Book Reviews: April 2021

I didn’t do as much reading in April as I would have liked. When the garden calls, reading takes a back seat to weeding and planting and mulching. Still, I managed to squeeze in a few pages.
From the islands of the Pacific Northwest to the swamps of South Carolina, I met immigrants and foster children, the homeless and reckless and those simply treading water. Oh wait, that’s all of us, right?
I ho...

Sunday Letter: 05.02.21
Dear Sunday Letter friends,
As I look back over the past two weeks, I realize I’ve been riding an emotional rollercoaster. Along with life events, even the weather has delivered a series of highs and lows. In a matter of hours we went from near 80 degrees to snowfall (!). A few days later, tornado warnings covered our area as storms passed through. I’m sure the flora and fauna are weary too.
Isn’t this all part of gardening though?
All part of life?
Highs and lows make me more appreciative of ...

Sunday Letter: 04.18.2021
Dear Sunday Letter readers,
This is the time of year I fall behind in my writing and reading because I spend the bulk of my waking hours working in the garden. Nurseries lure me in with fuchsia blooms and bright green foliage. Warm weather entices me, tries to make me believe things that aren’t true.
I know better.
I’ve held off on planting seeds and buying most flowers because a late cold snap always arrives just when our corner of the world is stretching awake. There are plenty of other thing...

Sunday Letter: 04.11.2021
Dear Sunday Letter friends,
Every spring day brings a bit more magic. In our neighborhood, those who came decades before us had the foresight to plant redbuds and dogwoods in parkways beside the street. Now, anyone who happens by is surely blown away by the blooms. I certainly am. Even though I see them every day, every day they are new to me.
That’s what we gardeners try to do—leave the world better than we found it. Gardener or not, that should be everyone’s goal.
This picture of our street d...

Sunday Letter: 04.04.21
Happy Easter to my Sunday Letter friends!
With Easter comes glorious, much-needed rebirth. After the long year we’ve had, extra hallelujah to that.
Thursday morning arrived with more freezing temperatures. I worried about the tree buds and flower blossoms and tender new growth peeking up from the soil. BUT here in our yard, for the most part, we go with a survival of the fittest mode. Occasionally I have been known to cover plants if there is a rare, unseasonable snowstorm, but usually I let na...

Book Reviews: March 2021
Hello my devoted reader friends! Another month means more books to read and review. My book reviews for March 2021 are a mixed bag in every sense. A couple of the best-sellers I couldn’t wait to get my hands on turned out to be disappointments. My absolute favorites were those you’ve probably never heard about. This is why I strongly believe it’s important (and rewarding) to seek out books written by unknown authors.

Sunday Letter: 03.28.2021

Dear Sunday Letter friends,
How on earth is it already the end of March? Time seems to be playing a trick on me. Last week was a hazy, busy blur, in part because we were dog-sitting Gracie’s half-brother, Lucky, while his people were away on spring break. Lucky is no trouble whatsoever. Gracie is the energizer bunny in the group.
It was #TeamSchnauzer, all week. Fun and entertaining, a spring break camp for pups.
For real, who thinks Gracie is part rabbit?

Sunday Letter: 03.14.2021
Dear Sunday Letter friends,
Last week marked the one-year anniversary of when life shifted, thanks (no thanks) to Covid. For about two months, I marked the days on my chalkboard. When I realized normal would look different for a while, I stopped counting and starting adjusting. Sometimes, oftentimes, attitude adds much to circumstance, good or bad.
Looking back, I realize so much has changed . I wonder which changes are permanent? I wonder what I’ve learned, what I no longer need, what positive...

Sunday Letter: 03.07.2021

Dear Sunday Letter friends,
Another week has come and gone. Just like Steve Miller said, time keeps on slippin’ slippin’ slippin’ into the future. Crazy fast in my opinion.
Only 13 days until spring. I’m counting down, that’s for sure.
Knock knock… lettuce in, spring.
I heard about The Free Seed Project and thought it was a fabulous endeavor worth sharing. Maybe you’ll pass this information along too.
The Free Seed Project, started in 2018 as a partnership between Rob Greenf...

Oooh, I’m excited to share my book reviews for February with you. And what a varied group they are. I didn’t plan it. Often my books are simply devoured in the order they become available at the Fayetteville Public Library. (I have a long wait list of books at the library. Doesn’t everybody?)
Three of these books were recommended by friends. Yay for recommendations!
From Mexico to Paris, dusty Oklahoma to a lush forest in Pennsylvania, I ...
