Releasing May 14 - Clan Companions: Gabriel

 A little distraction

Gabriel was in heaven every second of the day. He could wander the freighter holding Takat’s hand or with Kisk’s arm around his shoulders, in front of everyone. He could kiss Baknu in the crowded dining hall. He was free.

Free.

Even now, Gabriel couldn’t have been happier. All he was doing was watching Takat play a game on his entertainment console while Baknu read from the vast library stored on his handheld. Kisk was running risk scenarios on his device. It was quiet. Domestic. Nonetheless, Gabriel could have shouted for joy.

Baknu sat on the mat, absentmindedly stroking his hair. Takat sat cross-legged by the Earther, their legs in contact. Kisk, who normally hated to be still, splayed on the floor, using Gabriel’s thigh for a pillow.

Heaven. Absolute paradise.

Baknu cleared his throat. Takat immediately paused his game. Kisk set his handheld aside and sat up, looking at their Dramok expectantly. Gabriel also turned his attention to the clan leader.

“Is your crew still sorting Cargo Bay Three, my Imdiko?”

Baknu’s tone was as mild as ever. Despite the lack of censure, Takat winced and colored. “Yeah. It’s me that’s holding things up, no one else. I’m a little behind, but everything will be organized before we dock.”

“Don’t worry. I can’t focus when Gabriel’s in the vicinity either.” Baknu’s amused attention shifted to their Earther, who gaped with surprise. “You require a project, my beauty, to keep you busy—and away from us—during duty hours.”

He’d just been reveling in how perfect life was. Gabriel pouted. “Maybe you need better control.”

“That’s true, but you’re asking a lot. To see you is to want you.”

The breakup

“I’m unwilling to give you up so easily, Gabriel.” As much as he appreciated the position his human lover was in, Baknu was definite on that. “We can and will figure this out.”

 “There’s nothing to figure out. Love isn’t meant for me. Can’t you see that?”

Another strike to Baknu’s heart. No one should believe in such a morose future. Certainly not someone like Gabriel.

Yet he’d uttered the word love. He saw the possibility with Clan Baknu. Despite the ache in his chest, Baknu’s pulse quickened.

Walking away from the weeping Earther was possibly the hardest thing Baknu had ever done, but necessary. The Dramok sensed insisting Gabriel listen to him at that moment would make things worse. Perhaps even spur Gabriel to make the awful separation final.

Leaving him crying in his shop was still heartbreakingly difficult.

Gabriel’s thoughts whirled. Clan Baknu wanted to court him. They wanted to explore the possibility of an actual, committed relationship.

The Dramok, who loomed over him, leaned closer. “I doubt I’d have to prove such a scenario. I believe you’d enjoy being with my clan. Shall I begin to make my case for it?”

As he spoke, his hand settled on Gabriel’s knee. It moved upward, rubbing his thigh. The fingers spread halfway up, paused to squeeze.

Gabriel sat frozen, surrounded by that sweet-spicy scent he’d detected on the Kalquorians back at the shop. He couldn’t move as Baknu drew closer. Closer. The Dramok’s breath warmed his lips.

Baknu kissed him.

Really kissed him. His tongue stroked Gabriel’s, tasting. Exploring. His hand slid up Gabriel’s thigh, closing in on where the young man’s pulse pounded hardest, where each beat brought secret flesh awake, alert, eager. The clandestine touch neared his swelling crotch, and Gabriel’s need reached for that warmth, pleading for another’s caress as Baknu kissed him without a pause.

“It is a felony, according to his world. I bet he’s never been with anyone.” A delicious shiver raced down Baknu’s spine. Gabriel had exhibited naked desire, mixed with a compelling lack of hope at their offer. The sudden vision of proving to the boy he could give in to his cravings, of holding him close, of watching him crumble as his longings were fulfilled—

 

“An innocent. Imagine being his first,” Takat breathed. For once, he wasn’t eyeing the food kiosks they passed like a desperate lover.

“Trust me, I’m imagining it.” Kisk barked laughter, his spicy-sweet arousal scent the strongest of the trio.

