The Fairest in the Land
Fun fact: Zooey Deschanel is one of my long-enduring celebrity crushes. She’s hilarious, classy, genuine, and I love all her acting roles and music. I may or may not have sent her fan mail once, and I may or may not have received an autographed photo in return, which may or may not be framed in my home…
Anyway, Zooey Deschanel was the inspiration for a character that I had a lot of fun with in my writing: Snow White!
Since everybody knows Snow White in some form or another (Disney, Once Upon a Time, that Chris Hemsworth movie, the original fairy tale, I can go on and on…), I made it a goal to make her stand out among the other adaptations. She has her demons, but she’s starting a new chapter of her life, and she picks her own apples now! There’s no fooling her twice…
But of course, I don’t want to give you her whole life story here. I’ll let her do most of the talking here.
Jacob: So… wow. You’ll have to forgive me. I know we’ve talked before, but I still get a little starstruck every time we do this. Snow White! Live in the flesh! I AM NOT WORTHY!
Snow: Oh, pshaw. How you flatter me! There’s no need to–gosh, what’s the word you use in this world? Fanman?
Jacob: Fanboy… I know, I know. I’ll try to contain my emotions this. I’m just so excited to talk to you! You’re an icon! Okay, I’m done now. Snow, tell me about your life! Readers are so curious to know about your role in THE CARVER. What can you tell them?
Snow: I can tell them that it starts off in the happiest time of my life. All the drama with my stepmother was far behind me, and I just tied the knot with the loveliest man in any world. When the story begins, I’m finally about to move in with him so we can start our future together! It’s what I always dreamed of.
Jacob: Go you! Happily ever after, yeah?
Snow: Unfortunately, not exactly. But it starts off pretty wonderful.
Jacob: I interviewed Hansel last week and he told me all about your fantastic cooking. He thinks very highly of you! What’s your friendship like?
Snow: We go back a very long way. We first met in this beautiful meadow where I used to go and gather flowers. One day I showed up, and he had already gathered a bouquet for me. One thing I can say about Hansel is that he’s very sweet. He’s a great friend. He just has some things to sort out in his life. And he knows this.
Jacob: That was sort of the impression I got from him as well. I once told my editor: I will know if I’ve made it as an author if I start to see memes and t-shirts rooting for Team Hansel, Team Pietro, or Team Liam. Obviously you’re Team Liam! What can you tell us about the prince?
Snow: He’s a dream. Sweet. Clever. Handsome. Charming, obviously. He’s more than I deserve. One other thing I can say is that he doesn’t know his own strength and everything he’s capable of. On some level, I think he may even be afraid of his potential, because he doesn’t try very hard to reach it. Although, to be fair, his tutor has always been a little, um, intense for my liking. The more Liam trains, the more he hates training. There’s no violent bone in his body.
Jacob: Can we say the same about you?
Snow: *laughs* I think you might be surprised. It’s the nature of the Old World. You need to know how to defend yourself in a land of dragons, witches, werewolves, giants, aquamantulas–
Jacob: Wait, did I hear that correctly? Did you just say aquamantulas? Are those what I think they are?
Snow: They’re horrid.
Jacob: I’m just going to pretend I never heard that word. *flinches* What else do you want readers to know about THE CARVER?
Snow: The villain is terrifying. But I want to tell the readers not to be afraid because the good guys are strong. We’ve all been through some dangerous things that scarred us, but they also made us more resilient. I’m so much stronger after my sleeping curse. After all that rest I got, villains should be afraid of me. My husband and I are not to be messed with!
Jacob: Alright! *applauds* Villains of the Old World, beware! Snow, I am so excited for readers to spend time with you. It’s really just an honor to tell this one chapter of your epic story. I hope I’ve done you justice.
Snow: Don’t you fret, Jacob! If any aspiring writers are reading your blog, I’d like them to know this: when there’s a story in your heart, you must tell it. The muse trusted you enough to put it there. You can’t do it justice if you don’t try.
Jacob: Wise words from the woman herself! Now I have just one request…
Snow: What do you desire? Make a wish!
