BOOK REVIEW: "The Rabbit Listened" by Cori Doerrfeld

The Rabbit Listened The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

THE RABBIT LISTENED by Cori Doerrfeld is a sweet and direct tale that, honestly, is so much more than just a picture book. This book deals with the topic of grief in such a way that is innocent and yet incredibly wise. Taylor is a little boy with big dreams who creates something dear to him. Literally out of nowhere, a horrible accident causes that something to be destroyed, leaving Taylor feeling broken, and what’s worse, alone.

This is where the story becomes so poignant. Through various animal characters we are exposed to the many ways we humans cope with tragedy: we talk it out, or get angry, laugh it off, ignore it, and so on. Then we meet Rabbit, the one character that never speaks, but listens. Rabbit is a source of comfort to Taylor and by being there for him, shows that everyone heals differently. What works for one person will not help another cope. We need to be willing to asses a situation and provide not what we think will work, but what is needed. We need to be able to listen.

Children (and their grown-ups) will find meaning in this book and I can’t recommend it enough. This book gets five stars, easy.