“We all are.” Baknu’s voice was quiet as he considered Gabriel.

An offer that can't be believed...

The freedom to be himself, with no fear of repercussions. Was that what this Baknu proposed? A life on Kalquor itself, out of reach of Earth’s judgment? His soul cried for the sweet promise of no more lies, no more pretending, no more nightmares—and no more loneliness.

 He fought off impossible hope and spoke, the words fish hooks tearing his throat. “Not possible.”

“Entirely possible. You just have to take a chance.” Takat’s regard was gentle. The men’s attention was riveted on him again, as if they’d forgotten Iliana stood there.

“Are you really going extinct?” Gabriel wasn’t sure where the words came from.

“Within three hundred years, or so the rumors say.” Baknu stepped closer to him, close so Gabriel caught the scent of his cologne. Sweet. Cinnamon-y. Like candy. Or pastry. Can I have a lick?

“Well, good luck with surviving. I’m not in the market for a husband, let alone three. Gabriel, did your visitor take off?” Iliana wandered off, dismissing the Kalquorians.

Gabriel had no answer. He was stuck in place, unable to move as the alien trio shifted nearer to him. Close enough to touch, to run his hands all over those powerful physiques. Prophets, he wanted to. So bad, it hurt.

The captain’s voice was velvet. “I am Dramok Baknu, captain of a delivery freighter currently docked here. My clanmates, Nobek Kisk—” he of the lecherous wink “—and Imdiko Takat. Whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

Normally, Gabriel wouldn’t have responded, except to order those who posed a danger to his sister out of the shop. He was too off-balance to think twice. “Gabriel. Gabriel Rossi.”

“Hello, Gabriel.” The manner in which Baknu spoke his name, caressing the syllables, was like being physically touched.

 

Where had the air gone? He couldn’t draw a proper breath.

The broad-shouldered Takat looked him over, much as the winking Kalquorian had. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“Yes. A great pleasure.” Nobek Kisk’s growling tone shook Gabriel’s bones. His intense stare told him what was on his mind.

Iliana gave Gabriel’s sleeve a sharp tug to wake him from the hypnotic spell the aliens had cast. “He’s unavailable too, Kalqs. Are you trying to get him killed? If the wrong people saw how you’re looking at him…”

“You should go with them.”

Gabriel started at Iliana’s surprising comment, dropping packages of dark chocolate truffles. He huffed and picked them up. “You’re interested in joining a clan?”

“I didn’t say me. I said you.”

“You expect me to leave you alone? With all that’s happened? All that could happen? Like the man stated, you catch a lot of shit.”

“There’s a bounty on you, Gabe. The kind of money that makes awful people do awful things.” Tears shimmered in her eyes.

“Kisk plans to warn off Mit-noc.”

“There are others who’ll take his place.”

Gabriel’s stomach churned. The Kalquorians could have been lying about the bounty as part of their campaign to coerce Iliana into going to their empire. It was more than a little possible.

As someone who’d spent most of his life in a falsehood, he had good instincts for deception. He suspected Clan Baknu was honest in their assertions that Mit-noc and Nal would go to great lengths to bring him to Dantovon. He was positive they were telling the truth.

No matter. The circumstances boiled down to one inescapable fact: he couldn’t leave Iliana, even at the risk of life and limb.

First meeting

As Gabriel met his gaze, his pulse pounding in his ears, the other man’s attention focused on him with laser-beam intensity.

The alien looked Gabriel over, taking in the expensive shoes, well-cut trousers, and silk blue shirt that matched his eyes. The stare swept up until it greeted Gabriel’s again.

A grin appeared, dazzling against the black facial hair. A knowing leer, as if he’d discovered Gabriel’s best-guarded secret.

 

The alien winked at him. His lips moved, forming silent words. Pretty boy.

Gabriel felt as if he’d been punched in the gut, without the pain. He couldn’t breathe. He felt strangely warm, his body almost light enough to leave the ground. He tried to speak, but his lips had gone numb. He had no idea what he’d have said anyhow.

The Kalquorian’s grin stretched larger. He nodded, as if to answer a question Gabriel hadn’t asked.
