Introducing Masks, a short drama about the heroes and villains in all of us

A few weeks ago, I was asked if I would consider writing a short play about bullying. Parents today knows that bullying is on a whole different level now than what we experienced as kids because of the internet and cell phones. It’s a really important thing to address and something close to my heart as a mom. But I was already completely buried under deadlines and other things and didn’t see how I would possibly have time to write another play.

In fact, my thought process about itwent pretty...

Camp NaNoWriMo July 2016 update: deadlines, politics and the bog of eternal writing blah

At the moment I’m writing this, I’m sitting just a few words over 40,000 for the month. This was a month of slow, painful editing so the fact that I’m track whenall I’ve felt like I’m doing is spinning my wheels is nice. The serial Wrimo in me hates to see the words rack up so slowly but there are things I needed to accomplish this month and I’m accomplishing them so that’s all that matters. Editing is useful but slow on the word count.

But here’s what’s bogging me down in a swamp of writing...

I find your sloth very motivating

I’m having one of those days when the writing is just not happening. I can’t make myself open my work in progress, the words are coming like molasses, andI’m just boppingaround the internet doing absolutely anything to avoid doing some actual writing. And it’s in this state of advanced procrastination that I see you post something like this:

“Was going to work on my novel tonight but Toddlers and Tiara’s marathon wooo!”

“Managed only 100 words before I got distracted by tumblr lol”

“Haven’t wr...

June 2016: Words are busting out all over!

Turns out, it’s waaaay easier to be transparent when things are going well…

I usually write this monthly recap a few days before the month ends, whenever I have some spare time, and update the numbers later. That’s because I’m usually eager to get to it andgeta feeling of accomplishment to see everything I got done in the last month. This time I’m writing this on July 1st, forcing myself to do it just to get some words down because I’m having one of those days when I’m pretty sure I should qu...

The Love of Three Oranges 2 aka The Green Bird: Carlo Gozzi’s sequel

“I see your adaptation of The Green Bird and that’s all well and good but I thought you were going to write a sequel to The Love of Three Oranges?” -People keep asking me, to my great confusion as The Green Bird IS a sequel to The Love of Three Oranges.I feel like we’ve covered this. But I’m still getting confused emails so I figure I’d lay it all out in one neat little blog post for handy Googling.

Carlo Gozzi wrote The Green Bird as a sequel to The Love of Three Oranges. It contains the sam...

Three Padded Walls, production photos and videos of past performances

Looking for ideas for staging Three Padded Walls? I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have some great productions of my play, Three Padded Walls, and I wanted to share some of these great productions with you. Rather than bombard you with a dozen posts on this, I thought I’d do a single post with all the production photos I have so far.

Firstly, the show was first performed at EF International Academy in NY and, while I don’t have any stills from that production, there’s a video of that perform...

The Fourth Orange status report

I feel like I’m writing way too many blog posts lately the gist of which is, “I’m an idiot and totally screwed up.”

We need to talk about the Tale of Tales project nicknamed 4th Orange. I’ve talkedabout it in very general terms but I haven’t really come out and explain exactly what it is and I think it’s time to do that so I can properly explain the mess I’ve gotten myself into. Before we get into this: yes, the project is still happening and, yes, it should still be done soon. But, as you’ll...

As soon as I give up on a project, it comes back from the grave…

I’ve discovered something super annoying about my writing process that I wish I could tap into on purpose but it doesn’t seem to work that way. Namely, that when I get completely frustrated with a work in progress and decide that I’m completely stuck and that it’s time to work on another project for a bit, THAT’s the moment when I finally get unstuck in the first project. Unfortunately, this is not one of those things where, oh, if you had only waited a few more days you would have gotten uns...

May 2016: Regrouping & teaching myself how to write

May flew by. Flew! And yet my concept of time is so tenuous that yesterday I asked my husband if the Fourth of July fireworks were this weekend so somehow I forgot June was a thing? My brain is a mystery.

I have no idea if any of you find these little monthly recaps helpful or interesting at all but I find them tremendously useful so let’s just dive in, shall we?

May 2016

Here’s what May2016looked like in writing…

YearlyGoal
385,040/600,000 words (64%)

Monthly Goal
I didn’t set a goal this month. Last...
