Weekend Writing Warrior – 6/15/14

Friends, I have great news to share! I found out that I’ve been named a finalist for Passionate Ink RWA’s 9th annual Passionate Plume contest not once, but TWICE! Both August Awakening (Hot Nights in St. Blaise #8) and Daring Miss December (Hot Nights in St. Blaise #12)

To celebrate I’m sharing 8 sentences from August Awakening!

****

“Hi. My name is Jenny and I am a convicted fence murderer. I plotted and planned, stalking my prey, measuring it’s, uh, timbers, and taking aim at just the right…pole thingy.”

Alex’s laser-hot eyes bore holes into her. He didn’t seem to be amused.

“Um, I…” She glanced at the other’s expectant faces and a hot rush of shame scalded her cheeks. Being ordered to alcohol awareness classes may have seemed like a joke to her, but to some of these people it mattered.

August Awakening_Maggie Wells

Blurb:

The only things Jennifer Clyburn admits being addicted to are Caramello bars, shoe sales, and diet cherry Cokes from the Sonic. But there is one advantage to being ordered to attend alcohol awareness classes—she gets to spend a good hour each week ogling local bad boy, Alex Stephenson.

Once the crowned prince of St. Blaise, Alex grew up spoiled rotten and cocky as hell. The world was his oyster up until the day everything spun out of control. The red Corvette he got for his eighteenth birthday was a total loss. So was the sixteen-year-old girl in his passenger seat.

Ten years later, scarred and broken, Alex is back in St. Blaise leading the local recovery meetings and hoping to spare someone the guilt and grief he’ll carry with him the rest of his life.

Jenny Clyburn seems to be the kind of good-time girl he used to love, but he’s smart enough to recognize the demons that drive her. Her smart mouth is temptation incarnate, and her docile nature a siren song. Unable to resist, Alex takes it upon himself to teach her the best ways to master her impulses and surrender to that which she can’t control.

Weekend Writing Warrior – 6/8/14

Greetings! Here are 8 more from The Last First Date!

“We are so good at that, we should do that all the time.”

A chuckle shook his shoulders. “Okay.”

“You’d be all right with that?”

He raised his head enough to look her in the eye. “After we have dinner or see a movie.”

His stubborn insistence on dating her made her giddy. “Still trying to make sure I’ll respect you in the morning?”

The Last First Date

Nanee’s review:

Loved this quirky, funny, lighthearted and sexy as hell story. Great characters, love Lang and Jessica too cute together, they are so freaking funny and made for each other. Lang is a Detective and his gun chewing date steals gum and gets arrested, Jessica is a wreck, she’s back staying with her mom, getting a new job, not much money and her car breaks down. in comes Detective dreamy to the rescue. Loved it from start to finish, wish there was more but hey it was great. Very sexy and sweet. 5 stars

Weekend Writing Warrior – 6/1/14

Just one more day until The Last First Date releases as part of the Harlequin-E Contemporary Boxed Set Volume 2!

Here are a fast eight from The Last First Date:

“We’re going to be good, Jessica,” he whispered the promise into her skin, imprinting himself on her, “better than either of us ever imagined.”

His promises were cut off by a low-frequency whoop and a whirl of blue lights.

Lang’s first instinct was to throw his body over hers, but the sound of a car door, then the crunch of approaching footsteps brought him to his senses. After jerking her shirt down and her pants up, he rolled back into his seat and yanked the lapels of his suit coat closed over his gaping fly. The butt of a flashlight tapped the glass. Muttering a string of expletives, he lowered his window and allowed the bitterness of a night gone tragically wrong to cool the heat of the moment.

“Evening, Langley.”

Just a little over a week until The Last First Date releases as part of the Harlequin-E Contemporary Boxed Set Volume 2!

Here are a fast eight from The Last First Date:

“We could have been in your bed by now.” Her voice was a low, husky taunt. Her smile was pure temptation. “Kiss me.”

His resolve crumbled like a stale saltine. He crossed the line without another moment of thought, cradling the base of her skull and pulling her into the abyss with him. Their tongues tangled and her hands cruised over the front of his shirt.

“We could pretend this is our third date and work backwards from there,” she whispered.

Weekend Writing Warrior – 5/11/14

I’m on the road and I almost forgot! Here’s a quick eight from my WIP Full Court Press

“You’ll be glad to know you aren’t the only one manning the welcome wagon.”

