Hard Lessons from the Hurt Business by Ed Latimore
Rate this book
Clear rating
Latimore has led an interesting life and is a good writer. An easy read, with some interesting insights into the boxing industry. A bit scattershot in terms of lessons, and I couldn't point to a single one I remember, but the book works as a memoir, ...more

The Men We Need by Brant Hansen
Rate this book
Clear rating
Decent read, but this wouldn't be the first book on Biblical masculinity I would hand someone, nor should it be the only one.

It doesn't cover much of the dominion aspect of manhood and falls a bit too much into the feminine frame. Masculinity has to

Flint by L'Amour, Louis New Edition by Louis L'Amour

My first Louis L'Amour book, and I was hooked after 3 pages. I can see why he was so popular. Pure fun.

There are a bit too many coincidences as everyone and their mother seem tied to Flint's past in some way. But I'll pick up a few more of his books.

Shane by Jack Schaefer

The quintessential story of a wandering stranger who ends up saving the farm. Lots of scenes about how men interact, what makes them dangerous, and what courage looks like. Worth reading to the kids. The prose doesn't flow as well when read out loud, ...more

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

If I had fallen out of love with reading, this book would have made rekindled it into a roaring furnace. I had so much fun reading this book. Mantel's lyrical prose carries the reader along with a deft hand and I will certainly be picking up more of ...more

The Wisdom Books by Robert Alter
Rate this book

The translation is wonderful, especially Job. However, Alter's commentary veers from helpful to tone-deaf. Often, he ignores his own advice as laid out in The Art of Biblical Narrative. ...more

Who Shall Ascend the Mountain of the Lord? by L. Michael Morales

Provides an excellent hook to dive into Leviticus, starting with its place in the greater narrative of the Pentateuch. It beats a dead horse a few too many times, but overall very helpful. A good companion to The Temple and the Church's Mission. ...more

A profound work, nurtured and fed by the uncommon things the author commends to us. I think this book has already changed me. I hope that's true, at least.

A call to appreciat beauty, with a robust definition of beauty, is always appreciated.
