Reviews: Letterkenny

I generally don’t write reviews. I know what you’re thinking: “Why the f**k would you have an opinion on anything?”
True enough, I suppose. But anyone who’s read my novels and actually follow the mad ravings I post on social media know that … well … I’m quite opinionated … even though I try not to be too “judgy” if you know what I mean.
“Whoa! Peddle the Breaks now!” you might say, since this is probably the most I’ve ever really written on a blog post, let alone the rampant fart jokes on FB. BUT buckle-up, buttercup! Because this is my first ever review on my blog!
So, after that rather long and lengthy introduction, I’ll dial back about 20% of my anecdotes and delve right into the heart of it: The Review of Letterkenny…
“There are 5,000 people in Letterkenny. These are their problems.”
This is the brief but glorious intro to just about every episode of a series based in a fictional, rural town in Ontario. If you don’t know where Ontario is–God help you–just know that the series is based in Canada, so, just as some of my word choices above have indicated, there are some colloquialisms that you might need to hear a few times before they start to sink in.
The series was created by Jared Keeso and Jordan Beirnes, the former contributed to much of the writing and directing of each episode. It is on CraveTV, which is, unfortunately, inaccessible for subscription to us folks in the USA. Therefore, I watched two of four wonderful seasons on Hulu.
Don’t let Canada’s obvious attempt of “cold-heartedly” sequestering such joy from her, as of late, seemingly mildly-retarded cousin (Sorry, I mean mentally impaired). This show is a gem, as it follows the lives of the “hicks, skids, hockey players and Christians,” each group trying to make their impact in a town that … well … is at least big enough to have a produce stand, a hockey team and a bar (hmm … which I believe might have closed).
The primary protagonist is Wayne, who is a “hick,” is the “toughest person in town,” which is important thing to know, and is played by Jared himself. Other primary characters are his sister Katy, his friend Daryl, who they “affectionately” call Dary, and Dan, who we later discover is “too fat to run.” Then, of course, there are the secondary characters, who are pulled from the before mentioned groups.
Unlike my normal brain fodder that I read, watch and, well, write, there are no gratuitous explosions, gun battles or otherworldly sets (okay, rural Ontario could be considered that). Each episode, instead, treats you to beautiful wordplay as characters often throw barbs at each other … or just sit around and ponder the nature of people and things, such as ongoing discussions about schneef, fundip and horns. If you, like me prior to watching this show, had no idea what I just said, Letterkenny will broaden not only your Canadian vocabulary but also your mind.
Anyhoo, “tick-tock” you might say, since you obviously have better things to do than keep reading this. So, I’ll wrap this up and “pitter-patter” off to the rest of my day as well. And, besides, I heard about this thing call the “Internet,” which has other seasons of Letterkenny that I can watch without violating the law…

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
My friends and my family lost loved ones last year. I’m thankful for the people I have in my life, and I’m thankful for having known those who are no longer with us.
To my readers: Thank you. And thank you for allowing me to have a little fun with my writing style.
PUBLISHER’S NOTES
Thank you for giving this book a read. We do apologize for the bawdy language—the author insists that it is necessary for both context and plot. We figure that he’s just doing it because he uses F-bombs for punctuation in his daily life, and believes everyone, for some reason, speaks that way. Also, since we’re an Indie-house … C’est la vie…
Hmm, French … well, that does bring up another topic: Not all of the characters in this book actually speak English. However, instead of writing a good chunk of dialogue in ancient languages as LB wanted to, we decided that it would be easier for the reader if we provided the best English equivalent … unless the story necessitated an ancient or foreign word here or there.
Welcome to Ixion, the First Book of Of Monsters, Gods and Heroes…

Guy picking a fight with the wind (or a ghost)…
Sooooo … ...
Sooooo … the other day I was trying to find a spot for lunch, and noticed a fellow who was having a fight with the wind. And when I say “fight,” I mean like a full-on closed-fist, slugging match. He also was throwing a few curses in for good measure.
Did he win? I think so … he seemed to be pointing down and telling the wind off at the end of it…
I just think what it would be like if he lost…

Hi everyone! Just another month until my new novel, Ixion, is released. Please find the book description below:
IXION…
Countless Titans, Demons and Monsters have been thrown into Tartarus—their vile natures condemning them to the dark depths. They are cut off from the Elysian Fields and will never know the endless joy and serenity that the just and goodhearted souls have been rewarded for their endeavors in life.
Sure, there are the unjust and depraved souls here too in the Underworld. They endure their punishments on the border between Tartarus and the Realm of Paradise. Even these souls, however, are far enough away from either. The laughter, music and whimsy of Happiness—or, by contrast, the wallowing, terrifying wails and anguish of Damnation—are only heard if the conditions are right. But such souls will seldom hear any noises other than what they themselves make. They are in their own hell, their own self-induced tortures … their selfish natures granting them some relief in the afterlife.
But some souls are not granted such mercy. What they have done in life is too terrible, too unforgivable. Too abominable. They are the ones to be feared, to be loathed, and to be held as pariahs for future generations to judge and scorn. While some of these souls are still hidden away—their forms and punishments too unpleasant for those to enjoy a proper Paradise—they are still forced to hear both the torture of the cursed and the laughter of the blissful.
Then again, some souls are meant to be seen. Some are used as constant reminders of what they had done to anger the Gods … For in the Sky of the Underworld and for all to see, one such soul has been on a flaming wheel for eons. Snakes not only bind him to it but also lash out at him with venom-soaked jaws. He is meant to be in constant torment; however, even as the fire burns at his dead skin, even as the snakes inject him with burning poison, one desire has kept him defiant…
He wants to set the world on fire. Kill EVERYTHING in it.
Then … despite the Underworld having been sealed away from the rest of the world for millennia … he gets free.

Here’s some science for all ya:
At-home DNA testing is supposed to give people insight into their human ancestry, but it’s had the unexpected effect of showing how much of our DNA isn’t human. Now we know that Europeans and Asians have approximately 2 percent Neanderthal DNA, and that proportion may well increase, now that scientists have sequenced the genomes of five new Neanderthal specimens that lived between 39,000 and 47,000 years ago.