Jacob: *embarrassed smile* I really wanna try one of your apple pies…
Snow: I think that can be arranged. Invite me back?
Jacob: That can always be arranged.
I hope all of you have the opportunity to enjoy your weekend and the start of your summer! Don’t forget to stop by next weekend. You have a prince to meet!

Interview with Hansel
Actual conversation I had with my editor a few months ago:
Regardless of who you picture when the name “Hansel” comes to mind, I think you’re going to have a lot of fun with him in July! I loved the feedback I received about him when I was working with critique partners, and I especially love that he’s been a polarizing character. Many people will love and sympathize with him. If, for whatever reason, you decide that you can’t stand him–though I can’t imagine why anyone would ever decide that ;)–then that’s great, too! I’m not going to give too much of his role away because I want you to explore that yourself, but no matter how you feel about him throughout the book, you’ll be absolutely right.
To give you a small preview of how his mind works, here is a snapshot of the interview I conducted with Hansel!
Jacob: So, over the past few weeks, I’ve been interviewing characters who live in my world. Welcome, by the way! We’ve heard from Pino and Crescenzo over in Virginia, their goofy neighbor Pietro, and the mysterious girl in the red hood from New York City. They make up one branch of The Carver‘s narrative. The other branch starts with you, and it couldn’t be more of a stark contrast to what’s going on in the New World. Where are you when everything starts?
Hansel: I’m about to acquire a new home from a dear friend, but not without some second thoughts, of course. I’m not overly fond of houses in the woods.
Jacob: I wouldn’t be either if I were you! You’ve got history, my friend. By the way, you’re pretty famous in our world, you know. Everybody associates you with the story of the witch and the candy house, but that was just one day in your life. I want the readers to see more. Tell the readers about how your life has changed since then. What have you and Gretel been up to?
(Hansel goes quiet and stares at his knees for an abnormally long time, and it’s the saddest thing I’ve ever seen.)
Jacob: Hansel? You okay?
Hansel: We, uh … I do odd jobs here and there. Nothing memorable.
Jacob: I see. Great. What do you do for fun?
Hansel: Where I come from, it’s hard to grow bored. There are caverns to explore, marvels to gaze upon, and people to know! Although, you probably wouldn’t be surprised to know that I’m what you people call a “foodie”.
Jacob: We have that in common! Tell me more about some of those delicious Old World nomz. How’s the grub life?
Hansel: We keep it pretty simple. We love our breads. Meat… pork so tender it melts in your mouth. Cheese. But do you know where the best dining can be done?
Jacob: Let’s see, I would guess Midas’s Pub by the bell tower?
Hansel: If you wish to vomit! I jest. Midas’s Pub isn’t so bad. But no greater fare can be found than the meals prepared by Snow White.
Jacob: Ahh, Snow White! I should’ve known… enlighten me, Hansel!
Hansel: She makes this outstanding pumpkin soup, especially when I’m not feeling so well. She squeezes her own lemonade and brews wonderful teas. And her pies! Her apple pies! Darkness could devour the land, chum, and all one needs to feel right in the world is a piece of pie and a glass of milk. Snow White can do all of that and more.
Jacob: Hmm, I may have to pay her a visit soon. I’m feeling a little hungry! Anyway, it sounds like you and Snow White know each other pretty well. Am I right? What’s your relationship like? Are you friends, are you neighbors? What are you?
Hansel: We are but friends. I’ve never regarded her as anything more, despite her striking beauty and her fundamental goodness and the fact that we’ve known each other for years and she smells like cinnamon and sugar. I would trust Snow White with my life.
Jacob: She sounds awesome! That’s it, I’m inviting her onto my blog next week!
Hansel: She’s coming to see you? May I join her?
Jacob: I’m not sure that’s necessary. I like to get you all in private when I can. Just so we can get to the deep stuff! On that subject, I’d really like to know one more thing. If you had one wish, something you could ask from a birthday cake or a well or a magic lamp or whatever, what would you wish for?
