Lana Kortchik grew up in two opposite corners of the Soviet Union – the snow-white Siberian town of Tomsk and the golden-domed Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. At the age of sixteen, she moved to Australia with her mother. Lana and her family live on the Central Coast of NSW, where it never snows and is always summer-warm.

Lana studied IT at university and, as a student, wrote poetry in Russian that she hid from everyone. For over a decade after graduating, she worked as a computer programmer. When she returned to university to complete her history degree, her favourite lecturer encouraged her to write fiction. She hasn’t looked back, and never goes anywhere without her favourite pen because you never know when the inspiration might strike.

Hi D.P.,

Thank you for your question. I queried a few agents and publishers but I think I submitted my manuscript too early and it wasn't ready. I received constructive feedback from some of the agents and a couple of them mentioned that my manuscript was a little too long for a debut novel.

So I took a step back, did another round of editing and asked a few friends to give me their feedback. I reduced the novel from 120,000 words to 95,000 and queried again. Endeavour Press were the first to reply and after some research I signed a contract with them.

Thanks,

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your question. I am not working on a sequel yet but I am planning one. I want to write another book from the point of view of a different character. Many people who read my novel commented that they would like to find out what happens to her. And I realised there was an interesting story there, I just don't know what it is yet. Can't wait to start researching the sequel, just as soon as my two works in progress are finished.

At the moment I am working on a middle grade novel set in London during the Blitz and a suspense novel about a woman who loses her memory due to an accident. She returns home to find dark secrets about her life and loved ones.

Thanks,

Publication Day for Her Perfect Lies

Today is publication day for my psychological thriller, Her Perfect Lies! Because it's a new genre for me, it's published under a different pen name - Lana Newton. I’ve been working on this book on and off for years, writing, re-writing, deleting everything and starting from scratch. Over the years it’s changed titles, main characters and even genres. It started as a short story, hurriedly scribbl Read more of this blog post »

“The trick is to always follow your heart, even if it’s the hardest choice you could possibly make. Only then will you have no regrets in life.”
Lana Kortchik, The Story of Us

“coming in for a glass of milk. For as long as she’d known her, her mother-in-law had been a troubled sleeper. If someone breathed loudly on the other side of the house, she would wake up. A fake smile plastered on her face, Irina turned to the door, praying whoever it was would soon go away, leaving her alone with her tea and her bitter thoughts. When the door opened, it wasn’t Zina or Kirill she saw in the light of the kerosene lamp. Instead, a tall man stood in the doorway, shaking snow off his coat. Irina squealed in excitement, leapt off her chair, knocking it to the ground, and ran into his arms. Laughing, he caught her and lifted her up in the air, showering her face with kisses. ‘Maxim! What are you doing here? We didn’t expect you till tomorrow.’ She felt giddy and excited. The skin of her cheeks felt raw from his stubble but she didn’t care. Here he was, alive and well and looking at her with such love, it made her heart ache. Thank God! Carefully he placed her on the ground. He looked thinner than”

“Until the day when God shall design to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is summed up in these two words – wait and hope.”
