Monday Movie Madness: At The Oscars Part 2

Hello Posse!

This blog is going to be short and sweet. I'm on a roll writing part 5 of my Into the West Saga Serial, Into the West: Last Showdown and I do not want to lose my momentum. I am already up to about 35,000 words and 13.5 chapters in with about another 5.5 to go. I hope to have the first draft finished in the next week or so. It's been pouring out of me ever since I finally got the story to click in my head. It sure took it's dang time!

Another reason I want to keep this short today is I read in a writers group on Facebook that another indie author had found his books for sale on Walmart.com but he had not put them up for sale there, so I checked my own books. I found two of my books are listed on the site but they didn't even bother listing me as the author. They listed my editors as the authors even though my name is huge on the cover image. I am working with Walmart to get this taken care of as soon as possible.

I only sell my books from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. If you see them available anywhere else, please do not buy them there, they are being pirated. I would also appreciate it if you let me know if you see them somewhere else. I swear, book pirates make more from my books than I do. It's infuriating.

But for now, on to today's movie, Unforgiven!

Unforgiven was released in 1992 and is a western that was written by David Peoples and produced and directed by none other than western legend Clint Eastwood. This movie stars Clint Eastwood who is joined by Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, and Richard Harris. Such an incredible lineup of talent! It was reported Eastwood once said Unforgiven would be his last western because he felt he was running the danger of repeating his own work or imitating someone else's.

Unforgiven had a budget of $14.4 million dollars and grossed over $159 million. It received widespread praise in virtually all areas including directing, acting, editing, and cinematography. It is one of the few westerns to win Best Picture from the Academy Awards but it also won Best Director (Eastwood), Best Supporting Actor (Hackman), and Best Film Editing (Joel Cox). If you are going to make one last western, this is the way to close out that genre in your career. Eastwood was nominated for Best Actor but lost out to Al Piccino for Scent of a Woman. That would be a tough call.

This was the third western to take home a Best Picture Academy Award along with Cimarron (1931), which I covered last week, and Dances with Wolves (1990), which I will cover next week.

The movie follows a former outlaw turned farmer, William Munny (Eastwood), who agrees to take on one more job to avenge an attack on Delilah Fitzgerald (Anna Thomson). Delilah is a prostitute in Big Whiskey, Wyoming. When a pair o cowboys attack and disfigure her, the other prostitutes in her brothel offer a reward for their murder. The local sheriff, Little Bill Dagget (Hackman) is not happy about the bounty they put out and does not allow vigilante justice in his town. The reward brings in gunfighters looking to collect the reward. Munny, the sheriff, and gunfighter English Bob (Harris) face off in this not to be missed western.

Movie Snack Time!

Today's movie snack is inspired by two things. One, popcorn will always be the classic go-to movie snack (and if you disagree I will fight you on this, just teasing). Two, this movie takes place in a town called Big Whiskey, so what better movie snack cold we have than Baker by Nature's, Whiskey Ginger Caramel Corn

(^^^click for recipe)

If this isn't the perfect snack pairing for this movie, I don't know what is. If there was an Academy Award for Best Movie Snack for Unforgiven, this would win, hands down. Yes, I know I am getting a little dramatic here, but I've been writing on part 5, Into the West: Last Showdown pretty much nonstop for about 7 days and I'm starting to get bit loopy. Just go with it.

Now, you know what time it is, posse. Time to grab your snacks and settle in for another great western movie!

Enjoy!

Friday Funnies: Cowboys!

Hello Posse!

I hope you all made it past tax day without too much stress. I always like to do mine as early as possible to get the tears long over with by now. Now that the dreaded day has passed, let's turn our focus to something more pleasant, like my books!

I have been working hard on part 5, Into the West: Last Showdown and I have to say I am pretty proud of how it is going now that I am on a roll again. Keep watching for the next sneak peek coming in a Friday blog soon.

Now I think we could all use a bit of humor to start the weekend off right. Since my focus is always on historical fiction and westerns I thought a few good-natured jokes about cowboys would be good.

So settled in and I hope these jokes will bring a smile to your face and a little lightness to your heart.

Enjoy!

Whatever Wednesday: Grilled Cheese!

(Photo: Spend with Pennies, The Best Grilled Cheese Sandwich )

Hello Posse!

I have to say, I was so excited to share a Puppy Chow recipe in Monday's blog that I totally forgot that it was National Grilled Cheese Day! There is no way I can just let such a celebration worthy National Day pass without sharing a few recipes with you.

