Weekend Writing Warrior – 11/24/13

Here’s a little something sweet for you: 8 lines from Daring Miss December (Hot Nights in St. Blaise #12).

“I have no breasts.”

Her announcement turned him to stone. Every muscle in his body braced for impact as his mind barreled ahead like a runaway train. For one crazy, breathless minute, he dared to hope she was making a self-effacing remark about being modestly endowed, but down in his gut he knew she meant exactly what she said. Swallowing hard, he scrounged for his voice, hoping the right words might come to him by the time he located it. In the end, all he managed was a deep, raspy, “No?”

She nodded but made no move to face him. “I thought I should tell you up front. I know you lost your wife to cancer, and I wanted to be as open with you as possible in case….”

DARING MS. DECEMBER

It’s never too late to learn the truth about love…if you dare.

Straight-laced hospital administrator Oliver Watkins has the heart of a rebel.

Coming of age in the free-wheeling seventies meant that Oliver’s rebellion manifested itself in always doing precisely what he was expected to do.

With his wife gone and his daughter grown, the survival of St. Blaise Regional Medical Center has become his main focus in life. That is, until the results of a routine blood test give him the nudge he needs to indulge in forbidden fruit.

Dietician Anne Silverstein has enjoyed a smorgasbord of experiences, but none shaped her life more dramatically than finding a lump in her breast at the ripe old age of twenty-six. In the years since she triumphed over death, Anne has learned to embrace life by taking each new day as it comes.

When Ollie Watkins, stumbles into her office looking for more than a few tips on lowering his cholesterol, throwing caution to the wind is a no-brainer for free-spirited Anne. But the home remedies Anne and Oliver cook up together leave them both ravenous for more. Suddenly one finds one day at a time is not enough and the other fears it’s way too much.

Weekend Writing Warrior – 11/17/13

Yesterday was my birthday and I’m full of cake! Here’s a little something sweet for you: 8 lines from Daring Miss December (Hot Nights in St. Blaise #12).

“Tell me what you want.”

Dark lashes lowered and Oliver’s shoulders slumped. The flush in his cheeks finally began to subside when he gave in and let gravity suck him back into the chair. His long torso rounded. The crisp tailored shirt he wore gaped between buttons, unaccustomed to this new elasticity borne of surrender.

“You,” he said when he looked up at her at last, his gaze startlingly vivid and direct. “I want you.”

His confession sparked a smile that warmed her down to her toes.

Weekend Writing Warrior – 11/10/13

Here’s a bit more from Going Deep:

““You were so snotty to me all through school.”

“I was scared shitless of you.”

“You were condescending and rude,” she retorted.

“Still am.” A wry smile twisted his lips. “And by the time I outgrew being scared, you were way out of my reach.” He framed her face with his hands, his palms cradling her cheeks and his long fingers stroking the tender lobes of her ears. “But you’re not now.”

Weekend Writing Warrior – 11/3/13

We have a couple of weeks before Daring Miss December is ready for release, so I thought I’d share a bit of what I’m working on now. Here are the opening lines from Going Deep:

“If I didn’t have Harley Cade and his ten million ways of making a girl happy, I’d cling to that man’s hull like a barnacle.”

Brooke drowned a smirk in her martini glass. The cocktail in her had was pinker than a My Little Pony, but the triple sec helped the vodka pack a punch that more than made up for the girly color. Trusting in the power of booze, she turned to face her best friend. “He told Mrs. Wise you had your Spanish conjugation written on your thigh.”

The terse reminders came automatically these days, but Laney remained as impervious to the power of sarcasm as she’d been in high school. But it was getting harder and harder to hold back the snark. All anyone wanted to talk about was the return of the great Brian Dalton.

New release!

Hot Nights in St. Blaise book #11 – Nabbing Mr. November is now available!

Nabbing Mr. November_Maggie Wells

Here’s the scoop on Luke and Elena:

There’s nothing like a butt full of birdshot to help a girl nab an elusive man.

The doctor becomes the patient when Luke Langston lands in St. Blaise’s overrun emergency room with a keister full of birdshot. Worse than the obvious Dick Cheney jokes, he has to endure the abject humiliation of having the one woman he wanted but never quite got round to calling pluck bits of shrapnel from his ass.

The minute Intern Elena Mendes pulls the last shard of shot from Luke Langston’s magnificent tuchas, she strips off her gloves and plants a big, wet kiss square on his assailant’s lips.

It was about time someone took Dr. Iceman down a notch. Or twenty.

Luke’s cockiness makes Elena crazy, but she can’t resist the sparks that fly each time she they butt heads. Every time he’s near, she’s compelled to turn it up a notch, curious to see how much heat it will take to melt the ice-man’s heart.

She doesn’t know Luke has been on a slow simmer since the day he first saw her. A tease, a taunt, a whispered confession and a heated kiss are all it takes to make their attraction boil over into something too hot to handle.

Weekend Writing Warrior – 10/27/13

This week my WWW entry come from Hot Nights in St. Blaise Book #11 – Nabbing Mr. November – Available this week from Turquoise Morning Press!

“I don’t think I’m going to make it till after dinner,” he whispered. “I may need an appetizer to hold me over.”

She gave one of those maddening little hums that drove him wild. He covered her with his body, fitting himself to her in a way that seemed impossible for two people of such disparate height, but utterly imperative to his sanity. Her satisfied mewl vibrated under his skin and shot jolts of arousal straight to his groin.

“I could go for a little nibble too,” she whispered as he trailed kisses up the side of her neck.

Nuzzling the rippling waves of jet-black hair spread across the comforter, he ground against her. “I was thinking more like big bites.”

This week my WWW entry come from Hot Nights in St. Blaise Book #11 – Nabbing Mr. November.

“Shower room.” She peppered his cheek and jaw with hot, frantic kisses. He hesitated for a fraction of a second, and her teeth found the tender skin of his ear lobe. Her fingers tightened in his hair and a strangled groan ripped from his throat. “Don’t think. Don’t fight me,” she whispered. “Just this. Just us.”

“I won’t go easy on you just because I’ve seen you naked,” he whispered, pulling away just enough to allow her the satisfaction of finally managing to undo the zipper.

Using the ball of his foot, he managed to pull the legs down. When he released her to bend down and remove the garment from around his ankles, Jane pushed back and started to recline.

She opened her mouth, but he didn’t let her speak, instead he pressed his lips against hers. He’d thought being this close to her with clothes on was an amazing experience, but without anything between them, it was—wow! That was all he could come up with to describe the sensation of her soft, delicate skin pressed against his. Her tight nipples rubbed against his chest, a feeling that left him clinging to the edge of his self-control.

Today’s post comes for V is for Vindicated – one of my two contributions to Love Letters Volume 6: Cowboy’s Command (October 21st from Carina Press).

His limp was more pronounced than she expected, but she didn’t let her dismay show. The last thing he’d ever accept from her was pity. Each slow, uneven step he took tied her stomach in knots. Lines etched by months of pain and endurance became starkly visible as he approached, each one a startling contrast to his youth and vitality.

It seemed a lifetime passed before the toes of his boots scuffed hers. He stared at his hand as if it had seceded from the union, giving his head a bewildered shake as he raised it. Warmth and affection shot those gunmetal eyes through with silver. “You always were the damnedest girl.”
