What’s the best Content Length for SEO & Conversion?

When you’re a blogger, you spend almost as much time worrying about content length as you do the content itself. What makes things even more complicated is that reader preferences and SEO standards change constantly. Are we still in the renaissance of the long read or are we supposed to be getting right down to it for the short attention spans of the Twitter generation? Should we be aiming for a specific word count, like a tight and tidy 500-word post or just going all out on a 2,000-word...

Non-Fiction Book Reviews on The Whine Seller

I read pretty much constantly but I’ve never really done book reviews on this site.

That was partially because there’s no consistency in my reading habits. I may blow through ten books I know you’d like in a month and then not ready anything else relevant to this blog for the rest of the year. Do people want book reviews if they only come out on a regular schedule or are you happy to just hear about a cool book whenever I randomly happen upon one?

It’s also partially because I didn’t want...

Decade in Review or why lists are your best friend

In a few days, we’ll be celebrating New Year’s Eve 2019 which marks not just the end of the year but also the decade. Social media has been abuzz for weeks with the twin takes of “Make a list of what you accomplished in the last 10 years!” and “Listing your accomplishments is Bad, Actually, and will make you feel terrible so just be happy you’re alive.” And, on one hand, I can see how looking at a list of what someone else accomplished in the last ten years can make you feel terrible which is...

My Year in Writing 2019: a rebuilding year

My understanding of sports can be best summarized by the time I looked up at the TV and asked my husband if he was watching “Monday Monday Football Monday” and he just looked at me, looked at the TV, looked back at me and said… “It’s Tuesday? And this is hockey?” But despite my inability to tell a quarterback from a Zamboni, I am going to use a sports cliche because 2019? 2019 was a rebuilding year.… Read more

Write for the job you want

Write for the job you want, not the one you have There’s an expression that says, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have,” and it applies well to your writing life. Even though you’re just starting out, you likely know where you ultimately want to be. You know the writing life you want to have, even though you’re not there yet. The key to getting there is to write for that life now. What is the writing life you want?… Read more

Writers: Finish what you start

Consider yourself warned: There’s a point, usually around the halfway point of your story but not always, when you will hit a moment of crisis. This story is a mess, my writing is awful, the characters are flat and dull, and the whole thing is falling apart. Why am I even bothering to write this? This feeling will often coincide with the siren call of a shiny new idea that would be sooo much easier to write, and it’ll try to convince you that maybe you should just go write that and stop wasti...
