Rationality / performance piece by Andrea Kleine in NYC

Hello all!  I will have a bit part in Andrea Kleine's new performance piece Rationality. If you are in NYC, you should totally go!

RATIONALITY

a new performance work by Andrea Kleine

FEBRUARY 5-6, 2011 at 8PM

Andrea Kleine presents her latest project, RATIONALITY, a performance work that re-creates an episode of a live, call-in, cable-access philosophy TV show that aired in Arlington, Virginia in 1992. The particular episode on the topic of "rationality" featured four philosophical symposers descending into crisis when one symposer argues that rationality is irrelevant – rationality cannot rationalize irrationality.

The performers attempt an exact remake of the episode, including a verbatim transcript, live callers, and technical glitches — all performed in Andrea Kleine's tiny Manhattan apartment — creating an intimate, voyeuristic experience replicating the proximity, scale, and environment of watching television.

Andrea Kleine has presented her interdisciplinary performance works at PS 122, The Kitchen, and The Walker Arts Center, among many other venues in the U.S. and abroad. She has received numerous commissions, grants, and awards including five MacDowell Colony fellowships, the New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship award, and a 2010 NYSCA independent artist commission. Her current project is a series of performance pieces about replication and re-enactment.

Pardon My Youth YA book club

Today, in the Wall Street Journal, there was an article about YA book clubs in NYC. For those of you looking to join a YA book club in Los Angeles, for almost two years I've been running one at Skylight Books (1818 N Vermont) called Pardon My Youth on the third Sunday of every month at 2pm. We meet in the bookstore, amongst the books and discuss all kinds of YA. Sometimes we are mixed ages, as in we have teens who join us in the discussion. It's always pretty wonderful. (Look, the LA Times even wrote about this and us last March!)

This January 16th at 2 PM we're discussing The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. Come join us!

you can always find out what book we're reading at our blog Pardon My Youth or you can join our facebook group.

wrapping at skylight for charity

Hello and Happy Holidays my fine friends.

This year, as I do most years when in Los Angeles for the Holidays, I will be wrapping at Skylight Books.  The wrappers at skylight always wrap for a charity and I will once again be wrapping for the Jenesse Center, which is a Domestic Violence Intervention Program.  This cause is very important to me.  Last year I raised over $200 for them.

Won't you come buy books for gifts, support your local indie bookstore and help out victims of abuse to become survivors of abuse?

Here is my skylight wrapping schedule:

Monday, December 20 11- 2PM

Tuesday, December 21  11- 2PM

Wednesday, Deceber 22  5-8PM

Where'd you get that idea?

So many times when I go speak to writers at conferences and workshops or when I do school visits, people ask me, "Where do you get your ideas?" I have a million places where I get my ideas. But the idea for my first novel Boy Proof came from working a totally odd job. I was working for my friend Phil's Production Transcripts company doing as a Time Coder.

At first, I thought it was a miserable job. But in the end, even the dreary can be inspiring.

Before I was writing full-time, as I try to manage to do now, I made sure to clear as many weeks as possible to write. I always tried to make it a point to live by my motto: "All Art All the Time." This meant I took a lot of temp jobs — something that I could do for a set period of time, pay my rent, buy some groceries and then take a few weeks off to write some more.

You can read the rest of it over at aol as part of their funny series My Spectacular Odd Job.

name that alien! raffle for KGB Fantastic Fiction Series

Hello!

I am participating in a raffle to support the KGB Fantastic Fiction reading series!  For a mere $1 you can bid on a "tuckerization" in my new novel.  Well, kind of!  Instead of putting in your name as a character, I am offering the chance to name a species of alien and one alien trait in my new YA novel.

I suppose you could say that is a spoiler that my next YA is a Sci Fi novel!  Hurrah!

Get a load of some of the other things you can get, too! Things like:  Neil Gaiman's used key board! Three signed George RR Martin books! Your very own wormhole named after you!  Art from China Mievelle!  All for the low raffle ticket price of $1

Support cool Fantastic Fiction live readings!

Raffle ends October 25th (which is also, my birthday!)

I would love to get a wormhole, FYI.