To begin we have to go to Spend with Pennies, The Best Grilled Cheese Sandwich (

But why just stop as the classic grilled cheese sandwich when there are so many amazing variations to try? One of the most interesting versions I have found and plan to try here this week is from Delish, Grilled Cheese Bombs (

These tasty treats use a premade dough so it cuts your prep time quite a bit and leaves you all that much more time to enjoy the melty, cheesy goodness.

Now most people have at least heard of the classic grilled cheese tomato soup combo, but what about an all in one soup and sandwich bake?

For this recipe we go back to Delish for their incredible Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Bake. (

Now what about a grilled cheese sandwich for dessert? It might sound crazy, but when you see the recipe from Driscolls, for their Chocolate Raspberry Dessert Grilled Cheese (

.

This chocolate, raspberry, mascarpone delight will have to dreaming of National Grilled Cheese day and wishing it was everyday. Once you try it, you will wonder why you never tried sweet grilled cheese creations before.

I hope you find at least one recipe here that peaks your interest. And of course you all know that nothing goes better on lazy day than a good snack and a great book. If you need a suggestion for a great read, check out the Into the West Saga Serial books. (

So long for now, posse.

Enjoy,

Dianne

Monday Movie Madness: Oscar Winners - Cimarron!

(© Variety. Click their photo to read their, 2021 Oscars Predictions: All Awards Categories)

Hello Posse!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. I spent a good deal of time writing on part 5 Into the West: Last Showdown (I won't lie, there were a few Fortnite breaks in there). I even gave the first chapter to my writing group and got some feedback to make it even better for you when it's ready to be published.

I have been looking forward to April for a good reason, it's Oscar month and it gives me a reason to focus on westerns that won best picture. This year the Oscars will air on Monday, 26 April 2021. If you are not sure what movies are in the running this year, just click on the picture at the top of this blog to go to Variety and their 2021 Oscars Predictions: All Awards Categories.

We have three Mondays blogs between now and the Oscars so I plan to focus on the three westerns that have taken home the coveted Best Picture award: 1931 Cimarron, 1990 Dances With Wolves, and 1992 Unforgiven have all taken home the Oscar for Best Picture.

Today's movie is the first western to take home the Best Picture Oscar, Cimarron. This epic western stars Richard Dix and Irene Dunne, with Estelle Taylor and Roscoe Ates. It was directed by Wesley Ruggles. The movie was based on the 1930 novel of the same name written by Edna Ferber. This movie would be the most expensive made by RKO at that time. The film's Oscar win was one of only two RKO would win.

This movie spans forty years in the live of a young married couple, Yancey Cravat (Dix) and his young bride, Sabra (Dunne). They join the throngs of people in the Oklahoma land rush. The film follows their trials and tribulations as they deal with how their lives change with the progress being made in the world around them.

While Cimarron was well received by critics, it did not do as well at the box office, coming up short of its production costs in its 1931 release. With all these great movies starting out as western novels, you might want to get the jump on your friends and start reading the Into the West Saga Serials. (

Movie Snack

Today's snack suggestion is a midwest favorite. I know when I was in my twenties, you could almost bet that every party you went to would have a bowl of puppy chow. It was something that was easy to make and people ate it almost as fast as a hungry puppy with fresh kibble.

I found this great recipe on Allrecipes, Puppy Chow (

If you have never tried this, I highly suggest you give it a go at least once in your life, but be warned. If you do, you will have to make it again . . . and again . . . and again . . .

Now, you know what time it is, posse. Time to get your snacks and settle in for another great movie!

Enjoy!

Stephen

Friday Funnies: Taxes!

Hello Posse!

It's that time of year again, when every adult needs to see if they will be getting money back from the US Government or will have to pay more. I was really thankful to see that first stimulus check this last year, it just covered my tax bill. I found it rather ironic the government sent me a check and then wanted almost the same amount back in taxes, which was where they were getting all that money to pay the stimulus checks in the first place. It's enough to drive you batty if you think about it too hard.

Given that this time of year is so stressful for most, I thought I would try to find something funny to share with you about death and taxes. There are actually a lot of great humorous quotes from famous people about these topics.

"Alexander Hamilton started the U.S. Treasury with nothing and that was the closest our country has ever been to being even."

Will Rogers

“He said that there was death and taxes, and taxes was worse, because at least death didn’t happen to you every year.”

Terry Pratchett, Reaper Man

“The difference between death and taxes is death doesn’t get worse every time Congress meets.”

Will Rogers

"The only difference between a tax man and a taxidermist is that the taxidermist leaves the skin."

— Mark Twain

“The wages of sin are death, but by the time taxes are taken out, it's just sort of a tired feeling.”

