Jome Pays Taxes
YOU: “Why haven’t you sent any emails for the last couple of weeks?”
ME: “It’s tax season, I’ve been extra busy.”
YOU: “So no time for writing?”
ME: “No, not so much.”
YOU: “Taxes are lame…”
ME: “Yes.”
JOME: “What are taxes?”
ME: “Who let you in here— Wait, that gives me an idea…”

JOME PAYS TAXES
Miss Julie’s decision to place The History of the Internal Revenue Service in the “book of the month” display box at the library was prompted after she herself became engrossed in the subject of income taxes. She had started double-checking the work of her accountant, even though she knew doing so was walking along the edge of an “intellectual slippery slope.” Being sucked into a months-long affair with some new area of study was a real danger, one that all serious librarians faced.
But then Miss Julie had a wild side.
“Oops…” she said, when she found herself in the accounting aisle, despite a cart full of romance novels to reshelve, “Well, one little peak won’t hurt…”
—
Two months later she was hefting the IRS book into the display box, having read it twice and found it to be entirely engrossing.
Unfortunately Jome had a habit of stealing anything that was put into any kind of locked display, and it was only a few days before the IRS book was mysteriously gone and he was mysteriously causing less of a scene near the library cubbies.
This is how Jome found himself paging through a book that seemed to detail some kind of system designed to take money from people.
This system interested him a great deal...

Jome fans can probably imagine how this plays out. I will say it was a lot of fun to write (and a nice break from doing year-end tax related duties).

CHAPTER 8 - GERMANY (PART 2)
Our European travels may have begun in France, but they quickly moved on into Germany. Not Germany proper (with all of its organized thriftiness) but instead the dark & wooded corner (where organization gives way to shadows and thriftiness to cuckoo clocks).
The Black Forest was amazing.
You can imagine that before guns and artificial lights it would have been an imposing, if not terrifying, place to be. Full of wolves and bears and witches in Candy Houses designed to trap and eat children. (After you’ve been in Germany for a while you realize that Disneyland is just a cleaned up version of the Black Forest. If you don’t believe me, go back and watch Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Bambi. Things only shift to more of a “1950’s US National Forests” feel later when Mickey starts going camping and those two little chipmunks start stealing food from Donald Duck.)
Anyway, despite the regional variations you find in the countries you visit, there are usually a few key things that help tie them all together. This was also true of Germany, in a few different ways, but I’ll limit myself to just three:
Three Things that all Rental Homes in Germany have in Common...

Photo is from our time in the Black Forest, I'm pretty sure that's Emma in the upper left hand corner.
