platform straight away. Also, never give up, even if it takes years. Believe in yourself.
Thank you. It was a pleasure talking to you. Make sure you check out her book here. Best of luck Sophia

Travelling in Time
I just came back from the past. Okay. Not really, but as close as anyone ever could. I spent a few days in Colonial Williamsburg. I go there quite often and I am always wondering when will the magic fade. It hasn’t yet. As soon as I set foot in the cobbled sidewalks of that reconstructed historical town, I am immediately transported to another time. A simpler, yet complex time in history when America was still a baby country, trying out its legs and learning to walk on its own.
This is a place where the past mingles with the present and where it is clear to anyone paying attention how things change and yet stay the same throughout time. Sitting on a bench a colonial couple–obviously gentry by the clothes and the richly decorated parasol the lady is carrying–converses with a modern couple in jeans. A colonial woman walks down the street with a twenty-first century mug of coffee in her hand. A couple of tourists cross paths with a group of militia men heading to a drill.
I have a dream of one day sitting under my favorite tree in Williamsburg, a giant with branches that reach into the ground as if trying to hold on to reality, and write.Hard to explain that yearning to my husband, who is not a writer and does not feel the magic of that place like I do. So I don’t explain and I don’t ask. But one day I will sit under those old branches and write while shadows of the past come into focus only to fade away around me.
As I walked down King St, for the last time this visit, I snap a shot of the young man scribbling away by the Post Office and the soldier playing the penny whistle. I stare with wanderlust at one of the many taverns in town and the little shops peppering the street.
My time in this time capsule is over this time, but I will be back. I wonder if they would hire me as a cast member and allow me to live onsite… Until next time, Williamsburg, I bid you farewell.

by C.K. Brooke
American Pirate Romances, Book #1
Coming April 26 from Limitless Publishing!
Cover Designer: Deranged Doctor Designs
« SYNOPSIS »
In 1720, it’s a pirate’s life for Abigail Clear, daughter of a notorious colonial pirate captain…
But when a rival crew invades Abigail’s ship, she is taken prisoner. Now aboard the enemy vessel, she must contend with its formidable captain. But who is the real captive?
Locked away in the belly of The Indomitable is no place for a woman…
Captain James Morrow is more than displeased to discover his sole captive to be none other than an untamable young lass who will earn him no bounty. Yet if he can soften the little rogue, she just might switch her loyalties to him, and reveal the whereabouts of the infamous thief who sired her—and his stolen treasure. But two can play that game, as Abi is equally inclined to charm the dogged sailor off her father’s tail.
Might she and Captain Morrow run the risk of falling for their own charades?
They dance about their disguises as genuine developing emotions clash against deeper motives, and suspicion runs high. When the captain finally steals a first kiss, Abi decides it’s high time to make her escape—fleeing not only his vessel, but her fondness for the man who intends to see her father hang.
The high seas heat up as Captain Morrow’s quest to recapture Abi is halted by her pirate father, Captain Clear. Will James succeed in pursuit of his captive love, or will his desires conspire to make him a captive himself?

A Labor of Love
My book is not doing too well in terms of sales (add sad face here). Even though the sales rank graph on Amazon looks more like a representation of one of those crazy cliff dives in Acapulco, I feel a compulsion to check it several times of day. It’s like a car crash; you really don’t want to look, you know it’s going to bother you, but you can’t help it. You take a good look anyway!
It’s my first published book, I tell myself all the time. You didn’t really expect it to soar like Harry Potter or even (God forbid, cross my fingers, bring out the garlic) Fifty Shades of Grey, did you? No, but I was really hoping for a constant flow of modest sales. Just enough not to bury me in total obscurity, just enough to keep my ego bruise-free.
I didn’t expect this publishing thing to be easy either, but I am still shocked at how time-consuming it is. I’m not even talking about the actual writing (which consumes all my free time). I am talking about the marketing part of it. In itself it is a full-time job. One I have unfortunately very little time for. Unless, of course, someone can hook me up with a Time-Turner necklace—you know, the kind Hermione Granger had to be able to attend more than one class at the same time. Now that I think about it, that would be really cool.
My day as a writer is nuttier than…a nut (sorry I couldn’t come up with a wittier simile). I wake up at six in the morning, read my messages while I eat breakfast, go to work for the next eight to nine hours (sometimes trying to catch up on a little writing during my half-hour lunch break if I don’t have any lesson planning to do) and then I go sit at Panera for an hour or so (on my non-yoga days) with my Kindle and my Bluetooth keyboard and write. Then, I go home, catch up on a little marketing, a little more writing, dinner, more writing/marketing until I have to drag my sorry behind to bed (and I do mean “drag” literally) where I unwisely still try to read that book I, even less wisely, promised to review or the one I’ve been dying to read for months (I normally don’t make it very far). Sleep for six hours if I’m lucky and do it all over again.
So, I think you will understand that when someone has the nerve to request a free book from me (not in exchange for a review, but just because we know each other), I get very testy (trying not to be too crass and use the word bitchy here). This book is the result of hard work, lack of sleep, and missing quite a few movies I wanted to watch really badly. In order to be able to see (and cry over) the arrow representing the lack of book sales every day, I have collected a gargantuan pile of books I want to read, but have no time for. While others were having drinks with friends at the local sports bar every Friday night, I was on my couch, a laptop on, you guessed it, my lap. This book (and the others I have yet to publish) was written with sweat and tears and I expect people—that they liked the book or not—to respect it for what it is; a labor of love. Is that asking too much?

