Stations of the Wave I-V
A Narrative Expressionist Experiment
I grew up Catholic. And in Catholicism they have something called “Stations Of The Cross,” which is a series of sequential, devotional images that depict the crucifixion of Christ. There are usually 12-14 images, depending on the brand of Catholicism — in the Phillipines, for instance, Catholics use a 12 image series, but the traditional Western version is usually 14.
I don’t consider myself Christian, but I appreciate Christian art.
As I’ve painted more and more, I’ve been thinking about telling stories with paintings, expressing narrative with color and line and shape, but without words.
So I decided to do my own adaptation of the 90s hit movie “Point Break,” starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. I decided to tell the story of the movie in a series of images that capture significant moments in the plot, keeping the devotional mood.
I have “finished” five images already. I’m kind of flying by the seat of my pants here, so I’m not sure what the total images will be.
Stations of the Wave I: Johnny Utah Is Called From The Rain
Stations Of The Wave II: Johnny Is Bestowed With A Holy Mission
Stations Of The Wave III: Johnny Is Assisted In His Quest By A Wise Old Man
Stations Of The Wave IV: The Ex-Presidents Prey On The People
Stations Of The Wave V: Johnny Utah Just Can’t Let It Go

At first I thought giving him this facial expression was a mistake. Then I realized it wasn’t.

Well, this series certainly isn’t stylistically consistent.
I think the guy on the right looks like Mitch McConnell.
Spider-Hulk In Progress
So, I’m doing another Spider-Hulk painting, and this time he’s battling Doctor Octo-Head. It’s going to be two 12×16 panels, because my printer can only print up to 13×19. I build the blueprint in photoshop, and then I paint it. Also pictured is the right panel printed out.