Hansel: *strokes chin* That’s a rather daunting question. Might you elaborate? What would I wish for in this moment, or in my whole life?
Jacob: Either! I’ll go first to give you some time to think. At this very moment, I wish for an ice cold Dr. Pepper.
Hansel: Doctor Who?
Jacob: No, I haven’t watched that show yet. Oh, wait! Sorry, I keep forgetting you wouldn’t know about Dr. Pepper. I’ll have to treat you to a soda. I know this Arizona heat can’t be very pleasant for you.
Hansel: I cannot say it’s my favorite kind of weather. I prefer rain.
Jacob: Maybe that’s your wish?
Hansel: No. I wish for more time with my sister.
The interview didn’t end there, but at that point, he got a little emotional and out of respect for his privacy, I decided to give you the abridged version here. However, you’ll get to know him quite well when THE CARVER releases on July 19th!
I’m a sucker for a well-made apple turnover, so I think next week, let’s talk to the fairest in the land herself: Snow White!

The Girl in the Red Hood
Happy weekend, friends!
I’m beyond thrilled that Blaze Publishing released the first teaser for The Carver this past week! What do you all think? Does it make you hungry?
You all are going to love Pietro! But of course, I hope you come to love everyone in The Carver’s world(s), and that’s why I’m happy to introduce THE GIRL IN THE RED HOOD today! She’s “shrouded” in a bit of a mystery, so it didn’t really come as a shock to me when I found out she couldn’t meet up for an interview. My request didn’t go ignored though! I received this letter from her in response. She granted me permission to share it with you, which is fortunate because it was addressed for you.
Dear Readers of Jacob/Mr. Devlin (not sure what he prefers?)’s Blog,
Thank you so very much for thinking of me and inviting me to talk to you all. I’m sorry I can’t be there today since I’m traveling, but I’m truly so excited for The Carver and glad I have a chance to help promote it. I never dreamed that somebody would bring my story to life someday. At first, it made me a little mad. It’s just that I’m a very private, introverted person. I don’t like the idea of the limelight, or of having people look at me. I’m a wallflower. But then I really took to the idea. It’s grown on me to the point that my heart is full. This has been an eventful and formative time in my life. These are the days I will always remember, no matter where I am when this journey is over. If my story can bring joy, understanding, appreciation, comfort, or even a few hours of entertainment to just one person out there, I’ll be happy. I know there have been many times when I could’ve used the comfort myself. I’ve grown up without a father. My mother is still on a Missing poster plastered all over New York. I’ve been in pain. But some wonderful things blossomed from that. If you follow along, I hope you’ll see what I’ve gained.
I know that doesn’t tell you much about me, but as I said, I’m pretty reserved. I emailed Mr. Devlin and asked if there’s anything else I can talk about in this letter, and we decided to do some word association for fun. He picked out eight (very random) words for me, so here we go…
Red Hood: Used to be my mom’s. Isn’t there also a Batman villain named Red Hood?
Prince: Aw, RIP

Interview with The Carver
Hello everybody!
First of all, did you see Civil War yet? If not, I’ll wait right here while you go watch. Or maybe I’ll go with you. Come on, let’s run!
Second of all, I’m revealing another character to the world today! As promised, I’m unveiling one each week right here on my blog and letting them explain the story of The Carver to you as they know it. Today, we meet The Carver himself: Pino DiLegno!
You know him better as Pinocchio. He’s not the puppet you once knew. He’s not even a “real boy” anymore. He’s a grown man, and he has some interesting things to say about his role in my book! Without further ado, let’s begin our interview!
Jacob: Welcome to my blog, Pino! It’s been a very taxing couple of months for you, hasn’t it? How are you holding up?
Pino: It’s good to see you, Jacob. As for how I’m holding up? I keep checking my back to see if I’ve sprouted strings. It’s a miracle someone’s not having to move me around! I’m a little exhausted…
Jacob: I’d be worried if you weren’t! A lot happens in your story. You’re The Carver himself! What do you want to tell the readers about the book? It all opens with you! What are you doing at the start of the book?