Angola
When I was in my late teens my family had a friend who claimed he had done so many things in so many different places that we all thought he was just making things up. However when I was talking to a friend recently and telling her some of the things I had done, I realized that he may very well been telling the truth. Sometimes we are just too close to our own truths to realize how rich our lives really are. We always seem to think the grass is greener on the other side and that our lives, despite of whatever you may have witnessed, done, or learned, are just plain boring.
A good friend told me I should write down some of my life experiences. “My life? Who would be interested in that story?” Well, if I bore you to tears with tales of an ordinary life I apologize ahead of time. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to tell my stories. So, for what it’s worth, here it goes.
Captain log 001. Just kidding…
Even though I had lived for a short while in the islands of Cape Verde, my first memories of the many times we lived outside my familiar cocoon of continental Portugal, have to be of Angola. At the time, Angola was a Portuguese colony. My father was an airline mechanic and my childhood was similar to that of military families; always moving from one place to another. We lived in an apartment building (4th floor I want to say, but I could be totally wrong) that operated like a big family. Everybody seemed to be friends with each other and there were many parties to be had in the rooftop terrace.
In my school in Angola I learned that some grownups are just bad and seem to get their kicks by humiliating little ones. I also learned that I couldn’t care less if my best friend was black and her parents weren’t married. I learned that Christmas came even when we were wearing short sleeves and shorts instead of sweaters and coats. In Angola I fell in love for the first time. I was only eight and he was an “older man”, at least nine. His name was Henrique (I hope he is not reading this right now) and he had reddish hair and freckles. We used to write love notes to each other while hiding behind the couches. (I carried that torch for many years :)
In Angola I had my first communion and I remember feeling so grownup in my frilly white dress waiting in line to accept the Host for the first time. My dad bought his first car ever; a giant, ugly American Dodge that died on us shortly after we got it. Then he bought a Renault 4 which had seats that were basically beach chairs and that rolled like a ball if you went around the curve a tad too fast.
We travelled across the country in an old jeep and used a giant block of ice as air conditioning. I got to visit cotton and coffee fields, watched monkeys and other wild creatures cross the road in front of us, met many local kids and had something resembling a tan for the first time in my life.
The whole family loved Angola with its hot weather, the beautiful avenues and parks, the awesome music and the amazing moamba (chicken stew cooked in red palm oil). A chunk of our hearts was left behind when we left.
There is a saying in Africa. It goes something like this; once you drink the water in Africa, you are hooked for life. I am not one to believe in superstition, but I think there is some truth to it. Africa is still in my blood even after all this time.

——— EXCERPT ———
I leaned in, desperate to feel him.
Finally, his lips grazed mine in barely a whisper of a touch.
A moan of protest slipped from my lips when he parted and the musical sound of Dustin’s husky laugh caused me to shiver.
“We shouldn’t be doing this,” he murmured, shocking me when his lips scraped my ear.
“I really don’t care.”
Dustin cupped my jaw, his thumb swiping over my cheekbone. The touch drew my eyes to his.
“I should though.”
I rested my head further into his palm and covered the back of his hand with my own to keep him there. Turning, I pressed my lips to his palm. “What’s the worst that could happen?”
“You could break me.”
I nipped at the tip of his finger when he trailed it over my bottom lip. “Aren’t we both already broken?”
“You could shatter me like no one else, Taz.” Rather than meet my eyes he stared off into the distance over my shoulder. “You could destroy me.”
I reached up, taking his jaw between my fingers and forcing his attention back to me. “I don’t want to.”
“That doesn’t mean you won’t.”
“No, but it means I’ll do everything in my power to try not to.”
The resolve in his eyes wavered. He couldn’t meet my gaze for long. He exhaled heavily, and his jaw kept tensing beneath my palm.
“Dustin,” I said, drawing his focus back to me. “It’s only a kiss.”
It wasn’t. We both knew I was lying and if we started down this road it would lead to more.
Regardless, Dustin pulled me into him. Pressing on the small of my back, he didn’t stop until I was flush against his chest. With his other hand he swiped back a lock of hair to slide it behind my ear.
He lowered his head, dipping until his forehead rested against mine. “I’m trusting you, Taz.”
I responded in a whisper, “Me too. You’re not the only one who stands to lose, Dust.”
Finally, he closed the gap between us and his lips met mine slowly, but forcefully. He claimed and possessed me, marking me as his with his mouth.
Every ounce of pain and fear was shared through our kiss.
When I parted my lips Dustin’s tongue immediately swept into me. I moaned, raising my arms to encircle him. I ran my fingers through the shaggy locks of hair at the back of his neck, pulling on them until he grunted against me.
Even though no space remained between us, Dustin forced me against him harder then dropped his head to my shoulder. He placed a tender kiss directly over the pulse point in my neck and mumbled against my skin, “Please don’t break me, Taz.”

She enjoys writing and bringing to life realistic and relatable characters, especially strong, sharp and savvy females who aren’t afraid to speak their mind.
Music has always played a big part in her life – from noisy rock to reggae, folk to pop punk and everything else in between.