Her nose wrinkled when she grinned. Just a little, but enough to make him want to grab her and kiss her senseless. “I can’t believe he didn’t come over here and lick you cleats, Byron is all about the football, you know.”

He managed a sage nod. “Oh, I heard.”

Kate picked up on his sentiment and nodded right along. “Play your cards right and he’ll keep you in Gatorade and mouth guards for years to come.”

Weekend Writing Warrior – 5/4/14

It’s May already and I have nothing prepared! Here’s a quick eight from book #5 in my Hot Nights in St. Blaise series – Mr. Mayhem.

****

“Melanie.”

She tried to stifle a smile but failed miserably. The trembling of his muscles wasn’t from the strain of harnessing his lust or the result of pleasure rippling through that long, lean body. No, this time those glorious little quakes were the result of a blast of air conditioning and a lack of coverings. He was naked. And completely at her mercy.

A low growl accompanied another fierce tug on the nylons tethering him to the bed. “Don’t pull, you’ll only make them tighter,” she warned.

****

Mr. Mayhem

May-MD

Lab tech Melanie Curtis claims Dr. Marc Mayhew’s shy smile won her vote for Mr. May, but the fact is she’s been aching to get a taste of the delicious Pathologist’s mochachino skin since the moment she set eyes on him.

Quiet and reserved, Marc was happy to take refuge in his research until she walked into his lab. He tried to ignore the attraction that sparked and sizzled each time she drew near, all too aware of the strict edicts issued by the hospital’s Human Resources department, but he couldn’t deny that he wouldn’t mind subjugating himself to his bossy little subordinate. Over and over again.

The only variable he couldn’t predict was how far Melanie was willing to go to get the results she expected. When she tests his mettle, Marc finds he’s more than willing to risk everything on a case of chemistry run amok if it means he can claim her as his. For keeps.

That’s it for now, folks. If you want to read more snippets, please be sure to check out the posts from my fellow Weekend Writing Warriors!

Weekend Writing Warrior – 4/27/14

Still working on my battle of the sexes story, Full Court Press. In this scene, my heroine is being wooed by a man who knows just what buttons to push to make a sporty girl fall in love.

Clutching her Tea Rex mug, Kate yanked open her front door and stared bleary-eyed at the “Come back after basketball season” doormat her sister had given her for Christmas. Her newspaper seemed to be missing, but there was an oversized shoe box centered just over the hoop printed on the sisal. She glanced from left to right, making sure no one was lurking in the shrubs waiting to snap a picture of her bending over in the nineties-era gym shorts and faded T-shirt she liked to call pajamas.

She curled the mug close to her chest and squatted, reaching out with one finger to flip the lid on the box. Breath caught in her lungs and she blinked in surprise. She had to blink, the shoes nestled in the folds of tissue paper were a swirl the most outlandishly obnoxious neon colors. The damn things were so bright mere humans would need a pinhole projector to view them properly, but she loved them on sight.

“Come to me, my pretties,” she whispered, setting her tea aside to draw the box closer.

Weekend Writing Warrior – 4/20/14

This week I’m sharing 8 lines from my current WIP, Full Court Press – a battle of the sexes between a legendary women’s basketball coach and the hotshot football coach the university brings in to revitalize a failing program. In this scene, Danny McMillan catches Kate Snyder shooting a few hoops to relax before a hot date with an over-friendly sports writer.

He let his gaze roam down her body and slowly back up again, taking in the gauzy skirt paired with gaudy athletic shoes. “Love the new uniform. Of course, see-through or not, every man in the place will be hoping that skirt flies up when there’s a jump ball.”

She blinked, a frown transforming the clean, classic lines of her face as she glanced at the skirt she wore. “It’s not see-through.”

He widened his eyes, trying for as innocent a look as a man could muster when imagining what went on under that pretty wisp of skirt. “No? Must just be my over-active imagination.”

Weekend Writing Warrior – 4/13/14

I had a visit from the cover art fairy! To celebrate I am sharing 8 sentences from my upcoming Harlequin-E Contemporary release, The Last First Date.

****

Guy Lombardo’s version of “Auld Lang Syne” drifted from the speakers. He turned to her and she lost the will to breathe. Good thing, because when he leaned over the console she was pretty sure the ability was gone too. The backs of his knuckles grazed her cheek and she leaned into the caress.

“Happy New Year, Jessica.”

She knew what was about to happen just as surely as she knew her own name, but that didn’t make it a good idea. “Lang.”

“Forget the old acquaintance, I want to know you.”

Now for the pretty!