Pino: Carving a figurine! It’s one of my favorite things to do. After all, I exist because of a skilled woodcarver cared enough to shape me. It’s important for me to appreciate that and continue the legacy.
Jacob: And somehow I get the feeling that the figurines you like to carve aren’t random. There’s something special about all of them, isn’t there?
Pino: Maybe *winks*. My figures don’t necessarily come to life, but they’re important. In some ways, they’re prophecies. They tell their beholder what to look for. They’re almost like a road map.
Jacob: That’s an interesting take on the figures. So here’s something that even I’ve been curious about. When you’re carving these things, what goes through your head? What do you see in your mind’s eye?
Pino: Every project is a different experience. Sometimes I don’t see anything. I feel it instead, like the wood has a heartbeat and I’m just trying to carve around it, like I’m setting it free. In those cases, I don’t even know what it’s going to look like until it’s done. Sometimes I close my eyes and I see something very vivid. It’s like watching a movie and my figurine is just capturing a freeze frame. And other times, I just carve for pleasure. There’s nothing “supernatural” or special about it most of the time. It’s just play for my fingers or a beautiful brain dump, the way art tends to be.
Jacob: And how many figurines have you carved?
Pino: Hmm… give or take a thousand, probably. But only a handful are part of the “road map” of my story. The rest? Well, maybe they’re part of another story entirely.
Jacob: Oooh, interesting! You know people are going to want you to elaborate a bit more. What can you tell us about this “chosen handful?”
Pino: Oh, well, they’re a diverse bunch for sure. You wouldn’t know they were special just looking at them, but I know. There’s a beautiful woman with these strange purple gloves, and she was always so familiar to me. There’s this striking young man dressed entirely in green, and his hand is hovering over a black dagger. You ever seen the old westerns where the cowboys are about to duel and their hands hover over their guns? That’s what this young man reminds me of. There are others, of course, each with their own unique stories.
Jacob: So what’s your story, Pino? Why’d you grow up?
Pino: For the same reason I suspect many children decide they want to grow up… getting tired of being lectured to clean my room. Wanting to be taken seriously. Wanting to be able to go outside whenever I wanted. The only difference between me and the other kids who wish that? I actually knew somebody with the power to make it happen.
Jacob: I knew that feeling pretty well, too! And now I’m twenty-five and sometimes I’d give almost anything to be twelve again. Do you feel the same?
Pino: Sometimes. But I get to relive my youth through my son, Crescenzo. I see him trying to hurry things along and grow up, too, but I just wish he’d stay fifteen. I know his struggle, though. It’s strange to think of the days when I was trying to understand my identity. Was I a puppet? Was I a boy? Was I both? Now I see Crescenzo dealing with that in a different way. Is he a man? Is he a boy? Sooner or later he’ll figure out that he’s both. And I hope he stays that way.
Jacob: You seem to care very much for Enzo.
Pino: More than you could ever know, my friend.
Jacob: That’s very moving, Pino. Thank you for opening up about that. I have one more question for you. What has been your favorite experience in The Carver? Any scenes jump that you wish you could relive?
Pino: *laughs* Not in the slightest. Sorry! It’s just been all too taxing… physically, emotionally, psychologically… I’ll respectfully decline the do-over. No offense!
Jacob: None taken! It’s my job to challenge you all. It’s my favorite job.
Pino: Then here’s to the future adventures!
Jacob: Long live The Carver! Cheers!
I’m so excited to share that Blaze Publishing is unveiling “Ten Weeks of Teasers” starting this week, and you’ll be getting to see some snippets of the actual writing if you check back on Social Media every week! As for next week, it will be time to meet somebody very special to The Carver’s universe: THE GIRL IN THE RED HOOD!
Have a wonderful week, everybody!

Interview with The Flying Man
I’m so excited, you guys!
Last week I started introducing you all to my characters one-by-one. We started with Crescenzo, the young reluctant hero of The Carver. Today, I want you all to meet his “goofy uncle”, The Flying Man! That’s not his real name, of course. It’s Pietro Volo. You know him better as Peter Pan!