Paula Poundstone

“He's spending a year dead for tax reasons.”

Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

"It is a good thing that we do not get as much government as we pay for."

― Will Rogers

“Death, taxes and childbirth! There's never any convenient time for any of them.”

Margaret Mitchell, Gone with the Wind

“The only certainties in life are death and taxes.”

— Mark Twain

Besides these quotes, many jokes have been made over the years about these death, taxes and government. But before we get to the jokes, let me just remind you that the Into the West Saga Serial books are available on Amazon.com and B&N.com You can search by title or by Stephen Burckhardt. When you need to get your mind off of taxes, they just might help.

Now, on to the jokes!

Have a great weekend, posse!

Whatever Wednesday: National Days!

(^^^Click the photo to check out calendars available on NationalDayCalendar.com)

Hello Posse,

I hope you are having a great day. Today was actually the third day in a row that we had snow here in Germany. It has been crazy cold and frankly, just plain wrong to have snow in April! This is not normal. Just last week we had almost 80° days and now snow. At least it gives me a reason to drink hot chocolate. Gotta find a bright side!

If you follow my social media at all, you know I love National Days. There is something to celebrate just about every day of the year if you follow National Days. I personally love that my birthday always falls on Talk Like a Pirate Day every year. Today happens to celebrate two things I can definitely support, No Housework Day and Beer Day! Is it a coincidence that both of these fall on the same day? I think not!

Now, while it is a day to skip the housework, I do not include baking in the housework category and I am dying to try a new recipe that uses Guinness. This one comes from Homemade Hooplah's, Bailey's Dark Chocolate Guinness Bread. (

This looks like something my husband and I would love for a Sunday dessert with a good cup of coffee! With the Bailey's icing it just sounds so tasty. I already have Guinness on the next grocery list (I always have Bailey's in the house for recipes and the occasional spiked coffee on the weekends) just so I can make this bread.

So what are you doing with your Wednesday, posse? Do you have any plans for the weekend now that things are starting to open up in the US? I think it will be a while for that to happen here in Germany. I'm fine with that. As cold as it is right now, I wouldn't go out anyway. Besides it just gives me more time to work on writing Into the West: Last Showdown. It's going so well right now. I can't wait for you all to read it!!!

Enjoy your National Day!

Dianne

Monday Movie Madness: The Virginian

Hello Posse,

I hope you all had a wonderful, peace-filled Easter Sunday, if you celebrate Easter, of course. We had a lovely quiet day at home. We had a fairly warm day to enjoy a simple Easter brunch and then pulled out all the stops for a nice family Easter dinner here at home. Today, however, we woke up to snow . . . yes, that white frozen stuff you see in winter . . . it's just not right!

I have not been in the mood to do much of anything today except drink hot tea and wrap up in a blanket, but I did find my motivation to get my blog done. I#m going to try to keep this short and sweet so I can see about getting another chapter finished on part 5, Into the West: Last Showdown. I am to have the first writing done this month. (Fingers crossed!)

Today's movie has had many incarnations from big screen features with A-list stars to a television series. Today, I have chosen to focus on the 1929 version starring Gary Cooper, Walter Huston, Richard Arlen, and Mary Brian, because I love Gary Cooper's work. One interesting note, Randolph Scott makes an appearance in this flick as well in an uncredited role, as Rider.

The Virginian was directed by Victor Fleming and was based on a 1902 novel by Owen Wister of the same name. The Story follows a man who is only known an "The Virginian" (Cooper). He is considered a good-natured cowboy and even befriends a drifter named, Steve (Arlen). A local cattle rustler, Trampas (Huston), faces off with The Virginian, but the men both walk away from the confrontation.

Later The Virginian and Steve both end up falling for the new schoolmarm in town, Mary (Brian). The Virginian loses out in the love department to his friend, but he still looks after Steve and even gives him a job at the Box H Ranch. The Virginian finds himself personally conflicted when he learns Steve has fallen in with Trampas and the cattle rustlers. He warns Steve to get away from the gang, but he doesn't listen. When the gang (without Trampas) steal cattle from the Box H Ranch, The Virginian is forced to kill the rustlers, including his own friend.

The Virginian ants revenge on Trampus for setting up his friend. Will The Virginian have his revenge? Will he get the girl? Check out the YouTube link below for the full movie.

