Sanctuary Cove

Last night we went out for dinner at Sanctuary Cove, a plush harbor teeming with exclusive boutiques and fancy restaurants. One of our favourite eateries is George’s Paragon, a Greek reataurant, which has Lamb souvlaki to die for and a selection of creamy desserts.

After dinner, we took a stroll along the pier to watch the boats moored to the harbor, waiting for a trip up the waterways of Brisbane river. A stage and a pop up market set the Chrismassy theme, and we watched as people sang noels under the heat of a Queensland sun.

Christmas in the tropics.

Art work

My daughter Jessica wants to go to art college when she leaves school. She has three years to go before she graduates, but is already creating some lovely art pieces. This is a collage of recent work, from an art book called Querkle, in which she chose the colours, drawings and the best way to display the work. These are on her wall, alongside a cloth fairy and a signed picture of the pop group One Direction, which she wants to take down and store away instead……! Time to put away childhood crushes and find her niche in the world….☺#vangogh #rousseau #klimt #davinci

Tuesday Quote: 12

“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new”

Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

[image error]Albert Einstein in 1921

For my last Tuesday quote slot, I deliberately searched for a quote by the famous mathematician/scientist Albert Einstein. An interesting choice on my part, seeing as math totally threw me at school, likewise science. My daughter, on the other hand, is a math/science whizz, but there is a Mathematics professor on my hubby’s side of the family – that definitely explains it !

But I digress.

This great man changed the way we think about the world around us; space, time and gravity, in his Theory of Relativity. And he wrote some awesome quotes!

I believe that the one I chose resonates with all; mathematicians. scientists, writers, musicians, – anyone who has had to struggle to achieve their desires. The ups and downs of life, where the downs make the ups so much sweeter.

Its all about the journey and not the destination.

Did you know?

he was born in Ulm, Germany to Jewish parents but after a visit to the US in 1933, and with Adolf Hitler’s rising power, he never returned to Germany
he developed the Theory of Relativity, which is one of the two pillars of Modern Physics
he is best known for his mass-energy equivalence formula: E = mc2, also regarded as “the world’s most famous quote”
he received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921
he was famous for his pacifist views, and his staunch support of the civil rights movement
an average person has an IQ of between 90 and 110; more than 130 is regarded as ‘gifted;’ Einstein’s IQ was 160
the word ‘Einstein’ is synonymous with ‘genius’

Welsh Crime Books on Amazon

capture-no-46-on-amazon

My new crime book is cruising along at No 46 in the Amazon charts, under ‘Best Sellers in Welsh Crime.’ Stella Windermere The case of the Polish sailor, tells of an older lady, an amateur sleuth who solves crime in her local town. The character is based on a family member (now deceased) and is set in my old town in Wales.

Self Publishing vs Traditional Publishing

I’m pleased that its there, but I’m slowly realising how difficult it is to market a book yourself. My first two did well; a trilogy of historical novels that’s still WIP. After sharing it on Facebook, my blog, and Instagram, I ran out of promotion tools. The novelty of my books has also waned a bit with people I know, so I’m getting a bit frustrated by self publishing.

Because I’ve been swayed by the potency of having your own work published (and seeing it there in print), I have neglected to go the other route, and send manuscripts to traditional publishers. My dream of having several publishing houses vying for my work has become an illusion, a fantasy and a cause for self doubt and self critiquing.

Has anyone else had these same doubts? Do I carry on self publishing or send to traditional publishers?

Please share your thoughts!

Advantages and Disadvantages of Self-Publishing — Plaisted Publishing

Originally posted on Ruth Nestvold – Indie Adventures: I am finally (finally!) compiling my “Starting Out as an Indie Author” series into a book, and since I started this weekend, I’ve noticed a couple of things I still need to add. Since the first part of the book revolves around the question, “Is Self-Publishing For…

Tuesday Quote: 11

“You can’t hold onto something that doesn’t want to stay”

-Adele

adele_2016Adele

This week’s quote comes from the fabulous Adele. One of my favourite female singers, she epitomises glamour, lyrical talent and unique vocal range, whilst keeping a very down to earth attitude to the music industry.

Did you know?

she was born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins in 1988, to an English mother and a Welsh father
she numbers her most influential singers from a young age as being the Spice Girls, Annie Lennox, Dusty Springfield and Gabrielle
her album 21 brought her 6 Grammys, and a certified Diamond in the US
21 is the longest running No 1 album by a female solo artist in the history of the US and UK charts
she won an Academy Award for the James Bond themed song, ‘Skyfall’
her voice is a contralto; contralto being a classical female voice, and is a fairly rare vocal range
her hit single ‘Hello’ released in October 2015, was viewed a record 27.7 million times on Youtube, easily beating the previous record set by Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’ (20 million views)