(Oh, and he looks like Chris Pratt, hence the gif!)
I really enjoyed writing this character, mostly because I feel like our “writer/character bond” was almost instantaneous and his personality, dialogue, and “inner world” came pretty naturally to me. What’s Pietro’s story, you ask? Well, you’re in luck, because I’m interviewing him today! What better way to get to know a character than to sit down and hear about them from their own mouths, right? Right. So, let us begin!
Jacob: So, Pietro! Thanks for sitting in on my blog today! I decided we’re gonna do these things Jimmy Fallon style, and you’re my first actual guest. Isn’t that awesome?!
Pietro: Aw, c’mon, Jay! You know I wouldn’t let you down! Also, I was promised pizza. Do we have an ETA on that yet, by the way?
Jacob: Interview first, then pizza. I promise it’ll be quick. So, last week, I told my readers all about Crescenzo–
Pietro: Favorite kid ever. Is he here right now?
Jacob: Not today. Anyway, we’ve been gearing up for release day, and people want to know all about you! I may have told everyone you were one of my favorites.
Pietro: Really?! Shucks, Jay, I’m actually turnin’ a little red here… Wow!
Jacob: Don’t let it go to your head, man. First question! Tell my wonderful readers about your role in The Carver. What’s your part in all of this?
Pietro: Well, I live next door to Crescenzo, and his dad and I are best buds. That makes me like Crescenzo’s fun wacky uncle. And as his fun uncle, I get to take him on this sweet road trip all across the country. You might say that kinda makes me the main character. I’m actually the star.
Jacob: Well, technically, Crescenzo’s the main character. It’s really his show.
Pietro: Uh, rude, Jay. I feel just a little underappreciated. I didn’t argue with you when you called this project The Carver, even though I’m on way more pages than Pinocchio is. You can at least acknowledge that I’m the main dude.
Jacob: *sigh* fine, you’re the star, Pietro.
Pietro: The second star to the right!
Jacob: Yup. So you and Crescenzo go on this road trip together, and we can admit that it turns out to be a ton of fun, doesn’t it? But I want to make sure the readers know it’s not really for a fun purpose. Something forces you out of your homes, and there’s actually something really dangerous underlying that road trip. Do you wanna share a little more?
Pietro: How much more can I say? I’m afraid I’ll reveal too much and you’ll get all cranky and hog the pizza…
Jacob: Well, what’s the main goal of the road trip? Why do you and Enzo leave home all of a sudden?
Pietro: We’re looking for our families. It’s sad, really. Growing up was supposed to be fun, but in the end all I really got out of it was bills. And I love my family of course, but do you know how much I blame myself for the day they vanished? Sometimes I think I should’ve just stayed young.
Jacob: So why did you grow up? I think that’s what people really want to know. You were the boy who was going to stay young forever. Now you’re what? Like thirty-five years old?
Pietro: And counting. I probably shouldn’t tell everyone how I grew up, but the why had a lot to do with a certain girl in my life. Now I’m in this boring office job, my blood type is caffeine, and I have to pretend to care about politics every four years. Deep down, though, I love this new life. I love video games and shopping for Nikes and driving my truck!
Jacob: Driving! That was the other thing I wanted to ask you about. I wondered how you really felt about driving. It must’ve been a weird adjustment, considering you can fly and all.
Pietro: Adjustment? Nahhh! It’s so much easier than flying, and yet this world makes people wait until they’re sixteen. All you have to do is sit there. You just sit there. Flying is hard! I saw so many flying accidents in Neverland, Jay. It was sad. But it was always because someone wasn’t being careful, smuggling rum from Captain Hook or something… good thing there aren’t any cell phones in Neverland.
Jacob: Oh, just you wait, my friend! You and I still have a couple more books together–assuming you live through them all–and I would love to shake things up in Neverland. Thanks for the great idea! *writes on a legal pad* Cell phones in Neverland…
Pietro: Oh, no. What have I done…?
Jacob: Pizza’s here! Pietro, thanks so much for being a guest on my blog today. Will you come back to hang out again soon?