Movie Snack

Today's movie snack it a bit more adventurous than my usual but when I found this, I could not pass it up. Since some of Virginia and West Virginia share part of the Appalachian Mountains, I thought a snack from that region might fit real nice with today's movie. So I give you, Fried Dandelions (Appalachian Style) from All Recipes by Micha Funk. (

I do not know about you, but I am truly interested in trying this recipe. People tend to just think of Dandelions as weeds but they are wrong. Did you know that every single part of the dandelion is edible? They are actually a good source for vitamins A, C, and K and also provide some E and B vitamins including folate. Dandelions are also a good source for several minerals including magnesium, iron, calcium, and potassium. Serve these up with some fried Dandelions up with some Sriracha mayo and I bet it will be a very tasty treat.

So now it's that time again, posse. Time to get your nacks and settle in for another great western movie!

Enjoy,

Friday Funnies: Easter Bunnies!

Hello, Posse!

I hope all is going well for each and every one of you this week and you are all having a wonderful Good Friday. We plan to have a nice fish dinner tonight and spend time together as a family. I am really looking forward to the Easter holiday this Sunday, now that I have everything ready to go for the holiday that is. I don't know what it is about Easter that I love most.

Maybe it's my childhood memories, maybe it's the knowledge that Spring is finally coming, or maybe it's memories of holiday mass with friends and family. No matter what the reason, I just love this holiday even though we are living far from friends and family this year and our celebration is just P.R. and I here with Shaggy. We will make this holiday joyous, even if it's small.

I thought with Easter coming up, now would be a great time for some bunny jokes. I hope you like them. Some really made me chuckle as I was typing them out. There is no sneak peek today for part 5 Into the West: Last Showdown, but I hope to have another one very soon for you. Whatever Wednesday: Easter is Coming pt 2

Hello Posse!

I hope you are having a great day. I am actually writing this on Monday evening here and I am so glad this day is just about over!

I screwed up! I went in to make our grocery order as I do every week. I often put it in on Tuesday or sometimes even Wednesday to be delivered Thursday evening. I thought with Easter coming up I should put the order in early and do it today, but I was not early enough. Every delivery time from today until the Tuesday after Easter was booked.

Now we have plenty of food in the house. I bought some quick emergency rations last year and my husband even bought a few MREs so we would have food, but not what I wanted to make for Easter kind of food and we would have run out of eggs. I do have a stash of dehydrated eggs in our emergency rations, and they are surprisingly good scrambled and great for baking, but it's kind of hard to boil those and color them for Easter.

I felt so bad for not paying more attention to this. We have lived here in Germany for about six years now so you would think that by now I would remember that this is a Catholic nation and they actually close everything for high holy days, but nope, I still don't remember. So I quickly ran out to the store today and bought the things we would need to get us through until next week.

I had been getting things delivered for so long I had forgotten what a chore it is to carry all the groceries home half a mile. I am hoping this experience today will help me to remember to put my orders in on time for holidays from now on (and I'm making reminders in my iCal).

So . . . I thought in the spirit of forgetfulness, I would do another last minute treats and DIY crafts for Easter, just in case anyone else got caught unprepared for this holiday. There are so many good suggestions here you might want to make them even if you are already set for this holiday. You can never have too much Easter fun!

Easter Treats

My sister, Stephanie, sent me this idea for the Easter tips.

Here Comes Peter Cottontail,

Hopping Down the Bunny Trail . . . Mix!

You can see all of ingredients in the photo:

Golden Grahams

Peanut Butter Crunch (or reg. if allergies)

Annie's Bunny Snack Mix

Bunny Marshmallows

Easter Color M&Ms

Raisins in individual boxes

Mix the cereals, M&Ms, and crackers and put it all in the plastic eggs. Raisins stay in their little boxes and the marshmallows go in a little baggie. The kids can choose to mix them all up or eat them separately.

Forkly.com has some great ideas in their

,Fun and Cool Easter Snack Ideas For Kids

(^^^click to go) You can see my favorite idea on their site to the right. Easter Chocolate Covered Strawberries. They are great by themselves or let them grow out of a pudding cup with oreo dirt. It's quick, it's easy, and it's just too cute! Check out all of their amazing snack ideas on their website. It was difficult to choose a favorite. They have so many great ideas!

Easter DIY Crafts

In last Wednesday Whatever's blog, I gave you some craft ideas to do with kids but today I'm going to share some great home decor crafts from Bargain Bethany, a YouTuber I follow. She is great and has some wonderful ideas that are quick, look amazing, and will not break your budget. Be sure to like and subscribe to her channel if you like the ideas and want to see more from her.

Bargain Bethany 2019https://youtu.be/s3bgE8b0-bkBargain Bethany 2021https://youtu.be/hdLWz6NEhjs

That is it for today, posse. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday and I wish you and your families a fabulous Easter!

Enjoy and God bless,

Dianne