Pietro: *mouth full* Duh! I love these people!
Jacob: And they’re gonna love you, Peter! Can’t wait for the big road trip!
So, gotta fly! (See what I did there?) But next week is another week, and I’ll be inviting you to meet another character. I think I’ll introduce you to The Carver himself: Pino(cchio) DiLegno! If you have any questions you’re dying to ask Pinocchio, send them my way!
Have a fantastic week, everybody!

The Carver’s Son
Hello world!
I hope you had a fantastic weekend! I myself really enjoyed catching The Huntsman: Winter’s War at the theater on Saturday, and I was also excited to finish reading Firefight by Brandon Sanderson. The man knows how to weave a world together, and I love the ideas he comes up with to invent flawed heroes and villains that really pop!
Speaking of heroes, as we draw a little closer to The Carver‘s release, I want to introduce you to a boy who I’ve grown very fond of over the past fifteen months. My appreciation for him didn’t come naturally. We really had to work and put in long hours to take to each other, but I hope you’ll discover what I did: Once Crescenzo (creh-SHEN-zoh) wins you over, he’ll be there to stay.
Enzo isn’t the standard “white knight” you’d expect to take center stage in a fairy tale. He’s not some daring prince in sterling silver armor. Nah. He’s just a high school kid from Virginia who’s going to have to save the world in Converse, jeans, and a band t-shirt. Oh, and there’s one thing he doesn’t know: His father is Pinocchio, and his best friend/next door neighbor is the son of Peter Pan. So he has that going for him at least…
But it’s not like Enzo’s ever slain a dragon. He’s never even held a sword before. He’s not really all that brave or terribly athletic, and he gets average grades. His life isn’t overly exciting, but he does like to draw, and he can play a good drum solo if you ask nicely. You might have to catch him at the right time though. He can be a little moody sometimes (you know those terrible teen years) and downright stubborn, which might make things a little awkward if you give him a set of wooden figurines for his birthday. He’s way past the age where he can appreciate a stupid toy.
One thing’s for sure, though: family and friendship are everything to Crescenzo, and if anything threatens the ones he loves, he’s just stubborn enough to go to the edge of the Earth and beyond to protect them.
Also, I think he bears a slight resemblance to Logan Lerman.
Clearly he’s so grateful I said that.
Who are some of your favorite young heroes in YA? I’d love to hear about them! In the meantime, did you know there’s a giveaway goin’ on on Goodreads? Check it out!

The Art of Waiting
Friends! We’re an actual handful of days away from the cover reveal for THE CARVER! Ever since mid-February, I’ve had the hardest, most agonizing time keeping this under wraps, and on Wednesday, I can finally show the world! But these final five days are going to be excruciating. It’s like standing in a line to get on Space Mountain, and you’re finally in the shade and standing about 50 people away from the entrance to the building, and then the line starts moving again and you’re like “yaaassss!” and the line guy is counting people and waving them along and then you get right up to the line guy and then he’s like “Halt!”, and suddenly you’re literally standing one person away from the magic and it’s the longest part of the line. Amiright though?!
I mean, how did I ever survive those agonizing days of querying agents and publishers and waiting for responses, some of which could take up to six months for a simple “I’m not a good fit for this?”
How do we ever entertain ourselves?
How do we keep our composure?
Welp, luckily we don’t have to wait much longer, but there’s not much time for you to join the party!
That’s right! Wednesday, from 6PM-9PM EDT, the cover reveal party is going to happen so hard! There will be games, giveaways, authors, and prizes! I should know – I’m giving away something pretty awesome and desirable[image error]
Hope to get to know some of you and to hear/read your reactions to the cover next week! I already know what it looks like and I immediately fell in love, so this day is entirely for you. Until then . . . we can always be thankful to have good ol’ Jack to entertain us:

A Day in the Life…
Friends! Check it out: I made a YouTube channel! For my first video, I’m answering a question posed by my fantastic publishers at Blaze. If you could live the life of a fictional character for a day, who would you be? Let’s talk about this!
